The reported birth date in 1900 matches the date of birth on her gravestone,
which is only the year 1858. Her memorial on Find a Grave, however,
originally reported her birth date as 18 July 1859. In February 2015, this
was corrected to 1858 when I sent a comment. The date on the Texas Death
Certificate (see below) is 18 July 1858. Thanks to Sandra Behne for the

"I would assume that Mollie and Steve married in IT since the older children

"Bessie is in the 1920 Census at age 19 in a Los Angeles Home for Feeble
Minded. Her son that was adopted was named Don Wayne Merry. She went on to
marry twice. She married a man that was a lot older than she. I was told by
Thom Merry, Don Merry's son, that she may have attended a school for the blind
in OK. Don Wayne Merry was born in 1920 which was the same year Bessie was in
the Home for the Feeble Minded."

"I found the marriage of Bessie to a man named John Monsinger. I knew I had
see that record of her married to a much older man. They married 12 September
1921. He is listed as widowed and 59 years old. She was just 21. It lists
her name as Bessie Mae Gaddy and her parents as S. T Gaddy and M B Walton.
That is the first verification of their initials. She is listed as a musician
and he is a farmer. Their residence is Sawtelle, Los Angeles, County. I put
the record in my gallery, but it is hard to read. She lists Steve as being
born in VA instead of NC and Mollie as being born in OK."

John was living in a home for disabled veterans in Los Angeles County when he
married Bessie. He was admitted to the home initially in 1916, and had been
released three times for various periods. This record informs us that he was
born in Wayne, Indiana.

No death record has been found for John Monsinger. No divorced record is
found either, so it appears he died about 1927 or earlier. Bessie married
George Warren Hackett in about 1927.

It appears the report of age at marriage year married apply to the current
marriage, not their first marriages.

They were also reproted in the LA City Directory in 1930.

They were divorced some time before the 1940 census. In 1937 and later,
Berssie was reported in the Alhambra, Califronia, City Direcotry as Mrs Bessie

But in 1940 George and Bessie are in separate residences and both reported as
divorced. This matches the 1942 report on George's WWII registration that his
contact was Colleen May Hackett, their daughter. She kept the name Hackett
for the rest of her life. In her death record she is Bessie Mae Hackett.

This California death record matches Bessie, with the correct mother and
father's last name. But this record reports her birth date as 24 April 1901.
This cannot be right, since she was reported with her twin sister Jessie in
the June 1900 census, when they were reported as 0 months old. The reported
birth date is May 1900, which would be correct if they were less than one
month old. If they were born some time in April 1900, then for a 1 June
census date, they should have been reported 1 month old.

Maybe the enumerator was sloppy in his report. 24 April might be the correct
day of birth. But they had to be born in 1900.

Both Elmer and Reiker (Reka) were reported as born in 1896, but in different
months! The entry for Reka first had age 2, then it was changed to age 4.
Her year was likely 1898. Years of birth are often wrong in the 1900 census.
And in fact the year of birth is confirmed as 1898 in her Social Security
records, and the month is also different from the census, in the date 15 Mar
1898.

Her Social Security records report her birth place as Acorn (in Polk County),
Arkansas, but her record in the 1900 census, when she was 2 years old, report
she was born in Indian Territory before they moved to Polk County, Arkansas.
I would seem to me likely that the earlier record would be correct.

It is sometimes the case that family memory adjusts dates and places over the
years, and later reports do not reference earrlier records. In this case Reka
herself must have reported this locatoi as her birth place, and it was the
earliest place she could have remembered. And it is is also possible that the
enumerator could have gotten confused about which child was the first born in
Arkansas.

"I know that Mollie's maiden name was Walton, because I sent for my

parents as Steve Gaddy and Mollie Walton. Reka was born in Acorn, Polk Co

"I would assume that Mollie and Steve married in IT since the older children
were born there. Bessie and Jessie were twins and I think Jessie must have
died in infancy. Bessie was blind and ended up in a home for unwed mother's
in CA. I have had contact with her grandson who was adopted from the home.
He is an Air Force flight surgeon. He seems to think that Steve [Jr] ended up
in CA, but I have found no trace of him after he was mentioned in the 1910
letter written by Duncan."

The 1900 census has the family name as Gaddis. Both Elmer and Reiker (Reka)
were reported as born in 1896, but in different months! The entry for Reka
first had age 2, then it was changed to age 4. Her year was likely 1898. Her
birth date is reported in her Social Security records as 15 March 1898.

Notes for Mary GAGE

North Carolina, Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Rutherford County
Record #01 114
Groom: Shad Green
Bride: Mary Gage
Bond date: 20 Dec 1782
Bond #000133750
Bondsman: Timothy Riggs
Witness: Felix Walker, C

Mary may have died after the birth of Joseph in 1897. Or it may have been
after the birth of Shadrack Jr in 1801. Because of uncertainty due to
confusion and conflicting reports among genealogies and few records to
clarify, the gaps between births of the children suggest these two periods
when Mary might have died and Shadrack could have married his second wife
Martha Jones. I suggest it was in about 1801.

Notes for Alsey Mary GAINES

My original source for Alsey Gaines had an error in making her the wife of John
Mullinax (b 1755). There was a conflict in dates that I could not resolve
till I discovered the source for the Mullinax family information on
Allcensus.com.

The original source had the same date, 1774, as the date of birth for Alsey
and for her first son John Mullinax. I originally thought the date 1774 must
have been the the date of MARRIAGE, for her husband John would be about 19
years old that year, and we could assume she was approximately the same age.

The Allcensus source clarified the problem by indicating that Alsey (spelled
Alse in the second source and Alsie in a third source) was the WIFE of John S
Mullinax JR (b 1775).

Notes for James GAINES

There are other children in this family. I have included some to indicate the
relationships among some of the neighbouring families. Members of several
families married each other in several generations: Mullinax, Gaines, Evatt,
Jones, and others.

Other children not shown here are Matilda (possibly born 1813), Sarah (b
1816), Frances P (b 1818) and Thomas Hallum (b 1823). The birth year of
Marinda Jane may be 1825 instead of 1813, according to a discrepancy in
sources.
