Priscilla died in 1869. Simpson and Priscilla had only the one child,
Eugenia. In the 1870 census, Eugenia, the firstborn, is in her father's
household at age 25. The three youngest children, born since 1860, are in the
home. Simpson remarried soon after Priscilla died, since he has another wife
in the August 1870 census, named simpley F P. Other records tell us she is
Frances.

Notes for Wayne Laray GREGORY

----------------
Hoyt Gregory (born 2-7-1908) was the son of Tom and Fannie Gregory. Esther
(born 5-16-1909) was the daughter of Sam and Evie Harris. The Harris family
lived in Pikes Peak in 1919. Hoyt married Esther Laura and they lived in See
Chapel, just east of his parents.

They moved from there to the Pikes Peak community in 1941. They bought Les
Sinclair's farm which was located 1 3/4 miles north of the school, west side
of the road on Crazy Creek.

The ages of the children at that time were: Wayne Laray "Jack" 12, Obreta
Vaun 9 and Roena Marie almost 3 years old. Roena was named for their teacher,
Roena (Jones) House from See Chapel.

Notes for West GREGORY

We have estimated West's birth at about 1725, but that might be too early. One
otherwise unidentified record for a West Gregory reports birth in 1730. This
is possible, as Roger Gregory is reported to have been born about 1729. Roger
ts the first child listed in the below source, compiled in 1927, in Winston of
Virginia and Allied Families, which reports no birth date for most of the
children, but lists Roger first, ans West third. But the reported mother of
these chidlren, Agnes West, wife fo Richard Gregory (b 1695), died in 1733.

Notes for Wiley G GREGORY

There is a one-year discrepancy in the birth date for Wiley Gregory. The
gravestone in Green Hill Cemetery gives the year 1898. Loretta Gregory Gay
reports the year from family sources as 1897. I have followed Loretta, who
has done Gregory family research on the ground from family sources and graves
for decades.

The Social Security Death Index also reports the birth year as 1897. Loretta
declares this is an error in the cutting of the gravestone. His WWI Draft
registration also has the year 1898. I would think this date was dictated by
Wiley, and he signed the registration form, so this date might be given
greater weight than the date from other sources.

He was listed as Wiley G in sources, and this appears on his gravestone, but
family sources indicate he never had any middle name or initial. Most of his
siblings had only one name, though some added a middle initial G.
-- Loretta Gregory Gay, personal communication

His WWI Draft Registration card appears to have a faded G as a middle initial,
appearing to have been erased.

Wiley appears in the 1900 census with his family in Chickasaw Nation. Wiley
was born in 1897 in McKinney, Collin County, Texas, where the family had moved
from Tennessee after 1893. So they made another move not long after Wiley's
birth. We do not know the exact date of the move from north Texas across the
Red River into southern Chickasaw Nation.

after they moved to Texas some time after 1893, when Lucy was born in

Notes for William GREGORY

The child William from Carolyn Cooper's genealogy has no dates, but cannot be
accounted for in the 1940 census of children of Richard Gregory. We are
identifying William with the otherwise unidentified male, born between 1806
and 1810, to assist search and correlation in reconstructing this Gregory
lineage. This otherwise unidentified son of Richard Gregory is reported in
the following analysis of the 1910 and 1930 censuses by Steve Squier.

-----------------------
1810 Fauquier Co., VA
male 26-44 = Richard Gregory
female 26-44 = Lucretia Jones
female <10 = Sarah Ann Gregory (b. ~1807 VA)
male <10 = an unidentified son (b. 1801-1810)
female <45 = an elderly relative
female <45 = an elderly relative

1830 Jefferson Co., TN
male 40-49 = Richard Gregory
female 40-49 = Dorcas Fishback
[note that Sarah Ann is out of the household, having been married the previous
February]
male 20-29 = unidentified son (b. 1801-1810)
male 15-19 = Few H. Gregory (b. ~1813 VA)
male 10-14 = Phillip Gregory (b. ~1817 VA)
female 10-14 = Lucretia Gregory (b. ~1819 TN)
female 5-9 = Mary Jane Gregory (b. ~1820 TN)
female 5-9 = Susan Gregory (b. ~1821 TN)
male 5-9 = James Henry Gregory (b. Apr 1826 TN)
male 60-69 = an elderly relative
female 60-69 = an elderly relative
-- Steve Squier, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 23 August 2017
-----------------------

Carolyn Cooper reported on the children of Richard and Dorcas Gregory in her
Cooper genealogy. She provides several names of children but no details. One
of Phillip Gregory's brothers was named James, according to the Cooper
genealogy, who fits an identification with our James Henry Gregory of Cherokee
County, Alabama, and Jefferson County, Tennessee.

No date of birth was known for any child except Phillip. Two brothers bore
names also common in James Henry's Gregory family, William and George. This
family was added to the genealogy to facilitate searching and location of
other records for these individuals.

Because the details are missing from so many of these, this genealogy has to
be considered a low credibility source. The names proposed do, however,
provide clues to possibilities, but could not be clearly identified. Other
connections for Phillip were pursued by another Gregory researcher, Steve
Squier. Steve contacted me with some other Gregory families he had found
living in areas of Cherokee County, Alabama, and Jefferson County, Tennessee,
where James Henry Gregory and Rachel Lewis had lived.

No child matching William appears in the 1840 census. All reported children
reported there are accounted for by documented names we know. Carolyn
Cooper's son of Richard named William above could be the unidentified son in
the 1810 and 1830 censuses for Richard Gregory. If so he would have been born
in 1808 or 1809. Richard Gregory married Lucretia Jones in 1806. Their first
child, Sarah Ann, was born in about 1807.

Our thanks to Steve Squier also for his analysis of the 1840 census listing
for the household of Richard Gregory.

Thanks to the research of Steve Squier, who discovered the probate records of
William Gregory, whose estate was administered by his father Richard. At this
point I also express appreciation to Ancestry.com for their continuing

Additional information was found in June 2019 on William's probate by Gregory
descendant and research Erin M L, who referred me to a Tennessee Supreme Court
case concerning William's estate. His father Richard was appointed
administrator of his estate, and records of estate sales are found in the
probate records, providing helpful names of family members and neighbors.
Richard died before the estate was settled, though the date has not been
found. The information in the probate records and the court case gave clues
to fill out the family configurations, especially with regard to spouses of
the daughters. Other records already in hand or new one found could then be
correlated and attached.

William was apparently married only a short time before he died, and it
appears he and his with Mary Jane had only one child, Darthula (found in some
record transcriptions as Dorthula). Darthula is a popular name in the Gregory
and related families, like Hance and Strange.

William's wife Mary Ann and her subsequent husband later sued William's

Jefferson County, Tennessee

Fraud

Defendant's name is Benjamin F Ward. William Gregory died owning land on
south side of French Broad River, leaving plaintiff Mary Ann (who later
married Andrew) as his widow. Richard Gregory, deceased, administered
William's estate but never assigned dower to Mary Ann, so Plaintiffs now claim
dower out of that land. William & Mary Ann had 1 child, Defendant Dorthula.
At time of suit, both parties lived on the land at issue. Plaintiffs claim
Defendants are trying to cheat & defraud them out of Mary Ann's dower.

Notes for William GREGORY

-----------------------
GREGORY FAMILY of KING WILLIAM COUNTY VIRGINIA

Richard Gregory (1758-1844), son of Roger and Mary C. (Claiborne) Gregory and
grandson of Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory, wrote into his family Bible the
following account of his ancestry:1

"Memo. There were two sisters named Mary Cole and Jane Cole. Mary married a
Mr. West, a lineal descendant of Lord Delaware, by whom she had two sons, John
and Thomas West. After the death of Mr. West Mary married Ferdinando Leigh,
by whom she had a son and daughter, viz.: WiIliam and Mary. William Leigh
married a Miss Watkins, of Chesterfield,

[page 255]

by whom she had Benjamin Watkins Leigh and several daughters. Jane Cole, the
other sister, married Colonel Nathaniel Claiborne, by whom she had two sons,
viz.: Thomas and William, and five daughters. viz.: Mary Cole and others.
Mary Cole [Claiborne] married Roger Gregory, by whom she had Richard Gregory
and five other sons and a daughter.1 Jane Claiborne then married Stephen
Bingham, by whom she had a son named Roscoe Cole Bingham. After the death of
Bingham she married a Colonel Francis West.

Roger Gregory (my father) was the son of Richard Gregory and a Miss West, the
sister of Colonel Francis West, by whom she had three sons -- viz.: Roger,
Richard and West Gregory -- and several daughters.

Roger Gregory (my father) married Mary Cole Claiborne, by whom she had RIchard
and four other sons, as above stated. Richard married the widow of William
Broadnax and daughter of Colonel Seth Ward, by whom she [sic] had four
children, viz.: Martha Ward, Richard, Maria and Seth. Martha married General
John Pegram, of Dinwiddie, by whom she had five sons -- James West Pegram and
four others -- and several daughters.

After the death of Mary Broadnax, a daughter of Colonel Seth Ward, Richard
Gregory married Elizabeth Wilkinson, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel Wilkinson,
of Henrico, by whom he had Dr. William W. Gregory and four other sons and six
daughters. Dr. William W. Gregory married Elizabeth R. Taylor, daughter of
Thomas Taylor, of Richmond, by whom he has three sons at this time (June,
1843), viz.: Thomas, Richard and William. The above is correct from the best
information I can obtain and recollect.
RICHARD GRECORY.

"N.B. I expect my grandmother Gregory was either the daughter or
granddaughter of Lord Delaware, who was named West."2

The accounts quoted above states that Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory "had
three sons and several daughters." The three sons are named as: (1) Roger
Gregory (born May 1, 1729; died October 2, 1803), of whom we have a full
account; (2) Richard Gregory, and (3) West Gregory (who, with others, was a
sponsor at the baptism of Richard Gregory [son of Roger and Mary Cole (
Claiborne) Gregory], February 2, 1758).

request in the 'Notes and Queries' Column of The Standard for information
relative to the West family, I send a copy of a transcript which I made from
the family Bible of my brother-in-law, Dr. William W. Gregory, of Charlotte,
North Carolina, when I was at his house in the year 1869. The Bible in which
the record is contained is a quarto volume entitled 'The Self-Interprrting

Whose body reposes near this of his beloved wife.
Cheerfulness, the result of innocence, always sparkled in her

good will. Her husband enjoyed in her a dutiful wife; her
children an indulgent mother; her servants a gentle mistress,
and her acquaintances a faithful friend.

Rest here oppressed by pale disease no more,
Here find that calm thou sought so oft before.
Rest undisturbed beneath this humble shrine,
Angels awake thee with a voice like thine.

In searching for records to document this individual, the first found was a
WWI draft registration record in the full name Bryant Wilkins Gregory, born in
1898 as reported in the list of A J Gregory's children.. However, this
individual reported he was employed by his father, Ezell Gregory in Union
County, South Carolina. Another problem was the birthplace, reported as Union
County, South Carolina, where Bryant was still living in 1918.
But the two older children of A J and Jennie born before Bryant were reported
on FAG as born in Texas. Their younger brother would not have been born in
South Carolina, where their parents came from originally.

A quick search turned up censuses of the family of S Ezell Gregory in Santuc
division of Union County. The 1900 census reported a son named Wilkins, age
2, born in September 1998, matchnig the military record. The name should be
William Bryan Gregory, born in Texas, married Leta Townsend and Mildred (?),
died Ft Worth.

William Bryan Gregory was reported as a 15-year-old in the 1910 census.

the Find a Grave database. But she did report in notes that burial was at
Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum. We linked our new memorial for Bryan
(below) to the on e found on FAG for Leta

A probate record was ofund in Tarrant county, Texas, that matches Bryan, but
it is puzzling in presenting the date probate was opened as 2 January 1973.
He did not die until 10 February 1923 (see death certificate above). No image
was available for reference.

William Bryan Gregory
BIRTH 15 Mar 1899 Ben Hur, Limestone County, Texas
DEATH 10 Feb 1973 (aged 73) Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, USA
BURIAL Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Fort Worth, Tarrant County,
Texas,

He went by his middle name. Bryan was born in Ben Hur, Limestone County,
Texas, about 25 miles east of Waco. He was the son of Andrew Jackson Greogry
of Union County, South Carolina and Jennie Lee James of Virginia. His parents
lived in Limestone County, Texas, then moved to Erath County, Texas, while
Bryan was still living at home, and died there.

Bryan had moved to Fort Worth by 1918, when he registered for the WWI military
draft. At that time he reported his nearest relative as his mother Jennie,
whose address was Rt 6, Stephenville, Erath County, Texas.

Bryan married Leta Gladys Townsend (some records spell the name Townsen), who
was born in Lampassas County, Texas. They married about 1925, though their
marriage record has not been found. Their daughter Billie Ruth Gregory was
born in Fort Worth in September 1926.

Bryan and his first wife Leta were cremated and their ashes were buried in the
mausoleum of Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum. Bryan's ashes were buried
there 12 February 1973 by Robertson Mueller Harper Funeral and Cremation
Services of Fort Worth. For some reason the menager of Leta's memorial does
not link the memorial to Greenwood, though she mentions in the notes that
Leta's ashes were interred there.

After Leta's death in July 1960, Bryan married again to someone named Mildred.
On his death certificate, the informant is reported as his wife Mildred
Gregory.
