Notes for Berry Alexander GREGORY

This Berry A Gregory may be the son of Robert Gregory, born in Union County
(old 96th), South Carolina, and died in DeKalb County, Alabama, who seems to
be the son of Robert Gregory, son on Isaac Gregory, who moved to Union County
from Virginia. But one genealogy presents an index record that says Berry
Alexander Gregory's parents were Berry Gregory and Margaret Word. His
father's name may have been Robert Berry Gregory. But he appears in records
as Robert Gregory.

Berry Alexander (Alec) Gregory (14 November 1856-28 May 1950), fourth child of
Robert and Margaret, was born near Lebanon in DeKalb County, Alabama. The old
homestead was located on acreage now owned by I D Gregory, a grandson. Before
his marriage, he worked as a jailor in Lebanon (the County Seat at the time)
to earn money to buy a farm.

Alexander was a “circuit-riding” Baptist preacher. He pastored Mt Zion
Baptist Church for twenty years. He traveled from church to church in a buggy
drawn by a claybank (dun) colored mare that he called, “Old Mag.” He kept
a journal of his travels and a record of marriages and funerals he performed,
as well as fees he was paid. Most years he didn’t even earn enough to keep
his horse shod. Unfortunately, this journal appears to be lost, either burned
in a fire that destroyed the home of daughter, Mary Yarbrough, or lost by
family members.

Alec married Sarah Elizabeth Burk (29 September 1856-9 August 1929) on 10
October 1878. Sarah was the daughter of Wilburn and Martha Ann Carver Burk.
Both are buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Their children: William L; Sally
Josephine Rebecca; Charlsie F; John Fred Walker; Robert Alexander; Mary Jane;
Wilburn Wallace; and Stella Estell.

One history names a child not found in other lists of children of Berry
Alexander Gregory and Sarah Elizabeth Burk. His name appears as William L
Gregory. He would be the child indicated in the 1900 census, which says 8
children were born but only 7 were living at that time.

A matching Find a Grave memorial in DeKalb County, Alabama links to a memorial
for his mother in the name of Margaret Gregory. No link is provided to a
memorial for his father. Links to memorials for three children match
individuals reported in the above 1900 census. One anomaly is that this
memorial reports that death occurred in Cherokee County, Alabama, where
Gregorys also lived, but his death record (index only) above reports he died
in DeKalb County The date of death and wife's memorial also match.

Notes for Berry J Adolphus GREGORY

----------------------------
General Introduction

BENJAMIN J. GREGORY (12 December 1786-7 June 1853), son of Gerard and Freelove
Gregory, married Elizabeth Crosby Jeter (2 January 1794-18 May 1851), daughter
of James and Mary Crosby Jeter, on 11 June 1811. Both Elizabeth and Benjamin
were lifelong residents of Union County.

.....Beniamin's will (which is presented in full on the pages following) is an
interesting document in many ways. He willed 1547 acres of land specifically
and made reference to other acreage. There is evidence of his having bought
1262 acres during his life and having sold 808.5 acres, plus his share of the
100 acres of his parent's estate.

.....The explanation for this is fairly simple. Very often, in the early years
of our country, deeds were not even recorded until the buyer was ready to
dispose of the land. Inherited land was quite often not recorded.

.....David Sims Jeter, Elizabeth's unmarried brother, remembered his Gregory
nephews in his will and also set aside land for the Jeter Family Cemetery. He
went a step farther and provided funds for tombstones for his family members.
It is ironic that his is one of the smaller stones in the cemetery.

.....Benjamin and Elizabeth were the parents of ten known children - nine sons
and one daughter. They were: William Harrison; Aswin Starks; James Thompson;
Benjamin Franklin; John J.E.; Andrew Jackson; Argulass; Sarah Elvira; Berry J.
Adolphus; and Pickens Butler.

Will of Benjamin J Gregory
The State of South Carolina

.....I, Benjamin J. Gregory of Union District in the State aforesaid, being of
sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, and taking into
consideration the uncertainty of human life, do constitute and ordain this my

this purpose I authorize my executors, hereinafter named, to make sale of such
cotton or other produce as may be on hand at the time of my death, the
proceeds o which, together with my cash on hand, I set apart for the payment
of my debts and funeral expenses.

.....To William Harrison Gregory, my eldest son, I will and bequeath all that
tract of land whereon he now lives containing two hundred and sixty-one acres
more or less, being one-half of the DeGraffenreidt tract bounded by A.S.
Gregory, James Jeter and others; valued to him at Seven dollars ($7.00) per

of Rochester, adjoining the first named tract, valued at six hundred, fifteen

Ashby Land, valued at __ dollars; together with all and singular: the rights,
members, hereditaments and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise
incident or appertaining to the said John J.E. Gregory, his heirs and assigns,
in fee simple. I also will and bequeath to the said John J.E. Gregory, the
three following named slaves, to wit: Cato, a Negro man slave, valued at seven
hundred dollars ($700); and one Negro woman slave, called Farr, and child,
valued at seven hundred dollars ($700); together with the issue and increase
of said slaves. I also will and bequeath to the said John J.E. Gregory, one
horse, saddle and bridle with other things charged on my Book of Accounts
against my children.

.....To my sixth son, Andrew J. Gregory, I will and bequeath all that parcel
or tract of land whereon he now lives which has been already conveyed to him
by John Mann, I having paid the money therefor, containing two hundred,
thirty-one and a half (2311/2) acres more or less, known as the "John Mann
Place," valued at the sum of fourteen hundred, twenty-eight dollars ($1428);
together with all and singular: the rights, members and hereditaments and
appurtenances to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or
appertaining. I also will and bequeath to the said Andrew J. Gregory, two
Negro slaves: one named Isaac, a man, valued at seven hundred dollars ($700);
one woman slave, named Dicey, valued at six hundred dollars ($600); one horse,
saddle and bridle with various other articles charged on my Book of Accounts
against my children.

.....To my seventh son, B.J. Adolphus Gregory, I will and bequeath the
following named Negro slaves, six in number: George, a male, valued at seven
hundred dollars ($700); Horace, a male, valued at three hundred dollars
($300); Henry, a male, valued at four hundred dollars ($400); Catherine, a
female, valued at six hundred dollars ($600); Juliana, a female, valued at
five hundred dollars ($500); and Josephine, a female, valued at two hundred,
fifty dollars ($250); together with the future issue and increase of the said
female slaves to B.J. Adolphus Gregory and his lawful heirs. The above named
slaves are not to be liable for the debts or subject to the contracts of the
said B.J. Adolphus Gregory, he is merely to have the use of them during his
natural life; and, at his death, the said slaves, together with their issue
and increase, are to go into possession of the legal heirs of him the said
B.J. Adolphus; and, in case the said B.J. Adolphus should die without lawful
heirs, then the said Negroes, together with their issue and increase, are to
revert to my estate and be disposed of in the same manner as the residue of my
property not herein specially devised. In case any of the above named Negroes
should die before I put them in possession of the said B.J. Adolphus Gregory,
it is not to be his loss, but such loss shall fall upon my estate. I also will
and bequeath to my said son, B.J. Adolphus Gregory, one horse, saddle and
bridle valued at one hundred dollars ($100) which I have delivered to him.

.....To my eighth son, Pickens Butler Gregory, I will and bequeath the six
following named slaves, to wit: Gilbert, valued at seven hundred dollars
($700); Prince, valued at five hundred dollars ($500); Jo, valued at four
hundred dollars ($400); Manerva, valued at six hundred dollars ($600); Mariah,
valued at three hundred dollars ($300); and Charlotte valued at four hundred
dollars ($400); together with the future issue and increase of the said female
slaves. The said last named slaves, together with their issue and increase,
are to be subject to precisely the same conditions and restriction as those
slaves herein before bequeathed to B.J. Adolphus Gregory.

.....To my daughter, Sarah Elvira Gregory, I will and bequeath one bed and
furniture, one gold watch, one bureau (marble top), and one hundred dollars
($100) in cash to be paid to her as soon as practicable after my death. My
said daughter has already received about four hundred dollars more than any
other of my children by way of tuition and she has married contrary to my
will. I desire that she shall be excluded from any portion of my estate except
such articles as are devised to her.

.....To my son, B. Franklin Gregory, I also will and bequeath one horse,
saddle and bridle with various other articles charged to my Book of Accounts
against my children.

.....The residue of my estate, both real and personal, I wish valued by three
disinterested persons, to be chosen by my executors, and to be divided into
lots and apportioned amongst my eight sons herein before named. If, however,
my said executors should think it best for the interest to be sold, they may,
after giving the usual notice, put it up at auction and sell it to the highest
bidder, dividing the proceeds as herein directed; and I hereby authorize and
empower my said executors to make, execute and deliver titles to my said
lands, the whole or any portion thereof, to such person or persons as may
comply with the terms of the sale.

.....The property herein before devised to my six first named sons has been
put into their possession by me and, in the settlement of my estate, is to be
received by them at the prices charged in this, my last Will and Testament, in
my Book of Accounts against them without interest.

.....I will and desire that my eight sons above named receive an equal share
of my whole estate and, to this end, I direct that the residue of my estate be
divided in such a way as to accomplish this object.

.....I further will and desire that the residue of my Negro property and other
personal property not herein specially disposed should be held by my said sons
for their use and benefit during their lives. It is not to be subject to their
debts or contracts, but is to descend to their lawful heirs in the manner as
is prescribed for the Negroes of B.J. Adolphus, and Pickens Butler Gregory
herein specially devised.

.....I will and desire that my sons Wm. Harrison Gregory and J. Thompson
Gregory act as my executors to this, my last Will and Testament.

.....In witness whereof I have hereinto subscribed my name and affixed my
seal, this Fifth day of December in the Year of our Lord, One thousand, eight
hundred and fifty-one; and in the Seventy-fifth Year of the Sovereignty and
Independence of the United States of America.

B.J. Gregory

taken for a part and parcel of the same, to wit:

more particularly described in a Deed of Gift made by me to the said Sarah
Elvira, subject to the conditions and reversions mentioned in said deed.

my death as is herein before prescribed. She is to be charged in the said

have been heretofore made with the exception of the six slaves aforesaid.

personal, as my said daughter may be entitled to receive by virtue of this
codicil may be delivered by my executors to my sons, J. Thompson Gregory and

same condition and trusts as is named in the Deeds of Gift herein before
referred to, and to form a portion of the trust estate confided to them. I
hereby revoke so much of my last Well and Testament as makes a special bequest
of one hundred dollars in cash to my said daughter, Sarah Elvira Gregory.

.....In witness whereof I have herewith subscribed my name and affixed my

Margaret Scaife, daughter of Ferdinand Dugraphanel and Mary (Wilkes) Scaife,
was born in Chester County, South Carolina in 1826. She married A S Gregory
of Union County in that county in 1846. They lived in Union County, where Mr
Gregory was a farmer. He died in the early 1860s and was buried in Union
County.

After the War Between the States was over and the Scaife men had returned home
and decided to move to Arkansas, the widow Gregory took her four children and
her colored nurse in her carriage and moved to Arkansas. In the 1880 U S
census of Phillips County, Arkansas, she is listed as head of household and 54
years of age. Three of her sons were living with her at that time. The
children of Mr and Mrs Gregory were:
Sarah Gregory	James Gregory
Brooks H Gregory	Margaret Susan Gregory
[They actually had 9 children. These 4 were those still at home with her when
she moved. Sarah was reported as Sallie in the censuses.]

Information in several records for John Wesley Skeans Gregory, son of Sarah
Skeans, indicates he was born in 1878, before his mother Sarah married
Jefferson Gregory. This information matches the record for Charley Gregory in
the 1900 census below. Charley was reported as born later, matching the age
given here for Wesley.

Notes for Charles Bluford GREGORY

Loretta Gregory Gay records this name as Charlie Bluford, based on family
memories. 1920 Garvin County, Oklahoma, Federal Census records show his name
as Charles B., age 38. Social Security also records his name as Charles.

In 1900 Charlie is enumerated in the first Federal Census that included the
Indian Nations. Charlie's father Dock Gregory had moved the family from
northern Texas to Earl, Oklahoma, but they are enumerated in Chickasaw Nation,
Indian Territory.

Earl itself was in J County of the old Oklahoma Territory, near the border
with Indian Territory. Perhaps the Gregory homestead was actually across the
border east into Chickasaw Nation, accounting for their enumeration there.

Charlie married soon after the 1920 census. His family had moved to Elmore
City in Garvin County, and the girl he married was from a family that had
lived in Marlow. The Gregory farm was near Marlow, in Stephens County, before
they moved to Elmore City, to the northeast in Garvin County. Charlie married
Annie (Anna) Cauble after the census in 1920.

In 1920 Annie was enumerated with her family in Marlow in March 1920 (though
the census date that year was 1 January 1920).

Their marriage record has not been found. So we are not sure whether Charlie
went back to Marlow to marry Annie or her family had moved in the meantime and
they married in Garvin County. They moved to Texas and both Annie's parents
died there, her father in 1924 and her mother in 1925.

In 1930, Charlie is reported in Elmore City, married and in his own household
with Annie Cauble (Cobble), four houses down from his father Dock. An oddity
occurs in the listings on this page. Both Dock and Charlie are given the
middle initial of G. Dock was also listed as Dock G in 1920. Members of the
family do not know where this G comes from. For Charlie, we know his name is
Charles Bluford, documented as Bluford or initial B in several sources.

Charlie is listed as Chas G. Charles and Annie's oldest child is Vivian, at
age 9. It appears that they got married in 1910, after the census of that
year. In 1920, Charles B is listed as living in the household of his father
in this same locale of Elmore Township.

In 1930, the census still designates their page as in Elmore Township, but I
notice that Ancestry designates their location as Elmore City, whereas in
1920, Ancestry designates this as Elmore Township. In this census, the place
of birth of Charles' father is changed to Tennessee, whereas it has previously
been Alabama. This also happened with his brother Tom's entry in the 1920
census.

Charlie and Anna had had difficulties in their marriage for some time, because
of Anna's wild style of life. Charlie had doubts about the parentage of all
his children, bacause he found Anna running aorund with various other men.

"I have spoken to Annie's cousin and she has told me that Annie was quite the
wild one so she wasn't surprised about it. Makes one wonder if the of
children were Gregory"
-- Pamela McDonald-Kown, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 22
December 2019

"Uncle Charlie said he didn't know if any of their children were really his.
He said he would find her out in the field with different men."
-- Loretta Gregory Gay, niece of Charlie Gregory, phone conversation to her
nephew Orville Boyd Jenkins, 23 December 2019

"Virgil's parents are Annie and Charles Gregory, only DNA proves that he is
not a bio child of Charles, Annie was a Cauble and that is where my DNA
connection first came from. Through DNA research by a registered Genetic
Genealogist, 2 and 3 cousins were determined in matches to me to a man whose
last name was Battles."
-- Pamela McDonald-Kown, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 22
December 2019

On the other side of the coin, Annie's daughter Bobi Jo Roberso-Davis,
commented on the idea that her mother was flighty and profligate.

"Knowing how backward my Mother was about sex, it's really hard for me to
believe that my two 1/2 sisters weren't fathered by Charlie. It absolutely
came as a shock to me when Pamela McDonald-Kown contacted me about my 1/2
brother Virgil (always called Greg) not being a Gregory. There was never a
nice word said about Charlie by my sister Vivian. She said he was really mean
to her, Eva and Virgil and abused my Mother physically."
-- Bobi Jo Roberson-Davis, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 26 April 2020

No divorce record has been found. It may be that the revelation of Virgil's
true parentage was a factor in the divorce. But one can imagine physical
abuse would be a primary cause for divorce. As in many cases, there were
probably multiple causes for the divorce.

In the 1940 census, Annie is enumerated with her second husband Herman
Roberson in Lindsay, as Anna Roberson. Her two children Virgil and Vivian
Gregory are in their household.

Annie's niece Loiretta Gregory Gay reports that Herman was known as Skinny
Roberson, and he was a fireman in the Lindsay Fire Department. She said she
never knew his real name, only Skinny.
-- Loretta Gregory Gary, phone conversation with Orville Boyd Jenkins, 23
December 2019

The family records and the Social Security Death Index agree that Charlie's
birth date was 25 December 1881. This census, however, gives his age as 46.
It should be 48, since he would be 49 in December of 1930. In 1920 he was
reported as 38, which would match the proper birth date.

Charles Tilden "Charlie" Gregory
Birth Mar 26, 1876 Rowan County, Kentucky
Death Jul 4, 1938 Rowan County, Kentucky

Charles Gregory was a son of John B Gregory. His middle name is of some
dispute, and has been variously reported as Tilden, Gilden, George, and
Laytenis. His birth year is also in dispute, as some sources indicate it is
actually 1879, and others claim 1878. He married Sylvania Brown in 1902 and
they had four children, plus one that died.

Charles and Sylvania are buried in unmarked graves, very near to the graves of
her parents and brothers, which are also unmarked, I believe. There is also
an unmarked grave for the unnamed child that died. The graves are reportedly
marked by plain stones to denote the graves, but no tombstones. This
information comes from Wilford Gregory's widow Mary Jane Ham who told this in
a verbal conversation. Unfortunately there is no written record of this and
she is now deceased.

I have written a small biography of his father, which includes some details on
Charles as well. Contact me for more information.

Notes for Charlotte Ann GREGORY

----------------------------
Jesse's mother was Mary Jamison. This has been much debated, but I believe
that this is accurate. One strong indication is that he gave his first son
the middle name of Jameson, Mary's maiden name. We also know that Mary had a
slave named Nancy, a dowery from her father David Jameson, and who had served
as nanny to her children. Jesse named his second daughter Nancy.

We know Mary Jameson was mother to Charlote Ann Gregory because she appears as
the bride's mother on February 20, 1815 when Charlote Ann married her husband
Lewis Templeman in Bath County Kentucy. Charlote Ann was born, according to
several reports, in Prince William County Virginia in 1793, exact date
unspecifed. We know Mary Jamison lived in Prince William County with her
husband Benjamin Gregory, where he died in September of 1798. It is not a
huge reach to name Jesse as very likely born in Prince William County.

We believe Jesse and Charlote Ann were brother and sister, partly because
Jesse named his frstborn daughter Charlote, and partly because Mary's brother
Benjamin Jamison named a daughter Charlote.
