This census reports that Rachel has borne 8 children and only 4 are living.
Three of them are in this household. The fourth is Pansy, now the wife of
Thomas Sheridan Edmonds. One of the four that has died is Arra Bell, who was
Thomas Sheridan's first wife. Arra died about 1903, then Thomas married her
sister Pansy. Another child was Macdonald, reported as 9 years old in the
1900 census. This means two others died as infants or young, between the 1880
and 1900 censuses.

In 1920, Rachel is enumerated as a resident in the household of her nephew
Stanely Gurley in the same townwhip.

The information on Rachel's death certificate seems to indicate she was living
with her daughter Essie Hughes in Micaville, Yancey County, North Carolina,
when she died. Her husband, James Matthew Hall is referred to here as Dr Matt
Hall. In all the censuses he is always James M, and is always designated as a
Farmer, never a Doctor or Physician. But his najke on his gravestone is Dr
James M Hall.

Notes for John GUSMAN

The first record I find for Nellie and her husband John Gusman is the Dallas
City Directory of 1927. Comparing to later census and directory records, this
is surely them, but the directory has her name as Ethel, which is her mother's
name. There is also an Ethel Gusman, widow of Joseph listed, and that may be a
cause for the confusion also.

In the 1930 census, John's surname is spelled in a way that represents the
Spanish pronunciation. But John's Social Security records spell his name as
Gussman, rather than as in Spanish Gusman or Guzman. Perhaps he did it that
was to try to prevent Anglos from mispronouncing his name as they commonly do:
Gooz-man. He also uses the English form of his first name. The following
record appears to be for the right John Gusman.

Notes for Helen HACKLETON

Helen's name is spelled variously. On her death certificate she is Helen
Hackelton Bisswager. Bisswanger is misspelled, and it appears Hackelton
should be Hackleton. The name is spelled Hackleton by some descendants. On
her license for marriage to Louis Kummell her name is spelled Hackledon.

In 1880, Helen was a 3-year-old, living in a household with her widowed mother
and two other widows. The configuration appears to be a mother, Pauline
Shipley, with two daughters, Mary Collins and Mattie Hackleton. Mattie's two
children are Joe and Helen. They are listed as a separate household, but the
relationships are not familial but occupational. Pauline, though in the
position of the head of a separate household, is reported as a servant, not
Head. Her work is Housekeeper.

The Head of the previous household (whose name is unreadable) is a Merchant.
Perhaps Helen's mother, grandmother and aunt are working for this family in
household #111.

Joseph D Hackney

Joseph D Hackney was born in North Carolina in 1836, and is the son of James
and Keziah (Davis) Hackney, both natives of the same State. They came to
Tennessee in 1836, and soon afterward located in this county. The father was a
farmer, and himself and wife were the parents of three children, one of whom
is dead. The father died in May, 1864, and his wife five years earlier. Joseph
D. grew to mature years on a farm, and has since followed farming as an
occupation. The drug business, in which he once engaged, was soon abandoned.
In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army, and served in the quartermaster's
department until the cessation of hostilities, reaching home in May, 1865.

In 1855 [actual date on marriage record is 12 Nov 1852; marriage was in
Hardeman County TN] he married Malinda Pirtle, who was born in 1834 [grave
date is 20 Jan 1831] and died in 1879 [grave date is 07 Dec 1878]. In 1880 he
married Mrs. Mary (Fogg) Barnett, widow of S. A. Barnett. By her first husband
she had two children, one of whom, Hattie, is yet living. Mrs. Hackney was
born in 1839, and is the daughter of Joseph and Eliza (Madden) Fogg. Her
father is a native of Virginia, and came to Tennessee when seventeen years of
age. He was twice married, and is the father of thirteen children, three of
his boys serving in the Confederate service. Mr. Hackney is a Democrat, and
was a useful citizen.
