Notes for John Seay GREGORY

A few genealogies report the parents of Susan or Susannah Gregory and Mary John
Gregory as John Seay Gregory and Sarah (Sally) Patton. But they lack
documentation.

Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002
Sally Patton
Marriage 15 Jan 1811 Sumner County, Tennessee, USA

The following tax record might be for John Seay Gregory.

A memorial on Find a Grave seems to be the correct one for John Seay Gregory.
Note that this identifies him as John Seay Gregory II, and reports his death
in Illinois. There was no photo of the gravestone included with the joint
gravestone. Some things are confusing or vague on the note included.

The note may be identifying his wife as having the maiden name White. The
"(white)" is uncertain at best. Her maiden name is reported in the name field
as Patton, as expected from other sources. The note also seems to say the
date on his gravestone is actually unreadable, but does not say where the date
reported comes from.

Wesley appears to be Sarah's son, later known as John Wesley Gregory, stepson
of Sarah's husband Jefferson Preston Gregory. Since Sarah is reported as
single, it would appear that Wesley was born out of wedlock. No information
has been found on Wesley's biological father.

Nathan Gregory reports on Sarah's FAG memorial that she had 8 children all
together, 7 after marrying Jefferson. The first on Nathan's list of the seven
is Wesley. But in Wesley's FAG, the manager of that memorial refers to Jeff
as Welsey's step-father. This is consistent with the birth date in his SS
record above, 2 March 1878.

Census ages are not much help, as Wesley Skeans was reported in 1880 as 1 year
old, born in 1879 or so. But then again, this matches Charley Gregory,
reported in 1900 as the stepson of Jeff Gregory. In the same 1900 census
Wesley is reported as the son of Jeff, age 16, so born about 1884, a year
after Jeff and Sarah married.

This would make one think the Wesley Skeans in 1880 was named Charles Wesley
Skeans. and the Wesley Gregory in 1900 could be John Wesley or Wesley
something else. However, John Wesley Gregory's grave (grave name John W
Gregory) has his birth date as 1877, while his death certificate has the date
2 Mar 1878. This makes him match Wesley Skeans of the 1880 census.

But a simple solution presents itself. It is likely the enumerator confused
the names of Charley and Wesley and switched the names on their entries. If
we switch the names in the 1900 census, then their profiles match the other
data and records.

The census oddly reports that Manda has had two children and they are both
living. But no new children have been reported, and this is reported as
Manda's first marriage. The two reported here are the same two from the 1900
census. It appears this was an enumerator error, thoughtlessly toting up the
two reported children as Manda's. The 1900 census reported Pearl as Lida P,
age 1.

There are three other Gregory households on this same page. All four are
straight in a row. Joseph's son Truby is in Joseph's household. Joe's
brother Taylor was enumerated next door.

The other two, David and Arthur, are cousins in different branches of the
family. Davis S Gregory is the son of John J's brother Rev James Henry
Gregory. Arthur is the son of a cousin, John B Gregory, who is a son of
Nathaniel, whose father was Jesse Tyler Gregory.

Juelda was born on the family farm in 1836, married Thomas S. Stephens in
1860, and inherited a portion of the farm at her mother's death in 1872, and
lived on the farm until her death. It is still known as the "Stephens farm"
today. She is buried in the Gregory Family Cemetery with her husband. I have
spent 15 years compiling a massive research document on the Gregory family and
their friends, relatives and descendants.

There is also a DNA project and a Facebook Group tied to the research project.
We would love connect with more members of the extended family and expand the
project. Contact the author at wa4otj@gmail.com for more information.

Notes for Julia A GREGORY

The 1850 Census reports Julia as 1 year old, which would indicate she had
already passed her first birthday. The 1860 census reports her age as 12,
which would indicate the birth year was possibly 1848. In 1870, the census
reports her as age 21, which would correlate with 1849.

1850 Federal Census, Cherokee County, Alabama, 7 February 1851 [sic],
District 26, page 118, Hse/Fam 821
Henry Gregory 25 M Farmer born Tenn Cannot read and write
Rachel Gregory 21 F born Tenn Cannot read and write
Julia Gregory 1 F born Ala

When using only the year number with no month, there could be an age
difference of up to two calendar years, depending on the date of the birth and
the date of the census. I have reported the birth year as 1849 and the year
of marriage of her parents as 1848. One or both could be one year earlier.

The 1850 Census reports Julia born in Alabama, but the 1860 Census reports her
born in Tennessee, though the other children were born in Alabama.

Henry and Rachel were married in Tennessee, so it is possible the first child,
Julia, was born there, before the family moved to Alabama. the last child,
William, was also born in Tennessee. But there are many errors and
discrepancies on the Tennessee censuses over the 1800s. The censuses thus
drop in authoritativeness. On these Gregorys, however, we have few resources
for information.
