Notes for Jesse Alexander GOOCH

Sources I have seen report Jesse's name as Jesse A or J A. I found one
genealogy which has the full name Jesse Alexander Gooch.

"Jesse Alexander Gooch," Private Tree, name only
-- Ancestry Trees,
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/RequestTreeAccess.aspx?tid=36253727&pid=18909870121

His obituary reported him born in Baldwyn, Lee County, Mississippi, in 1859,
apparently based on his age as reported in all the censues but one. But Lee
County was not formed until 1866, while Baldwyn was not incorporated until
1861, two years after Jesse's birth. Baldwyn formed on the new rail line, 1.5
miles from the nearest town, Carrollville. He was probably born in
Carollville, or on a farm nearby. All the residents of Carrollville moved to
the new town of Baldwyn.

Baldwyn was across the county line of Tishomingo County and Itawamba County.
These two counties were subdivided into smaller counties in 1866 (Itawamba)
and 1870 (Tishomingo), two of them being Lee (1866) and Prentiss (1870) After
all the subdividing, Baldwyn was left straddling the county lines of the two
new counties of Lee and Prentiss.

------------------------
Located five miles north of Guntown, the main street of Baldwyn runs along the
county line of Lee and Prentiss counties. The city has the unusual distinction
of having been incorporated in four counties. It was incorporated by an Act of
the Legislature in Tishomingo and Itawamba counties on April 1, 1861.
Tishomingo County was divided into Alcorn, Prentiss and Tishomingo in 1870,
while Lee County was formed from parts of Itawamba and Pontotoc counties in
1866.

Baldwyn is an outgrowth of the village of Carrollville: when the Mobile and
Ohio Railroad was being built during the years of 1848 to 1861, it missed
Carrollville by one and one-half miles and the citizens moved to the new town
of Baldwyn.

Jesse's father was named Jackson, but he died in the Civil War. Jesse's
mother used the name of her second husband for all her children, according to
a descendant.

"You will note the birthplace of his father was unknown on all census records.
His father was a Mr. Jackson, who died during the Civil War. The story, as
dictated by Fannie in 1965, was that he was brought by the house as a prisoner
& all food was taken & they left an old blind horse & took his father away and
he was never heard from again. She said Jesse regretted not having his named
legally changed back to Jackson. She gave the names of his brother & sister
and half-siblings & who they married, etc. A few years ago when I became
interested in Genealogy, census records verified the info she had given re his
family members was correct. According to the notes, he left Miss @ 18 after an
altercation of some kind & went to Ft Worth, Tx area and was in Texas for
about 3 yrs. Have not been able to verify this. The obit for his half brother
William M Gooch mentioned a half brother, Jeff Gooch (Jesse's brother) which
further confirms that his mother Jemima had indeed remarried & after the
disappearance of Mr. Jackson, used the name of Gooch for all her children."
-- Nita Muczynski, Ancestry Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 May 2014

Some sources suggest that Jesse and Amanda married about 1875. One genealogy
has the date as 2 November 1876. This seems unlikely to me, though, since he
was born about 1859, according to most of the censuses, or in 1861, according
to one or more genealogies. If born in 1859, in 1875 he would be only 16
years old, which makes it seem unlikely he would marry at that time. Even
less if he was born in 1861 and would be about 14.

The 1930 census reports that Jesse was first married at age 18, which would
make it about 1877 or 1879. But we know that the census age for their first
child, W M Gooch, indicates he was born in 1878 or 1879.

Jesse's birth year of 1859 was confirmed when I found his obituary on USGenWeb
for Grady County, Oklahoma (See below). The date of marriage was reported on
one genealogy, which provided no source information and lacked other details,
but exhibited the character of family information.

Jesse and Amanda divorced around the time of the birth of their last son
Sebourne (Seburn) in July 1898. In the 1900 census, three children are with
Jessee. The oldest son Willey would have been out of the home on his own by

-- Nita Muczynski, Ancestry Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 May 2014

The 1910 census reports that this is the third marriage for Jesse, but I have
found no information on the second marriage. Most genealogies lack any info
about a wife between Amanda and Francis.

Jesse and Francis' granddaughter Venita Muczynski says that there was no wife
between Amanda and Francis, and that Francis was the second wife. So where
did this report of this as the third marriage come from? The only wife I have
found information on is Danie Barnett, whom Jesse married in Mississippi in
abt 1876. I understand Amanda (Danie) to be the first wife.

In 1920, The Gooch family is enumerated as a second family in the household of
a head of household whose surname I cannot read due to multiple overwrites.

In 1940, their daughter Vivian is still living with them, now enumerated under
her married name of Lewis, but she appears with no husband. Her marital
status is unclear, since all the enumerator put there is the number 7. She
has a 5-year-old daughter Veneta (spelled Venita in her own communication to
me). Vivian's husband's WWII enlistment record in 1942 reports he was
divorced, so their separation at the 1940 census probably indicates the
divorce occurred before that census.

Note that Vivian is reported as living in Ardmore Okla in 1935, but her
5-year-old daughter Veneta (Venita) is reported as born in Oklahoma (about
1935), but living in Ft Worth at that time. For marital status there is the
number 7. What the enumerator might have meant, I cannot fathom.

January 1935 and before the 1940 census.

In 1940 Vivian and her daughter Venita (spelled Veneta here) are enumerated in
the household of Vivian's parents. Vivian is not reported divorced, but
there is husband in the household. From other sources we known eldridge later
married again. The box for Vivian's marital status has only the number 7.
From the report of locations in 1935, it appears that Venita was born in Ft
Worth, while we are told her mother was living in Ardmore (Carter County),
Oklahoma.

Most genealogies have this child as W M Gooch. But two have the name as
Wesley M. I have found a Welsey Dean Gooch, in Turnbull, McClain County,
Texas, now buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Lindsay, McClain, Oklahoma. He was
orn in Missouri.

Jared Kirk, a descendant of W M's brother, John reports that his family notes
have W M's name as Willey with no initial.

"Our records have Jesse and Amanda's children as Willey Gooch (probably the W
M Gooch in your tree), Jessie Gooch, John Pearl Gooch, and Sieburn Dosier
Gooch (which you have)."

Note that in 1920, the children were all reported born in Oklahoma. But in
1930, J W, age 17, and his two younger sisters Juanita & Ida May were reported
born in Texas, while the younger children were born in Oklahoma. Owen and
Maggie's marriage record has not been found.

It looks like Owen and Maggie moved to Oklahoma after the birth of Ida May
(Mae) in about 1917. In the 1920 census, Charlie Collins is probably Owen's
cousin. Owen's mother was Phoebe Collins.

Notes for Charles Albert GORMAN

"We lived with my maternal grandparents Mary Sirnorah and Charles Albert
Gorman."
-- Mari Jayne Burke, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 May 2008

Although the 1900 census reports that Charley was born in Louisiana,
subsequent reports seem to indicate that Texas is more likely. The 1910 and
1920 censuses both report he was born in Texas, his father in North Carolina
and his mother in Georgia.
