A Social Security record matches Francis Gregory Webb, and the birth date
matches that in her Social Security record. The memorial on Find a Grave,
however, has the year erroneously transcribed as 1916

On the SS record, her name is spelled Frances, which is normal for a woman,
and matches the name on the grave. But FAG has misspelled it as Francis, the
male spelling, but which we do we see for women on occasion in the 1800s and
early 1900s. Her SS number was issued in Ohio, which is not too far from
Tennessee.

Frances Webb
Born 8 Sep 1917
Died Mar 1974
SSN 288-30-0097 issued Ohio (1951-1952)

The SS number was issued after her marriage to Andrew Webb in 1951. So they
must have lived for some period of time in Ohio, though they were married in
Tennessee in December 1951, then later lived and died there also.

Marion of 1850 and 1870 is reported as Francis in 1880, Marion's wife in 1870
was reported as Ellen and Francis' wife in 1880 is listed as Ella. The ages
of both match. Thus we conclude his name was Francis Marion. We later found
this matches the name on his Find a Grave burial memorial.

This double name matches that of a cousin named Francis Marion Few in the
previous generation in South Carolina, whose daughter Letha Few moved to
Tennessee and married another distant cousin Andrew Jackson Gregory.

Notes for Francis R GREGORY

F R Gregory was enumerated in the 1850 census on the same page a few houses
away from Richard Henry Gregory, son of Herbert Gregory and Lucy Osborne
Thweatt. F R appears to be Richard's brother. Lucy Gregory, who is
enumerated in Richard's household, appears to be their sister. From the name
of the second son reported here, we suspect that F R's name is Francis R.

We know from Archibald's son George that Archibald's mother was Mary Elizabeth
Hatchett. In fact, her maiden name was Archibald's middle name. Lucy is
likely Richard's sister, named after their mother, Lucy Osborne Thweatt. This
is strengthened by the fact that in 1860, the only two persons in the
household are R H Gregory and Archibald Gregory.

Carolyn Cooper's genealogy reports a son of George Washington Gregory also
named George. He is matched by an 1840 census for a George Gregory in
Jefferson County, next door to a single George W Gregory and on the other side
a Few H Gregory.

Carolyn also reports a Few Hall Gregory as a sibling of George and son of
George Washington Gregory, who was reported in the 1850 census in Jefferson
County with his wife Martha. Another Few H Hall appears to be a nephew of
this Few Hall Gregory, and a son of Richard. Richard's son Few, named Few
Hugh in some genealogies, is found in Arkansas in the 1850 census.

There was a 1840 listing in military pensioners records for George Gregory age

Steve Squier reports George's father was also named George, but has not
confirmed his mother's identity. My research correlates this George's father
with George Washington Gregory, as reported by Carolyn Cooper, and his mother
with George Washington Gregory's second wife Susannah Few. It also seems to
fit that George Washington Gregory is Richard Gregory's father, but Steve
Squier has confirmed no parents for Richard Gregory. He has some doubts about
the connection of Richard and George Washington Gregory.

Note, however, that Washingtons and Gregorys are kin; George Washington's aunt
married a Gregory, then together with her husband, deeded Mt Vernon plantation
to the Washington family, and George, later President, inherited it. There is
a paucity of records for George Washington Gregory, and the identity of
George's putative wife Susannah Few is even less documented.

The records available seem to indicate that George is the son of George
Washington Gregory and the brother of Richard Gregory. There are other
siblings to be confirmed as research continues. The tax rolls and related
census records seem, at any rate, to indicate all these Gregorys of Jefferson
County and Cherokee County, Alabama, are closely related in the same lineage.

There was a legal case involving George's estate, attempting to recover a
surety bond he had paid to a Baltimore legal firm in an earlier case.
