Notes for Malinda GREGORY

Malinda Gregory
Samuel Rogers
Marriage Bond signed 11 January 1849 in Bath County, Kentucky, USA, by Samuel
Rogers and James Suddath

Marriage date not announced in this bond record

The following censuses appear to be for our Malinda Gregory, daughter of Jesse
Tyler Greogry and Mary Argenbright. But she is liste din both years as
Verlinda. Other records and genealogies list her as Malinda, as in her
marriage record above.

Rodgers, James 68 M W born Kentucky Deaf & Blind Cannot read or write [b abt

Many genealogies report she died in 1896, but none has any record or other
documentation. One or two suspiciously have the very dame date ofd death for
one of Malinda's sisters. No record has been found for her death or burial.
But Mary died some time before the 1880 census. That census reports Samuel as
a widower, living in Kansas in the household of their daughter Mary and her
huaband William Rose.

County, Tennessee. The Gregorys and Lewises orignally came from Virginia.
They lived some while also in Cherokee County, Alabama, where Malinda was
born. Other members of this Gregory family in two or three generations were
back and forth between these two counties. Some moved on westward. Her
parents' burials have not been found, but are thought to have been on the
Gregory farm near Dandridge:

Malinda's name on her gravestone is Malinda Frances. This is a very unusual
spelling for the surname, which is normally Francis. The family surname is
actually France, as it correctly appears on her death record. But on
Malinda's marriage license, the clerk wrote her fiance's name as Francis, also
writing his first name as Williams, instead of William, but abbreviated on
subsequent references as the normal Wm.

Their daughter's name was known by the surname France, as found on her FAG
memorial, where the name is Ida France Dockery. That memorial reports Ida's
parentage.

"Martha married General John Pegram, of Dinwiddle County, and had five sons,
James West Pegram and four others, and several daughters.

"Richard Gregory married, secondly, Elizabeth Wilkinson, daughter of Colonel
Nathaniel Wilkinson, of Henrico County, by whom he had William W. Gregory,

GREGORY FAMILY of KING WILLIAM COUNTY VIRGINIA

Richard Gregory (1758-1844), son of Roger and Mary C. (Claiborne) Gregory and
grandson of Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory, wrote into his family Bible the
following account of his ancestry:1

"Memo. There were two sisters named Mary Cole and Jane Cole. Mary married a
Mr. West, a lineal descendant of Lord Delaware, by whom she had two sons, John
and Thomas West. After the death of Mr. West Mary married Ferdinando Leigh,
by whom she had a son and daughter, viz.: WiIliam and Mary. William Leigh
married a Miss Watkins, of Chesterfield,

[page 255]

by whom she had Benjamin Watkins Leigh and several daughters. Jane Cole, the
other sister, married Colonel Nathaniel Claiborne, by whom she had two sons,
viz.: Thomas and William, and five daughters. viz.: Mary Cole and others.
Mary Cole [Claiborne] married Roger Gregory, by whom she had Richard Gregory
and five other sons and a daughter.1 Jane Claiborne then married Stephen
Bingham, by whom she had a son named Roscoe Cole Bingham. After the death of
Bingham she married a Colonel Francis West.

Roger Gregory (my father) was the son of Richard Gregory and a Miss West, the
sister of Colonel Francis West, by whom she had three sons -- viz.: Roger,
Richard and West Gregory -- and several daughters.

Roger Gregory (my father) married Mary Cole Claiborne, by whom she had RIchard
and four other sons, as above stated. Richard married the widow of William
Broadnax and daughter of Colonel Seth Ward, by whom she [sic] had four
children, viz.: Martha Ward, Richard, Maria and Seth. Martha married General
John Pegram, of Dinwiddie, by whom she had five sons -- James West Pegram and
four others -- and several daughters.

After the death of Mary Broadnax, a daughter of Colonel Seth Ward, Richard
Gregory married Elizabeth Wilkinson, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel Wilkinson,
of Henrico, by whom he had Dr. William W. Gregory and four other sons and six
daughters. Dr. William W. Gregory married Elizabeth R. Taylor, daughter of
Thomas Taylor, of Richmond, by whom he has three sons at this time (June,
1843), viz.: Thomas, Richard and William. The above is correct from the best
information I can obtain and recollect.
RICHARD GREGORY.

"N.B. I expect my grandmother Gregory was either the daughter or
granddaughter of Lord Delaware, who was named West."2

The accounts quoted above states that Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory "had
three sons and several daughters." The three sons are named as: (1) Roger
Gregory (born May 1, 1729; died October 2, 1803), of whom we have a full
account; (2) Richard Gregory, and (3) West Gregory (who, with others, was a
sponsor at the baptism of Richard Gregory [son of Roger and Mary Cole (
Claiborne) Gregory], February 2, 1758).

1 This account of his family by Richard Gregory (1758-1844} is taken from the
Richmond Standard, Volume II., No.4, September 27, 1879. These data were
communicated to the Standard with the following note: "Responding to the
request in the 'Notes and Queries' Column of The Standard for information
relative to the West family, I send a copy of a transcript which I made from
the family Bible of my brother-in-law, Dr. William W. Gregory, of Charlotte,
North Carolina, when I was at his house in the year 1869. The Bible in which
the record is contained is a quarto volume entitled 'The Self-Interpreting
Bible (&c.].' By the late Rev. John Brown, Minister of the Gospel at
Haddington. New York. 1806: and in it is written: "RICHARD GREGORY'S BOOK.

Notes for Maria Alice GREGORY

Alice's father died in 1877 and her mother was reported as the head of the
household in the 1880 census. The enumerator listed Maria Alice here as
Margret.

Her sister Dacre's obituary in 1953 reported her as Alice Duvall of Keswick,
Virginia. Her marriage record reports M A Gregory, age 22 (born abt 1868)
married J B Duvall in 1890. This age matches the 1870 census report for the
name Meriah (meant to be Mariah, or Maria?), age 2.

The record of John Basford Duvall, in a book about the colonial families of
Virgina, reports his wife as Maria Alice Gregory, uniting the two names we
have seen and the initials in the marriage record.

It is interesting that her sister Dacre Gregory Farrar's obituary also reports
a surviving sister named Mary, one Mary Cole Lyons of St Paul, Minnesota.
This is only somewhat odd, because Mary and Maria are two forms of the same
name. Perhaps the family at times called her Mary in place of Maria.

In 1850, Martha was living in the household of her sister Priscilla Gregory
Webb in Cherokee County, Alabama, where other members of the Gregory family
had moved in the last ten years or so. From the birth states of the children
in the Webb household, it appears that James and Priscilla moved from
Tennessee to Alabama about 1839 or 1840.

The entry of her name actually looks like Jamie. Thus it would seem that
Janie was intended for the name in 1930. The writing is not smooth or
consistent. The closest match to this name would be the initial J in Martha
J's name in 1900 and 1910. Knowing the naming patterns, I would take that to
be Martha Jane. The age in 1930 produces a 14-year range of ages for Martha
Jane, from the 1900 reported birth in 1890 to the 1930 age yielding a birth
year of 1906. The primary name is clarified in the 1940 census, being clearly
written as Janie. This is her middle name.

Janie's mother died in March 1930. Her father died in November 1936. In the
1940 census, Janie is enumerated with her older brother Arthur and younger
sister Viola. All were still single.
