Sources differ on the birth date for Nancy Graves. The Porter genealogy reports alternate dates of 1834 and 1837. From the 1870 census, it appears that Nancy had two sons, Benjamin Franklin Harman and Edward Harman. These two sons are listed in the household of Edward and Mary Harman in 1870, in Milam County, Texas. The ages would put their births before the death of Nancy in about 1857-8. It appears Nancy died about 1858 while the family was living in Bell County, Texas. See further details in the Notes for Edward Harman (Sr).

Ediwing matches Rolland, his name in all other records. There is a Social Security record reporting a Rolland Earl Gray as born 28 July 1920 in Seattle. The record identifies Rolland's parents as Earl T Gray and Dorothy Souders. However, Earl did not marry his second wife Diorothy Souders until July 1924. So either Rolland would be the son of Earl Thornton Gray and his wife Gwenedolyn Hibbs, or Rolland forgot his birth date and reported it about 5 years earlier than it was. was Rolland born out of wedlock while Earl was still married to Gwen? After Earl and Gwen divorced, some time after the 1922 city directory, Earl married Dorothy. Note that Rolland's Social security record reports his birth date as in 1919. But he is not reported in the 1920 census. So it appears he was actually born in 1920. Gray researcher Cynthia Boeing reports both Edwin and Rolland as the son of Gwen and Earl. Cindy also contributed the following story of her ancestor meeting Earl in 1921. "My ancestor Jimmy Rinehart met Earl Gray on the beach in Seaside Oregon in about 1921. Rinehart was about 13; Gray allowed him to help with a damaged plane and then hired him. He paid him with aircraft parts with which he build his first airplane, and I have a few newspaper articles you may be interested in, describing how he met Earl Gray and the plane he built and article with a photo of Earl Gray and his wife Dorothy Souder who died Labor Day weekend in 1927 [it was 6 Sept 1926] in the plane crash at Haystack Rock. Jimmy participated in the air search for her. An article describing an Air Show Earl flew in and the malfunction that nearly resulted in a crash. Another document listed his employment with 'Earl Gray Aviation Company.'" -- Cynthia Boeing, email on Geneanet messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 24 January 2015 U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1922, p 693 Gray Earl T (Gwendolyn I) musician h 921 av W "He was a muscian and a Seattle Band leader but he had his own band and radio show." -- Cynthia (Cindy) Boeing, email on Geneanet messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 24 January 2015 Cindy Boeing also provided a newspaper story about a near crash prevented by Earl Gray's skillful piloting. ------------------ PLANE PANCAKES INTO OAT FIELD Control Jams at Elevation of 1,000 Feet and Aviator Gray Prevents Disaster only by Clever Maneuvering -- Slight Bruises Only Injury to Two Boy Passengers and Driver -- Plane Damaged The Curtis pursuit plane was a prominent feature of aerial scenery here during the Fourth of July festivities, met with quite a serious mishap Sunday at 1:30 when the control which governs the elevating rudder became jammed when the plan was starting on a flight and had reached an elevation of about 1000 feet. The difficulty was due to so small a matter as the absence of a tiny cotter pin allowing a bolt which held the control rod in place to slip out, the rod falling down and becoming jammed so that the control could not be manipulated. The control rudder was in a position to elevate the plane, which made it impossible to volplane to a landing. In this embarrassing emergency Mr. Gray showed his coolness and skill by an unusual maneuver. He would shut off the power permitting the weight of the engine to pull the nose of the plane downward. After dropping as far as he dared without falling into a tail spin, he would âflatten outâ the plane when it began to point up again (owing to the position of the rudder) he would repeat the former maneuver. By this process he worked the machine down to within about 50 feet of the ground and made a pancake landing in Ben Schlomanâs oat field. Plane Damage-No One Hurt The passengers in the plane at the time were Ralph Fralick and Frank Marsh, neither of who sustained any injury of consequence, sustaining only slight bruises about the face owing to being thrown forward when the plane struck the ground, Mr. Gray had his nose bumped in like manner but seemed none the worse for the experience. The boys thought the aviator was simply cutting a few fancy âdidoesâ and didnât not even become nervous. Mr. Gray said the accident was one which might never occur again in a lifetime of flying but placed him under a handicap which made the avoidance of a serious accident very difficult. The plane is owned by Lou Johnson, who served as mechanic during the flights here. The driver, Earl Gray, is rated as one of the most experienced and expert aviators on the coast. The plane is being repaired at this place and is expected to be ready to take the air again by the end of the week. -- Arlington Times, Arlington Washington, July 10, 1924; courtesy of Cindy Boeing, email on Geneanet messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 25 January 2015 ------------------ A marriage record in Kitsap County, Washington, reports that Earl married Barbara A Boswell in 1926. I have not found the marriage or divorce record for Earl and Gwendolyn. They divorced before December 1924, when she married Cyril Fouts. I have not found Earl in the 1930 census, when he should be reproted with his second wife Dorothy Souders. The 1930 census record for Gwendolyn (Gwendoline) reports a son named Edwin Gray age 9. So this son was born about 1921, fitting into the other facts from the records. But Mabel was not born un til 1914, so this Hazel reported in the 1900 census was not his daughter Hazel, as Jen Garet thought. Lyndas provides clarification of the daughter named Hazel. The 1910 census also informs us that besides Hazel, they have lost two other children, born and died between the censuses. Out of 5 children borne by Jennie, only the two boys Earl and Wesley remain, until Mabel is born in 1914. 1910 Federal Census, Multnomah County, Oregon, 19 April, Portland Ward 8, District 192, Sheet 6A, 744 Belmont St, Hse #124, Fam #133 Gray, James A Head M W 37 Married 16 yrs PA PA PA Concrete Contractor Owns Gray, Jennie F W 35 Married 16 yrs 5 children/2 living OR OR OR Gray, Earl Son M W 14 Single OR PA OR Gray, Wesley Son M W 12 Single OR PA OR James and Jennie and their son Earl have separate listings in the 1914 Portland City Directory, U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 Portland, Oregon, City Directory, 1914, p 643 Gray Earl T clk H D Clark r 894 1/2 E Morrison Gray James A (Jennie) carp h 894 1/2 E Morrison U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995 Riverside County Directory, 1917, p 456 Palm Springs [no addresses on this page, only occupations] Gray James (Jennie) contr Gray Wesley clk 1920 Federal Census, Riverside County, California, 14 January, San Gorgonio Township, District 131, Page 2A, Hse #36, Fam #37 Gray, James A Head Owns Free and Clear M W 48 PA PA PA Retail Grocery Merchant Gray, Jinnie Wife F W 45 Single OR MO OR Gray, Mabel Dau F W 6 Single OR PA OR In 1925 & 1926 they are reported in the Riverside City Directory. "By all indications and spouse showing on death cert he was married 3 times. 2nd marriage was to Mable Lillian Gray in 1945 (see my tree and comments for both Mable and Thelma [Barcley], on death cert. for William)." -- Marion Mixon, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 7 September 2014 With this information I was able to locate a marriage license of Andrew's daughter in 1950. This detailed California marriage license provides the name and birth state of both her parents. This gives us an earlier wife of Andrew before the well-documented Thelma Leona Barclay. Andrew's daughter was Estelle Mae Jackson, obviously named after Andrew's mother, Estella (Stella) Brewer. FamilySearch transcribes the name Estelle Mae reports for her mother as Nahel Lillian Grey, born in Oregon. The name shoudl be Mabel Lillian Gray. There are some faint marks to the left and there is a matching faint area in the line above. That could indicate that the letter should be an M instead of an N as the bold visible lines now appear. The middle letter looks more like a B than an H. I found some records of Mabel before her marriage. In the 1920 census we find her as the sole child of her parents. They are in San Gorgonio Township of Riverside County, where her father has a grocery store. 1920 Federal Census, Riverside County, California, 14 January, San Gorgonio Township, District 131, Page 2A, Hse #36, Fam #37 Gray, James B Head Owns Free and Clear M W 48 PA PA PA Retail Grocery Merchant Gray, Jinnie Wife F W 45 Single OR MO OR Gray, Mabel Dau F W 6 Single OR PA OR The helpful 1930 City Directory for the city of Riverside lists Mrs Jennie Gray and Mabel Gray (her daughter) places Mabel in the vicinity of Andrew Jackson. In the 1940 census, which reported him as 5 years old. GoIng by William Jr's age here, his parents would have divorced sometime from mid-1935. His mother married a Hoskin then also divorced him before this 1940 census. At the time of her death, Mabel's surname was Owen. But it is even more complicated than that. My cousin Beverly Mixon Hill found a marriage license for Mabel and William Jackson in 1945. The following marriage record reports a second marriage when Andrew and Mabel got married again after divorcing. They later divorced again. Andrew married agian in 1949. Mabel married agian, but the year is uncertain. -------------------------- Marriage License William Andrew Jackson Residence 4174 Oakwood Pl, Riverside, California Age at last birthday 35, Born abt 1920 Oklahoma Occupation US Navy, Divorced, 2nd marriage Father Samuel Westfall Jackson b Oklahoma Mother Estelle Brewer, b Oklahoma Bride Mabel Lillian Jackson Residence 3451 9th St, Riverside, California Age at last birthday 31 Born abt 1914 Portland, Oregon Occupation None, Divorced, 2nd marriage Father James Alexander Gray b Oklahoma Mother Jennie Kaufman, b Portland, Oregon Maiden name of Bride if she was previously married Mabel Lillian Jackson Marriage performed Long Beach [Los Angeles County CA], 18 Jan 1945 By Dialva M Rowland, Minister of the Gospel, Long Beach Witness W Naomi Gray, Bellflower, California Filed 22 Jan 1945 Notes: Mabel's last name is Jackson We know her maiden name was Gray, and her father's surname here is Gray Estelle Mae Jackson, in her marriage license, lists both of these as her parents; she was born in 1931. This looks like a second marriage for these same two, a remarriage after a divorce No prior marriage record for either one has been found (as of 18 November 2014) -------------------------- When I analyzed this I noted that both of them had the surname of Jackson, indicating a previous marriage. On the marriage license, each indicated this was their second marriage. This seemed to indicate that the 1945 marriage was a remarriage after a divorce. The 1940 census, which I found later, confirmed this two-time marriage. This census with the 1945 marriage license would mean she divorced William perhaps the second half of 1935. But you will see there is a further complication in this 1940 census. Mabel's last name here is Hoskin. Since she is reported as divorced, this would seem to indicate that she married someone named Hoskin after the 1935 divorce from William Jackson, then also divorced him before this 1940 census. In this case, her remarriage to William Jackson was actually her third marriage, not her second as she reported (but she had had only two husbands, but married to one two times). Andrew and Mabel were listed in the Riverside, California, City Directory for 1945. ------------------------------- Nancy was a sister of my great, great grandmother, Mary Ann (Gray) Cook. Although her parents are still a mystery, we do know that Nancy Grayâs mother was also named Nancy. Nancy Gray married Jacob M. Pentecost in Desha County, Arkansas, on 05 Aug 1852. This date is on file in the County Clerkâs office, Desha County Courthouse, Arkansas City. My great, great grandmother, Mary Ann Gray, married William Andrew John Cook before 1840, and her sister, Nancy, her mother, Nancy, and her brother, Isaac, are listed in the John Cook 1850 household, Richland Twp, Desha County (the Emaline listed is my great grandmother). Isaac is listed in Mary Annâs 1860 household, Jefferson Township, Desha County. W.A.J. Cook, Mary Ann, and Mary Annâs brother, Isaac Gray, all acquired Desha County land patents, involving adjoining acreage, which suggests they were planning on establishing a plantation (these patents can be observed on the BLM-GLO site). W.A.J. died about 1856, Mary Ann died 06 Nov 1862, and Isaac died of disease on 17 Jul 1862 while serving with Company E, 26th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA. My great grandmother, Emma, ended up with all of the land, which totaled around 320 acres. She married my great grandfather, William Floyd Meeks, on 28 Feb 1867 (he also served with Isaac in Company E, 26th AR INF, CSA), and all of that acreage then became known as the Meeks place. -- Robert L.
