Notes for Shadrack GREEN

Various sources spell the name of this person as Shadrack, Shaddrock or
Shadrick Green. Several genealogies report that Shadrack was a Primitive
Baptist preacher. He is listed in several by his title Elder Shadrack Green.

Name Shadrack Green

The 1860 census of what appears to be this same family is found in the same
county. But there are discrepancies in the children, with some age and name
differences and the child Martha matches most closely the child enumerated as
Mathew in 1850.

The sons Mathew C and Joseph C of 1850 are not named in 1860, but there is
12-year-old Jasper whose age puts his birth between the dates of Mathew and
Joseph. Joseph is in the same order though with a different age form Jasper
of 1850. He could be named Joseph Jasper.

The last child recorded in 1850 as S W D is now reported as Sampson.
Sampson's age in 1860 must be wrong, since he is reported to be 11 years old,
the same as his sister, Lavina, but in 1850 he was almost 2 years younger than
Lavina. He should probably be 10 in 1860. Going by the 1850 census, he was
born in about June 1850. In 1870 Sampson is reported as 20 years old,
matching his reported birth date in 1850

Return to Shadrack GREEN

Notes for Shadrack GREEN

Parentage of this Shadrack is somewhat uncertain, as with this whole line in
the 1700s. Sources have them organized quite differently. The source cited
here for Shaddrock (aka Shadrack) Green fits well in the generational
sequence, and eases the problem other sources had with the long impossible
time ranges. A problem in several of these persons is the matching of
spouses, marriage dates, birth dates and dates of birth for the children.

It is possible this Shadrick had more than one wife. Some of the uncertainty
is in different dates for what appears to be the same wife, reported as Rachel
Smith, or Rachel with Unknown Last Name. Two birth dates range from 1750 to
1758 for Rachel's married to Shadrick Green (b 1747).

Our Shadrack Green born in 1760 seems to be a son of this Shadrick/Shadrack.
But the birth date of 1747 for Shadrick is too close to 1760 for him to
reasonably be the father. If he was born in 1747, he would be only 13 years
old when Shadrack was born in 1760.

The dates of birth and death for Shadrick are convincingly exact. However, a
more realistic date is provided by another source, which has very few details,
and thus does not carry the sense of authority I would prefer. The person is
listed there as Shaddrock Green with a birth date of 1730. The World Family
Tree genealogy #3554 which reports this Shaddrock has no name or info on a
wife of Shaddrock.

A daughter reported by this genealogy is also reported by one genealogy in the
One World Tree collection that reports the Shadrick Green born in 1747. Dicey
Green, born in 1770 according to WFT #3554 is born 1775 in OWT. Shadrack
Green born 1760 is also reported as a child in OWT.

The birth date of 1730 would accommodate the age problem between these two
generations. The inexact birth date of 1730 would not normally be a better
alternative than the more exact date given in One World Tree. But the age
spacing is more reasonable. The early birth in 1830, however, presents a
problem related to the birth of the widely-reported father of Shadrack, Isaac
Green, in 1721, and marriage to Rebecca in 1741.

World Family Tree Vol. 13, Pedigree #3554. reports only the year 1830 as
Shadrack's birth date, which is only 11 years after most sources report the
birth of his father Isaac Green. Other genealogies and indications make it
more like 1847, with his brother Isaac born in Sept 1742. But Shadrack and
Isaac's father Isaac in his will refers to Shadrack as his eldest son. If
Shadrack's parents married in 1741 as reported, then it was Shadrack he and
not his brother Isaac that was born in Sept 1742.

OWT reports Shadrick born in Baltimore, while WFT reports Shaddrock with no
birth place. The birth place of the daughter Dicey they both report differs:
OWT says Burke County, North Carolina, while WFT says Albemarle County,
Virginia. These two counties are not to far apart considering the migratory
nature of the culture at that time.

People were moving south from Pennsylvania or Maryland through Virginia into
North Carolina, and in the same or next generation on west. Places and dates
vary considerably on the known same person, so this could be the same
individual.

There is likely more information that we are missing at this stage to make
sense out of all these names and close bit different dates and wide range of
geography. But there are a lot of Shadracks, Shaddrocks, Shadricks and
similar Greens in several states. It is possible that one of these is a son
of a related uncle or cousin. It is frustrating that most genealogies don't
tell you where they got the information and why they have settled on a
particular date, spelling of a name or particular place name as a birth place
or death place.

One problem is that most of these Greens are reported only as secondary
persons in another family's line, so only one child of one generation who
married someone in a another family is reported by different ones. So there
are bits of information missing.
Return to Shadrack GREEN

Notes for Shadrack L GREEN

According to a genealogy handed down in the Green line from Glenda Pool,
William Green had three sons named after the three Hebrew boys of the Old
Testament book of Daniel: Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego (which he spelled
Abednigo), plus a fourth son Thomas that sources tell us about. Several
genealogies indicate that the middle initial was L for the first Shadrack, his
son and his grandson, but it not clear what the L was for.

The sources from Glenda Pool give the birth date of 1800 for a Shadrack Green.
But this could not be the son of William, who was born in about 1700, going by
the birth date of 1720 for his son Meshack. This appears to be a son of
Shadrack, brother of Meshack Green.

Glenda Pool does report a Shadrack Green, Jr, son of Shadrack son of William.
Dates, however, are confused with the later Shadracks. Shadrack Jr, born in
1855, would be the son of the Shadrack born in 1800. She has Shadrack son of
William born in 1800 but no death date. For Shadrack, Jr, grandson of William
there is no date of birth and a death date of 1846. These dates match other
sources' dates for the Shadrack Green son of William.

The year 1846 is the date a World Family Tree source (Vol 146, Pedigree 36)
gives as the date of death for the Shadrack Green born in 1760. This could
then be the father of Shadrack Green born in 1800. A One World Tree source
tells us this Shadrack Green had a son named Shadrack L Green in 1855 (among
many other children) and died 13 May 1864. The latter source has no father
for this Shadrack. The death in 1864 is reported to be in Georgia. His
military gravesite information appears at the end of this discussion.

Researcher Martha McConnell comments:
One source gives the name of Shadrack Sr's wife as Martha Jones, while another
says it was Mary Gage. What I discovered is that his mother was Mary Cage,
but Martha Jones was his stepmother. The lists of children from the two
sources are very similar. But one source has no Shadrack, Jr. More
investigation needs to be done in other sources to clarify the family
configuration and dating for William, his children and grandchildren.

The only wife that I have for Shadrack b 1800 is Benisa Ann Owens. In 1860
Shadrack's wife is enumerated as Maniza, which is phonetically close to
Benisa. But the age is also wrong for Benisa, reporting 30 when normally her
age reflects birth in about 1818. Note that the first child William is
reported as 17, which would mean if really born in 1830, this Maniza was only
13 at the time of William's birth.

Vague family sources report a daughter Emily born in 1840 and Polly (probably
Mary) born in 1841. These could be the daughter of Benisa if born in 1818,
but not of a woman born in 1830 (as reported for "Maniza"). But Benisa Ann is
still with her children in the 1870 census (under the name Ann) and reported
as age 38 (born 1832).

Perhaps this age for "Maniza" in 1860 and for Ann in 1870 indicates that
Shadrack had a wife before Benisa Ann who died after the birth of the first
two daughters. No genealogy I have seen accounts for these facts.
Shardrack's reported age in 1860 makes him borni n 1809, while the correct
year seems to be 1800. A memorial on Find a Grave, established only in 2012,
does report that Shadrack was married twice, and married "Manisa" on 5 April
1855. That means that Shadrack L Jr was Benisa's first child.

Since there are actually three Shadrack Greens, the use of Sr and Jr titles is
unclear and confusing. Sources that have only the elder and his son tend to
refer to them as Sr and Jr, but they either have no third Shadrack or confuse
the dates so it appears there are only two. Those sources that have two, born
in 1800 and 1855, call these Sr and Jr. Several sources have the middle
initial L for one or more of these three.

World Family Tree Pedigree #2738 (anonymous in the fashion of Genealogy.com)
calls the Shadrack born in 1855 Shadrack L Jr. This is the only indication of
a middle initial. No other source I have seen has a middle initial. But this
source does not have an initial for his father Shadrack. His father should be
called Shadrack L Sr, if his son is really Jr. I have included the middle
initial on Shadrack 3, which will help differentiate them but have not used
the Jr title.

Another World Family Tree genealogy, Pedigree #3554, reports a Shaddrock Green
Sr, born 1730. This date would fit a son of William Green. Meshack was born
in 1720. One child of Shaddrock is also reported, a daughter named Dicey,
born in 1770. This name Dicey, nickname for Dicea or Eudicea, is the name of
a son of the Shadrack other sources report born in 1760. A problem is that
Dicey's birthplace is reported as Albemarle County, Virginia, not South
Carolina.

A possible match for Shadrack 2 (b 1800) in Forsyth, Georgia, 1870, shows
wife's name as Nancy J (Green). But this is after the death date of Shadrack
who married Benisa Owens. Benisa's husband died in 1864 in the Civil War, and
was buried in Gwinnett County, where we find Shadrack and Benisa living, and
Benisa later as a widow. (See end of these Notes.)

The old One World Tree source for Shadrack Green (b 1800 d 1864) reports his
wife as Benisa Ann Owens. Thus the Shadrack in Forsyth County, Georgia, in
1870 has to be a different Shadrack Green. Martha McConnell told me there
were two Shadrack Greens born about the same time in South Carolina, but she
gives no details of their residences, except that one was in Forsyth County.
The Shadrack Green in Forsyth was born about the same time, and was married to
Nancy J Parker.

The Shadrack we follow here was in Gwinnett County, Georgia with his wife
Benisa Ann Owens. Shadrack L and Benisa Green were recorded in the 1860
census. In the 1870 census, after Shadrack died in 1864, Benisa Ann is found
with her children in the home of 22-year old Levy Hay. I have not determined
if there is any relation to Levy.

"There were two Shadrack Greens both born in SC a few months apart. 1st
Shadrack was in Forsyth Co., Ga by 1840 and remained there until his death in
1881. He married Nancy J. Parker also of SC. The other Shadrack was married
to Benisa Ann Owens and died during Civil War (1864) buried in Gwinnett Co.,
GA."
-- Note on genealogy website, 16 October 2010

We have documentation that Shadrack married to Benisa Ann died in the civil
was and was buried in Gwinnett County in 1864. Shadrack who married Nancy
Parker is in the 1890 census in Forsyth County. There are Greens nearby in
Forsyth County in the 1850 census, when this Shadrack and Nancy are enumerated
there. So both these Shadracks may be kin somehow in this same Green lineage.
No source gives enough information to fully compare these two, or to sort
these out or establish the parentage and relationships of the Shadrack who
married Nancy.

In 1870 Shadrack married to Nancy is 70 years old, which matches our other
details, and wife Nancy J is 60. Other sources have also considered this the
same Shadrack, but I have seen no genealogy discuss the problem of the many
Shadracks, or names of the wives and other details. See Martha McConnell's
comment above which does confirm two different Shadracks with different wives
of these names, but again with no details to clarify the lineages and
parentage.

In 1870 Nancy is age 21, son Joseph is 178 and daughter Georgia is 13. The
genealogies that have this family have some children that I have not found in
the census reports. This may indicate that the family in the censuses I have
seen, also cited by other genealogies, is not the same Shadrack Green. If
there are two different Shadracks, one married to Benisa Ann Owens and another
to Nancy J Parker, it appears several genealogies have mixed or combined the
children from two marriages under one wife.

In the 1850 census, also in Forsyth County, Georgia, the family is found, with
several children, but the difference in ages of Shadrack and Nancy are
greater: Shadrack (named Shedrick here) is 50, which matches, but Nancy is
36, a difference of 4 years. Otherwise, it appears to be the same family.
There is only one child who overlaps on both these censuses. Nancy is 1 in
1850, and is the only one still at home at age 21 in 1870, which matches
perfectly. Note that this husband is 14 years older than the wife.

Only two of these children match those found in genealogies of this family,
though all the genealogies differ. Differences also occur in the dates of
birth for these two children. Nancy census: 1849, genealogy 1852; William:
1847, genealogy 1843. These are indications that this might be a different
Shadrack Green. The comments by Martha McConnell cited above seem to confirm
that the Shadrack in Forsyth County in this 1870 census is a different
Shadrack from the one who was son Shadrack Green and Mary Cage (Martha Jones
his stepmother) and the was the husband of Benisa (or Beniza) Ann Owens.
Shadrack and wife Nancy are also recorded in the 1870 census in Forsyth,
Georgia.

Notes for Shadrack L GREEN

American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI)
Volume 67, Page 166
Shadrach Green
Birth 1760 North Carolina
Heads of fams. at the first U.S. census. NC. By U.S. Bureau of the Census.
Washington, 1908. (292p.):119

There is probably a confusion of two individuals here. This Shadrack L Green
is reported born in South Carolina, but the common father, also Shadrack or
Shaddrock Green, is reported born and died in Baltimore, Maryland. I have
been able to sort this out further. There are too many Shadrack Greens and
genealogies seem to have several all mixed and sprinkled around. Several
researchers are working in the morass and unclarity and confusion reigns.

Sources vary in reporting the birth place of Shadrack L Green, born 1760, as
North Carolina or South Carolina. Originally it was all one Royal colony.

"When the king of England demanded borders be set for North and South Carolina
in the 1700s, surveyors battled swamps and panthers, and notched trees to
demarcate the line. The boundary was officially set in 1772 ...." [Note that
this was just before the American Revolution.]
-- "North, South Carolina to Get New Border-Their Old One,"
http://www.newser.com/story/143459/north-south-carolina-to-get-new-border-their-old-one.html

Even after it was decided to divide it into two colonies, the swamps and
gorges and thick forests along the proposed border area made it uncertain and
adjustments were made periodically. In fact, one is now being made in 2014
after GPS surveyors clarified the errors of hand surveying over the previous
centuries.

I have been in that area. The local roads meander up and down hillsides and
across creeks and gorges, back and forth from one state into the other without
any markers. It was all one area to the folks who lived there, and pretty
much still is today.

Some sources have mixed or combined this Shadrack with his son. Shadrack
Green, son of William Green and brother of Meshack and Abednigo Green, was
born about 1760, according to a source in World Family Tree (Vol 146, Pedigree
#36). His son was born in 1800 and died in 1864, according to some sources.

We have questionable and spotty sources for this lineage. A few sources have
these two Shadracks listed as Shadrack Sr and Jr. Shadrack Jr had a son
named Shadrack L, born 1855 (source: One World Tree 41509312). This latter
is also sometimes designated as Junior and his Father as Senior. This seems
to indicate that all had L as the middle initial, but I have never seen the
full name in any source. Most genealogies lack any discussion.

I first got the names of William and his sons from Glenda Pool, a distant
cousin also working on the Green and related families. About 5 of us from
different descendant branches of the Green lineage discovered each other
through our various genealogies or family connections. Marion (Butch) Mixon
contacted me in response to my posted genealogy and we exchanged some
information. He was the one who put me in touch with Glenda's material.

Glenda had received information from others with pertinent research on this
family. The sources Glenda had collected presented difficulties because dates
for one Shadrack and one of his brothers Meshack extended over too long a
period to be the life of one person.

Even when we make the correction to apply the 1800 birth date to the second
Shadrack, there is still somewhat of a problem. With Shadrack's older brother
Meshack's birth date of 1720 in some sources, that means their father William
was born about 1700, or earlier.

This would mean for Shadrack to be born in about 1760, his father would be 60
years old. This is not impossible, but unusual. It also means a span of 40
years between the birth of Meshack and Shadrack. Further, with brother
Meshack's reported birth in 1720, that makes a spread of 80 years between
their births!

An additional generation, which I had discovered was missing in this sequence,
was filled by a source in One World Tree, and supported by other sources.
There was a Shadrick born in 1747 as a son of Isaac Green (b 1721) who was the
father of the Shadrack born in 1760. This will make the dates and generations
match more closely.

And on another tack, consider the naming pattern of the three known brothers,
sons of William. The normal order of names of the "three Hebrew boys" in the
book of Daniel is Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego. Thus I would expect the
first child to be named Shadrack. But from the limited information we have,
the earliest birth date is for Meshack. That might still be the case, it just
seems unusual. My first sources, through Glenda Pool, had no birth date for
Shadrack or Abednigo. (Oh, and there actually was a fourth son we know of,
named Thomas.)

It is still likely that there is yet another generation between the Shadrack
born in 1760 and the Shadrack born in 1800. Or perhaps the birth date for
Meshack is later. It already appears from the analysis of the information
about Meshack that there is a generation missing in his line also. It is too
long a stretch from his birth in 1720 to his marriage to Lucretia Franklin in
1770 and the birth of his first child in 1774!

It was known that there was a Shadrack Green, Jr, son of Shadrack son of
William. Glenda Pool's Green genealogy gives a death date of 1846 for
Shadrack, Jr, but no birth date. An early source in One World Tree
(Ancestry.com) gives a death date of 13 May 1864 for Shadrack Green, born
1800. This source has no father for this Shadrack.

It makes best sense of the information I now have analyzed to consider
Shadrack son of William as born 1760, died 1846, and son Shadrack born 1800,
died 1864. There may still be another generation to account for in there
somewhere back to William.

No date is given for the birth or death of the first Shadrack's father
William. Birth dates also vary considerably between sources.

There was a Shaddrock Green born in 1730, but with no place of birth given,
who could fill the gap between William and Shadrack born in 1760. World
Family tree Pedigree #3554 has no place of birth but reports a daughter Dicey
born in 1770 in Virginia. This place of birth is problematic, since William
and his sons are all reported by my original sources as born in South
Carolina.

One source gives the name of Shadrack Sr's wife as Martha Jones, while several
others say it was Mary Gage. The lists of children from the two sources are
very similar. More investigation needs to be done in other sources to confirm
the exact configuration and dating for William, Shadrack and other children,
and the next generation.

Record #01 114
Groom: Shad Green
Bride: Mary Gage
Bond date: 20 Dec 1782
Bond #000133750

The spotty indicators seems to say that Mary Gage died between 1897 and 1801.
There are gaps in the reported birth dates of children after the birth of
Joseph in 1897 and after the birth of Shadrack Jr in 1801. This would be when
Shadrack could have married the other reported wife Martha Jones. I suggest
it was after the birth of Shadrack, perhaps in childbirth, in about 1801. I
have no further information on Martha Jones, but she would also have been
likely previously married, having been born in about 1773.

The confusion that appears in the mostly undocumented genealogies may be an
indication that there were two Shadrack Greens between William and the
Shadrack we know was born in 1800, who have also been confused and compressed
into one in the sources. Information from early censuses and other documents,
provided by Glenda Pool from several sources, have not been conclusive in
resolving the difficulties. There are clues there that offered to unravel
more of this mystery and fill in many details, but the gaps and contradictions
are too great.
