Notes for Martha GARNER

Family Data Collection - Individual Records
Martha Garner
Birth 1681 Westmoreland Co VA
Death 1729 Westmoreland Co VA
Marriage date 1695
-- Family Data Collection, Compiled by Edmund West

Family sources and research indicate she was born about the same time her
husbnd was in or about 1856.

"I have traced my family's origins to Shropshire, England to my ancestor John
Jenkins, 1656-1717, married to Martha Garner, 1656-1752. They settled in
Westmoreland County, Virginia. ... They had two sons, Ezekiel Jenkins,
1695-1750, & William Jenkins, 1704-1747. William Jenkins had one son, William
Jenkins - 1740-1787, had 4 sons, one of which was James Randolph Jenkins,
1760-1824, who was born in Fairfax County, Va., & had 19 children, one of
which was Samuel M. Jenkins, 1789-1872 ... the first of this set of Jenkinses
to be born in Union County, South Carolina."

Another transcription of this marriage record with more information informs us
that Martha's last name wsa Eskridge. This may mean that this was s different
Rust married to a Martha, or it may mean Martha Garner was married to an
Eskridge before marrying Sam Rusk, making two marriages before she married
John Jenkins. But it seems from other records that she married Rust after
John's death.

Notes for Sarah Elizabeth GARNER

Different census reports give different names from which we can put together
Sarah Elizabeth's name. A genealogy, citing Missouri census sources, gives
the name as Sarah E. I found her listed as Elizabeth in the 1860 census.
This indicates her name was Sarah Elizabeth.

John W is unmarried, still living with his parents in 1850, and is married to
Sarah Elizabeth with 2 children in 1860. The oldest child, F Marion, is 4
years old in June 1860, so born in 1855. Thus we can estimate the year of
marriage for John and Sarah as 1854.

this is an older brother of Adolph. Immigration records indicate that Leon
immigrated in 1884, the same year as Adolph, strengthening the indicaiion of
family ties. Leon was naturalized in 1892, 11 years before Adolph (se below).

Garot, Aline Dau F W 13 Arkansas Belgium Belgium [abt 1906]

The birth places of Adolph's children tell us about when they moved to
Arkansas. The 1910 census reports the daughter Arline (Aline in 1920) was
born in Louisiana abt 1906.. But the 1920 census says she was born in
Arkansas. From other family informaiton (see Jean Girerd) it appears the
birthplace in Arkansas would be correct for Aline (Arline?), not Louisiana.
Their son Victor was born in Louisiana abt 1901 or 1902. So we can say Adolph
moved his family to LaGrue, Arkansas County, between late 1901 1906.

Aline is reported out of order if her age is correct. Note that all the
children are reported as having parents who wee both born in Belgium. But
Adolph's wife here was born in Louisiana. If this is correct, it means that
Lagnine is not their mother, but their stepmother. This may also be an
enumerator error. But the 1930 census below clarifies this by reporting the
mother of all the chldlren born in Louisiana, matcher Adolph's wife.

The census above reports that information about Adolph's immigration and
naturalizaton is unknown. I found his naturalization record online at
Ancestry.com. He was naturalized on 2 March 1903. One of the witnesses was
his brother-in-law Jean F Girerd (whose name was recorded in this record as
Jean S Girard). Another witness was one Numa Mouton, with the surname of
Theresa Girerd's husband, Francis E Mouton. In the 1930 census, there are
Moutons living near Adolph.

The 1930 census corrects the birthplace problem, reporteing Marie L[agnine] as
born in Louisiana, and the mother of the three chidlren also born in
Louisiana. This seems to indicate that Marie is indeed the mother of these
children, and the 1920 report of their mother's birth in Belgium was an
enumerator error.
