Notes for Isaac Tipton GREEN

In 1850, Isaac and his wife Mahala Carter Green have been married less than one
year, and are enumerated in a set of Greene households in Platte County,
Missouri. The head of the household listed after Isaac appears to be a
brother, Elisha Green, about 6 years older.

On the other side, the widow Ann Greene is head of the household and appears
to be Isaac and Elisha's mother. But from the marriage record, we see that
Ann Liinebaugh married John Green in 1841, while the sons Elisha and Isaac
Tipton Green (Greene) were born in 1822 and 1825 (or 1829, as Isaac's age in
his Confederate military record would inidicate). A sister Barsheba Carter is
in the household of Ann Greene with three children. One is only 2 years old.
It may be that the two older Carter children are the children of Barsheba's
late husband with his first wife.

"THE HANGING OF GREEN AND RAPP"
"On the night of that memorable 26th of September a company of cut-throats met
at the house of Jacob Fulcher, and hung him until he was unconscious. After
robbing his house, they went to the house of John Rapp, robbed him and hung
him on a leaning tree. They then went to TIP GREEN's and after robbing his
house, brought him to Rapp's and hung beside the dead body of Rapp. Two days
later I was ordered, as public administrator, to take charge of Rapp's estate.
The only valuable I found in his house was a twenty-dollar bill of Confederate
money lying on the floor. It was said that the possession of this money was
the excuse of hanging him. I did not inventory the $20."

"The (M) stands for Mary. I have my great grandmother's supplemental
application. Her name was Fannie Bryant Bruce. Her father was Hardy Bryant.
Hardy's mom was Fannie Green, daughter of Daniel Green & Mary Green. There
was the name Mashack in the old Green Bible, said William Bryant, brother of
Hardy Bryant. They were rejected on their Cherokee blood, but I know they
were Cherokee. Fannie Green was born in 1808, had a brother Isaac 1801, John

Notes for Israel William GREEN

"I’m the gr granddaughter of Israel William Green, son of Thomas, son of
Meshack. Israel moved to Louisiana and married at the age of 66 [or 64, as
below]; his wife was 22! Israel was 71 when my grandmother was born."
-- Mari Jayne Burke, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 September 2007

but they married in LA, so I think Israel traveled with the McKees and

-- Mari Jayne Burke, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 December 2007

Mari Jayne has provided some more specific dates and details in our ongoing
correspondence, as her research progresses.

=========================
"Israel William Green b 11-15-1802. I don´t know when or where he died. On
the 1900 census MC [Martha Catherine McKee] was living with Uncle Fred in
Bossier Parish, LA. I have Israel on the 1840, 1850 and 1880 census records.
Just cannot find him for 1860 and 1870. I think they were living in Bienville
Parish and those 1860 census records are lost. Israel married 7-10-1866 (64
yrs. Old) to Martha Catharine McKee (22 yrs. Old). She was born 6-26-1844 and
died 5-22-1914 per her tombstone in our family plot.

Their 4 children:
John Colbert Green b 8-8-1867
Israel Frederick “Fred” Green b 3-29-1869
Martha Elizabeth Green b 3-1871 (My grandmother called her Sister Lizzie.)
Mary Sirnorah Green b 3-26-1873 (Israel was 71 yrs. Old.) (My grandmother and
I were named after her even though it’s spelled differently.)"

I knew Uncle John and Uncle Fred. We lived with my maternal grandparents Mary
Sirnorah and Charles Albert Gorman.
-- Mari Jayne Burke, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 May 2008
=========================

The marriage was also in Bienville Parish.

-----------------
Bienville Parish (French: Paroisse de Bienville) is a parish located in the
northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census,
the population was 14,353. The parish seat is Arcadia.

The highest natural point in Louisiana, a hill known as Mt. Driskill, 535 feet
(163 m) in elevation, is located in north central Bienville Parish. The
mountain is located on private land with public access by walking trail. It
is named for James Christopher Driskill, a 19th-century landowner. Nearby is
Jordan Mountain, with an elevation of 493 feet (150 m).

Lake Bistineau and Lake Bistineau State Park embrace parts of Bienville and
neighboring Webster and Bossier parishes.

-----------------

The 1840 census for Israel was found only in 2017, by Mari Jayne Burke, who
had continue din correspondence with me since we had worked together on this
branch of our Green family by email in 2007 and 2008.

--------------------
I found my gr grandfather, Israel William Green, on the 1840 census in
Claiborne Parish, LA. (Transcribed as Isaac W. Green.) It shows 1 free white
male age 30-39, which would be Israel. It also shows 1 free white female age
60-69.

I wonder if this was his mother? Is there proof that she died in SC! I
can’t find any graves for either Israel or his mother in LA.
-- Mari Jayne Burke, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 25 June 2017
--------------------

The first census actually found was for 1880, when Israel was enumerated with
his wife Martha Catherine in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. At a later time the
1850 census was found, which reported Israel was unmarried. living in the
household of Phelix Lewis.

In 1880, the oldest child there is Jonathan, age 12 years. Catherine's age is
34, which is close to the figure Mari gives. If Catherine was 22 when they
married it was about 12 years before the census. Ages and birth years will
vary in the census, so even with Jonathan already 12, that is not a problem.

However, in this census you will note that Israel is reported as 76 years old.
This means going by the ages Mari has, Catherine had been married about 12
years, but Israel had been married about 10! Either Israel would be 78 or so,
or Mari has the age at time of marriage wrong. I'll go with Mari.

Some information suggests that Israel died in Bossier Parish. No death or
burial record has been found.

-----------------
Bossier Parish (French: Paroisse de Bossier) is a parish located in the U.S.
state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 116,979. The
parish seat is Benton. The principal city is Bossier City, which is located
east of the Red River from Shreveport, the seat of Caddo Parish. The parish
was formed in 1843 from the western portion of Claiborne Parish.

Bossier Parish is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical
Area.

Lake Bistineau and Lake Bistineau State Park are included in parts of Bossier
and neighboring Webster and Bienville parishes. Loggy Bayou flows south from
Lake Bistineau in southern Bossier Parish, traverses western Bienville Parish,
and in Red River Parish joins the Red River.

they had actually reported her age as 15, she should have been the last child.

Members of the Green and Jackson families moved from near Gainesville, Texas,
over the Red River border into Indian Territory.

I lose track of them in the 1870s to 1890s. But we know they were farther
north. Though details are few, we know they were in the north central area of
what became Oklahoma, from law enforcement records in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Jacob and his brothers Daniel and Jack, as well as what appears to be
Talitha's husband Abe Jackson, were in some scrapes with the law in Fort
Smith, which managed the justice for Oklahoma and Indian Territory.

I have not found details of their residence during the 1860s to 1890s. But in
1900 Abraham Jackson's widow Talitha (Telitha/Delitha) Green is in Marietta in
southern Chickasaw Nation, not far from the Red River. Likewise in 1900 I
find Talitha's brother Jacob and his wife Susan with their children in
Cherokee Nation.

In 1910, Jacob Green and his nephew, Abe and Talitha's son Sam, are in Nash
Township of Muskogee County, in the west central area of Oklahoma. In the
1870s, this was part of the Creek ation, just west of Cherokee Nation. This
was in the area administered by Judge Parker from Fort Smith. As we saw
above, Jacob and his family are listed in the Cherokee Nation census of 1900.
am Jackson and Stella Brewer are in the same township.

Note that John does not appear. Perhaps he died between 1900 and 1910. Note
also that the birth place of Jacob's mother has changed from Georgia to South
Carolina.

Jacob died in 1917. His wife Susan and sons Pink and Thomas were reported in
the 1920 Muskogee City/County Directory.

Susan and hjer sons moved to California, to Kerman, in Fresno County. To and
Susan were registered to vote in the rolls of 1938.

Notes for Jacob Andrew GREEN

Andrew's name is reported in the Green family information as Jacob Andrew. His
gravestone presents his name as Andrew J. In official documents he is known
only as Andrew Green.

The 1900 census for Weatherford, Parker County, Texas, tells us that Andrew
was born there before his parents moved to Cooke County, where they were
recorded with three children in 1910. Andrew's parents were married in
Weatherford in 1896.

they moved to Cooke County, or back to Weatherford.

Andrew appears to have been enumerated twice in this census, showing up again
in Eastland County on 25 February. He is in the household of his cousin,
Elbert E Martin, son of Nancy E Jackson Yeary Martin. His job in Eastland is
listed as Tank Setter in the Steel industry. We can tell his and Elbert's
work is related to the oil industry (matching Andrew's listing in Weatherford
a month earlier), because of the high number of oil field workers in the town,
and on the same page. One boarding house a few doors down has a large number
of single men working for an Oil Well Supply Company.

Several of us have been trying for many months (as of August 2009) to
determine the exact relationship of Andrew and his father James Daniel Green
to the Jackson and the other Greens kin to the Jacksons. This indication that
Andrew is a cousin to Elbert seems to confirm a report from Betty Jackson Hess
that this family of Greens were kin to her grandmother, Talitha Green Jackson,
wife of Abraham Jackson. Betty thought James Daniel was a son of one of
Talitha's brothers, but did not know which. But neither the Jacksons nor the
Greens of Talitha's family have information about a nephew of hers that would
match James Daniel.

In 1930 Andrew has married Essie L Johnson and they are living a few houses
down from Jim and Lizzie Jackson, who are enumerated in Household #137.

Notes for James Daniel GREEN

Betty Jackson Hess mentions in her letters that Jim (James or J D) Green was a
son of one of Talitha Green Jackson's brothers. But none of the brothers I
have info on has a child named James or J D. Later information obtained in
August 2008 from a descendant of James D filled out information on the family,
indicating that Mollie's father was named James Daniel.

One or more genealogies have as Jim's birthplace Indian City, Payne, Oklahoma.
There is no such place. This place is also stated in the same genealogies as
the place of death for several individuals even in my family, when we know
definitely their places of death or burial in other locations. This appears
to be the result simply of sloppy mechanical merging with no research
verification.

I have been unable to locate an actual city named Indian City, in Payne or any
other Oklahoma County. I am aware of the commercial Indian City, near Anadarko
(Caddo County), which is a demonstration village and arts presentation center
for tourists. I have also seen this location listed for certain individuals
born in the Unassigned Lands of Indian Territory-Oklahoma Territory. This
designation is an error.

There was no Payne County until 1898, when it was initially created as County
#6 of Oklahoma Territory. This same scenario has been confirmed by the
Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce.

James Daniel Green was understood by his descendants to be a full-blood
Chickasaw born in Indian Territory. However, the censuses recording J D and
his family list them all as White.

I have noted that in states other than Oklahoma, there are few enumerations of
people with the designation "Indian," with only two designations being common,
"White" or "Black" (also recorded as "Negro" in some years or locales). Other
families named Green who were Indian are clearly so designated. It is not
very likley that James Daniel was full-blood Native American, with blue eyes
(WWI draft registration).

This report of J D as a full-blood Indian would indicate that James Daniel
Green is not related, at least directly, to the Green line of Toliver and his
sons and daughter Talitha. Some of that family also did later marry Chickasaw
women, which I also report in this genealogy. Others Greens married Choctaws.
However, in some censuses, J D's father and mother are both reported as born
in Georgia, where the other line of Greens came from.

The connection of J D with Cooke County might also indicate some connection we
have not discovered, since after migrating from Georgia, Toliver Green lived
in Cooke County, Texas, being reported there in the 1860 census and at least
through 1866 on tax and military rolls.

Betty Jackson Hess reported in Letter 1 and Letter 8 (private collection) that
she remembered three children of J D Green, Andrew and Oscar and a daughter
Mollie. I had in the meantime found information on J D (Jim) Green in some
censuses and burial information on Jim and two wives in the Weatherford
Cemetery registries. I continued working with two cousins on the Jackson side
to uncover more details on the identity of these Greens.

In August 2008, Marion Mixon obtained family genealogy information from a
descendant of James Daniel, Houston Green. This information reported a son
named Jacob Andrew and a son named Oscar Landon. These match the two sons
that Betty Jackson Hess remembered. However, I see Houston lists one child of
Hattie (the maiden name is reported in Houston's information as Cain, while
the info on the cemetery register erroneously indicates her parents were named
Lane).

There was no child named Mollie reported, but the daughter of J D Green and
Hattie in this genealogy was Mary Louise. Mary L is also recorded in the
household in the 1930 census. (See below.) Mollie is a common nickname for
Mary and would refer to Mary Louise.

Betty says of J D: "He was the same age as my sister Bessie. She was born in
1896." (James D's age in censuses indicate a birth in 1898. The Green family
genealogy obtained later from Houston Green reports J D's birth date as 10 May
1877, and this date is reported on his gravestone.) Andrew's cemetery listing
in the Curtis Cemetery register gives his info as b February 26, 1898 d
February 18, 1983 "husband of Essie." This matches Andrew's age in the 1910
census, age 12 (born abt 1898) and the 1920 census, age 21 (born abt 1899).
This matches Betty's information about Andrew Green.

J D Green's info in the same cemetery (next page in the data sheet) reports:
J D Green b May 10 1877 d March 7 1934.
This puts him about age 21 at the birth of Andrew. This birth date differs
from that reported in 1918 on his WWI draft registration card in Navarro
County, Texas, which reports 10 May 1875.

J D and Arilla show up in the 1900 census in Weatherford. This informs us
that Andrew was born in Weatherford. Birth dates here don't match the family
information for James Daniel and Andrew, being two years earlier for both.
Arilla (Arrelia) is reported with the correct month and year from the family
information.

In 1910 we find Jim in Cooke County, Texas, married to a wife born in Texas,
and all his children are reported born in Texas in both the 1910 and 1920
census. The sons Andrew and Oscar reported by Betty Hess are reported in the
1910 census. In this census the state of birth for both paretns has changed
to Georgia.

There is a third child, Jesse J, reported as a daughter, even though the
spelling is a male name. (Later information from Houston Green indicates her
full name was Jessie Jewel.) Jessie is also in the 1920 census, still with
Andrew and Oscar, just as Betty said.

In Letter 8 extra notes Betty Hess refers to Jim Green's wife as Rillie
Bridgeman: "I remember Jim Green's wife's name. She was Rillie Bridgeman."
I found her as well as Jim's second wife in Cemetery Records for Parker
County.

Rillie is Arilla, Jim's first wife, buried in City Greenwood Cemetery. Born
Dec 6, 1876, died Jun 27, 1914, noted as "wife of J D Green." In 1910 the
wife of James D Green is transcribed by Ancestry as Leya R, but this is
probably meant to be Liza R. The R would be for Rillie, a nickname for
Arilla, by which Betty Jackson Hess refers to James' wife in her letters.
Birth year from the age of Liza R in the 1910 census is abt 1877, which
matches the gravestone birth date of Dec 6, 1876.

In 1918, when James registered for the WWI draft, his wife is Lillie Green.
This is his second wife, Lillie Harriet Cain

The head of the family is listed in 1920 as Jim D Green, matching our James D
Green of 1910. No Mollie is listed yet in these censuses, and we later learn
that Mollie must be a nickname for the daughter of James Daniel's second wife
Hattie Cain. This daughter is reported in the Green family information as
Mary Louise, born in 1923.

In the Curtis Cemetery records (Weatherford, Texas) we find Jim's second wife
Hattie, which Betty refers to on p 2 of Letter 8. "Jim Green married Hatty
Cane." (Initially I understood Betty's unsteady handwriting to be saying
Lane. Then in September 2008, Houston Green, a descendant of JD Green sent
family information that gave Hattie's name as Hattie Cain. So I expect the
name Betty wrote in her letter was Hatty Cane. I will use the spelling Cain
in the Green family genealogy.)

The Curtis Cemetery register lists Green, Hattie Harriet (and we know Hattie
is a nickname for Harriet, also). Annotation on the grave/register gives her
husband's name as Jim D.

Hattie/Harriet was born on November 20 1893 and died on February 4, 1928.
[This death date matches the date given in family information from Houston
Green] This places her as the second wife of Jim Green, since Rillie died in
1914.

This would mean that Rillie is the wife (Leya R) in the 1910 census for James
D Green, and Hatty is the second wife in the 1920 census. The names were
different, but I had no way to probe for identity. The interesting thing is
the wife in 1920 is called Lillie. This led me to surmise that was a second
name besides Hattie for Harriet. Maybe she was Lillie Harriet or Harriet
Lillie. Some genealogies do report her as Lillie Harriet.

A problem with this is that the later-obtained information from Houston Green
reports that James Daniel did not marry Hattie until 1921. Perhaps the family
recorded the date wrong or misread it in transcribing it from the Family
Bible, which is stated to be the source of the information. But their
daughter Mary Louise (Mollie) was not born until 1923, which matches better
with a marriage in 1921.

Then another factor that further argues against this Lillie being Hattie Cain
is the birth date. Lillie is age 23, meaning born about 1897. But the birth
date on Hattie Green's grave is 1893. But if this wife of 1920 is not Hattie
Cain, then that means James Daniel Green had another wife between Arilla and
Hatty, which the family information does not report. I cannot find any death
information for a Lillie Green. So this is still uncertain.

No connection has yet been found between Jim Green and the line of Toliver
Green, whose daughter married Abe Jackson, whose descendants Jim Green also
seems to be related to. There is one discrepancy in what Betty Jackson Hess
says. She comments that Andrew was born in Tennessee. The children of James
Green, Andrew, Oscar and Jessie, are all born in Texas. This would be
consistent with our Greens from Georgia.

All census reports say Jim was born in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Census
vary on the birthplace of his parents.

Mary L Green is the daughter of Lillie Harriett Cain. Felix appears to be
Minnie's son from her first marriage, and should be designated as Jim's
stepson rather than his son, or perhaps an adopted son.

The birth date on Jim's grave is different from that in earlier sources in his
life. His WWI registration gives his birth date as 10 May 1875.

Notes for James Elmer GREEN

Linda Dudley reports this child as James Elmer Green. When I first found this
information in early 2007, I was uncertain about the name James since there is
a later son named James Taylor Junior. He is listed in the 1920 census as J
Elmer Green.

It seemed odd that Elmer is also named James, though in earlier times I do
find two children with one of the same names in some families. I got a
confirmation of the name in July 2007, from a daughter-in-law of Elmer, Donna
Green:
"The J is for James Elmer. His father was James Taylor."
-- Donna Green, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, July 2007

Elmer lived at Grand Prairie, Dallas County, Texas, according to cousin
Loretta Gregory Gay, the family genealogist. She does not have a name for his
wife, but reports three sons, Stephen, Howard and Gerald. Stephen and Donna
Green and their family live in Grand Prairie now, only a few miles away from
my sons. I learned this by email while living in South Africa.

In May 2008, Donna gave me information on the death of Elmer and Zelma.
"Elmer died in Washington. Elmer and Zelma went to live with Howard about 3
years before Elmer died 21 Dec 1996 in Sedro Woolley, Skagit, Wa. Zelma died 4
Jan 2001 in the same place."
-- Donna Green, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, May 2008

On the same day I heard from Donna, I found a new anonymous genealogy
including the Lovins and some of the Greens. That genealogy, no longer online,
also reports the death date for Elmer as 21 Dec 1996.

With this information I was able to find other confirming sources. The Social
Security Death Index confirms the death information:
James E. Green
Born 23 Dec 1913
Died 19 Dec 1996
Last Residence 98284 Sedro Woolley, Skagit, Washington
SSN 462-03-0613 issued in Texas Before 1951

The Lovin-Green genealogy has a birth date one day earlier than that reported
by the SSDI. This genealogy confirms the birth place as Stephens County,
which we would expect from other family information.

Notice that the date of death in the SSDI also differs from Donna's date,
being 3 days earlier than the date Donna gives. The date of 19 Dec 1996 is
also reported by the Washington Death Index. I suspect that the earlier death
date is the actual date of death recorded on the death certificate, while the
later date of 21 Dec 1996 is the date of funeral and burial.

The Washington Death Index adds some additional information, but also reports
the date of death as 19 Dec 1996.

Place of Death Mt. Vernon
Age 82, Estimated Birth Year 1914
Residence Sedro Woolley

The Death Index confirms the address as Elmer's last residence, buts adds that
his death actually occurred in Mt Vernon. I should think this was the
location of the hospital where he died. Mount Vernon is the county seat of
Skagit County, famous for its annual Tulip Festival.

Several genealogies attach the following Find a Grave memorial for Jame Ira
Green to James the same of Shadrack L Green. But I find that his Georgia
death record (transcripotin) reports his father's name as Ira Green. This may
be the wrong James Green, even though this burial is in Gwinnett County, wehre
Shadrack and his family lived, and other names match children of Shadrack in
this same cemetery.

Further searches after finding this full name on the grave memorial led to a
transcripoitn of a death record. But this shows the father's name as Ira
Green, rather than Shadrack Green. This may indicate other errors and
anomalies int eh list of children of Shadrack and his two wives. No burial
record has been found for another James Green matching Shadrack's son.

Notes for James Isaac GREEN

James was born in 1880 in Texas. His birth certificate reports his place of
birth as Glen Rose, Bosque County.

Texas Birth Certificates

Father John Green, Residence Glen Rose, Texas, born in Missouri, Occupation

Mother Marguriet Jane Kilmer, Residence Glen Rose, Texas, born in Douglas
County, Missouri
Birth certified by mother, current residence Route 1, Wynnewood, Oklahoma
Affidavit issued 9 March 1942 in Garvin County, Oklahyoma
This child was number two in sequence, of a total of 6 born
Certificate approved by the court 16 Martch 1942 in Bosque County, Texas

At first look, this is puzzling. The city of Glen Rose is in Somervell
County. Family sources report the place of birth as Eulogy, Texas, which is
in Bosque County. Glen Rose is very close to the county line with Bosque.
Their farm was on a Glen Rose Rural Route, just over the Bosque Co line. The
community there was called Eulogy.

----------------
EULOGY, TX
By Karen Yancy

EULOGY, TEXAS. Eulogy is near Farm Road 56 some nine miles northeast of
Walnut Springs and fifty miles northwest of Waco in northern Bosque County.
Charles Walker Smith founded the settlement when he moved his store there from
Brazos Point; the store opened on July 11, 1884, and in 1885 a post office was
established in it.

The community originally applied for a post office under the name Smithville,
in honor of a man called Uncle Billye Smith, but since there was already a
Smithville in Texas, Smith's sister, Julia Smith Mickey, may have recommended
the name Eulogy, based upon the idea that everyone eulogized Uncle Billye.
This post office name was approved, and the office operated until 1912.

In the 1890s Eulogy supported a school, at least three churches, a steam
gristmill and gin, and several other retail and service businesses. Around
1900 a two-story wooden school building was erected at the community; the
school's top floor served as a meeting hall for various associations. This
building burned in 1929 and was later replaced by a brick structure. The
school was eventually consolidated with those of Walnut Springs, after which
the school building was used for community functions.

The number of rated businesses at Eulogy had fallen to two by 1931, and after
1961 none were reported there. During the 1890s Eulogy's population was
estimated at between 100 and 200, but in 1933 it fell to ninety-three and then
by 1974 to forty-five, at which level it was still reported in 2000.

The memorial for James Isaac Green on Find a Grave reports some helpful
details about his family and his life. One anomaly occurs. The reported
birth place is different in two different places. His birth place is first
reported as Bosque County, but then a comment reports he was born in Glen
Rose, which is in neighboring Somervell County.
