Notes for Andy GREGORY

As far as his children said they ever knew, Andy never had but the one name. I
remember his rural mailbox on the section-line road in front of his house,
south of Lindsay, Oklahoma, was labeled "A. Gregory."

All his accounts and his mail were always in the name Andy Gregory or A
Gregory. His nieces and nephews called him Uncle Andy. His grandchildren
called him Grandpa. His earlier children Dessie and Josephine called him
Papa, the other children called him Daddy.

His birth record from Tennessee reports his name as Andy None Gregory. As far
as any of the family knew, Andy never had a middle name.

In the 1900 census he is listed as Andrew. And his brother Edd is listed as
Edward. The family know for certain that these "full" names are not correct.
The over-correction error of the census enumerator is confirmed when we see
that he listed the father of these children as Doctor instead of "Dock."

In 1910 Andy is in his parents home in Richland Township of Stephens County
(just outside Marlow town). The 1910 census enumerator was apparently barely
literate. Most of the names are horribly misspelled and the handwriting is
scrawling and almost illegible. The family name appears to be written Grgery,
or maybe Gegery. Andy is listed as Anda. His father Dock is listed as Dolf,
and his mother Julia as July!

In 1910, we discover Dock and family in Richland Township of Stephens County
(near Marlow) Oklahoma. He is recorded under the spelling of Dolf Gegery.
The writing of this enumerator is fairly legible, but spelling is awful, and
he seems not to have heard correctly the forms of some names.

In 1913, Andy was attending school in Stephens County, Oklahoma, where the
family lived, along with his younger sister Lucy and brother Wiley. Their
father signed the school card as D G Gregory.

Andy married Alpharetta Mae Green, whom he had known for several years as
their families lived close together in Richland Township, Stephens County,
Oklahoma. They married in October 1913. I have not been able to locate any
record of this family in the 1920 census. I did find Andy's WWI Draft
Registration from 1917. He was still in Marlow at that time.

In 1913 Andy married Alpharetta Mae Green, whose family lived on a farm near
Marlow. In 1918 they were still in Marlow when Andy registered fr the WWI
draft.

In the 1920 census, when Alfred was 6 months old, the family was living in
Lindsay Township of Garvin County, Oklahoma, about 40 miles northeast of
Marlow. Alfred's name there is recorded by the enumerator as Alford Andrew.
They were living in Marlow in 1917 when Josie was born and 1918 when Andy
registered for the draft. After Alfred's death, family members say they lived
near Cox City, then later near Purdy, just south of Erin Springs.

It is a puzzle why the enumerator put US as the birth place of both parents of
all the children, since their states of birth are given right in the record.
Next door is Walter Trout, one household in the family whom Andy's daughter
Wanda June would later marry.

Andy was a Farmer all his life, from his childhood. I remember he was still
living on his farm in 1973-4, though I do not remember how actively he himself
was actually working the farm at that time. He moved into a house in town for
about the last year of his life.

During part of the time while he had his own farm he also worked for others in
the Broom Corn fields, for which Lindsay was known in earlier years. My
mother told me about her father and many of the men of the county working in
the broom corn harvest. The slogan of Lindsay at that time was "Lindsay broom
corn sweeps the world." When I was a boy, a sign at the city limits of
Lindsay stated that Lindsay was the Broomcorn Capital of the World.

In 1940, for some reason the enumerator wrote Everett's name first even though
two children are older. The youngest daughter Loretta does not appear with
the family. She was born in 1936.

Andy was born in Newport, the county seat of Cocke County. In his WWI draft
registration, he report Newport as his place of birth. But in 1942, he
reported his birth place as Jefferson County, Tennessee. This is where the
family lived, and it appears their place was near the county line with Cocke
County.

Andy Gregory was killed in a car crash when he had a stroke while driving.
His sister-in-law Dorothy Green was riding with him at the time, and suffered
a broken hip, which crippled her to a large degree. Dorothy was the wife of
Homer Green, youngest brother of Andy's wife, Alpharetta Mae Green.

Funeral services for Andy were held at the Brown-Boydston Funeral Home in
Lindsay, with Bill Gentry, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial was in the Greenhill Cemetery, near Lindsay, in McClain County.

A couple of genealogies have the full name sof the parents of this home as
William George Gregory and Syntha Ann McGregor.

There is a marriage record in the name Annfield Gregory, age 24, born and
resident in Fleming County, Kentucky. She was marrying a 60-year old man in
1952, one William Emmons, a widower also born and resident of Fleming County.

Anfield married a much older widower. In the 1860 census, she is reported as
age 30 and he is 70. She was only 9 years older than his oldest child still
in the household. The last two children, Sarah and Charlotte, in the
following census enumeration would be her children. One oddity is that the
census is that on William's record, it is checked that he was married within
the year. But we see in their marriage record that WIlliam married Anfield
Gregory in 1852.

Notes for Annie Ailene GREGORY

Earl and Anna lived on in Lindsay, Oklahoma, till sometime in the 1980s, when
they moved to Mesa, Arizona, where she died. I (Orville Boyd Jenkins) learned
in May 2007 that Anna was actually a nickname, and her real name was Annie.
The form Annie is usually a nickname for Anna.

The full name was given to me by my aunt Loretta Gregory Gay. Loretta told me
that Anna's father always called her Annie, while everyone else called her
Anna. I knew her personally and had always known her as Anna. My mother
tells me that is what all the other family called her.

Notes for Archibald Hatchett GREGORY

FN 1 We are indebted to George Craghead Gregory, Esquire, Richmond, Virginia,
an authority on the Gregory family history, for a critical reading of the data
herein offered relative to Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory, their children
and grandchildren.... George Craghead Gregory is the son of Archibald Hatchett
Gregory and his (first) wife, Lucy Jane Brodie; grandson of Richard Henry
Gregory and Mary Elizabeth Hatchett; great grandson of Herbert Gregory and
Lucy Osborne Thweatt.
-- "Gregory Family of King William County, Virginia," in Winston of Virginia

Lucy Gregory 33 F b Virginia [b abt 1817]

Hubbard Gregory 8 M b North Carolina [b abt 1842]

We know from the report above that Archibald's mother was Mary Elizabeth
Hatchett. In fact, her maiden name was Archibald's middle name, as reported
by Archibald's son George. Lucy is likely a sister of Richard, named after
their mother, Lucy Osborne Thweatt.

On the same page is F R Gregory, age 434, who is likely Richard's brother.
