Notes for William Bryant GREEN

Some early lists of children of Daniel (Daniel John) and M (maybe Mary) Green
listed one son named William Bryant Green. I seems clear, now, with added
information and more records now available and compared, that this was a
misunderstanding of Fannie Green's husband, William Bryant. Fannie was a
daughter of Daniel John and M (maybe Mary) Green. They had a son named
William Bryant Green.

An early genealogy reporting a list of the children stated that all the
children received $77 as settlement of estate of Daniel Green according to
Court records dated 8 Apr 1859, Hall County, Georgia. This statement was
found in an old genealogy that had the children of Daniel and Mary Green, with
just this statement in the notes for most of the children.

This is probably the reason William Bryant was mistaken as the first two names
of a child of Daniel and Mary. One of the children was named as William
Bryant Green.

We know now that this William Bryant was not William Bryant Green, but the
husband of Daniel's daughter Fannie, William Bryant. This was confirmed for
me when I received a message from a descendant of Fannie giving some family
details, including the identification of Fannie Green Bryant's son as Hardy
Bryant.

Other families reporting this family and the Bryant connection also report
that Fannie's husband was one William Bryant. This is supported by the 1850
and 1860 censuses, on which family researchers have commented on Ancestry.com,
further strengthening the identification. In the 1860 census, next door to
William and Fanny is Hardy Bryant and his wife Winney G. This Hardy Bryant is
age 26, matching a son of William. He also had a brother name William Bryant.

At this age Hardy would be the oldest child on this census. This matches the
1850 census, which reported all the children only by their initial. The
oldest child then was H Bryant, age 16. In 1860, the oldest child still in
William and Fanny's household is 22-year-old John.

Information is included here on William B Green and Martha Burch.

There has been also some confusion on the generational succession in this
lineage. It may be that Martha Burch had been connected as the wife of
William Bryant Green (son of Daniel John Green) who was born in about 1815,
and she actually married his son of the same name, who was closer to her own
age. Martha was born in 1832.

Georgia, Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978
William B Green Jr
Marriage 8 Jun 1857 Richmond, Georgia
Spouse Martha Burch

But this marriage is too late for this Martha Burch to be the Martha E
reported as the wife of William B Green in McBean, Georgia in the 1960 census.

In his marriage record transcription, found only in 2015, William is named
William B Green Jr. This is a surprise, since in our family line, his father
is Daniel also called Daniel John Green. This created some doubt as to the
correctness of this identification with Martha Burke.

In 1860 a William B Green is enumerated in Richmond County, Georgia. This may
be one source of confusion about the son of Daniel John Green. As information
developed over the years, it appears likely this identification is incorrect.
No further location or details can be found, however, that match any son of
Daniel John Green to match this William Green.

1860 Federal Census, Richmond County, Georgia, 8 October, 124th District, PO

The age for Martha has been overwritten. It appears possibly 21 overwritten
with 18. Ancestry interprets her age as 28. Martha may be the wife of
William. But even if she is 28, she is not the mother of John D at age 16.
His age has also been overwritten, and appears to be 16. These entries may
represent three children of William and a deceased spouse. I have found no
earlier marriage for William, to account for the mother of John D Green
reported in the 1860 census.

A genealogy for the Gardner family gives us Martha's maiden name of Burch.
This genealogy, and others with the same family configuration, do report the
wide difference in age between William and Martha.

The same two sons are reported by the Murphy genealogy as found in the above
Gardner tree.

This does report a father for Martha Burch's husband who is named William B
Green. Several genealogies have William B Green Jr and his spouse Martha
Burch. Most have no father, or like this one have his father as William B, as
we might expect from the designation Jr. Nowhere, however, have I found what
the initial B stands for.

So either the original information was wrong, and
(1) William Bryant Green is not correct as a son of Daniel John Green, son of
Meshack
(2) There is a son named William Bryant Green, but he is a different person
from Martha Burch's husband, and no further information is available for him.

Further, Richmond County, Virginia, where William B and Martha Burch were
married, and now where the Murphy Tree tells us his father lived, is not close
to Hall County, Georgia, with which our line of Greens is associated.

William D Marion Green

Death Nov 6, 1832 Rutherford County, North Carolina

William Green was born in Buffalo Creek, NC 16 May 1753. Billy died 6 Nov 1832
in Rutherford Co., NC, at 79 years of age. He was the first white child born
in what is now Cleveland County, NC.

His body was interred in a family cemetery at the old Bostic Brickyard,
Rutherford Co., NC. According to an old survey of the cemetery by C. Kenyon
Withrow, William Green's tombstone gave his death date and then age at death
as 81. This would make his birth date 1751 or 1752. The graveyard has been
destroyed since the survey.

Billy married Drucilla LNU bef 1775. Drusy was born about 1754. Drusy died 28
March 1828 in Rutherford County, NC at 73 years of age. She is buried beside
William.

William first became well known in the Rutherford Co. area during the
Revolutionary War. Like many men in the area, he fought on both sides during
the war. His mother and stepfather were strong Tories [but no names for them
are reported in this memorial]; Billy was a Major (Tory) captured at King's
Mountain. He was sentenced to hang, but escaped and joined the Continental
Army.

From 1781-1782, Billy served with the Ten Months Men under Sumter. He fought
in the Battle of Eutah Springs.
He settled in Rutherford County, after the War. Billy was a Charter member of
the Sandy Run Baptist Church and later founded Concord Baptist Church.
Billy served in the NC House of Commons in 1798 and served 14 terms as a NC
legistlator (Whig) from 1800-1824.

Maj William Marion Greene
Birth May 16, 1753 Rutherford County, North Carolina, USA
Death Nov. 6, 1832 Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina, USA

Fought for the patriot (Whig) Forces and by 1780 he was a Captain in the Whig
Militia where he was captured by the Tories. They held him as a prisoner until
he was freed during the Tory defeat at the Battle of Ramsaur's Mill. His only
British service was at King's Mountain. He was captured by the Patriots and
sentenced to death. The story of the escape became a favoite of many
historians.

***********************************************************
According to Lyman C Draper in "Kings Mountain and Its Heroes"

Captain William Green along with Lieutenant William Langum, were among the
Troy Prisoners, were tried before Colonel Cleveland, the charge against Green
seems to have been, That he had violated the oath he had taken as an officer
to support the governments of the State of North Carolina and of the United
States, by accepting a British commission, and fighting at King's Mountain.
Some of the British officers were present, and remonstrated at the course
taken, when Cleveland cut them short, saying: "Gentlemen, you are British
officers, and shall be treated accordingly---therefore give your paroles and
march off immediately; The other person is a subject of the State." Green and
Langum were condemned to be executed the next morning. "May be so," coolly
remarked Green.

That night, as he and his comrade, Langum, were lying before the camp-fire,
under blanket, Green rolled over so that his hands, fastened with buck-skin
straps, came in contact with Langum's face, who seeming to comprehend his
companion's intention, worked away with his teeth till he succeeded in
unfastening the knot. Green was now able to reach his pocket, containing a
knife, with which he severed the remaining cords, and those of Langum. He then
whispered to Langum to be ready to jump up and run when he should set the
example. Green was above the ordinary size, strong and athletic.

The guard who had special watch of them, was in the sitting posture, with his
head resting upon his knees, and had fallen asleep. Making a sudden leap,
Green knocked the sentinel over, and tried to snatch his gun from him; but the
latter caught the skirt of the fleeing man's coat, and Green had to make a
second effort before he could release himself from the soldier's grasp, and
gladly got off with the loss of a part of his garment. In another moment both
Green and Langum were dashing down a declivity, and through several shots were
fired at them, they escaped unhurt, and were soon beyond the reach of their
pursuers.

Aided by the friendly wilderness, and sympathizing Loyalists, they in time
reached their old region of Buffalo creek, in now Cleveland County, Green at
least renouncing his brief, sad experience in the Tory service, joined the
Whigs, and battled manfully thereafter for his country. Both Green and Langum
long survived the war, and were very worthy people.

schedule, Ettie is listed as a Chickasaw with a Chickasaw Father and White

William is listed as a Chickasaw, with a Chickasaw Father and Mother. Most of
the people on their page are Chickasaw. One family is Choctaw. They are in
Marietta, Love County, which was in the former Chickasaw Nation.

When William got married he and his bride Lena Doyle were living in McCurtain

Note that this genealogy has the same form of his name as I later discovered
his WWI Draft Registration Card above.

It appears from other family sources that the proper formal name was Elvie.
This is also the form of the name under which he was enrolled in the Dawes
Indian Rolls. All members of the Colbert line were registered as Chickasaws,
though they were living in Choctaw Nation when the Dawes roll was original
compiled. Fannie Colbert later transferred the registration of herself and
her children to Chickasaw Nation rolls when they moved to Chickasaw Nation.
For more information on the Colbert-Green registrations as Indians in Indian
Territory, see Notes for Fannie Colbert (wife of Daniel David Green b 1844).

"My mother-in-law was Margaret Green Glazener. Margaret was the daughter of
William Elvie Green and the granddaughter of Redie Jackson Green;
great-granddaughter of Daniel Green; and gg-granddaughter of Toliver Green.
As I am sure you know, Daniel Green was married to Francis Colbert the
daughter of an Indian agent. ... My son, Matthew Glazener is now becoming
interested in the family genealogy and is trying to find information on his
G-Grandfather, William Elvie Green. Unfortunately we do not know exactly
where he is buried."

Burial information came to light later. See Find a Grave information below.

The 1930 census confirms that William's wife's name is Lena, after it seems to
clearly be Lima in 1920. Note that all members of the household are reported
as White.

One genealogy has reported that William Elvie died in Oklahoma City on 15
October 1891. But this is the wrong William E Green. That man was born on 26
Feb 1884.

William Elvie's Social Security records have his birth a year later than that
reported on his WWI draft registration, saying 24 Aug 1892. There is no
middle name or initial in the SS Death Index, but the Application and Claims
records have his name as Will Elva Green.

This dearth information led to the discovery of a Find a Grave memorial for
him, with a photo of William's gravestone. On this his name is spelled Alvie,
whereas all early family sources and Chickasaw records spelled it Elvie or had
the middle initial A. Only the years of birth and death are on the
gravestone. Note that the year of birth her is another variation, adding 1892
to the previous 1890 and 1891. This is another common example of the lack of
focus on accuracy of detail in the worldview of the previous generations.
Sharing the same gravestone is his second wife Birdie Eugene (Gilbert), born
1894, died 1983.

Notes for William Henry GREEN

Some genealogies appear to have confused two individuals named William Henry
Green. I am not sure if I have the parentage of John Landrum Green correct.
One genealogy with good personal information on the family of John Landrum
Green, reports his father as William Henry Green, whose parents was John Elias
Green and Judith McSwain.

That genealogy reports that William Henry's wife was named Didema (Dema). But
the dates and information for this William Henry Green do not match those
reported in other sources for the son of John and Judith.

Furthermore, the wife is different, with other genealogies reporting Matilda
Caroline Bridges, and the birth dates of the children overlapping.
Information on Dema Hardin and Matilda Caroline Bridges report that both these
women lived into the 20th century.

It appears the three children of Dema reported in the one genealogy as mother
of John Landrum Green and two others has the wrong father of her husband
William Henry Green, or the wrong husband for Dema.

The child named here as Mary H matches fairly closely the child named Martha
in the 1850 census. I would suspect the child was named Mary Martha, which
was a common enough double name, except for the initial H in 1960.

This 1870 census report is puzzliing, since Civil War Regiment records report
William J Green died in aprison camp in Illinois in 1865. In the list of
Green surnamed enlistees, we find tow of his father Tyree Green's brothers,
James M Green and Thomas Bention Green. All these Greens joined the army on
the same day. It appears thay are all related, though the identities of some
of them do not match known members of this Green family.

I suspect that the Benton A Green was actually Thomas Bention. I suspect that
there was a confusion over the name Thomas Benton, and the middle name got
entered as another person. This list notes that there is no further record on
that name.

The Regimanet record reports that William was buried in the City Cemetery of
Chicago. This cemetery, where WIlliam was originally buried, was closed and
reburials began in 1859. Burials continued there throiugh the Civil War, even
as reburials were being conducted, and the last burials were in 1866.

------------------------
Chicago City Cemetery was located in at the south end of what is now Lincoln
Park. The first burials were in 1843, and at its peak, had 20,000 burials.
City residents did not like the cemetery location, which was on low land,
close to the lake, thinking it contaminated water supply and aided the spread
of diseases such as cholera. In 1859, the city stopped selling lots at the
cemetery and reinterments began in the newly-opened Rosehill Cemetery. The
last burials at City were in 1866.

HIs obituary reports that he died on Friday and the funeral was on Saturday.
No dates were given, and date of the article is unknown. From the wording of
the obituary, it appears to have been published Sunday. His death certificate
reports the date of death as 2 October with burial on 4 October.

The calendar indicates 2 October 1931 was a Friday, matching the obituary.
Since the obituary reported the funeral had been held on Saturday afternoon,
the obituary was most likely published in the Sunday paper 4 October. It
seems most likely the burial was on Saturday, but the obit may have been
written up and prepared for publication, then for some reason funeral had to
be reset for Sunday..

Obituary of William Joseph (Jodie) Green;
Age 80, Died at his home Friday (death certificate says 2 October 1931),

4 October)

Notes for William Lois Thomas GREEN

One of William's middle names Lois probably derived originally from Aloysius
(Aloisius). The source for this has not been found. In the 1910 census he
was reported as Loice Green.

William was born in America, a sawmill town in southeastern Oklahoma, in the
Ouachita Natoinal Forest.

-------------------
America is a ghost town in southeastern McCurtain County, Oklahoma, United
States. It was located 7 miles southeast of Haworth. The town was named after
America Stewart, wife of Tom Stewart, a local resident.

History
America grew around a sawmill built by William Spencer and his three brothers
in 1907. The Spencer family built 40 houses to lease to sawmill workers, and
by 1910 there were 200 people living in America. In 1911, after all the
timber had been cut, Spencer opened a cotton gin and general store and became
a cotton buyer. Cotton grown on the cleared land was shipped out by the
Arkansas and Choctaw Railway ('Frisco) that ran through the town. After
cotton production declined in the 1920s, most residents moved out. The cotton
gin closed in 1933, around the time when the Great Depression was at its
worst. The post office, established since July 24, 1903, was disestablished
on February 15, 1944. The general store closed the next year, completing the
decline. ... Today, part of the former townsite of America is in the Ouachita
National Forest. Only two old houses and a railroad marker remain.
