In 1850, living next door to the Gentry family was a Foster couple, James F and Mary L, who had been married a couple of years. I found their marriage information in the Sevier County genealogical society online library. This couple may be the connection through which Elizabeth met her first husband. 1850 Federal Census, Sevier County, Arkansas, 25 November, Blue Bayou Township, page 438, Hse/Fam #453 James P Foster 25 M Farmer $0 Real Estate b Tennessee (b abt 1825) Mary L Foster 20 F b VA (b abt 1830) Owen H Foster 1 M b Arkansas (b abt 1849) A clue was provided in July 2011 by Alisa K Hardman in a note on my genealogy at Ancestry.com. "There is a record of a marriage in Sevier County, Arkansas of Thomas Foster, age 23, to Elishebeth Gentry, age 21 on 5 Oct 1854." -- Alisa K Hardman, comment on genealogy, 27 July 2011 Elizabeth's age in that marriage record matches closely the age in the 1850 census. Elizabeth's first daughter, Mary Elizabeth Foster, was born near Arkadelphia in Clark County, east of Sevier County, which is on the Oklahoma border. This latter date also presents a problem about the first marriage and birth of Frances, since the marriage record Alisa refers to above dates the marriage of Frances' parents in October 1854, when she was over 1 year old. It may be that the Sevier County record, while in the right area, is still for another similarly-named couple. Elizabeth married Isaac Henry Sorey in about 1856, after the death of her first husband. Isaac Sorey died after the death of their last child Frances in 1873. In the 1860 census, Isaac is enumerated as J H Sorey. It appears from the age of Martha J Sorey that Isaac and Elizabeth married about 1876-77. Note that Elizabeth's husband's initials are clearly written in the census record as J H, but other sources report his name as Isaac Henry. He is reported in 1870 as Isaac H. The anonymous source on Ancestry.com's One World Tree gives Ada's name as Ada Pearlee Geurin. About 10 Geurin genealogies I have found spell her middle name this way. The form of the middle name differs from that known by the Gregory family. The name is recorded at least one place in family records as Ada Pearline Guerin. The Geurin genealogy reports her middle name Pearlee. Her son Richard, in an affidavit related to the birth for his brother Clarence, spelled his mother's name as Ada Parlee Geurin. This source seems credible, since it provides much detail. This maiden name seems to be a variation of the French name Guerin. There are both Geurins and Guerins in Oklahoma. It appears that both spelling occur in some family lines. There are three dates reported for the marriage. Loretta Gregory, niece of Wiley, reports the date as 25 Oct 1921, while the date on the grave is 23 Oct 1921. A third report is 22 Oct 1921, from the Rozell and the Geurin Genealogies on Ancestry.com. The latter also provides the location, Milo, Carter County, Oklahoma, as well as personal information for Ada. I suspect the date of of 22 October is the date of issuance of the license. 1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 9 June, Pickens County, Chagris Township, District 169, page 5B, Hse #82, Fam #88 Geurin, George Head W M Oct 1868 51 Married 19 yrs TN TN TN Preacher Rents Geurin, Martha Wife W F Oct 1862 37 Married 19 yrs 8 children/8 living TX AL TX Geurin, Alice Dau W F Jan 1882 18 TX TN TX Geurin, Carroll Son W M Mar 1885 15 TX TN TX Geurin, Delores Dau W F Jun 1887 12 TX TN TX Geurin, Ruth Dau W F Mar 1890 10 TX TN TX Geurin, Ada Dau W F Nov 1892 7 Ind Terr TN TX Geurin, Stella Dau W F Mar 1895 5 Ind Terr TN TX Geurin, Ella Dau W F Mar 1885 5 Ind Terr TN TX Geurin, Jenette Dau W F Feb 1898 2 Ind Terr TN TX 1920 Federal Census, Garvin County, Oklahoma, 16 February, Whitebead Township, District 32, page 6B, Hse #110, Fam #111 Geurin, George Head Rents Farm M W 69 TN TN TN Farmer Geurin, Martha Wife F W 49 TX TX TX No Occupation Geurin, Carl T Son M W 33 Single TX TN TX Laborer, Home Farm Geurin, Ada Dau F W 26 Single OK TN TX Geurin, Stella Dau F W 24 Single OK TN TX Geurin, Nettie Dau F W 22 Single OK TN TX Note that Ella is not in the home, presumably already married and on her own. The Gregory family knows that Ada moved to Colorado at some time after the death of her husband Wiley Gregory in 1973. Florence is a town in the Canon City metro area. The transcription of the Social Security records found on Family Search (https://familysearch.org/search) reports the place of death as Brewster, which is a section of Fremont. The Social Security Death Index has a different date of birth from that on the gravestone, but this is common. The birth date on the grave is 4 Nov 1892, differing in both day and year. The month and year of death match the date on the grave. --------------------------- ADA PEARLEE GREGORY Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m, Friday, December 4, 1981 at Brown-Boydston Funeral Home Chapel for Ada Pearlee Gregory, 89. A descendant has given some information from family tradition about Charles S Gibson: I have recently learned of a family history that states that Sarah Morgan's husband, Charles S. Gibson was half Cherokee. The family information that has been shared with me was testimony from (his son) John Marion Gibson's youngest daughter, who claimed her g-grandmother Gibson was a full blood Cherokee. She was specific about names, both white and Indian, of parents, siblings, etc. ... We have no information that Charles tried to claim any Indian rights. And unfortunately, the family history does not include any dates or locations. -- Natalie McClendon, Ancestry.com Discussion Group, 20 March 2005
