Notes for Mildred GREGORY

"Roger Gregory. Son of Richard Gregory (i). Born about 1690; died prior to
1732. Married Mildred, daughter of Lawrence Washington. On the 17th of May,
1736, Roger Gregory and Mildred, his wife, deeded the Mt. Vernon estate to
Augustine Washington. They were then residents of Stratton Major Parish, King
and Queen County. The witnesses were William Aylett, John Washington, and
Lawrence Butler.

Issue: Frances, who married, September 3, 1736, Francis Thornton (see Thornton
Excursus); Mildred, who married, October 28, 1740, John Thornton, and
Elizabeth, who married four times:
first, April 29, 1743, Henry Willis, son of Colonel Henry Willis (who had
married her mother);
second, Reuben Thornton;
third, Doctor Thomas Walker, the Explorer, and
fourth, Colonel Alcock, of the British Army.
Mildred Gregory, the elder, was the godmother of General George Washington."

In January 1905, Minnie Gregory's marriage license reported her age as 24
years old. This would mean she was born some time in 1881, as early as
February. But her sister Alvenie's grave reports her sbirth date as 24 October
1881.  Her ister Molly L was reported as 2 years old in the June 1880 census;

The 1900 census reported Minnie's birth date as August 1879, but she not
reported in the 1880 census. the birth dates in the 1900 census are
notoriously incorect. and often we find the date of birth on someone's grave
differs from that on a birth record. No birth record has been found for
Minnie E Gregory.

Robert died after the 1930 census. It appears from the 1940 census records
that W R Hodges died before the 1940 census. In that census, Minnie is
reported as head of her houshold, with three of her children in her home. She
was initially designated as Married, by the M was crossed through. But no W
or other designation was added. It appears she was a widow.

Note also her age reported her would make her birth in about 1877, while her
age in her marriage record makes it about 1881.

Several genealogies have identified this Minnie Greogry with another
individual of the sme name in Kentucky, with a death record in Whitley County,
Kentucky. I can find no evidence of a relation between this Minnie Gregory
and ours in Arkansas. The Kentucky Minnie Gregory was for a Minnie F Philpot,
wife of William H Gregory.

There is no evidence of any reason Minnie would have been moving to Kentucky,
where her family has no known connections except in previous generations in
another branch of this broader Gregory lineage. Her Arkansas ancestor Few H
Gregory moved from Virginia to Tennessee, then on to Arkansas..

M L (Molly in other sources) from the 1880 census does not appear in the 1900
census. The daughter Minnie E appears in the order of birth where Molly was
in 1880, but Minnie's birth date is reported as August 1879. So where was she
in 1880. Minnie's age in 1905, on her mariage record, was reported as 24,
meaning she was born in February 1881 or later, some time before January 1882.

Minnie's birth in February 1881 is also problematic, since her sister
Alvenie's grave reports Alvenie was born on 24 October 1881. We don't have an
exact day of birth for Minnie, and it would be technically possible for a
child to be born in early February and another in later October, but this is
unlikely. Birth dates in the 1900 census often present problems like this.
We also find that reproted ages and birth dates varied through a person's life
in that era. The grave date is often off by one or two years form the
recorded birth record. But we do not have Minnie's birth record.

The following newspaper article from 1910 refers to Molly L Gregory Grimsley.
Molly's husband died in 1910. The article states that "Mrs Grimsley" returned
to Texarkana. The paper is in Batesville, Arkansas, where this orphans home
was located . Batesville is in the opposite corner of Arkansas, about 235
miles from Texarkana.

"NOT A HOME FOR WIDOWS. J B Watson and Mrs Grimsley, also two of the children
they brought here Tuesday morning, to enter the Masonic Home, returned to
Texarkana last night. The Masonic Home here has generally become known as the
Masonic Widows' and Orphans [sic] Home, but the superintendent wishes us to
call attention to the fact that the institution is not a widows home, but a
home for children. ... The superintendent requests that the people, when
speaking of the home, to call it the Masonic Home, instead of the Maasonic
Widows' and Orphans' Home."

Mahala's parents are living about three houses away and were enumerated on the
same page. A few houses farther down, on the next page, are two Rice
households. Anfield Gregory married a Rice when she was widowed.

Mahala died about 1853. Nathaniel remarried in 1856, to Sarah Tribby, a
22-year-old single woman. Interestingly, their marriage record reports Nat's
birth place as Tennessee. Members of this family did live in Tennessee. But
other records and family information indicate that Nat was born in Kentucky.

Death 1873 Fleming County, Kentucky, USA

My Great Grandfather Nathaniel Gregory was born, I believe, in Casey County Ky
in 1823, and lived in Bath and then Fleming, dying there in 1873 at the age of
50. Some say he was poisoned, but the big Cholera epidemic of 1873 was more
likely the cause. I am 99% certain he was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, in
an unmarked grave, very near to where Thomas Leonard Porter's stone is
located, despite a lack of satisfactory documentary support. - Nathan Gregory,
