According to a marriage record, Mary Greene and her sister Ally were born before the marriage of their father Ambrose to his long-time wife Nancy Watson in 1845. In the 1850 census where they appear, Ambrose's wife is Lavina, which may be a second name for Nancy. This means Nancy (Lavina) was not their mother, since both were born before 1845. 1850 Federal Census, DeKalb County, Alabama, 17 December, Division 25, p 737 (scan 368), Hse/Fam #581 A Greene 31 M Farmer $no value stated for Real Estate b South Carolina [born abt 1819] Lavina Greene 23 F Georgia Cannot read or write [born abt 1827] Mary Greene 10 F Alabama [born abt 1840]

You will note that Bill reported Bertha died as an infant. I wonder if it was the other way around. The date also is too late for the one born in 1893 to be Rebecca's child. There is a Mary Green, who also appears to be a sister of Meshack and Lucretia, who was enumerated as head of her household, next door to Thomas, who matches the age for the son of Meshack and Lucretia. This Mary was reported as age 26 or under. Based on this, Mary would have been born about 1794 or 1795. Henry Greene, who matches Thomas' brother Henry, is living next door to Thomas. It is possible that Meshack's daughter Mary Ann was the daughter of his first wife (Mary Ann was born before the date of Meshack's marriage to Lucretia Franklin), and then Meshack and Lucretia also named their last child Mary. This happened a lot in that era. No birth date is found in records for Mary, who may be the youngest child of Meshack and Lucretia Greene. This may also be the young widow of another Greene man. I cannot match her with any brother of Thomas and Henry. 1820 Federal Census, Pendleton District, South Carolina, Enumeration Date 7 August 1820 (no date on page), p 37 Mary Greene Free White Persons Males - Under 10: 3 Males - 10 thru 16: 1 Females - 10 thru 26: 1 Total Free White Persons:5 No Slaves, Colored

One source gives the birth date of 1767 for Mary Ann, but at this date her mother would be only 12 years old, if we go by the date for Lucretia Franklin's birth. This is only one of the conflicts that we find in the dates among various sources and even in the same source in the Green family line. A descendant of Meshack, Barbara Bell, informs me that Mary Anne is the first daughter, and was born in North Carolina. But I do not have a date of birth. Sheri Horton, a descendant tells us more: "Issac Horton, bro of Jonathan, married Nancy's sister Mary Anne and they moved to Gwinnett Co GA " -- Sheri Horton, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 20 October 2010 Mary Ann Green Birth 1762 in Bucks, Pennsylvania Death 1850 in Gwinnett, Georgia Parents: Meshack W Greene 1720 - 1793 Lucretia Franklin 1725 - 1800 Marriage 1785 to Isaac Horton Surry, North Carolina -- Gillespie Parham, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/101404/person/-2011394188 I have found a Mary Ann and Isaac Horton, among other Hortons in Gwinnett County, Georgia, in the 1850 census. This location matches information on Isaac Horton, son of Abraham and Sarah Horton, who moved from North Carolina to Gwinnett County. But the age is about 10 years earlier than family sources and most genealogies show. Isaac's age in the 1850 census is 96, making him born in about 1754, while sources normally report his birth as about 1763. Reported birth in Pennsylvania matches the son of Abraham and Martha, so this is probably the right person, despite the difference in ages, which are notoriously varying in sources of this era. The age for Mary Ann could be the right Mary Ann. She is 88, making her birth year about 1762. This might work out for the family of Meshack and Lucretia Green, except the year of birth commonly reported for Lucretia is 1750, which would make her only 12 at most in 1962. So we can allow a little for the uncertainty of ages. It could be that Mary Ann Green who married Isaac Horton, son of Abraham, is a different Mary Ann Green from the daughter of Meshack and Lucretia. And due to the difference in age for Isaac, this could be a different Isaac Horton than Abraham and Sarah's son. We don't have a lot of sources with overlapping information for triangulation on these individuals. 1850 Federal Census, Gwinnett County, Georgia, 25 September, page 380, Hse/Fam #935 Isaac Horton 96 M R T (Retired?) Only a name for Mary was known by Green family tradition. They knew she had married someone named Peacock, but no other details. A genealogy of the Mumford-Murratti lineage seems to represent this Mary, married to a John Timothy Peacock. The genealogy reports her full name as Mary Malissie Green, and her birthplace as Palo Pinto County. Palo Pinto is three counties northwest of Hill County, where her older brother Toliver Jorile was born, as well as the next two children Susie and James after her. Their cousin James Toliver Jackson was also born in Hill County. Why the family moved to Palo Pinto for a while is unknown. But the genealogy does not report Mary's parents, so the identification with our Mary is weak, but matches the general parameters. Mary Malissie Green Birth 1871 in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, Texas Death in Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma Parents Unknown Married 28 June 1891 to John Timothy Peacock Birth 1872 Death in Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma Burial Lone Wolf, Adair County, Oklahoma Children: One Living John Franklin Peacock 1892-1954 Thomas Jefferson Peacock 1895-1973 Arthur Lloyd Peacock 1898-1983 James Henry Peacock 1903 - Lily Mae Peacock 1906- Mamy Lalissie Peacock 1906- William Timothy "Bill" Peacock 1908- -- Mumford-Murratti, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/139863661/person/33651337 The birth in Palo Pinto County matches the presence of the Green family in North Texas, and Mary's brother Toliver Jorile was born a couple of counties farther south in Hill County, where Greens, Barnetts and related Jacksons. Members of these related clans are found all across North Texas in the period from 1860 on. Some of all these families migrated north into Indian Territory. Censuses of Mary and John T Peacock cited by the Mumford genealogy place them in places consistent with locations of other members of the Green and related families. These censuses have the children reported by the Mumford genealogy. But these censuses report Mary as born in Arkansas, not Texas. Further one census reports Mary's parents born in Missouri, another Arkansas, not Georgia and Tennessee. One says they were both born in Georgia. The following one has a date for her death as well as the place which several report. No documentary source is cited. Note that this genealogy agrees with the date of birth reported by some other family sources, but the location is Indian Territory rather than Palo Pinto County, Texas. Most genealogies have no date of birth and most have no place. Joe's daughter Alpharetta Mae Green Gregory told Loretta that her father Joe commented at the death of his mother "I have neither mother nor sister." His mother died in 1907. This would seem to indicate that both Joe's sisters (Mary and Suzie) died before their mother. -- Loretta Gregory Gay, personal communication, 18 February 2013 This would seem to conflict with Mary Green Peacock's family information and documented death in 1950. But perhaps what Joe meant was that both his sisters had married and moved away. The Peacocks lived in Texas at the time of Clarinda Barnett Green's death. Otherwise, I cannot account for Joe's comment as it has come down to us in the Green-Gregory family. I have found no information on the death or marriage of Suzie Green, other than that she married George Clifton, on whom I have no details. There is also a story in the family, again told to Loretta Gregory by her mother Alpharetta Green Gregory. One of Joe Green's sisters woke up one morning to find her baby dead, went to find and tell a neighbor, returned to her home, "took to her bed and died." No further details survive to help us identify which sister or a time frame. -- Loretta Gregory Gay, personal communication, 18 February 2013
