The passage of this manor down to John de Grey's son, Henry, and thence to his heirs gives evidence that Henry was in fact the son of John de Grey's wife, Maud de Verdun. [Douglas Richardson] * * * * * * * * * * Faris (1999, p. 375): "ELIZABETH TALBOT, daughter, it is said, was married before 3 Feb. 1379/80 to HENRY DE GREY, Knt., 5th Lord Grey, of Wilton, co. Dictionary of National Biography, Volumes 1-20, 22 John Grey Baron Ferrers of Groby Birth Date 1432 Death 17 Feb 1461 St Albans, England Father's Name Edward Grey Mother's name Elizabeth Ferrers --------------------- Sir John Grey Birth 1432 Groby, Leicestershire, England Death 1460, England Lord Ferrers of Groby of Bradgate Hall. Son of Sir Edward Grey and Elizabeth Ferrers, a strong Lancastrian family. Died leading a charge at the Battle of St. Albans against the Yorks in the War of the Roses. John left his widow Elizabeth with two small sons; Thomas and Richard Grey. The widow Elizabeth secretly married on 1 May, 1464 to York King Edward IV at her father's manor of Grafton Regis. After the death of King Edward IV, John's younger son, Richard (then 24 years old), along with his uncle Anthony Woodville were charged to guard young King Edward V. While en route in 1483 with Edward V to his coronation at London, Richard and Anthony were arrested by King Edward IV's brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who had some pretensions to the throne himself. The Duke charged them with "having estranged from him the affection of his nephew." Grey and Woodville were sent to prison at Pontefract where they were beheaded without trial. Young Prince Edward V disappeared and Richard, Duke of Gloucester, then became King of England. John and Elizabeth's older son, Thomas, managed to escape England and fled to France where he stayed until it was safe to return to England. After attending school in Memphis, Tennessee, she married John R. Trotter of Monticello, Arkansas, with whom she had five children. Three of these children and her first husband died within a few years. She remained in Emmet after the death of her second husband in 1917 until her death on September 15, 1926." -- "Emmet United Methodist Church, Emmet, Nevada County [Arkansas]," /16/2011, http://www.arkansaspreservation.com/historic-properties/_search_nomination_popup.asp?id=915 -------------------------------- I note that the Methodist history here reports that Lula was born in 1854, and lost both parents "at a young age." The 1900 census reports she was born in November 1852, making her about 2 years old when her parents died in 1854. Other informatoin indicates her mother died in 1853. I found that David Holden, a careful researcher of the McSwain family and related lineages (though he does not include his documentation in his tree), also reports she was born on 19 November 1854. Yet her two children are both enumerated in this household. And Junie (Junnie) is properly reported as Charles McSwain's step-daughter. Thus what this report indicates is that there is only one child of this marriage, though usually all children of any marriages are reported in this field of the census. Living next door is Charles' sister Hannah Josephine and her husband Robert Garland. In 1910 we find another Garland family member in Charles and Lula's home, Thomas L Garland, married to Lula's daughter Junie. 1910 Federal Census, Nevada County, Arkansas, 16 April, Emmet, District 101, page 1B, Lansburg Rd, Hse/Fam #14 McSwain, Charles D Head M W 59 2nd marriage Married 19 years MS NC NC Bank Cashier Owns McSwain, Lula Wife F W 57 2nd marriage Married 19 yrs 1 child/1 living AR VA VA McSwain, Charles D Son M W 2 OK TN TN Garland, Thomas L Son-in-Law M W 31 [no length of marriage rptd] AR TN MS Merchant, Gen Store Garland, Junie T Wife (of Son-in-Law) F W 30 [no length of marriage rptd] AR TN AR [b abt 1880] Again Lula is reported as having only 1 child (Charles D reported here), though her daughter with John Trotter is in the household. I have considered that Junie might be the daughter of John Trotter by a previous marriage, but Junie's age indicates her birth occurred about 4 years after the marriage of John and Lula. Lula's second husband, Rev Charles McSwain, died in 1917. In 1920, the census enumerates her in the home of her daughter Junie and her son-in-law Thomas L Garland.
