Notes for James Isaac GREEN

In the 1870 census, James is reported as James I, age 8. The middle initial
probably stands for Isaac, his grandfather's name.

James' age here would indicate he was born about 1880 or 1881. Family
genealogies report his birth date as 22 July 1880. His wife is the same age
here, though her gravestone says her birth date is 13 May 1882. The 1900

as April.

BIRTH 1801 South Carolina, United States
DEATH BEF 3 JUL 1863 Ga, Hall Co.

Note that James and Oliver are reported to have died on the same date and
place. I also found at least one other genealogy that has records for James M
Green for Oliver D, which seems even more suspicious. The reported death date
and place reported above for both James and Oliver are the same as the Civil
War record for Oliver D Green. The datre above for James' death is the date
tha he was mustered out of service in the Confederate States Army, according
to the military record below. There is, in fact, a second record for James M
Green with a different death date in 1864, though the location is the same.

In the 1850 census matching James' family, the child matching him is reported
as 17 yeas old, under the initals that look like IM. But it is probably meant
to be J M, which matches James M in the list of children found above and in
many other records and sources.

A regiment roster reports that James died of measles soon after joining the
army. His brother Thomas Benton Green was in the same regiment. Also in the
list is a William J Green, their nephew, the nephew of their brother Tyree.
William die din January 1865, while his brother Thomas was released at the end
of the war.

The identity of the other Greens in this regiment list are not known. I
suspect that the Benton A Green was actually Thomas Bention. Note that all
these Green surnamed individuals joined the army on the same day. I suspect
that there was a confusion over the name Thomas Bention, and the middle name
got entered as another erosn. This list notes that there is no further record
on that name.

Notes for James Moore GREEN

A transcription of North Carolina Marriage Records reports the registration of
the marriage of Hanna McSwain and James M Green.

GREEN, James Monroe and McSWAIN, Hannah

Reg. 26 December 1860 (Page 175)
Note: s/o James Monroe Green and Narcissa Hamrick

-- GREEN(E) Marriages in Western NC Counties,

Note that this entry lists Hannah's husband as James Monroe Green, the name
others report for his father, while his name is reported by descendants and
genealogies as James Moore Green. Some other sources have the same name for
father and son, while others have the different names as I report in this
genealogy: Father, James Monroe Green; Son, James Moore Green. In
correspondence with a descendant, Donald Greene, I asked about this matter.
His reply refers to some confusion even in family records:

"A cousin of mine and me just recently had this same discussion. We believe
his name to be James Moore Green. He is listed in his Civil War records as
James Moore and Moore is a frequently used middle name in the Green(e) and
McSwain family. This is just our opinion but our family has always recorded it
as James Moore. However, on the death certificate of his son Gilead Green his
name is listed as James Monroe. So there is some confusion even in the
family."
-- Donald Greene, email correspondence to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 3 July 2008

The cousin Donald refers to also contacted me and confirmed the name as James
Moore Green
-- Wanda Rabb, email correspondence to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 November 2008

The Hamrick Data pages report that J M died in 1901, and this seems to be the
date on the gravestone. But in the 1880 census, Hannah is reported as a widow
in a household with her children, living next door to her parents in (York
County, South Carolina). This presented a conundrum, since the date of death
on James' grave, next to Hannah, is December 3, 1901. Previous data I had
seen in the Hamrick pages had also reported his death as occurring in 1901.

"Hamrick, Narcissus (1806 - ); spouse: Green, James M (1802 - 1890)
- m. Est 1822 in Rutherford, NC; child: Green, James Moore (1842 - 1901)"
-- Hamrick Data Pages -- McSwain-Padgett-Moore-Green,
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hamrick/wga50.html

A fascinating story was submitted by a descendant about an episode in James
Moore's life. This explains why James was away from home in 1880. He had two
families.

===============================
James Moore Green was arrested by federal troops in Rutherford Co., North
Carolina, in 1871 for "Ku Kluxing." The jails were so full of Klansmen that
many were released pending trial. James Moore Green never showed up for his
trail. He fled to Pittsylvania County, Virginia where he met and married
Martha Rebecca Johnson on 28 Dec 1871. Martha did not know he was already
married with a family in Cleveland County, North Carolina. They had the
following children:  Edgar (married Bertha Frith); Narcissus "Sissie;" John;
James William; and Ollie Maude married Craig Stowe.

James Moore Green Jr stayed with his family in Virginia until his son Reuben
(from his Cleveland County family) came to Virginia and found him. He cried
and confessed to Martha about his family in return to his first family because
they needed him. Hannah allowed James to return to her and he lived out his
life with her in Cleveland County until his death on 3 Dec 1901. James and
Martha's son, Edgar, would visit his half-siblings in Cleveland County where
he was known to their children as "Uncle Edgar."
-- Doug Green, Personal communication in Genealogy Guestbook to Orville Boyd
Jenkins, 29 July 2009
===============================

This would mean he had been away from his family for nine or ten years when
Reuben found him in Virginia. The children listed for James and Martha is
consistent with this period of time. I have not been able, however, to find
James and Martha in the 1880 census in Pittsylvania or any other county in
Virginia.

Doug Green explains his relationship to James Moore Green:
"James Moore Green was my great-grandfather. JMG returned to NC before my
father's birth, but his father (Edgar) and his NC half-brothers visited back
and forth."
-- Doug Green, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 30 July 2009

The place of birth entry is confusing, mentioning a town in North Carolina,

each properly designated by state. This may mean the exact place is not
certain. I have been in that area and know that until recntly, the actual

Notes for James Taylor GREEN

James Taylor Green went by Taylor. My mother and her siblings called him Uncle
Taylor. Linda Hanks reports that James Taylor was a Baptist minister. This
occupation does not show up on the census reports, but it was quite common for
a minster to support his family with farming or a job.

I cannot find any entry for James Taylor or his father Jackson in the 1880
census. There are very many Taylor, and even James Taylor, individuals that
can be found in those years and later, but Jackson's family does not show up
anywhere. LIkewise, Jackson and family have not been found in the 1900
census.

This probably indicates they were in Indian Territory, as were some others of
the Green and related Jackson families, where no censuses were taken until
1900. I cannot understand why no entry is found for them, however, in 1900.
James was a little over 1 year old in 1880, and would have been about 21 in
1900, and did not marry until 1902.

Another Green family researcher has found a census entry that likely is for
our James Taylor Green, in Hill County, where we know his family had lived and
where his older brother Toliver Jorile Green was born and related Jacksons
were born. Taylor is living as a boarder in the home of Sidney A Faulkner,
while working as a Drug Store Clerk. No information has been found to help us
understand more about when and why he returned to his family's home place.
Probably Taylor was in touch with other Green or Barnett relatives there.

45, page 25A, Hse/Fam #50
Green, Taylor Boarder W M Jan 1879 21 Single TX Unknown Unknown Drug Store

The birth date given in this census differs from that reported in his Draft
Registration in 1918, 27 June 1878. I have not yet seen the actual census
sheet reported by this genealogy, but it could be a mis-reading of Jan. Also
years of birth are often wrong in the 1900 census. I have seen a one-year
discrepancy on between several Draft Registration records and family sources
or other public sources. I did not have a birth date for JT from the family.

In 1910, Taylor and Mattie Green are living in Marlow, Stephens County,
Oklahoma. Stephens County had been created out of Chickasaw Nation when the
Indian Territory nations and the Oklahoma Territory combined by treaty into
the new State of Oklahoma in 1907. Taylor is working in Marlow as a real
estate agent.

In 1918, Taylor and Mattie were living in Duncan, when he registered for the
US Military draft on 12 September 1918. This registration gives us his exact
birth date, 27 June 1878, but no place. The form used in 1918 eliminated
birth place, which was in the 1917 registration forms. Before finding this
Draft registration, I had only an approximate year from the census record,
1879, and the state, Texas. It is likely he was born in Hill County, Texas,
but no specific record has been found documenting this.

When I found Taylor's Military draft registration, I also found another James
Taylor Green whose draft registration card shows he was registered on the
exact same date, 12 September 1918! Both had signed their registration cards
with their full name, James Taylor Green. That other James Taylor registered
in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, and was a carpenter, born in 1980.
I found this eerie!

I have found many unrelated Green families with very similar names. There are
many Tolivers, several Taylors, even some other James Taylors, and of course
many Jameses, Johns and other common names.

I found a family with a child named James T, born in 1879, a year after our
James Taylor, but in Shelby County, Texas. The father is John Ogden and the
mother Nancy Ellen. apparently the same John. He also shows up as John Ogden
in a genealogy that has confused this family with our James Taylor and Mattie.
The compiler has mixed details from our family's James Taylor Green with this
Shelby County family. This is probably because Nancy Ellen was born in Potter
County, Texas, and James Taylor and Mattie later moved to West Texas, resident
in Parmer County, and Mattie died in Amarillo, Potter County.

John Ogden Green's wife Nancy E (Nancy Ellen Potts on the genealogy) was born
in Texas, neither one fitting the known details of James Taylor Green, son of
Jackson Green, son of Toliver Green.

This is a different Green family that has similar names. There are three
Greens next door to each other, but none of them are kin to us. This
particular John Ogden Green was born in Alabama, which doesn't match Toliver,
Jackson and Taylor's Green lineage.

The John Ogden Green in Shelby County was born in Alabama. His parents were
both born in South Carolina, which indicates he could have come from the same
general line of Greens that James Taylor is descended from. Our branch of
that South Carolina family had moved from South Carolina to Georgia in the
previous generation, before Taylor's father moved to Texas.

In the 1880 census in Shelby County, Texas, a Henry Green, living next door to
this John Ogden, was also born in Alabama. At an age of 26, one year older
than John, Henry appears to be a brother. Both his parents were also born in
South Carolina.

The Green on the other side of John is a bit older, age 32, and born in
Mississippi. But both his parents were born in South Carolina, like the other
two men. Since the parents of all three of these men were born in South
Carolina, they are probably all three brothers.

James Taylor's family was already in Indian Territory early during this time,
as we know other Green and Jackson families were. In the 1940 census (below)
Taylor reported he was born in Indian Territory. All the other censuses
report he was born in Texas. His next brother, Daniel David, was born in
Indian Territory in 1882. There were no censuses until 1900 in Indian
Territory. We have located some of them through legal records of other kinds.

We know Mattie's family were living there when she was born in November 1884.

I later found confirmation that Taylor was born in Hill County, Texas. On the
death certificate of his daughter Mable, who died at age 2, his birth place is
reported as Hill County, Texas.

Texas Death Certificate, Registration #125099
Mable Green
Born 13 Feb 1926 Duncan (Stephens Co), Oklahoma
Died 2 April 1928 Silverton, Briscoe County, Texas
** Father Taylor Green, born Hill Co, Texas **
Mother Mattie Lovin, born Davis (Murray Co), Oklahoma
Burial 3 April 1928 Silverton

This means he was living on a farm in Duncan, but also selling real estate in
Marlow. In the 1910 and 1920 census, he is a real estate agent. In 1920,
however, the census shows him and the family living in Marlow town. So they
moved from Duncan into Marlow between September 1918 and January 1920.

In 1920, Taylor Green is living in Marlow, Oklahoma, still working as a real
estate agent.

Note that the birthplace of the children's parents does not match the
birthplace of Taylor and Mattie shown here. The enumerator appears to have
just copied Mattie's information for all the children. Her birthplace is also
shown as Arkansas instead of Tennessee which we see in the 1910 and 1930
censuses.

They were living for a short time in or near Silverton, Texas, not far from
Amarillo. There was a daughter named Mable, or Mattie Mable, reported above
in the child's death certificate. Her death certificate reports she was born
in Duncan, Oklahoma, a little north of Marlow in 1926, but died a little over
two years later in Silverton Texas, on 2 April 1928. But by the 1930 census,
they were near the border of New Mexico in Friona, Texas.

This tells us they moved westward form Duncan about 1927. No burial record
has been found for Mattie Mabel in cemetery burial lists or Find a Grave
memorials.

By April census time in 1930, Taylor and Mattie had moved to Texas, farming in
Parmer County.

Mattie's mother's birthplace is now reported again as Tennessee, not Arkansas.
On the children's entries, the birthplace of both parents is correctly
reported in this census. It appears that Pearl is already married and out of
their household.

I was surprised to find that in the 1940 census, they were reported as living
in DeQueen, Sevier County, Arkansas, in the Washita/Ouachita mountains near
the Oklahoma border. This seems odd, since they had already moved to Friona,
Texas, near the New Mexico border, where they were enumerated in 1930. In
1940 Taylor is reported as a Real Estate salesman. Maybe that was the reason
they moved to Arkansas, and that did not work out. In his obituary, he was
reported as a Farmer, living in Friona, as in the 1930 census.

Notes for James Toliver GREEN

Family information conveyed to me by Loretta Gregory Gay, indicated that
Toliver Green married Amanda Tatum West near Marietta, Chickasaw Nation,
Indian Territory.

I later found their marriage license, however, which shows they were married
in Cook County, Texas, a few miles south of Marietta across the Red River.
Most likely the ceremony took place in the county seat of Gainesville, where
the certificate would have been issued. Further, the certificate indicates
they were both residents of Cook County.

The first child in this enumeration, Loula, appears to be Amanda's daughter
with her first husband Gus West. Because of the similarity of the name, I at
first thought it was Lou Ada Caldonia. Notice that her father's birth state
is "Unknown" instead of Texas, as the later children of James. But the family
has no information on another child of Amanda and her first husband Gus West.
We have information only for Lou Ada, born in 1877 (3 years old in the 1880
census) and George Taylor West, born in 1879. The birth date given here for
Loiula is 10 years younger than Lou Ada West.

In the 1910 census for Richland Township, Stephens County, Oklahoma, we find
related families living adjacent or close to each other. Dock and Julia
Gregory live next door to Joe Green. Joe's daughter Alpharetta Mae (listed as
Reta in this census) later married Dock's son Andy (Anda) Gregory. James
Toliver and family live just a few houses down, recorded on the same page of
the census.

This census reports that this is a second marriage for both James Toliver and
Amanda (Mandy). I do not have information on JT's first wife. This census
reports that James and Mandy have been married 20 years. The date the family
has for the marriage is 1888, which would mean they have been married for 22
years, or depending on the month, 21 years at time of the 1910 census. The
death of Augustus West occurred at some unknown earlier date.

James Toliver's daughter Lizzie Leona is listed in the 1910 Stephens County,
Oklahoma, census as Lizza. The enumerator has many misspelling, even of
common names, on this page, which contains several family units of my Green or

Andy Gregory shows up as Anda Gregory. Dock looks like Dolf. Retta Green

Return to James Toliver GREEN

Notes for James Whitson GREEN

In the 1860 census, The census reports James Whitson Green was born about 1859
to Marvel Green and Ella M (Mary Ella Wood). marvel and Mary Ella married in
May 1854 in Roane County, East Tennessee.

1860 Federal Census, St Francois County, Missouri, 9 August, Outside of
Liberty, PO Farmington, page 107 (scan 137), Hse #673, Fam #676

Martha S Green 6 F born Indiana [b abt 1854]
James W Green 1 M born Missouri [b abt 1859]

It appears that James was Ella and Marvel's only child. Ella probably died
soon after. Marvel married Lucina/Lucinda in 1866. There is another child of
the same age reported in the household in the 1870 census, but not in 1860.
This child Laura may be the daughter of Marvel's thrid wife Lucina who had
been previously widowed two times. Laura would have been about 2 at the time
Lucina's first husband died. Perhaps Marvel adopted Laura, so her name became
Green.

A transcripton of the key facts from James' death record was available, but no
image.

JAMES GREEN OF WAVELAND BURIED TODAY

Death Came Suddenly Tuesday Morning at 3:15

James W. Green, well known farmer, who lived for more than three score years
and ten, in the Waveland neighborhood, died at this home there, Tuesday,
November 21, at 3:15 o'clock, a.m. from pulmonary tuberculosis.

Mr. Green's death came suddenly, because, although he had been in declining
health for more than a year, he had not been bedfast and was in Hillsboro,
only a few days before his death, he suffered from hemorrhages, and grew
gradually weaker, until death came a few hours after midnight, Monday.

Funeral Today

The funeral services were held this morning, at 10:30 o'clock, from the Bass
Funeral Home in Hillsboro, the Rev. T.G. Melton, pastor of the Hillsboro
Presbyterian church, officiating, and the services being under the auspices of
the Masonic Lodge of Hillsboro. Burial was made in Clear Springs cemetery,
where are buried a number of relatives of the deceased, for three generations.

Native of Missouri

James Whitson Green, a son of the late Marvel and Elizabeth (Dyer) Green, was
born in Hardin County, Missouri, December 30, 1859. At the time of his death
he was 73 years, 10 months and 21 days old. The parents of Mr. Green were
members of North Carolina families and after their marriage, they moved to
Kentucky and then to Missouri, their son, James Whitson Green, being born
during their short residence in the later state. They moved to Montgomery
County, Illinois, when he was still quite young, and he was reared and
educated in the Waveland neighborhood, which was his home, for the rest of his
life.

Mr. Green was married twice on April 2, 1879, he married Miss Emma Indiana
Montgomery, who was a resident of this vicinity. They bought eighty acres of
land, six miles south west of Hillsboro, which was one of the farms owned by
the late William H. Brewer, Hillsboro banker and merchant, where both lived
for the rest of their days. Three children were born to them, Tillie, who died
in infancy; Eva, the wife of Roy Davis, of Williamsfield, IL., and Irwin, a
farmer living at Manton, Alberta, Canada. Mrs. Green died on December 2, 1894,
fifteen years after their marriage.

On June 2, 1896, Mr. Green and Mrs. Eva Bailey Brown who was a resident of the
Waveland neighborhood, were united in marriage in Hillsboro. Six children were
born to them; August, who died in infancy; Lee, who lives at Pekin; Doris who
is at home with his parents; Ruth, the wife of Dwight Young, of near
Hillsboro; Elbert who is married and lives near Hillsboro, and twin daughter,
Miss Clara, who is at home and Miss Kathryn, who lives at Pekin and cares for
the home and children of her brother, Lee Green, who lost his wife a year ago.
Besides these relatives, Mr. Green leaves seventeen grandchildren; a
stepdaughter; Ruby, the wife of Roscoe Barry, of Collinsville; a stepson,
Ralph Brown who lives now at Rathdrum, Idaho, and one half-brother and two
half-sisters who do not reside in this vicinity. He was the last of his
immediate family to die, his parents, four brothers, and three sisters having
preceded him in death.

Two of brothers, the late Martin Green and the late Andrew Green, spent their
lives in Waveland vicinity, and will be remembered by many residents of the
county.

25 Years a School Director

Mr. Green was of the very highest type of farm residents of this county. He
was industrious and frugal and reared a large family supporting and caring for
them by the labor of his hand, on his own land; providing for them, by careful
management and never ceasing thought for their welfare.

He discharged his duties and responsibilities to his family and his community
admirably and generously. He served as a Director in the Mansfield school
district, for a quarter of a century, and was highway commissioner of
Hillsboro township for several terms. He became a member of the Hillsboro
Presbyterian church forty years ago, and retained his membership there until
his death. He was a faithful and regular attendant of church and Sunday
school, at the Waveland Presbyterian church in his home neighborhood, and was
always interested in affairs of the church and anxious to do his part, when
help was needed. He was a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge, and had been
a member of the Woodman for years, until recently. Mr. Green was the kind of
man whom family and friends hold in affectionate regard, and who always put
duty to others before their own desires. He filled a useful place in his
community and will be greatly missed.
