But no documentation is provided. This is likely correct, since he has a grandson of this same name. Most genealogies report the date of death as 14 September 1835. I found, however, that this is the date on which his will was proven. I would not have thought the will would be proven on the day of death, though perhaps it was in this case. I rather suspect that genealogies have taken the date of proof as the date of death. ------------------------------- Will proved 14 Sep 1835 18 June 1835 Elisha Grubbs of Talbot Co. I found details on Elisha C Grubbs while trying to reconstruct the family of James Richard Grubbs, father of Nova Grubbs Jenkins. James reports on his WWI registration that he was born in McLennan County, Texas. Censuses report that all James' older siblings are born in Texas. Elisha, referred to often as E C, was born in Georgia and his parents are reported in 1880 as born in South Carolina. After quite some time I made connections to earlier censuses. Elisha was born in Georgia, but his family moved to southeastern Arkansas, and they were enumerated in Drew County along with several other Grubbs households in Veazey Township. Elisha's parents were Thomas and Elizabeth, both born in Georgia. 1860 Federal Census, Drew County, Arkansas, 9 July, Veasey Township, PO Lacy, page 12, Hse/Fam #558 Thomas W Grubbs 31 M [Occup Not Stated] $1000 Real Estate #500 Personal born GA Elizabeth I Grubbs 26 F born GA Elisha C Grubbs 9 M Farm Laborer $400 Personal Estate born GA Susan A Grubbs 7 M born GA James A Grubbs 4 M born GA Mary A Grubbs 3 F born GA In the 1870 census in the same location, the parents and older children are reported born in Mississippi, whereas in 1860 all had been reported born in Georgia. There is another Elisha Grubbs from Drew County, Arkansas, whom I found first as the likely candidate for James' Grubbs father. But then I found two 1880 censuses for E C Grubbs. E C Grubbs and his wife S A were in McLennan County, Texas (Waco area), where our James Grubbs reported he was born. This tied them to James. Meanwhile Elisha C Grubbs and his wife Caroline were enumerated the same year in Drew County, Arkansas, matching earlier censuses for them there. Elisha's wife was Susan Abbie (probably Abigail) Donaldson. In 1900 an E C Grubbs was found in Indian Territory, but with a different wife, the stepmother of James Grubbs. The two family units were clarified more finally when I found a second 1900 census for Elisha Champion and his wife Caroline L Jones still in Drew County, Arkansas. 1880 Federal Census, McLennan County, Texas, 14 June, District 116, page 13 (scan 222A), Hse/Fam #110 Grubbs, E C W M 29 Head Farm Laborer GA SC SC [b abt 1851] Grubbs, S A W F 24 Wife Keeping House GA GA GA [b abt 1856] Grubbs, Elizabeth W F 1 Dau At Home TX GA AR These two Elisha Champion Grubbs were likely relatives. Notice that the census reports that Elisha and Laura have been married 7 years, making the marriage about 1993. But most of the children are older than that. From the 1910 census we learn overtly that Laura was Elisha's second wife, which is confirmed by the 1910 census. So the first wife was the mother of all the children born in Texas. I see, however, that the enumerator in 1900 has still reported the mother of all the children was born in Arkansas. The first wife S A was reported in the 1880 census as born in Georgia. It seems the enumerator has used Laura's birth state for the mother of all the children. In 1900, Elizabeth is married and she and her husband are living in her parents' household. Her name is entered as Elisith E. this could mean the name Elizabeth reported in 18890 is her middle name, making her name Elisith Elizabeth. Or the enumerator may have been in a hurry and miswrote Elizabeth as Elisith. Her husband's name is written over with the census tally formula, so is uncertain. This is an infuriating characteristic of many census pages. The first two letters of the husband's name look like Ar. No relationship designation has been entered for either Elisith Williams or her husband, except for a single S for the husband, which would likely be for Son-in-law. 1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 12 June, Township 1, District 133, page 13B, Hse #112, am #117 Grubbs, Elisha Head W M Feb 1852 48 Married 7 years GA GA GA Farmer Owns Grubbs, Laura A Wife W F Mch 1866 34 Married 7 years [mar abt 1893] 2 children/2 living AR TN AL Grubbs, Thomas A Son W M Sept 1882 [1st marriage] 18 TX GA AR Farm Laborer Grubbs, Andrew Son W M Oct 1884 [1st marriage] 15 TX GA AR Farm Laborer Grubbs, Abbie Dau W F Mch 1887 [1st marriage] 13 TX GA AR Grubbs, James R Son W M Aug 1889 [1st marriage] 10 TX GA AR Farm Laborer Grubbs, Laura J Dau W F Dec 1894 5 Ind Terr GA AR Grubbs, Bernice Dau W F Aug 1898 1 Ind Terr GA AR Williams, Arnis [?] W M July 1878 21 Married 0 years Texas Missouri Missouri Merchant, Dry Goods Rents Williams, Elisith E W F Mch 1879 21 Married 0 years Texas Missouri Kentucky The birth place of Elisith's (Elizabeth's) parents are one concern, since they do not match the reported birth places of Elisha and his first wife (both Georgia). James R Grubbs was born in McLennan County (Waco area), Texas. His family moved to Indian Territory after James was born. He is reported as age 10 in the 1900 census in Chickasaw Nation. 1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 12 June, Township 1, District 133, page 13B, Hse #112, am #117 Grubbs, Elisha Head W M Feb 1852 48 Married 7 years GA GA GA Farmer Owns Grubbs, Laura A Wife W F Mch 1866 34 Married 7 years 2 children/2 living AR TN AL Grubbs, Thomas A Son W M Sept 1882 18 TX GA AR Farm Laborer Grubbs, Andrew Son W M Oct 1884 15 TX GA AR Farm Laborer Grubbs, Abbie Dau W F Mch 1887 13 TX GA AR Grubbs, James R Son W M Aug 1889 10 TX GA AR Farm Laborer Grubbs, Laura J Dau W F Dec 1894 5 Ind Terr GA AR Grubbs, Bernice Dau W F Aug 1898 1 Ind Terr GA AR The census tells us that Elisha and Laura have been married 7 years, but all the children born in Texas were born before they would have married in 1903. One or two report that Nova is the daughter of James Warning Grubb (no S) and Mable C Christensen. Most have incomplete or missing parents' names, but attach the same 1910 and 1920 census in Kansas, shown all members of the family born in Kansas. The birth place alone is enough to disqualify this Kansas family. They are reported in censuses in Brown County, Kansas. The daughter of the Kansas family is reported in censuses as Bernie E Grubb born in Kansas, providing a pretext for carelessly adding these Kansas censuses and names to Nova Bernice Grubbs Jenkins, though they report her correctly as born in Oklahoma. -- Newlin, McKinley, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/104828/person/170269389?ssrc=&ftm=1, etal With the 1940 census report of her birth in Oklahoma, I persisted till I found a Grubbs family in the Grady-Caddo area. I found Jim and Mattie Grubbs living in the town of Tuttle on the northern border of Grady County. Jim and Mattie have a matching daughter, reported in 1920 as Nobla, 11 years old, matching her birth date in 1908. 1920 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 10 January, Tuttle, District 191, page 6A-B, Oak St, Hse/Fam #110 Grubbs, Jim Head Rents M W 30 Texas Georgia Texas Produce Salesman [abt 1890] - page 6B - Grubbs, Mattie B Wife F W 29 TX TX TX [abt 1891] Grubbs, Nobla B Dau F W 11 OK TX TX [abt 1908] Grubbs, Juanita G Dau F W 9 OK TX TX [abt 1910] Grubbs, Ellen Dau F W 6 OK TX TX [abt 1913] Tuttle is an interesting place. "Located east of the Chisholm Trail, Tuttle was developed as a farming and ranching community. The town was platted in 1901 and the land was purchased Chickasaw land from the Colbert Family. The town is named after local rancher James H. Tuttle, a Choctaw by marriage. The right-of-way for the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway came from the tribal allotment of Frances Schrock, a Choctaw. Schrock Park is named after her." -- "Tuttle, Oklahoma," Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuttle,_Oklahoma Information about the Colbert family mentioned here is found in this genealogy. The Colberts are of Chickasaw origin and are part of this genealogist's maternal family. Notice that James' wife's name is Mattie B. I found a gravestone photo in the Tuttle Cemetery on a memorial in Find a Grave that matches this. There is a Mattie Bell Grubbs, with dates that would match the wife of James Grubbs. Her grandson Asa Lee Jenkins tells me Mattie's maiden name was Barefoot. I have not found James and Mattie in the 1930 census, but in 1940 they are in Anadarko, where he is reported as a Maytage appliance Dealer. 1940 Federal Census, Caddo County, Oklahoma, 10 April, Anadarko, District 8-6, page 9A, 506 West Louisiana St, Hse #185 Owns $2800 Grubbs, J R Head F W 50 Grade 8 b Texas same place in 1935 Maytag Dealer Grubbs, Mattie Wife F W 49 Grade 8 b Okla same place in 1935 ----------------------------- Mattie Belle Grubbs Birth Dec 8, 1898 Death Apr 23, 1990 Burial Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle, Grady County, Oklahoma Maintained by Tommy Neathery, Originally Created by Janey Clark Sep 01, 2007 -- Find A Grave Memorial #21289215, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21289215 ----------------------------- The Tuttles had another child while living in Tuttle, a son named J R, who died at age 3. ----------------------- J R Grubbs Birth Dec 11, 1922 Death Feb 5, 1926 2/12/1926 Tuttle Times: The little 3 yr old son of J.R.
