-- Find A Grave Memorial #24276858,

One or more genealogies report that the middle initial L in Lydia's name is
Lovenia. They provide no documentation and none has been found in public
records. Her name appears in various forms, including Lydia, Liddie, Lydda.

1870 Federal Census, Blount County, Alabama, 26 August, Township 12, PO
Blountsville, page 1, Hse/Fam #1
Green, John 26 M W Farmer $100 Real Estate $300 Personal GA
Green, Mary 28 F W Keeps House born GA Cannot read or write
Green, Frances 4 F W born Georgia
Green, Lyda 3 F W born Georgia
Green, Elizabeth 3mos F W born Alabama

Going by the birth place and ages of these children, the famliy moved to
Alabama between abotu 1867 and 1870. If the age of Elisabeth is correct and
they figured correctly from the census date of 1 June, then Elizabeth was born
in January 1870.

Elizabeth does not appear in the 1880 census. It is likely Elizabeth died
before the 1870 census. The 1900 census reports that Mary had 10 children and
only 9 are living.

I note that the 1880 census reports that Liddie L was born in Georgia, which
matches the similar record for Lyda in 1870. A discrepancy is the age occurs
here. Ages are often wrong. We have learned thorugh long experience with
these old records an cultural study that people in this era were not focused
on numbers and ages and dates as absolute matters of truth in the modern
analytical database sense. It is likely that this Liddie L is more than 10
years old in 1880, and the round figure 10 was used.

I have found several genealogies that appear to copy each other with no
documentation except the 1880 census, that report Elizabeth Liddie L Green as
a child of John Thomas and Mary Rebecca. They appear to have conflated these
1870 and 1880 census reports due to the age discrepancy and have overlooked
the birth state.

Interestingly, these genealogies also report Elizabeth Liddie L Green's birth
date as 11 Mar 1868, in Blount County, Alabama. This is between the 1870 ages
for Lyda and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is reported in 1870 as only 3 months old.
It does not seem likely that her parents would have reported a 2-year-old as 3
months old. And Lyda is reported as 3 years old, which would make her born in
1867 or even possibly 1866. We have ofund also that birth dates get transpose
din family memory, or even incorrectly engraved on gravestones, which are
notoriously difficult to correct, and often peple do not notice.

Note that Coley and Mattie's first three sons were born in Arkansas, then the
last two in Louisiana, and now they are back in Arkansas since the birth of
Arch just 4 months before. Hempstead County, Arkansas, borders Bossier
Parish, Louisiana, on the north. Hope is the Hempstead county seat.

Columbus' and James' mother is reported born in Indiana, indicating that
Mattie is Coley's second wife. John, Benjamin and Arch are Mattie's sons.
This corresponds to the difference in Coley and Mattie's ages. This is
further corroborated by the corrected error in Coley's record for the number
of years married.

The enumerator first entered 19 years married (married in abt 1881), matching
the first marriage, then corrected it to 13 years (married in abt 1887),
matching Mattie's record. Columbus' birth date is reported as Dec 1881, which
would match a first marriage for Coley in early 1881 or late 1880.

Since John was also reported born in Arkansas, but in Sept 1889, this fits
with a marriage in 1887. Their actual marriage record says it was in October
1896. Birth states of the children also indicates they they lived on the
Arkansas side of the border. Note also that it is reported that in that
10-year period Mattie has had 6 children, but only 3 are living. This is
consistent with the gap between the marriage and the birth of the first
reported child, John, in Sept 1889. The first child was born before John, but
died before this 1900 census.

Various genealogies report they moved to McCurtain County, Oklahoma.

Their daughter Nellie's Social Security confirms this, reporting her born in
Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in October 1910.

The 1910 census reports them resident in McCurtian County, Oklahoma, just
across the border with Arkansas. Their youngest child Sallie is reported 3
years old, so born about 1906 or early 1907. So they were in Oklahoma by 1905
or 1906.

This family has not been found in the 1920 census. We know Mattie died before
the 1930 census. In 1930, Coley is reproted as a widower, and has two
children remaining in his household, Nellie, age 19, and Dewey, age 17. These
appear to be the last children. At the 1930 ages, Nellie was born abotut 1911
and Dewey about 1913. Going by Dewey's age, we know Mattie lived until about
1913.

Notes for Marvel Lindsey GREEN

"I am William L Green (Bill) and 85 years of age. Marvel Lindsey Green (1814),
son of Shadrack and Martha Jones is my great, great, great grandfather. I
have done rather a good bit of research on my ancestors recently and have most
all info on Marvel's son's family (Andrew Jackson Green), and Marvel Linzy
Green Andrew's son and family. ... and was acquainted with many of the
extended family who are now buried in Sunnyside Cemetery Sorento IL. My
father was Lloyd Lionel Green Sr (1899), the only child of Marvel Linzy and
Mary Margaret (Kelly) Green."
-- Bill Green, email communication to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 5 June 2014

In the 1850 census, Marvel's wife is named Ann M. In 1860 it is Ella M. In
1870 it is Louisa.

A marriage record for Marvel with Elizabeth Dicus in North Carolina. A
memorial for one of Marvel's sons, James Whitson Green, on Find a Grave
reports his mother was Mary Ella Woods. This would match the name Ella M for
Marvel's wife in 1860. James was born 30 December 1859. This would mean that
Elizabeth died some time in late 1858 or early 1859. One genealogy reports
that James was the only child Marvel had with Ella.

Marvel's memorial on Find a Grave reports that Lucina, buried with him, is his
third wife. But the name Ann M in 1850 gives us four names. Maybe the name
this is only an enumerator error for Ella M.

In light of the marriage record and later censuses, it appears that Marvel's
wife Ann M Green is actually Elizabeth Dycus/Dicus Green, as named in the
marriage record in 1833. The name in the 1860 census seems to also be her,
but is different again, Ella M. The name Ella could be a nickname from
Elizabeth. It is uncertain, but I have no other information that indicates
that Marvel was married again before 1850.

In the 1860 census, Marvel wife was reported as Ella M. We know Marvel's
first wife was Elizabeth Dicus (or Dyer, according to some sources). Marvel
married Ella Mary (or Mary Ella) Wood in May 1854. Elizabeth's last child
Martha was born in late 1853 or early 1854, according to her age in the 1860
census. This means that Elizabeth died in early 1854 or possibly late 1853.

Marvel married Mary Ella in East Tennessee, in Roane County. But their son
James Whitson Green was born in Missouri in December 1859 (according to his
death record, though he was reported as 1 years old in the August 1860 census
enumeration).

Ella probably died soon after. Marvel married Lucina/Lucinda in 1866. The
name on the 1866 marriage record is Louise Felkel. All other factors indicate
this is the same individual named Lucina or Lucinda in other records. Several
genealogies report only two wives, and have the name of Marvel's second wife
as Lucinda. But it is Lucina on her first marriage license and the 1880
census. His memorial on Find a Grave refers to Lucinda (or Lucina) as
Marvel's 3rd wife.

be Louise, or Louisa, the name under which Marvel's wife is listed in the 1870
census, This fits with the person normally named Lucinda in family sources.
In the 1880 census, his widow is enumerated as Lucina Green.

There is a recurrence of family lore reporting that this line of Greens were
part Cherokee. I have not run into that very prominently, and it could be
from marriage partners in various generations rather than in the Green
lineage. No connection has been found between this line of Greens and the
line of Meshack W Green and Lucretia Franklin.

--------------------
My dad, who descended from Marvel Green's granddaughter Hattie, always told us
that we were part Cherokee. We've been trying for years to figure out how we
were and we focused on Hatti's husband's family. Coincidentally, his name was
also Sparks. It actually may not be a coincidence because I find that the
families to which I am related seemed to travel west together in groups.

Years ago, I was in contact with a woman who also descended from Marvel Green,
through another of his children. She had her DNA analyzed and it showed she
had Native American ancestry. However, she attributed it to another line of
her ancestry, although she also was told that her grandmother, one of Marvel's
daughters, was part Cherokee.

It seems to me, if memory serves, that this woman was related to a Dicey
Green, who married a William Bandy. Also, if memory serves, somewhere among
the records at Fold3, related to the Sparks family members who were trying to
get listed as tribal members, there was a mention of Dicey Green and someone
named Bandy.

The 1910 census, taken in April, reports Marvel as 38 years old. His birth
date is in June, thus this tells us his birth year was 1871, matching the year
date reported on his gravestone. His age of 8 reported in the 1880 census,
with census date 1 June, matches 1871, indicating his birth date for the
census year had not yet occurred. If he had been born on 23 June 1872, his age

consistent with the date of birth reported on the gravestone.

"Spent this last week in Highland, Sorento and Pocahontas IL with wife's

Betty to stop and back up -- and I joined the 3. They did remember some of my
