Notes for William Thomas GREEN

"William Green was imprisoned at Elmyra, NY in 1864 and most likely died there
since he never returned home. A relative has a letter he wrote from the
prison in 1864 to his wife J C S (McSwain) Green. That letter is in the
possession of Mrs. Donnis Martin of Lattimore, NC."

Henry Green (b. 1775, d. 1834 m. Nancy Reeves), who was possibly the son of
Major William Marion Green (b. 1753, d. 1832, married Mary McEntire."

-----------------------
Willis & Polly Green had four sons enlist in the Confederacy, William & Joseph
didn't return. Willis Green is most likely a son of Henry and Nancy Green as
known he was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1805 and his age
fits in the family of Henry and Nancy Reeves Green on the 1810-1830 Rutherford
County, NC censuses. Per these census records, there are 3 males and 2
females unaccounted for children of this family and Willis definately would
fit one of these. His son, Henry Reeves Green, was named for someone and this
researcher believes that it was for his probable grandmother, Nancy Reeves.

The names of Willis' other sons, Joseph, William and John, match the names of
their probable uncles. Willis was living next door to his probable brother,
Elias Green, on the 1830 Rutherford Co., NC census. I believe that Willis and
Polly Smart Green followed Polly's father, Joseph Smart, from Rutherford
County, North Carolina to Tippah County, Mississippi in the mid 1840's and
none of Willis' siblings went with them. Both the Joseph Smart family and the
Willis Green family are in Tippah County, MS on the 1850 census.

abandoned cemeteruy. But trhere is a list of 200 memorials for burials in tis
cemetery on Find a Grave. Some genealogies mention other indfividuals buried
there with no marker, and the cemetery as abandoned.

Only two individuals named Green buried in this cemetery have memorials on

Winnie Alice Green was the daughter of Abner Jefferson and Elizabeth Ann
Coxsey Green. I have done extensive research and the two Green families are
not related.

Winnie married Ward Beecher "Beech" Green on 18 Oct 1907 in Robert Lee, Coke
Co, Texas and together, they had 4 children: Fines Archie (1908-1937), Felicia
Ann (named after her Grandma Mammy 1910-1947), Riley Childress (1913-1986),
and William "Billie" Prue Green (1916-1947).

In 1929 Beech had died while the family lived in Maricopa Co, Arizona. Winnie
and her children then moved to live near the rest of the relatives in
California. Winnie's 1930 Census shows that Felicia had left and married, but
the boys were still at home while she worked as a laundress.

Wish I had pictures, but have found her Obit in the LA Times and the Cemetery
was kind enough to send me maps of where she was interred at. Thank you all so
much!

The information on Lila led me to another site that had information on her

The latter genealogy had very little information on Woodrow's parents, but did
have his mother's name. The maiden name here differed from that in my
previous sources, reporting her as Lena Cunningham, with no further details,
and no information on birth, death or parents.

Note also that they propose alternative middle name Edward for Woodrow's
father, for which I have seen no prior evidence, and for which they offer
none. The site does have posted the handwritten 1902 Chickasaw registration
card, reporting his name as William E Green.

Note that Zilpah's name has changed here to Zilpha. The first is the normal
biblical spelling of this Hebrew name. The latter could be a simple
transposition, a spelling mistake, but could also indicate a shift in
pronunciation from p to F sound after the L. Later we find it as Zelpha and
Zelphia, though that could be a misreading of Zilpha or Zilphia.

Note that the Stinson son's given name is written here as Milliam. It must be
intended to be William, and the enumerator either wrote is thoughtlessly as an
M, or his loops for the W are curved strangely and differently than other Ws
on the page, included a William in the previous household.

Shelly Cloud's genealogy reports information that identifies the child William
in the 1880 census. Shelly tells us that Zilpah married William A Stinson in
1875. Their son William was born in 1876. The enumerator erred in reporting
her as Single. She was actually divorced from William Stinson. This census
has no designation for divorced, offering only Single, Married or Widowed. I
guess Single was the closest. The surname is also wrong, since Zilpah's last
name, as well as William's, is Stinson at this time.

Shelly reports her date of death, and her full name as:
Zelphia Canzada Green (1851-1940)

The 1900 census reports that Zilpah has borne only 1 child, and that would be
William A Stinson, son of her first husband, in the Lewis household. If this
report is correct, that means that Zilpah has had no children in the 24 years
since William was born, no children with her current and second husband Lloyd
Lewis.

Notes for Elizabeth GREENE

The Greenes are associated with a town called Norton. Some genealogies report
that Elizabeth was born in Norton, Northumberland, which I cannot locate.
There is a town of Norton in Daventry District of Southern Northamptonshire.
The full name of the town is Greene's Norton.

"In medieval times, the village was known a simply 'Norton' and was a royal
domain of Edward the Confessor and later William the Conqueror. In the 14th
century the whole village was sold to Sir Henry Greene for a total of 20
shillings hence the name Greene's Norton, which today is reduced to just
Greens Norton."
-- Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greens_Norton

We are specifically told in some sources that Elizabeth's mother died in
Nortons Green, an alternative name for Greens Norton. Her father's birth and
death place are both reported as Norton in Northamptonshire.

Elizabeth Greene
Birth 1443 in Norton, Northamptonshire, England
Death 1464 in Farneborough, Warwickshire, England
Father Thomas Greene
Birth 10 Feb 1400 in Norton, Northamptonshire, England
Death 18 Jan 1462 in Norton, Northamptonshire, England
Mother Marina Beler
Birth 1414 in Eye, Herefordshire, England
Death 10 Sep 1489 in Nortons Green, England
-- Minday/Forsberg, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4792858/person/1014599279

Some genealogies report that Elizabeth's mother was Philippa Ferrer, while
some report Marina Beler. It may be that her father had two wives. I have
considered that there may be two different Thomas Greenes with a daughter
Elilzabeth. Father and son may have each had a daughter named Elizabeth.
This does appear to be the case in some genealogies, with Elizabeth born in
1421, daughter of Thomas.

But different genealogies have different wives for Thomas Greene born
variously 1398, 1399 and 1400, with wives named Mary Talbot, Philippa Ferrers
(Farrar) and Marina Beler. No genealogy I have seen has multiple wives. Some
genealogies report Philippa's death as occurring in 1415, which is before
either Elizabeth was born in 1421 or 1445. Some have Philippa as the wife of
the elder Thomas.

Notes for John Colbert GREENE

The name Green has the variation of Greene. At various times in this same
Green lineage we find the name spelled by a family member or in public records
as Greene, though the normal way is Green.

"Uncle John Colbert Green always went by Greene. That’s on his tombstone
and death certificate. He and Aunt Pearl are buried in the same cemetery as
my mother, etc., but in a different plot. His children also used Greene, but
everyone else used Green. Don’t know why he was different. I may have told
you that Uncle Fred is buried in our family plot at Cottage Grove Cemetery
which is a few miles south of Plain Dealing, LA."

In the list of burials, one name above is Levader. This is the name under
which John Colbert's daughter was reported in the 1940 census. The name on
her grave is the same. However, this transcription list from Cottage Grove

variation appears on her Find a Grave memorial, where the memorialist has
given her the name of Lavender.
