There is a memorial in the name of John Gregory for a burial in the Gregory
Cemetery in Union County, South Carolina. However, the date son it are the
same as those that appear on the epitaph gravestone of Jehu Greogry. It
appears someone has misread the old mossy stone for Jeu and interpreted the
name as John.

Notes for Jemima GREGORY

Though initially attaching the record of birth from Connecticut found in some
other genealogies, I have had some doubts that this record is for the same
Jemima Gregory, whose father was from Pennsylvania. There is another group of
Gregorys in Connecticut that do not seem to have any connection to our primary
line here.

Notes for Jeremiah GREGORY

Family Data Collection - Births
Jeremiah Gregory
Father Issac Gregory

Birth 1760 VA

It was possibly this same Jeremiah Gregory who was a Loyalist to the British
Crown in the American Revolutionary War. In 1783, he was one of the colonists
who applied for compensation because his plantation in South Carolina was
expropriated by the Revolutionary government. The document, referred to as a
memorial, describes the land as being located at the confluence of the Broad
and Seludly [Saluda] Rivers, that is, near Columbia, South Carolina.

If this is the same Jeremiah Gregory, at that time Jeremiah would have been
about 23 years old. And according to the claim, the plantation was worth Two
thousand five hundred and forty three pounds Sterling. This seems a high
value for such a yong man to have accrued at that age. Perhaps this was an
older relative we do have information on.

But a list of "South Carolina Patriots" and the regiments they served in
includes Jeremiah Gregory.

Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution, p 386
Gregorys listed in the roster:
(The following appear to be a family, Isaac and his sons)
Isaac, militia under Capt Hughes and Col Brandon, horseman and infantry,
during 1782 and 1783
Jeremiah, militia under Capt Hughes and Col Brandon, from 1779 to 1781
alternatively
Jerrel (Jarrod), militia under Col Brandon, before and after the fall of
Charleston
Benjamin, militia under Capt Hughes and Col Brandon, from 1782 to 1783
alternatively
John, militia under Capt Hughes and Col Brandon, from 1780 to 1782
alternatively
Robert, militia under Capt Hughes and Col Brandon, from 1781 to 1782
alternatively
(These appear to be from other families)
Henry, Third Regiment, 10 February 1779 to 1 February 1780
John, Fifth Regiment, enlisted on 16 April 1776
John, Ediston Island Volunteer Militia, under Capt Joseph Jenkins and Col
Joseph Glover
Thomas, Second Dragoons under Capt Isaac Ross, Col Myddleton and Gen Sumter
and was dead about September 1781

The Loyalist Jeremiah Gregory may have been a different person. Our Jeremiah,
son of Isaac, was later living in Union District of South Carolina, where he
died in March 1833. Several family names are mentioned in his probate
documents.

Jeremiah was reported as a head of household in Union County, South Carolina
in the 1790 census, with his father on the same page and brother John on the
previous page and brother Isaac Jr two pages later. Jeremiah's brother Robert
was listed on the page before John.

Notes for Jesse Tyler GREGORY

---------------------
I believe my direct line stems from Isaac Gregory and wife Jemima, to their
son Benjamin Gregory and wife Mary Jameson, to their son Jesse Tyler Gregory
and wife Mary Argenbright, to his son Nathaniel Gregory and wife Sarah Tribby,
to Joseph Hampton Gregory and wife Lina Summers Ham, to Nathan Thomas Gregory,
my father. From Jesse forward, the lines are fairly well documented, but
Isaac and Benjamin's connections are tenuous, with very little proof. We
document herein what data we have, and the basis of our assumptions. The
tales are told as nearly in chronological order as possible, with only a few
necessary steps out of the timeline in which they occurred.

Jesse's mother was Mary Jamison. This has been much debated, but I believe
that this is accurate. One strong indication is that he gave his first son
the middle name of Jameson, Mary's maiden name. We also know that Mary had a
slave named Nancy, a dowery from her father David Jameson, and who had served
as nanny to her children. Jesse named his second daughter Nancy.

We know Mary Jameson was mother to Charlote Ann Gregory because she appears as
the bride's mother on February 20, 1815 when Charlote Ann married her husband
Lewis Templeman in Bath County, Kentucky. Charlote Ann was born, according to
several reports, in Prince William County Virginia in 1793, exact date
unspecifed. We know Mary Jamison lived in Prince William County with her
husband Benjamin Gregory, where he died in September of 1798. It is not a
huge reach to name Jesse as very likely born in Prince William County.

We believe Jesse and Charlote Ann were brother and sister, partly because
Jesse named his frstborn daughter Charlote, and partly because Mary's brother
Benjamin Jamison named a daughter Charlote.

Gregorys and Fews in Migration Patterns from the 1700s
By Orville Boyd Jenkins
Posted on Ancestry.com 16 October 2017

One factor in reconstructing a family lineage are patterns of movement and
migration. These migration paths are helpful in finding and evaluating
records in our Gregory and related Few line. We see Gregory records in a
generational pattern along the migration streams along the tidewater area or
valleys southwards and westward.

Westward
Records are being discovered in the westward line from Philadelphia through
Frederick and Hagerstown, Maryland, through what is now West Virginia, still
part of Virginia in the era we are looking at, and on to Ohio and Indiana.
Brothers John, Richard and Benjamin Gregory, thought to be sons of Isaac
Gregory of Pennsylvania, are mentioned several times in lists of residents of
old Frederick County, Virginia, a large area at the northern end of the
Shenandoah Valley, also on a common east-west migration route.

Records for a younger Richard Gregory are found in Culpeper County and
Fauquier County, Virginia, on this westward path south of the Pennsylvania
border. These two counties were established in 1749, cut out of Orange
County, the original huge area from which Frederick County was originally
established in 1743. These counties bordered Frederick County on the east.

Dates and locations of various records match a line of movement from the
residence of Richard's likely grandfather Benjamin Gregory of Pennsylvania,
into Frederick County, and later back to eastern Virginia in Prince William
County, across the Potomac from Washington, DC. This westward line of
migration connects with the great Shenandoah Valley running southwestward
along the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains in what is now West
Virginia.

Records for a Lewis Gregory, who appears to be a son of Benjamin, son of
Isaac, are found along this Shenadoah Valley route then across into the part
of Virginia that later became Kentucky, one of the areas where Fews and
Gregorys come into contact. This matches the pattern of residence and
Gregory-Few marriages in some of these areas along this southward line of
migration. Details are found in individual notes for the Fews and Gregorys.
Gregorys from this lineage moved westward a bit to the part of Virginia that
is now northern Kentucky.

Southward
Gregorys are found along the Shenandoah Valley which runs southwestward from
Hagerstown to Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee, on the border, on through Jefferson
and Cocke County, which were all one area of North Carolina, then East
Tennessee (current I-81 to I-40 to Knoxville) in the 1700s and early 1800s and
on toward Cherokee and contiguous counties in Alabama.

We find Gregorys that appear to be from two different lineages who followed
the Shenandoah or similar route from Philadelphia-Baltimore through Virginia
into Tennessee, our line through the easterly route of the named east
Tennessee counties, the other a bit more westerly, with members of both lines
in Kentucky.

These two lines seem to be connected to the same line from Pennsylvania and
northern Virginia. But there are indication of one or two separate migration
streams in the same areas. Early sources are not clear on these lines, and
similar names in what may be different lineages seem to have been confused in
some genealogies.

I have been through all these areas and explored these lines of migration so
have these in mind as I read through records and watch for connections and
clues.

Westward Ho
Gregorys in the line of James Henry Gregory and Rachel Lewis are found in
those counties of Tennessee from Jefferson-Cocke on to Knox, McMinn (where we
find both these Gregorys, with apparently no crossover), Franklin, etc, in the
westward migration route. Gregorys of our lineage also seem to have moved
northwestward through the mountain passes toward Louisville.

Fews and Gregorys are connected in the states of Virginia, Kentucky (which was
originally part of Virginia colony), North Carolina and Tennessee (which was
originally part of North Carolina Colony) in several generations. The Fews in
North Carolina apparently followed the westerly route over the Smokies into
Tennessee into Jefferson County, Tennessee, and surrounding counties where
they connected again with the Gregory lineage. We find them in the family of
Francis Marion Few from North Carolina Jefferson County, Tennessee, where his
daughter Letha married Andrew Jackson Gregory, my great great grandfather's
brother.

Crossflow
Traffic went both ways along those Midwestern routes over a period of two
centuries. Fews moved into the Louisville, Kentucky, area from Indiana
(across the Ohio River. Gregorys and Fews also moved from eastern Tennessee
into Kentucky.

Great migrations northward occurred in the 1920s and later because of
extensive floods along the Mississippi, destroying much of the Delta South.
The depression added to this exodus northward. Midwestern droughts
accelerated movement to California. Further industrialization in the next two
decades and after WWII accelerated this migration northward and westward.

The geographical indicators are not only contiguous counties, but similarly in
the counties along these common natural migration routes, which also reveal
patterns of the same family decade to decade and generation to generation.
These patterns match the same kinds of patterns we find in ethnic
investigations all over the world.

Pennsylvania & Prince William Co, Virginia, with descendants in northern
Kentucky & eastern Tennessee and the Gregory of Rappahannock or Kng William
counties has not been determined.

Early Virginia Gregory Records
Orville Boyd Jenkins

Focus on Gregorys
Three Gregorys reported to be sons of Isaac Gregory are referred to in several
county administrative documents in 1744 and later in Frederick County,
Virginia, concerning road repair. The residents required to work it include
John Gregory, Richard. Gregory and Benjamin Gregory.

The son Benjamin Gregory is reported to have been born in Pennsylvania, and
later moved to Prince William County, Virginia, across the border from the
Maryland area that would become Washington, DC, where Benjamin died in 1798.
Prince William County is a few miles to the east or southeast of Frederick
County, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley of what is now western Virginia.

The document states that the starting point of the road to be repaired was
Gregory's Ford, attesting to the early presence of Gregorys in this region.
The exact location of this place has not been determined. It does not appear
on the later map of old Frederick County by John Wood (ca 1775-1822)

A whole list of residents required to assist in the repair, including the
Gregory brothers, were all named as tenants of the "tithables" owned by Thomas
Lord Fairfax.

Frederick County
Frederick County, Virginia, was formed out of old Orange County in 1743. The
original and current county seat of current Frederick County is Winchester.
This is at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley, a major north to south
(southwest) migration route, where US Interstate Highway 81 runs today.
Winchester is on the east to west migration route from Philadelphia and
Frederick, Maryland, to the west.

A few miles north of Winchester is through Hagerstown, Maryland, where US
Interstate Highway 70 runs today through that east-west corridor. From
today's Frederick County, many people commute daily to Fairfax County,
Virginia, across the Potomac River form Washington, DC.

The county of Frederick, when it was first created in 1743 from the original
Orange County, Virginia, included a huge area:
"'Old Frederick County' encompassed all or part of four counties in
present-day Virginia - Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, and Frederick - and five in
present-day West Virginia - Hardy, Hampshire, Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan.
The Virginia Assembly named the new county for Frederick Louis, Prince of
Wales (1707-1751), the eldest son of King George II of Great Britain."
-- "Frederick County, Virginia," Wikipedia,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_County,_Virginia

The Records
Note: the word "tithables" in the following records is used approximately
equivalent to taxpayer, or land upon which the resident pays taxes in the
county. One landmark repeatedly mentioned in description of roads is
Gregory's Ford. No record has been found to definitely locate this old place
in Frederick County.

The standard format for building or maintaining a road was for all tithables
living within 10 miles of the road to work on it. One or two overseers were
appointed for each job or road section.

The header paging numbers for each entry is the original page in the original
Frederick County administrative records.

various road discussions. One reference mentions other prominent land areas
in the county.

Another edition of the above longer version of marriage records collection has
the same information as the longer record above, but has no birth place for
John Gregory. A third has John's birth place as Virginia, rather than
England. The marriage info and info for Elizabeth is the same.

Many researchers take this to be the record for John Gregory and his wife
referred to in some sources as only Elizabeth, parents of John, Richard,
Elizabeth and Mary Gregory, all of Rappahannock County, Virginia.

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900

The following record of birth for Richard Gregory matches John and Richard
known of in Rappahannock (later Essex) County, Virginia. But the birth place
reported is Caroline County, Virginia. Caroline was cut from the same area
that used to be Rappahannock, in 1727 from parts of Essex, King William and
King and Queen counties.

Other records seem to indicate a separate Gregory family in Caroline County,
but John Gregory with son Richard and other children is also independently
documented by sources on Rappahannock-Essex history (see below). Gregorys
were a large early clan in northern Virginia and southern Pennsylvania. Some
sources have no name for the wife of John Gregory of Rappahannock County.

Family Data Collection - Births

Parents John Gregory, Elizabeth Bishop

A couple of sources report another wife or another name for Elizabeth Bishop,
reporting John first married to an Elizabeth Harrison, with only one child
reported, a son named Joshua. But dates do not match with dates reported for
births in Virginia. But seems quite certain several genealogies have mixed
two or more Gregory families in England with one or more colonial families.

According to the above record, in their later years, John and Elizabeth
(Bishop) Gregory were living in Sittenbourned (Cettenbourne) Parish,
Rappahannock County.

The earliest known ancestor of the GREGORY family which lived in that portion
of the colony of VIRGINIA at that time called RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY, and which
is now (and has been since 1692) ESSEX COUNTY, was JOHN GREGORY.1 His name
first appears in the records of Rappahannock County in 1661 as a witness to
a power of attorney.2 After this date his name appears frequently as a
landowner in the county and as a witness to various transactions.

On February 20, 1663, JOHN GREGORY purchased of William Johnson and
Constance, his wife, six hundred acres of land on Hoskins Creek and
Rappahannock River, in Rappahannock County.3 In November, 1665, JOHN
GREGORY appears as a vestryman of Sittenbourne and Farnham Parishes,
Rappahannock County.4

On April 16, 1666, JOHN GREGORY conveyed, by deed, to his "son in law," Thomas

1 It is not unlikely that John Gregory who appears in Rappahannock County in
1661 was identical with John Gregory who appears in a list of tithables for
Lancaster County in 1654 Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume
V., page 162). The "identity" has not, however, been proved. Lancaster
County originally lay on both sides of Rappahannock River. In 1652
Rappahannock County was erected out of the upper part of Lancaster.

data; and the results of this search are embodied in the account of the family
here given.

the next statement indicates, he died before that time? The jury member was
likely his son John Gregory Jr.] JOHN GREGORY died between April 21 and
December 9, 1676. 5

JOHN GREGORY was father of the following children.6

1. John Gregory, of Rappahannock County. In June, 1671, he witnessed a deed
of John Prosser to John Stephens, recorded in Rappahannock County.7 In his

to him of eight head cattle on April 16, 1666 (see above).

5 This "date" for John Gregory's death is obtained thus: Robert Bishop, of
Rappahannock County, in his will, dated April 21, 1676, leaves his property to
John Gregory, Junior (see will of Robert Bishop, post page 329). On December
9, 1676, appears John Gregory, of Rappahannock County, Tanner, son and heir of
John Gregory, deceased (see post page 329). No record of the will, or
administration on the estate of John Gregory, the elder, has been discovered.

[It is not clear how these two dates in FN 5 provide a range for John
Gregory's death. It seems that Robert Bishop was kin to John Sr's wife
Elizabeth, whom many report as maiden-named Bishop or surnamed from a previous
marriage. Previous land transactions had occurred between John Gregory Sr and
Robert Bishop. Since Robert Bishop willed his property to John Gregory Jr,
rather than John Gregory Sr, it seems a likely implication that John Gregory
Sr had already passed away. We would surmise from this that John Gregory Sr
had passed away before 21 April 1676. -- OBJ]

6 John Gregory was probably married more than once. In January, 1674, the
name of his wife was Elizabeth (surname unknown). (Rappahannock Records,
Volume 1671-6, page 201). Whether she was the mother of his children is not
now known.

John Gregory, Junior (see will of Robert Bishop, post page 329). On December
9, 1676, appears John Gregory, of Rappahannock County, Tanner, son and heir of
John Gregory, deceased (see post page 329). No
record of the will, or administration on the estate of Jobn Gregory, the
elder, has been discovered.

It would seem to appear from the above will that John Gregory died unmarried
and without issue. However, the deed of gift of a heifer (see below) in
1683 from Joane Mills to John Gregory, son of John Gregory, deceased, and in
case of his death under age to his brother Robert Hamblton, raises this
question: Did John Gregory marry a widow Hamblton between the dating of his
Will, December 18, 1677, and his death, which occurred about August or
Septmber, 1678, and by his wife (so married) become the father of a child --
posthumously born -- and named John Gregory and who would thus be "brother" to
Robert Hamblton? The deed from Joane Mills is as follows:

Deed of Gift from Joane Mills, widow, to "John Gregory son of John Gregory
deceased" and heirs and assigns forever; one yellow hiefer [sic]. Unless said
John Gregory die before he becomes of age, then said cow to go to his brother
Robert Hamblton. Deed dated July 7, 1683. Recorded July 8, 1683.

RICHARD GREGORY (son of RICHARD and KATHERINE GREGORY) was born circa

On November 24, 1718, RICHARD GREGORY, of Essex County, sold to Thomas
Wheeler, of Essex, 300 acres in Essex County as by measures signified in a
plot tested by George Morris, surveyor, dated December 1, 1668; which said 300
acres are part of a patent for 103 acres granted to Thomas Gaines, deceased,
on February 12, 1665, and by the said Gaines sold to John Gregory on November
4, 1667.2

description of the property in this deed suggests that the 300 acres hereby
conveyed were the 300 acres bequeathed by Richard Gregory, of Essex County, by
his will dated February 1700, to his son John Gregory (see will of Richard

Notes for John GREGORY

After Richard Gregory died in 1701, his wife Katherine married Thomas Snead the
next year. When Katherine died, all her inheritance and those of her children
with Thomas Bourne and Richard Gregory fell to her husband Thomas Snead. They
were minors at time of writing his wil in 1700 and his death in 1701. They
later had to sue Thomas Snead to spur him to make distribution of their
inheritance. The ultimate fate of the three youngest, Elizabeth, John and
Sarah is unknown.

1 Richard Gregory by his will, dated February 17, 1700, bequeathed to his sons
Richard and John and to his daughter Elizabeth certain lands which by their
descriptions in the said will were certainly in Essex County; to his daughters
Sarah and to his sons in law [step-sons]: Thomas and William Bourne he
bequeathed lands which by their descriptions were at that date in King and
Queen County. later King William. (See will of Richard Gregory, above).
It is not positively known what eventually became of Elizabeth, John and Sarah
Gregory. All four of Richard Gregory's children were under age when their
father made his will in February, 1700. At Essex Court, December, 1712, John
Gregory and Sarah Gregory were given liberty to choose their guardians and
they thereupon made choice of William Bourne, who gave bond for his
guardianship in the sum of £100 sterling (Essex County Records). For
suggestions as to what may have eventually become of John, Elizabeth and Sarah
Gregory, see post page 247, the discussion in the notes to the will of their
brother, Richard Gregory, who died in 1725.

When John registered for the World War I draft, he spelled his name and singed
is as John Alvest Gregory. His death record spells it Alvis. The only other
record I have seen that has his full middle name is his memorial on Find a
Grave, which appears to follow his death certificate in spelling it Alvis. I
would think his own spelling might represent the original family spelling. No
birth record has been found.

Kentucky Death Certificate
John B Gregory
Birth 2 October 1847 Fleming County, Kentucky
Age 63 years
[Note that the certificate reports his birth date as 2 October 1847, but then
reports his age as 63, which would match birth in 1951. This is likely where
the recent gravestone gets the birth date as 2 October 1851, as this death
certificate transcription on Ancestry also reports. It is just as likely,
however, that it is the age that is wrong here. In the 1850 census, John,
reported as John W, was reported as 7 years old.]
Father's Name Nathan Gregory, born Kentucky
Mother's Name Unknown, Birthplace Unknown
Informant Frank Thompson, Triplett (Rowan Co), Kentucky
Death 21 April 1914 Pine Grove, Rowan County, Kentucky
Cause of death Bronchitis
Burial 22 April 1914 in Enox Graveyard [Enix-Sloan Cemetery] by John R
Thompson
Certificate #11993 filed 22 April 1914

His death certificate death date is 2 October 1847, but the 1950 census
reported him already 7 yrs old (born about 1843). The stone reported as his
in Enix cemetery, laid later by descendants for his unmarked grave, has the
birth date as 2 October 1851. Perhaps his facts have been confused with John
W Gregory, reported inteh 1860 census as the son of Jameson Gregory. We
should note that in the 1850 census, John B Gregory, son of Nathan Gregory,
was also reported as John W Gregory.

This date more closely matches John W Gregory, reported in the 1860 census as
the son of Jameson Gregory, a cousin of Nathan, also living in Rowan County.
The age reported for John W in that census would make birth about 1852,
mnatching the date on the marker reported to have been palced for John B
Gregory in Enix Cemetery. Death and bural information for John W Gregory, son
of Jameson, is not known.

Researcher Nathan Gregory suggsts these two are the same person, the son of
one brother who was raised by the other. Just why is not clear, since Jameson
Gregory did not die until 1870 and Nathan not till 1873, when John B would
have been 30, according to the birth date on his death certificate, and the
matching age in the 1850 census.

Where they lived became Rowan County in 1856.

Note the birth places reported for Charles' parents. That cannot be right,
unless John and Anna are not his parents. It should have been KY KY KY. It
looks like the enumerated just got carried away and put the same thing for him
as for his parents.

John lies in an unmarked grave. Here is the story of a grave maker laid later
my relatives.

------------------------
John B Gregory

My Aunt Aileen Gregory Richards purchased this stone sometime in the 1990's.
One early fall day My Mother Della Gregory White and I met her where the road
forks to go to Holly and She went with us. We went on Holly road turning left
on Campbell Branch until we came to Masters Cemetery Road.

We took that road to the top of the hill and on out to that cemetery. We then
took another road out to the Enix Cemetery to place this stone. I had brought
a large bucket of rock that I had picked up beside the old railroad bed. I was
driving our truck with 4wheel drive and I needed it to go out the road to the
cemetery. There were deep ditches cut in the road and it was very overgrown
with large bushes but we forged ahead.

We placed this stone in this very remote area as he was in an unmarked grave
and it was very important to us. Later my husband ask me where I had taken the
truck as it was really scratched from all the bushes and briars. The road is
much better now.

-----------------------
John Fred Walker (Walker) Gregory (6 August 1886-16 June 1968), the fourth
child of Alec and Sarah, died at his home in DeKalb. He married Flora Altha
Beulah Tanner (24 January 1895), daughter of George W. and Sarah Lou Womack
Tanner, on 17 October 1909. She still resides in DeKalb. Walker always
referred to her as Hannah, but to all others she is known as Beulah.

Walker was a farmer and was known to be a very decisive man. He was also
known to be a bit on the impatient side. This trait is exhibited by the story
of his marriage to his Hannah.

Walker and Beulah were married in the middle of the road! It seems that on
the day of their marriage, they traveled in Walker’s buggy to the home of
the minister and were told by his wife that he was assisting in the cleaning
of a nearby cemetery. Walker (then 23) intent on marrying the 14 year old
Beulah, drove to the site of the cemetery. He asked the preacher to marry
them. The minister agreed to do so as soon as the cemetery project was
complete, but Walker insisted that the ceremony be performed immediately. The
minister complied … and the two were married, standing in the middle of the
road beside Mt. Lookout Cemetery in Cherokee County, Alabama.

Walker Gregory was a Deacon and Elder at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in
Cherokee County for many years. He was a hard-working man, who bought and
paid for his 80 acre farm by cutting crossties for the railroad. He and
Beulah worked side-by-side to clear the timber from the land, using only axes.
They turned the cleared acreage into pasture and fields for planting. Before
his death, Walker divided his land between his son and daughter, preferring to
give while still living, rather than to bequeath after death. He kept one
acre and a house for himself and Beulah.

He died on Father’s Day in 1968, surrounded by his family as was his wish.
He was returned home to lie in state at the insistence of his great-grandson,
Larry Robertson. Walker was laid to rest at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, near his
parents.

Walker and Beulah had two children: Pluma Wallace and Ishmael Doyle.

Pluma Wallace Gregory 7 (28 November 1910, Cherokee, Ala.) married Gus Odus
Regan (26 July 1913, Cherokee County) at Ft. Payne, DeKalb County on 14
September 1932. Odus is the son of John Franklin and Mattie Florence Smith
Regan. Their children: Betty Joyce; and Guy Reimus.

John J E Gregory was one of the sons reported as an heir in Benjamin's will,
written 5 December 1851. No burial memorial has been found for him on Find a
Grave.

----------------------------
General Introduction

BENJAMIN J. GREGORY (12 December 1786-7 June 1853), son of Gerard and Freelove
Gregory, married Elizabeth Crosby Jeter (2 January 1794-18 May 1851), daughter
of James and Mary Crosby Jeter, on 11 June 1811. Both Elizabeth and Benjamin
were lifelong residents of Union County.

.....Beniamin's will (which is presented in full on the pages following) is an
interesting document in many ways. He willed 1547 acres of land specifically
and made reference to other acreage. There is evidence of his having bought
1262 acres during his life and having sold 808.5 acres, plus his share of the
100 acres of his parent's estate.

.....The explanation for this is fairly simple. Very often, in the early years
of our country, deeds were not even recorded until the buyer was ready to
dispose of the land. Inherited land was quite often not recorded.

.....David Sims Jeter, Elizabeth's unmarried brother, remembered his Gregory
nephews in his will and also set aside land for the Jeter Family Cemetery. He
went a step farther and provided funds for tombstones for his family members.
It is ironic that his is one of the smaller stones in the cemetery.

.....Benjamin and Elizabeth were the parents of ten known children - nine sons
and one daughter. They were: William Harrison; Aswin Starks; James Thompson;
Benjamin Franklin; John J.E.; Andrew Jackson; Argulass; Sarah Elvira; Berry J.
Adolphus; and Pickens Butler.

Will of Benjamin J Gregory

other of my children by way of tuition and she has married contrary to my
will. I desire that she shall be excluded from any portion of my estate except
such articles as are devised to her.

.....To my son, B. Franklin Gregory, I also will and bequeath one horse,
saddle and bridle with various other articles charged to my Book of Accounts
against my children.

.....The residue of my estate, both real and personal, I wish valued by three
disinterested persons, to be chosen by my executors, and to be divided into
lots and apportioned amongst my eight sons herein before named. If, however,
my said executors should think it best for the interest to be sold, they may,
after giving the usual notice, put it up at auction and sell it to the highest
bidder, dividing the proceeds as herein directed; and I hereby authorize and
empower my said executors to make, execute and deliver titles to my said
lands, the whole or any portion thereof, to such person or persons as may
comply with the terms of the sale.

.....The property herein before devised to my six first named sons has been
put into their possession by me and, in the settlement of my estate, is to be
received by them at the prices charged in this, my last Will and Testament, in
my Book of Accounts against them without interest.

.....I will and desire that my eight sons above named receive an equal share
of my whole estate and, to this end, I direct that the residue of my estate be
divided in such a way as to accomplish this object.

.....I further will and desire that the residue of my Negro property and other
personal property not herein specially disposed should be held by my said sons
for their use and benefit during their lives. It is not to be subject to their
debts or contracts, but is to descend to their lawful heirs in the manner as
is prescribed for the Negroes of B.J. Adolphus, and Pickens Butler Gregory
herein specially devised.

.....I will and desire that my sons Wm. Harrison Gregory and J. Thompson
Gregory act as my executors to this, my last Will and Testament.

.....In witness whereof I have hereinto subscribed my name and affixed my
seal, this Fifth day of December in the Year of our Lord, One thousand, eight
hundred and fifty-one; and in the Seventy-fifth Year of the Sovereignty and
Independence of the United States of America.

B.J. Gregory

Signed and Sealed, Published and Declared by the said Benjamin J. Gregory as
his last Will and Testament in the presence of each other and in the presence
of the said B.J. Gregory have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
