The first record I find for Nellie and her husband John Gusman is the Dallas City Directory of 1927. Comparing to later census and directory records, this is surely them, but the directory has her name as Ethel, which is her mother's name. There is also an Ethel Gusman, widow of Joseph listed, and that may be a cause for the confusion also. But John's Social Security records spell his name as Gussman, rather than as in Spanish Gusman or Guzman. Perhaps he did it that was to try to prevent Anglos from mispronouncing his name as they commonly do: Gooz-man. He also uses the English form of his first name. Helen's name is spelled variously. On her death certificate she is Helen Hackelton Bisswager. Bisswanger is misspelled, and it appears Hackelton should be Hackleton. The name is spelled Hackleton by some descendants. On her license for marriage to Louis Kummell her name is spelled Hackledon. In 1880, Helen was a 3-year-old, living in a household with her widowed mother and two other widows. The configuration appears to be a mother, Pauline Shipley, with two daughters, Mary Collins and Mattie Hackleton. Mattie's two children are Joe and Helen. They are listed as a separate household, but the relationships are not familial but occupational. Pauline, though in the position of the head of a separate household, is reported as a servant, not Head. Her work is Housekeeper. The Head of the previous household (whose name is unreadable) is a Merchant. Perhaps Helen's mother, grandmother and aunt are working for this family in household #111. 1880 Federal Census, Prairie County, Arkansas, 17 June, Hazen Township, District 247, page 15, Hse/Hse #112 Shipley, Pauline W F 50 Servant Widow House Keeper TN Unstated Unstated [born abt 1830] Collins, Mary W F 34 Servant Widow Servant Unstated Unstated Unstated [born abt 1858] Hackleton, Mattie W F 31 Servant Widow Servant Unstated Unstated Unstated Hackleton, Joe W M 7 Son AR Unstated Unstated Hackleton, Helen W F 3 Dau AR Unstated Unstated Arkansas County Marriages, 1837-1957 Page 311 Groom: Louis Kummell Groom's Age 23 Groom's Estimated Birth Year 1872 Groom's Residence Carlisle, Lonoke, Arkansas Bride: Helen Hackledon Bride's Age: 19 Bride's Estimated Birth Year 1876 Bride's Residence Hazen, Prairie, Arkansas Marriage 10 Sep 1895 Lonoke County, Arkansas Marriage License Date 10 Sep 1895 The marriage probably took place in Carlisle.
