Notes for Nancy GRAY

For a long time I found no source to clarify Nancy's name and origins. Then in
Decembere 2014, I received a communication from a descendant of Nancy's
sister.

-------------------------------
Nancy was a sister of my great, great grandmother, Mary Ann (Gray) Cook.
Although her parents are still a mystery, we do know that Nancy Gray’s
mother was also named Nancy. Nancy Gray married Jacob M. Pentecost in Desha
County, Arkansas, on 05 Aug 1852. This date is on file in the County Clerk’s
office, Desha County Courthouse, Arkansas City.

My great, great grandmother, Mary Ann Gray, married William Andrew John Cook
before 1840, and her sister, Nancy, her mother, Nancy, and her brother, Isaac,
are listed in the John Cook 1850 household, Richland Twp, Desha County (the
Emaline listed is my great grandmother). Isaac is listed in Mary Ann’s 1860
household, Jefferson Township, Desha County.

W.A.J. Cook, Mary Ann, and Mary Ann’s brother, Isaac Gray, all acquired
Desha County land patents, involving adjoining acreage, which suggests they
were planning on establishing a plantation (these patents can be observed on
the BLM-GLO site). W.A.J. died about 1856, Mary Ann died 06 Nov 1862, and
Isaac died of disease on 17 Jul 1862 while serving with Company E, 26th
Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA. My great grandmother, Emma, ended up with all
of the land, which totaled around 320 acres. She married my great grandfather,
William Floyd Meeks, on 28 Feb 1867 (he also served with Isaac in Company E,
26th AR INF, CSA), and all of that acreage then became known as the Meeks
place.

Notes for Rolland Earl GRAY

Note that Gwen's son Edwin is reported as only 9 years old, thus born about
1921. This age matches a birth in about 1920. This is likely when Rolland
Earl Gray was born to Earl and Gwen. The records for this famliy are all
vairously erroneous. For instance, the SS record for Rolland Earl Gray report
he was born in 1919, but there was no child reported for Earl and Gwen in the
January 1920 census, so his birth must have been in July 1920.

But that SS record also reports his mother as Earl's second wife Dorothy
Sounders, whom he did not marry until 1924. She would, however, be the only
mother Roilland might remmebr or have heard much about, since she was his step
mother from 1924 to her death in 1926.

Note that the year of Rolland's birth is reported here as 1919, but he was not
reported in the 1920 census, when his mother wa only 17, so it appears he or
SS got the year wrong. Also, in the 1930 census, only one child was reported
for Gwen, named Edwin, so maybe this name was an error listing for Rolland
Earl. Maybe the enumerator wrote Edwin by error instead of Rolland. More
incredible errors have occurred in censuses!

A burial record is found for a Carl Edwin Gray, but birth dates as well as the
death date is again different, so that appears to be a different person. The
place of death is not reported in this record, but burial was in a military
cemetery in Riverside County, in southern California.

The grave for Carl Edwin Gray reports his birth date as August 1917. There is
no photo posted on the memorial for verification, so it is unclear if this
date is from his grave or was provided by the manager of the FAG memorial
Seeing the original creator of the memorial, it appears that birth date comes
from his military records. His reported birth date in 1917 on his grave
matchces the period when Gwen was married to Earl Thornton Gray. But no child
is reported for Earl and Gwen in the 1920 census, bring the 1917 birth date
into question.

The report of Edwin in 1930 may be an eroneous enumeration for her son Rolland
Earl Gray, as named on his Social security record. But the date of death and
birth are also different form the dates for Carl Edwin Gray. His SS record
indicates he died in Las Vegas and his SS card was issued in Kansas.

Wesley M Gray
Spouse Eloise F Batey
Marriage 9 Feb 1920 Clark County

At some point before 1930, Wesley and Eloise divorced or Eloise died. I have
not found any additional record for them, but find Wesley married to an Agnes
Dow, living in Los Angeles. Her Scottish immigrant parents are in the
household, and their family is sharing the dwelling with a couple named
Potter. There are two children in this household, aged 11 and 8.

The oldest daughter Ellen could not be Agnes' daughter, since Wesley married
his previous wife Eloise Batey only in 1920 and did not marry Agnes till 1926.
Ellen is even too old to be Wesley's daughter by Eloise, since she was born in
about 1917 The 1930 census reports that he was first married at age 21, so
about 1917. So Wesley married his first wife in about 1917. I have not found
a marriage record for that marriage.

In the 1920 census, Wesley is reported as married, matching his record of
marriage to Eloise in February 1920. But his wife is not in the home, nor any
children. It may be that Ellen was in her maternal grandparents' home, if her
mother died, or if she and Wesley divorced. But then Ellen and her younger
sister Margaret are in Wesley's household in 1930. The younger daughter
Margaret was Eloise's daughter. Wesley married his next wife Agnes on 30 Dec
1926, when Margaret would have been about 2 years old.

Wesley was a pilot, working in 1929 for Tanner Air Service.

Some genealogies report that Myra married Charles Lee's cousin after he died.
They give the name as William Wade Cowart. But I found that in the Atlanta
City Directory he is listed as C Wade Cowart. They wre living in the city of

In the 1860 census, by age Emeline here matches Jane E in 1850. But there is
a Jane here. The age of Jane here is closer to Harriet's in 1850. In terms
of age sequence, Jane in 1960 matches Harriet, while Emeline matches Jane and
the name Emeline matches the middle initial of Jane in 1850. Interesting.

Note also that the age of Kesiah in 1860 makes for a 4-year difference from
the age reported in 1850.

Their two sons John and James are living nearby with their families,
enumerated on the next page.

Jane here matches the Jane of 1860. Since there was only one child in the
household in 1868, it appears that Harriett is the same child as Jane. This
leaves the anomaly of the middle initial of E in 1850.

The following may represent our Alfred Green's service in the Civil War. I
note that a biography (see below) rpeorts he was in the 5th Regiment, but
Company K. Regiments in that time were sometimes renumbered as a state
regiment is incorported into a broader force, or forces are realigned, or
reassigned.

A burial memorial for Eliza Ellen Decker Green is linked to Alfred's memorial
on Find a Grave, reporting her as his wife. The name matches the censuses
available. The grave marker for Eliza Ellen Decker reprots she died on 21
March 1868.

In the 1870 census the second person reported, normally where the wife is
reported, is also named Eliza. This Eliza Green is keeping house, but this
census did not report relationships to the head of the household. But she is
only 21 years old. Since the first child Olive (Olevia) is 8 years old, this
unidentified Eliza could not be the mother of these children. Did Alfred
marry a second wife named Eliza? Or is this a niece or other relative? This
Eliza was born about 1849 in Missouri. A family genealogy referenced on
Eliza's FAG memorial indiocates she was born in 1845 in Missouri.

No 1880 census record has been confirmed for Alfred.

-----------------
The following 1880 census record appears to match Alfred. The wife is also
named Eliza, but is about 10 years older than the Eliza in the 1870 household.
But the children are more like a similar family of Andrew McClure Green, born
in Missouri, and his wife Eliza Jane Huff. They are buried in the Greenwood
(City) Cemetery in Weatherford, while Alfred and Eliza are buried in Clark
Cemetery, in the rural area north of Weatherford. Indications are that Alfred
and his Eliza and family lived on a farm in the county.

No connection has been confirmed between Andrew McClure Green and Alfred
Green's family. Andrew's parents are identified by links on their burial
memorials on Find a Grave as Zedekiah Samuel Green (1803 - 1873) snd Susanna
McClure Green (1811 - 1888) from North Carolina.

There are several lines of Greens in Parker County and nearby counties who are
not connected or whose connections are uncertain, some married into the same
families in the county and neaighboring areas. Andrew McClure Green and
Eliza Jane Huff had one son named Zedediah, who may be reported in the second
child here, whose name in this censews was written over and confused,
difficult to read.

Alfred's grave marker does have his name as A M Green, matching the above
census. The age and resulting birth date of A M Green in the census is closer
to Andrew, born in 1829, than to Alfred, born in 1833 (according to his
grave). AM's wife EG in 1880 is about 10 years older that the 21 years of the
young Eliza in Alfred's hosuehold in 1870, hwo may not even be his second
wife. Their birth states differ as do Andrew's and Alfred's. But Alfred's
biography-obit (see end of notes) reports that Eliza Decker Green died in
1868.

In 1900, Alferd was living in the household of his son Raleigh, again in the
rural Precinct 2 of Parker County. His obit below reports he died on his own
farm, so it is not clear if in 1900 he was in Raliegh's household on Raleigh's
farm (he is reported as owning the farm) or Raleigh's home was on the same
farm land.

burial in the Dodson Cemetery, wihch cannot be identified. It may be an older

No absolute dates are provided, no date on the published obituary was
available, so the obituary provides no date of death. His grave has the death
date as 15 November 1907, matching Friday as reported by the obit. From the
language of the obituary, we can tell the article was published the day of
burial, which the headline announced as Saturday, the day after death.

November 6, I833 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He married Eliza Ellen Decker
born June 2. 1845, from Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania. Sometime
between the years 1857 and 1861, Alfred M. Green was granted a quarter acre
section (160 acres) of land in Precinct 1, the Wright Community, Parker
County, Texas where he established a working farm.

In l862, Alfred M. Green enlisted to serve the Confederate cause in the
American Civil War as a Private in the 5th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (5th
Mounted Volunteers) from Parker County, Texas, Company K. His muster out of
service year was 1864. Following his service to the Confederacy, his wife,
Eliza Ellen (Decker) Green, mother of two children, passed away at the age of
23, on March, 21, 1868 in Parker County, Texas.

According to the 1870 United States Federal Census, Alfred M. Green, a widower
[the 1870 census did not report marital status], and his two children are
found living in Precinct 2, Parker County, Texas. The 1880 United States

family appear to be Andrew McClure Green] The 1900 United States Federal
Census documents the Alfred M. Green family living in Justice Precint 2,
Parker County, Texas.

Atfred M. Green, American Civil War veteran and pioneer farmer died November
15, 1907 in Parker County, Texas. He is buried beside his wife Eliza Ellen

Notes for Ally GREEN

According to a marriage record, Ally Greene and her sister were born before the
marriage of their father Ambrose to his long-time wife Nancy Watson in 1845.
In 1850 Ambrose's wife appears as Lavina, which may be a second name for
Nancy. This means Nancy (Lavina) was not their mother, since both were born
before 1845.
