The tracts granted in New Kent fell on division of that county in 1691 into King and Queen County and on division [p 242] of this latter in 1701 within the County of King William. ----------------- [footnotes] [... continued from p 240] Ann; sons Thomas, Robert, Richard and John (the last three under fifteen years of age); wife Elizabeth (Essex County Records). 1 In April, 1687, James Taylor had a patent for land left by Robert Bishop to John Gregory and by said John Gregory to his sister Mary, now wife of said James Taylor. He lived in Essex County and died there, evidently unÂmarried. There are many references to him in the Essex County records. On November 24, 1718, RICHÂARD GREGORY, of Essex County, sold to Thomas Wheeler, of Essex, 300 acres in Essex County as by measures signified in a plot tested by George Morris, surveyor, dated December 1, 1668; which said 300 acres are part of a patent for 103 acres granted to Thomas Gaines, deceased, on February 12, 1665, and by the said Gaines sold to John Gregory on November 4, 1667.2 FN 2 Essex County Records, Deeds and Wills, 1716-1718, page 252. The deÂscription of the property in this deed suggests that the 300 acres hereby conveyed were the 300 acres bequeathed by Richard Gregory, of Essex County, by his will dated February 1700, to his son John Gregory (see will of Richard Gregory, ante page 243. Query: Did John Gregory die and thus this land pass to his brother Richard Gregory who now sells it to Thomas Wheeler? -- "Gregory Family of Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia," in Winston of Virginia and Allied Families, by Clayton Torrence (Richmond, Virginia: Whittet & Shepperson, 1927), p 245 ----------------------------
After Richard Gregory died in 1701, his wife Katherine married Thomas Snead the next year. When Katherine died, all her inheritance and those of her children with Thomas Bourne and Richard Gregory fell to her husband Thomas Snead. They were minors at time of writing his wil in 1700 and his death in 1701. They later had to sue Thomas Snead to spur him to make distribution of their inheritance. The ultimate fate of the three youngest, Elizabeth, John and Sarah is unknown. ------------- RICHARD 2 GREGORY (circa 1650-1701) and KATHERINE, his wife, had issue: 1. (Essex Records, Order Book, 1708-14. page 311.) 1 Richard Gregory by his will, dated February 17, 1700, bequeathed to his sons Richard and John and to his daughter Elizabeth certain lands which by their descriptions in the said will were certainly in Essex County; to his daughters Sarah and to his sons in law [step-sons]: Thomas and William Bourne he bequeathed lands which by their descriptions were at that date in King and Queen County. later King William. (See will of Richard Gregory, above). It is not positively known what eventually became of Elizabeth, John and Sarah Gregory. All four of Richard Gregory's children were under age when their father made his will in February, 1700. At Essex Court, December, 1712, John Gregory and Sarah Gregory were given liberty to choose their guardians and they thereupon made choice of William Bourne, who gave bond for his guardianship in the sum of £100 sterling (Essex County Records). For suggestions as to what may have eventually become of John, Elizabeth and Sarah Gregory, see post page 247, the discussion in the notes to the will of their brother, Richard Gregory, who died in 1725. -- Gregory Family of Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia," in Winston of Virginia and Allied Families, by Clayton Torrence (Richmond, Virginia: Whittet & Shepperson, 1927), p 243 ------------------------- -------------------------- Now as to the Moors. Richard Gregory devises to Betty Moor, a negro man named Sam; to Thomas, Richard, Mary and Sarah [Moor, children of Thomas Moor], 340 acres of 1 nd to be equally divided between them;2 and to Thomas Moor, sundry articles of perÂsonalty. In Richard Gregory's will (see ante page 246) there occurs this peculiarly worded clause: "To Thos. Bene, 2 dishes, 3 plates, a couch, one pott the biggest. To Thos Moor, a chest. To Will Bone a case of drawers. The fodder to be divided amongst 3 Broth. [brothers]." This clause would seem to signify that Thos. Bone, Thos. Moor and Wm. Bone were the "3 Broth." amongst whom the fodder was to be divided. There seems here a suggestion that Thomas Moor may have married a sister of Richard Gregory's and thus a half-sister to Thomas and William Bourne and in that way have been "brother" to all three of these men. By his will Richard Gregory makes a bequest: "to my sister." The clause is most curiously worded (see ante page 246) and we will not atempt to unravel it; but though the name of "my sister" is not given, that lady was probably the wife of Thomas Moor. -- "Gregory Family of Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia," in Winston of Virginia and Allied Families, by Clayton Torrence (Richmond, Virginia: Whittet & Shepperson, 1927), p 249 -------------------------- All these facts and references, especailly with the name of Betty Moore, would indicate that Richard's sister Elizabeth (Betty) married Thomas Moor, As the above researcher notes, the given names of the Moor children supports this relationship to names repeated in the Gregory generations. "Essex Court, March 1739, Thos. Emerson being sworn concerning the last will & testament of Richard Gregory, deceased, declared that by Tho. Rich. Mary, Sarah to whom 340 acres of land is given by the said will equally to be divided he verily believes was by the testator meant Thomas Moor, Richard Moor, Mary Moor and Sarah Moor children of Thomas Moor (Essex County Records, Order Book. 1738-1740, page 308)." -- "Gregory Family of Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia," in Winston of Virginia and Allied Families, by Clayton Torrence (Richmond, Virginia: Whittet & Shepperson, 1927), p 249 âINDEX TO MARRIAGES OF OLD RAPPAHANNOCK AND ESSEX COUNTIES, VIRGINIA 1655-1900â by Eva Eubank Wilkerson 1677 Grigory, Elizabeth, Sister of John, married Thomas Wheeler 1745 Grigory, Elizabeth, Daughter of Richard, married Thomas Moore 1726 Grigory, John, Married Jane Kidd 1702 Grigory, Katherine, widow of Richard, married Thomas Snead 1745 Grigory, Sarah, daughter of Richard married John Meador

1900 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 16 June, Civil District 17, Enumeration District 55, page 10A, Hse/Fam #171 Gregory, Andrew J Head W M Nov 1849 50 Married 22 yrs TN Unknown TN Farmer Owns Gregory, Leathy Wife W F May 1854 46 Married 22 yrs 9 children, 9 living SC SC SC Gregory, Ethel V Dau W F May 1892 8 Single TN TN SC Because ages vary so much in these censuses, for this region and this family, and because names change from census to census, it is often hard to track the same individual from census to census. Ages for children in this family jump considerably between 1900 and 1910. At least three children age 14 years in that period. Ages vary wildly in the Tennessee censuses for these Jefferson County families. Eight-year-old Ethel V in 1900 becomes 12-year-old Ola in 1910. Going by the 1930 census record for Viola below, it would seem that Ethel's middle name is Viola, which matches the record for Ola, a likely nickname. The sequence of the children is consistent to make this matchup, despite the age discrepancy. The 1900 census has the birth date as May 1892, but her brother George was born 17 Oct 1892, so that won't work. The 1900 census usually is a year off, so the real year was probably 1891. The 1930 census age of 24 would make her birth abt 1906! But the 1900 census birth date of May 1892 and age 8 is 14 years earlier! In 1920 the age reported as 21, with birth about 1899. Hilarity reigns in the censuses. 1910 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 4 May, District 8, Enumeration District 77, page 10A, Hse/Fam #150 Gregory, Jackson Head M W 55 Married 28 years TN TN TN Farm Laborer Owns Gregory, Leathy Wife F W 51 Married 28 years 9 children/9 living TN TN TN Gregory, Ola Dau F W 12 Single TN TN TN [b abt 1898] 1920 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 7 January, Civil District 8, Enumeration District 78, page 3A, Chesnut Hill Path, Hse/Fam #46 Gregory, Jack Head Owns M W 64 AL TN TN Farmer Gregory, Leath Wife F W 62 SC SC SC Gregory, Viola Dau F W 21 TN AL SC 1930 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 18 April, Civil District 8, Enumeration District 14, page 5A, Hse/Fam #91 Gregory, Andrew J Head Owns M W 78 Married at age 27 cannot read or write AL TN TN Farmer Gregory, Viola Dau F W 24 Single can read and write TN AL TN [b abt 1906!] The next problem is that while these three records appear to match, the age in 1930 is a problem. If Ola (Viola) was 12 in 1910, she should be 32 in 1930, but is reported as 24 years old! I have not found a 1920 record for the family. But if she was 24 in 1930, she should have been 4 in 1910, but there is no child that young in the 1910 census., and all 9 children are in the household. Thus I conclude the age in 1930 was an error. In 1940, she was listed again as Ola, with her age reported as 37, matching birth in about 1903.
