Genealogies give the name of this person as Almer. I notice that in the 1900 census, the name is Allma. The Almer could be a dialectic phonetic variation very common in the US, for the more standard Alma/Allma. But since it was pronounced that way, this may have been taken as the proper form by the family, and the census taker "corrected" it to the more common form. More likley, the form Almer found in some genealogies is taken from the spelling in the 1910 census, which is a likely place for the local pronunciation to be recorded. Theform Alkmer is used on his memroial on Fidn a Grve, but his grave actually has only his middle name Burt. 1900 Federal Census, Faulkner County, Arkansas, 15 June, Cypress Township, District 27, Page 7B, House #138, Family #142 Green, John Head W M Feb 1851 49 Married 22 years MO MO TN Farmer Owns Farm Green, Margaret J Wife W F Nov 1858 41 Married 22 years 9 children/8 living MO TN TN Green, Allma B Son W M Sept 1898 1 Single AR MO MO 1910 Federal Census, Garvin County, Oklahoma, 28 April, Justice Whitebead Township, District 88, page 5B, Hse/Fam #73 Green, John Head M W 59 Married 32 years MO MO TN Farmer Rents [b abt 1851] Green, Margarete J Wife F W 52 Married 32 years 10 children/9 living MO TN TN [b abt 1858] Green, Almer B Son M W 11 Single AR MO MO Farm Laborer [b abt 1899] --------------------- Almer Burt Green Birth Sep. 17, 1898 Arkansas Death Dec., 1980 Davis, Murray County, Oklahoma Obituary in Davis News Dec 18 1986 [but the grave says it was 1980, as does the Social Security records. Nieces and nephews called her Aunt Rettie. Grandchildren called her Grandma. From an early age our parents made sure we learned the full names of our grandparents and aunts and uncles. Before the death of her mother, Lou Ada Caldonia West Green in 1907, Rettie's family lived around Center. Their farm and old Center community was north of where the Center intersection is now on Hwy 19. Rettie went to school at Pickett School east of Center on the north side of the road. -- Loretta Gregory Gay, personal communication to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 2 June 2018 Rettie's mother died in Center in 1907, and is buried in the Center Cemetery. Joe moved to Marlow in Stephens County and was enumerated there in the 1910 census as a widowed head of household with his children. My mother Lou Ila Jenkins found among her papers a school report card for her mother, in the name Retta Green. This was a report card for the school year 1911-12 in Stephens County, Oklahoma. The family was living a little south of Marlow, Oklahoma, at that time, in Richland Township. The card does not give the name of the specific school. In the 1910 census, her name is not written clearly in the almost illegible hand of the enumerator. 1910 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 25 April, Richland Township, District 243, Page 6B (No House or Family numbers) Green, Joe Head M W 34 Widowed OK AL AL Green, Re-a Dau F W 14 OK OK OK (the loop of the e is just extended up and forward. At least two summers I went up and stayed with them for a while. I remember grandma reading her Bible to me every evening, sitting in her rocking chair beside a small table with a kerosene lamp. When i stayed with them, I would walk with her about a quarter mile down the road to the section line corner for a Holiness Church worship service held in the schoolhouse. Most family gatherings were held at their home. I remember Christmas gatherings there. Once we three boys stayed with Grandpa and Grandma while our parents went to the Texas State Fair in Dallas. I remember when my uncles built them a new house. And I remember when years later they turned on the electricity to the house when the Rural Electric Cooperative got the system run to that part of the county. The Gregorys never did have a phone. Andy and Rettie worked their farm, raising their own meat and vegetables. I remember hunting squirrels in their woods southeast of the house. Andy also worked part of the time for others in the Broom Corn fields, for which Lindsay was known in earlier years. My mother told me about her father and many of the men of the county working in the broom corn harvest. In a previous era, Lindsay was the broom corn capital of the world. When I was younger, there was a sign on each road as you entered Lindsay that presented the city's slogan, "Lindsay broom corn sweeps the world." 1940 Federal Census, Garvin County, Oklahoma, 8 April, Lindsay, District 25-12, page: 5B, House 50, Rented Gregory, Andy Head M W 47 born Tenn Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Farming Gregory, Reta [Retta] Wife M W 44 born Okla Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Gregory, Everett W 16 born Okla Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Gregory, Desy [Dessie] Dau F W SIngle 25 born Okla Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Gregory, Josephine Dau F W SIngle 22 born Okla Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Gregory, Lou Ila Dau F W 19 Single born Okla Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Gregory, Wanda Dau F W 13 born Okla Rural Garvin Co in 1935 Alpharetta Mae Green Gregory Birth Oct 21, 1895 Marietta, Love County, Oklahoma Death Apr 24, 1963 Wynnewood, Garvin County, Oklahoma Parents: T J Green (1873 - 1947) Lou Ada Green (1877 - 1907) Married 10-26-1913 Spouse Andy Gregory (1892 - 1975) Children: Dessie Lea Gregory Spann (1915 - 2003) Alpha Josephine Gregory Hayes (1917 - 2005) Alfred Andrew Gregory (1919 - 1920) Everett Wayne Gregory (1923 - 2009) Wanda June Gregory Trout (1927 - 2013) Siblings: Birdie Green (1898 - 1898) Minnie Lee Green Thornton 1899-1941 Norah Green (1902 - 1902) David Homer Green 1906-1989 Burial Green Hill Cemetery, McClain County, Oklahoma, Section 4, Row 14 Created by DLT Jul 04, 2011 -- Find A Grave Memorial #72684641, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72684641

In the 1850 census, a record that appears to be for him has his wife as Lavina. Maybe Nancy's full name was Nancy Lavnia. Or is this just a very similar couple? In 1850, Ambrose and his wife Lavina are enumerated in neighboring DeKalb County, to the north of Cherokee County, Alabama. Apparently it took 11 months (17 December) for the authorities to get to DeKalb across the county line to the north to enumerate Ambrose and his neighbors! I suspect the farm they are working in DeKalb County is very near their farm home in Cherokee County, since they are all enumerated in Cherokee County in 1840 and 1860. In 1861 Cass County was renamed to Bartow County, in honor of Francis S. Bartow, because of General Lewis Cass' support for the Union in the Civil War. ---------------- History Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3, 1832, and named Cass County, after General Lewis Cass (1782-1866) Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, Minister to France and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan, who was instrumental in the removal of Native Americans from the area. However, the county was renamed on December 6, 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow because of Cass's support of the Union, even though Bartow never visited in the county, living 200 miles away near Savannah all of his life. Cass had supported the doctrine of popular sovereignty, the right of each state to determine its own laws independently of the Federal government, ironically the platform of conservative Southerners who removed his name. The first county seat was at Cassville, but after the burning of the county courthouse and the Sherman Occupation, the seat moved to Cartersville, where it remains. The county was profoundly affected by the Civil War, setting it back economically for many decades. May 18 and 19, 1864, General George Henry Thomas led the Army of the Cumberland after General William J. Hardee's Corps of the Army of Tennessee, and General James B. McPherson led his Federal Army of the Tennessee flanking Hardee's army to the west. This huge army was disruptive and sought food. Elements were out of control and sacked homes, depleting meager supplies. Property destruction and the deaths of one-third of the county's soldiers during the war caused financial and social calamity for many. -- "Bartow County, Georgia," Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartow_County,_Georgia ---------------- In the 1860 census he has a 40-year-old woman and three children, ages from 16 years to 3 months. See also the notes on the 1880 census. Ancil's age of 64 would make his birth about 1796, but other records indicate he was born about 1786. This would mean he was 74 years old. His 1870 age of 83 is close to this, yielding a birth date in about 1787. 1860 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 3 August, 1011 District, P O Conesanga, page 114, Hse #810, Fam #767 Ansel C Green 64 M Farm Laborer $0 Real Estate $150 Personal born SC [b abt 1796] Winney Green 40 F born SC [b abt 1820] Isaac V Green 16 M Farm Laborer born NC [b abt 1844] William Green 4 M born GA [b abt 1856] Elizabeth J Green 9mos F born GA [b 1860] Ancil's ages in censuses vary, indicating birth years from 1786 to 1796. Before coming to Alabama, he lived several years in Hall County, Georgia. His name was found on the voter list from militia elections in Hall County in 1849. In 1850, he was living in Hall County with his wife Elizabeth, son Willis (12), daughter Mary (10), and his son John (7). On the 1860 Hall County census, he is found with wife, Elizabeth (who is also from South Carolina), son Willis (22), son John (16); Mary is not living at home at this time - she would be 20 years old, so she is probably married. Ten years later, on the 1870 Hall County census, Andrew J. is 55 years old, and his wife, Elizabeth, is 50. There is also a 19 year old female, Mary J. Dowdy, living with them, laboring on farm. Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Andrew moves to Blount County, Alabama. I'm not sure if Elizabeth came to Alabama with him or died in Georgia. Andrew is the head of the household in 1880 in Blount County, Alabama; and Ben H. Amason (20 years old) is living with him, working on farm. On January 1, 1881, Andrew marries Julie Ann Amason* (Ben's mother). The date of Andrew's death is not certain, but it was before 1900. On the 1900 Blount County census, Julie Ann Green is living with her son Ben and his family, and she is fisted as a widow. *Julie Ann's Maiden name was Hawkins. Her father was Dennis Hawkins and her mother was Elizabeth Campbell. Julie Ann's first marriage was to William McDonald Amason. William and Julie Ann had 6 children; (1) Mary C., (2) Harvey P., (3) Sarah Eliza (married Melvin Staton - my great grandfather), (4) Lucinda T., (5) William, and (6) Benjamin Horton Amason (married Phebe Josephine Doty - Aquilla Duty's sister - Aquilla is Rod's grandfather). -- Story on Ancestry.com, courtesy of L G, Gurthrie Family Tree, acessed 11 July 2015 -------------- -------------- Andrew Jackson Green, Born Abt 1815 in the (Pendleton District) South Carolina Some question about the date he died. 1882-1889, in Blount County is most likely correct and he is buried in Nectar Cem Spouse Elizabeth, Born in 1821 in South Carolina. I remember Arlie somewhat. I remember he lived at Sunray, Texas. I recall he once came by our house in Quanah, Texas, I think while on some business travel. I remember he was alone. I have a strong memory of his playing our piano for us in our living-dining room. We also went to Sunray to visit him and maybe other family members, at least one time. For years after, every time I saw a Sunray DX service station, I would think of Arlie in Sunray, Texas, the home of the petroleum company. Arlie may have moved later to Canyon, Texas. His brother Harry lived in Canyon. Information in the Social Security Index for an Arlie Green that appears to be our Arlie, he was living in Borger at the time of his death in 1981. Arlie was a piano tuner. Cousin Loretta Gregory Gay has a business card of Arlie's for his piano service business in Sunray. I did not have information on Arlie's wife from our side of the family. But Arlie had several children. Their names were given to me by Loretta Gregory Gay. Randy, Ronnie, Ralph, Sheldon and Ray Dean, and one daughter Sharon. In October 2010 I got more complete names from Hugh Green, and information on Arlie's wife. Arlie married Clara Edith Benger. "Their birth order as best we (who went to school with them) recall, was: Ralph Crayton (died 1982) , Ray Dean, Ronnie, Sharon LaGayle, Sheldon Earl (died 1975), and Randy Sherman." -- Hugh Green, via email from Rachel Ruthart to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 October 2010 Several genealogies (seemingly sharing or copying information) report Arlie's middle name as Wesley. This is confirmed by his son Sheldon Earl's death certificate giving the full name of Sheldon's father. I have found both families in their separate places in Arkansas, where Arthur E Green, son of John and Margaret, was born in 1894, in Faulkner County. The Arthur Eugene who married Alma Young was in the places documented here, and the children shown here are those reported in censuses of 1920-30 for Arthur E and his wife Alma Minnie Young. It is possible that this Arthur's middle name was also Eugene, and he is reported that way in two genealogies. I am somewhat uncertain however, since there has been confusion with the genealogies for Arthur Eugene of Dallas County, and these that correctly report Arthur E and Alma Minnie have insufficient details to appear definitive. One of them does, however, provide death information for this Arthur E. I originally thought this Arthur Eugene was the Arthur, son of Jacob and Susan Green, found in Hugo, Oklahoma, in 1910. I later, however, found the earlier censuses of the families and clearly confirmed that this was a different family. The 1900-20 censuses contributed to the misidentification by reporting this Arthur E as born in Oklahoma. However, censuses with the correct spouse and children reported his with a birth in Faulkner County, Arkansas. I then also found this family in Cypress Township, Faulkner County, Arkansas, which I personally know from living in Conway, Arkansas, also in Faulkner County. Then I found the 1930 census for Arthur and Alma, with their second daughter Catherine. They were in Gainesville, Texas, for both 1920 and 1930 censuses. With only the 1920 census, I interpreted this as a confirmation of Jacob's son Arthur, since Jacob and his siblings were from Gainesville. However, in the Gainesville census in 1930, the birthplace of Arthur E was reported as Arkansas, which matched the rising evidence from the Arkansas family, though in 1920 Arthur's birthplace was reported as Oklahoma, which matched our Arthur Green. The Arkansas origin was supported by the fact that the birthplace of the father of Arthur Eugene in both 1920 and 1930 was given as Missouri, which matches the genealogies with several generations coming from Virginia through Tennessee and Missouri to Arkansas before we find Arthur E's parents John and Margaret in Garvin County, Oklahoma in 1910. 1910 Federal Census, Garvin County, Oklahoma, 28 April, Justice Whitebead Township, District 88, page 5B, Hse/Fam #73 Green, John Head M W 59 Married 32 years MO MO TN Farmer Rents [b abt 1851] Green, Margarete J Wife F W 52 Married 32 years 10 children/9 living MO TN TN [b abt 1858] Green, Arthur E Son M W 16 Single AR MO MO Farm Laborer [b abt 1894] 1920 Federal Census, Cooke County, Texas, 2 January, Gainesville Ward 3, District 32, page 1A, Hse #8, Family #4 Green, Arthur Head M W 25 OK MO OK Pump Man, Oil Refinery Green, Alma Wife F W 26 OK TX TX Green, Leolia Daughter F W 2 OK OK OK 1930 Federal Census, Cooke County, Texas, 11 April, Gainesville Ward 3, District 4, page 8A, 411 Weaver St, Hse #187, Family #193 Green, Arthur E Head M W 36 Married at age 20 AR MO USA Laborer, Oil Refinery Green, Alma Wife F W 36 Married at age 21 OK USA GA Green, Leolia Daughter F W 12 OK AR OK Catherine Daughter F W 4yrs 8mos OK AR OK [b abt July 1925] The other Arthur Eugene Green from Dallas County, Arkansas, was born in 1907, and he was married to Mamie Irene Mann.
