Notes for Jeremiah GREEN

Several undocumented genealogies of this family report that Henry and Alley's
son Jeremiah was born in 1833 and died in 1834. None of these genealogies has
any documentation or discussion, not mentioning where they got this
information. In the 1860 census there is a Jeremiah Green, with his wife Jane
enumerated near other members of this family, So it seems likely this is the
Jeremiah reported in virtually every genealogy as the son of Henry and Alley.

But we have another problem is the age and time of birth. Jeremiah is
generally agreed to have been born about 1833, and this is consistent with the
census entry in 1860, where Jeremiah is reported to be 27 years old.

If Alley is his mother and he was born in 1833, from her birth year in 1785,
Alley would have been 48 when he was born. This might be theoretically
possible, but how likely? It seems likely several generations of this Green
family are mixed here, or different people of the Green lineage with the same
names have been merged.

Allen's birth date on his Social Security records had the birth year as 1929.
But note that the year on his grave marker is 1930. The earlier date in
Social Security is the probably more reliable since that number came from
Allen himself. And there is a discrepancy in the date of death also. The SS
date is 15 April, but from his California death record and the gravestone
report the date of death as April 11. The 15th was likely the date of burial.
No obituary has been found.

-- Bobbi Foster, Geneanet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 12 June 2019

No entry for a child matching J B is found in the 1880 census for this family.
Two sons named James A and John A are reported as age 5 and 4 respectively.
The birth date of James A matches the birth date in 1875 given for J B on his
gravestone, as reported on Find a Grave.

Though it seems I have seen J B's name reported in some genealogy as Jessie,
it seems he corresponds with James A in the 1880 census. I have seen no other
report under the name of James. We should conclude at this point that the
enumerator wrote the wrong middle initial for James and it should be James B.
The name could be an enumerator error.

This child is reported, however, in some genealogies with he name of Jessie,
or as John or Johnnie A with the nickname of Jessie. I note also that the
birth dates on their separate memorials are the same date but one year apart
29 Nov 1875 for J B and 29 Nov 1876 for Johnnie A. Neither FAG memorial has a
reference to Jessie. James B is reported under the name Jessie B in the 1900
census with his wife Bertha I Green.

The birth date in 1875 fits with the age reported for James A Green in the
1880 census. The names of their wives are also suspiciously similar, with J
B's wife reported in her memorial as Bertha and Johnnie's wife as Latha L.
Their birth dates are also close together Bertha Green reported born 19 Feb
1878 and Latha L Green born 9 January 1877.

No death date is reported for Latha. Bertha is reported to have died 17 May
1917. No photos of the graves are provided, and I have not seen a separate
burial list for Nectar Cemetery.

Other records have the name Jesse (the normal spelling for a man). It could
be that the enumerator made an error in writing his name as James instead of
Jessie. His WW! registration has his name as Jesse Barta, and hsi signature
appears to be this full nmae. Some genealiges have his name as Jesse Barto.

Later, when the birth certificate was found, it was discovered that the birth
certificate says 21 March 1906. But there are some minor errors on the
certificate. Her father is reported as James B Green instead of James D
Green, and her mother was reported as E R Green, instead of E A Green. In the
latter case, it is likely the scribe/clerk heard her name as Eliza Rilla
instead of Eliza Arilla.

I found several genealogies of different families that reported John, and gave
his year of birth, but none had any further information. None of these gave
any documentation so I had no basis to make a determination or clues to follow
for further research. I consulted Doug Green, James Moore Green's grandson,

John and his birth year are reported by a descendant of John's sister Fannie
(Frances Ann).

"The (M) stands for Mary. I have my great grandmother's supplemental
application. Her name was Fannie Bryant Bruce. Her father was Hardy Bryant.
Hardy's mom was Fannie Green, daughter of Daniel Green & Mary Green. There
was the name Mashack in the old Green Bible, said William Bryant, brother of
Hardy Bryant. They were rejected on their Cherokee blood, but I know they
were Cherokee. Fannie Green was born in 1808, had a brother Isaac 1801, John

Missouri is now apparently going by her middle name, Gertrude. Note the
spelling of John's wife's name in 1920, Margarite. (The writing might have
meant to spell it Marguerite, the standard form. But the E is missing.) This
could be the proper form of her name, since in 1910, it was spelled Margarete,
representing the same pronunciation.

Living next door is John and Margarete's son Frederick. He has a daughter
named after his mother. Her name appears to be written Marguite, which likely
meant Marguerite.

Notes for John GREEN

Most genealogies consider John's mother to be Lucretia Franklin. The Shoemaker
genealogy, and perhaps others, reports a second wife of Meshack as his mother,
Mary Polly Wiseman. However, this conflicts with the report in Meshack's will
in 1800 that his surviving wife is Lucretia (Creasy).

Compilations on this generation of Greens are mostly confused and several
generations seem compressed into one, and more than one line combined in
different ways in different sources. Very difficult to sort out.

This line of Greens is attested at various levels as being Cherokee or part
Cherokee. Some report it in the Green line of Meshack, and others report that
Lucretia's Franklin line were Cherokee. A prominent Green branch is Gardner
Green, who appears to be from this same Green lineage. They claim to be fully
Cherokee, but moved north to the Midwest. This lineage was online for a while
but has since disappeared.

Some of that information on this Gardner Green Cherokee family is found in
discussion lists on Ancestry.com.

"I am a descendant of Lucressa and Adam Campbell. Cressa is what some call
her. Her father was John Green from the Carolina's. She was of Native
heritage, but I am not sure how much. Adam and Lucressa settled in Jasper
Alabama and owned land near Smith Lake. This was before the Civil War. They
had at least two sons who fought for the Union Army. They both died of
sickness during the war. Adam and Lucressa were common law husband and wife
because she was considered a woman of color by law, due to her Native
heritage. I understand that John Green's father was a Meshach, but have no
evidence. Lucressa and Adam are both buried near Smith Lake."
-- P J Martin, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 12 May 2014

A researcher cousin named Sheri Horton reported to me in May 2014 that she had
found the Missouri Cherokee registration cards for persons in this line, in
which both Meshack W Green and Lucretia Franklin were reported as fullbood
Cherokee. But multiple requests to Sheri for a copy of the document or
documents with wording relating to this have been unfrutiful.

"I just got my card from the Northern Cherokee Nation for proving John Horton,
wife Nancy Anne Green daughter of Meshack Green(e) . I found therm on the
Emmigration rolls of 1817-1835 That Meshack, Creasy, and Nancy Anne were full
Cherokee! ... They are recognised by the state of Missouri and are working on
Federal recognition."
-- Sheri Horton, Ancestry Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 May 2014

There are several lines of Greens in the Carolinas and Georgia. Some have
this John Green connected to my Green line, a son of Meshack and Lucretia
Green, thought to be of full or part Cherokee descent. He may be a brother to
my direct ancestor Daniel John Green. Some sources give the same death date
for John as others give for Daniel John. They may be the same person, but
other details of children do not match.

In some genealogies, these two persons are combined under the name of either
John Green, Daniel Green or Daniel John Green, with mixed details that seem to
me to come from three different Green lineages! No notes or explanations are
found in any of these confusing genealogies. I have had some direct contact
from some individuals in these genealogies who provided some few family
details on one or two individuals in their line. All my sources are fully
documented here.

A deed in 1825 granted land to Lucinda Green, daughter of John Green. The
document identifies Lucresa as Lucinda Green. It does not mention
Lucinda/Lucresa's husband Adam Campbell, but the land includes the Adam
Campbell gold Mine.

A second deed dated 17 December 1829 basically repeats this same grant with
slghtly different wording. The notable addition in 1829 identified both as
"of heathen blood," meaning of Indian heritage.

One or two had identified this John Green with another unrelated line of
Greens in north Carolina. Members of that prominent Green family in
Rutherford County, South Carolina, are of European background, and are also
reported in this genealogy, associated with the McSwains, Bridges, Padgetts,
Moores and Washburns from prerevolutionary times. Many of these Carolina
families, however, intermarried with the Cherokee, the populous indigenous
people of the Carolina area.

-- Ancestry Trees, Jess Headley,

Some genealogies have information on Charlotte as Charlotte Brown, with a
nickname Lottie reported by some. But I have found no parents for her. (One
confused genealogy has parents named Green for her, though her surname is
Brown.) More likely it should be Charlotte Green, with parents named Green.
She appears to be the Charlotte Green in another line of Greens for whom we
have found no connection to Meshack's family. That Charlotte Green was the
daughter of William Marion Green and Drucilla McBrayer of Rutherford County,
North Carolina.

"Charlotte had a daughter named Lucretia aka Lucressa aka Lucinda, aka Cressy.
She married a man named Adam Campbell. They are buried on property off of
Lake Smith Dam Road in Walker County Alabama. Lucretia is my GG Grandmother."
-- Clint Norwood, note on the genealogy site, 1 July 2011

More genealogies have gradually come out providing reasonable details that
seem to reflect family sources, though they do not provide documentation. The
following one provides the maiden name of John's wife Charlotte. Another
indicates her nickname was Lottie, a common nickname for Charlotte. This also
provides a middle name for their daughter Lucinda, which makes her named after
John's mother Lucretia. The name on Lucinda's gravestone is spelled Lucresa.

Rocky River was the name of an old settlement on the railroad in Pendleton
District, South Carolina. The area is now in Anderson County, one of the
several divisions of old Pendleton in the 1800s. Rocky River community was
near the Rocky River, a few miles south of the city of Anderson.

The data of death here is the same as for a Daniel John Green, reported by
many genealogies as a son of this same Meshack and Lucretia. It had seemed
odd before that there was a Daniel John and John who were brothers, though
many families in this era reused the same names for two of their children.
However, reported wives and children of John Green and Daniel John Green were
different. Both are reported to have had a son named John, both born about
1800. Otherwise there is no similarity to reported children for the two.

But there is one genealogy that has the same family information for John Green
as above, but the man's name there is Daniel John. Most of these genealogies
have incomplete families, so the family configurations are not definitive. I
do think the same death date indicates perhaps a confusion of two persons or a
confusion in the naming. I may have misinterpolated information from these
spotty sources, as may have some of the other more complete genealogies I have
more recently found and drawn upon!

Notes for John GREEN

The reported children of John Green (b about 1799) occurred before his marriage
to Ann Linebaugh in 1841. Some report and earlier marriage to an Ann Tipton,
which could account for the middle name of John's son Isaac Tipton Green, born
in about 1825 (or 1829 according to his reported age on his Confederate
military records). Buit some report the same marriage date in 1841 for Ann
Tipton as for Ann LInebaugh.

There had to be an earlier marriage about 1820 or 1821, for the marriage that
produced the known children born in the 1820s. This firs wife was probably
Mary Tipton as reported by one or two genealogies, but unfortunately with no
records for documentatoin.

One proposed marriage is the marriage of one John Green to an Amy Goodin in
Tennessee on 9 August 1809. This also matches the reported birth of first son
Elisha in Tennessee in about 1821. Records from this era are spotty, and
genealogies have many errors and lots of data fields empty. Some have Amy
Goodin's name associated with the marriage record for John and Ann Linebaugh
in 1841.

A problem with this proposal for our John Green, is that in the marriage year
1809, John would have been about 10 years old!

Marriage 25 February 1841 Platte County, Missouri

Two transcriptions of this record in two different collections on Ancestry
have incorrect dates, one recording the marriage date as 10 January 1841 and
the other as 28 February 1841.

With the marriage in 1841 to Ann Linebaugh, John was surely married earlier to
a first wife. Two or three genealogies report that John Green married Amy
Goodin, and one proposes her maiden name was Tipton (making her the mother of
Isaac Tipton Green, instead of Ann Linebaugh). This would mean that both were
about 21 or 22 when they married in about 1920 or 1921. Their first son,
Elisha was born about 1822.

I found a burial record for one John Green, Son of Patrick and Margaret Green,
who died and was buried in St Louis. But the burial date for that John Green
was 6 April 1851, so must be from a different family. No genealogy I have
seen has the parents of John Green, father of Isaac Tipton Green.

Notes for John GREEN

-----------------------
Gardner Green's father was John Green, born in Virginia. These Greens are
related to Henry Green, who died 1845 Halifax, Virginia. I believe Henry
Green to be connected to Thomas Green who was the son of a sea captain and an
Indian bride. They married into the Sizemore family prior to migrating to
South Carolina.

Supposedly the Sizemores and Greens were Native American. I'm not sure if
they were Cherokee or Nottoway. There's a document signed 1611 by Thomas
Green, Queen Betty, Nicolas Majors, Peter the Great and one other person I
forget his name. The document was disputing the boundaries between North
Carolina and Virginia. The settlers decided to ask the Indians to testify
because they knew the land, the rivers and the region better than any white
man.

They were all Native American tribes from the northern Neck of Virginia.
Queen Bettie was the ruler of all five tribes. She was Pamunkey Indian from
the Powhatan tribes. Queen Betty was also the mother of the infamous
Pocahontas that married John Smith.
