On his son Cleveland's death certificate the father's name is given as Mathew Hall. On the death certificate of his wife Rachel Gurley Hall, she is reported as the widow of Dr Matt Hall. These two records confirm references in family sources to his middle name as Matthew. James' gravestone also has his name as Dr James M Hall. Comments on a Find-a-Grave memorial for his son John Anderson Hall also refer to him as Dr Matthew Hall. James' occupation is reported in all the censuses as Farmer. His death certificate reports his occupation as "Doctor (Practical)." A complication in his name is introduced with the death certificate, which names him James Madison Hall. Some genealogies have Madison as James' middle name. He was not under the care of a physician (the certificate states "No Physician") at the time of his death. This is the only document on which I have seen the name as James Madison. His memorial on Find a Grave uses this name from the death certificate. The informant on the death certificate was his wife Rachel. It appears the certificate was filled out by the Registrar. Could Rachel have given him this name, or might the Registrar have misunderstood or miswritten the name? This is the only instance I have seen this name in public records. 1870 Federal Census, Yancey County, North Carolina, 16 July, South Toe Township, PO not stated, page 2, Hse/Fam #8 Hall, J M 35 M W Farmer $150 Real Estate $200 Personal b NC Cannot read or write Hall, Juda 33 F W Keeping House b NC Cannot read or write Hall [Robertson], Elizabeth 63 F W At Home b NC Cannot read or write Hall, Cornelius 17 M W At Home b NC Cannot read or write Hall, Malinda M 14 F W At Home b NC Cannot read or write Hall, Ann Eliza 12 F W At Home b NC Hall, James G 10 M W At Home b NC Hall, Margaret L 8 F W b NC Hall, Amanda 5 F W b NC Hall, William P 2 M W b NC Hall, John A 2mos b May M W b NC Malinda M here is the same as Mary M in 1860, so likely her name was Mary Malinda. 1880 Federal Census, Yancey County, North Carolina, 9 June, Crabtree Township, District 238, page 11 (scan 587C), Hse #67, Fam #68 Hall, James M W M 42 Farmer NC NC NC Hall, Rachael W F 22 Wife Keeping House NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Cornealas [Cornelius] W M 27 Son Works on Farm NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Ann W F 24 Dau Domestic Work NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Goodson W M 21 Son Works on Farm NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Louiza W F 18 Dau Works on Farm NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Amanda W F 16 Dau NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Preston W M 14 Son NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, John W M 14 Son NC NC NC Cannot read or write [John has gained 14 yrs since 1870] Hall, Delfina W F 10 Dau NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Joseph W M 7 Son NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Zeph W M 5 Son NC NC NC Cannot read or write Hall, Miles W M 4 Son NC NC NC Cannot read or write Roberson [Robertson], Elizabeth W F 72 Mother-in-Law NC NC NC Cannot read or write Goodson matches James G; Preston is William P; Louiza matches Margaret L of 1870. Rachel is James' wife in both the 1880 census and the 1900 census. One child not showing up on either of these censuses is Ara (or Arra) Bell. Her birth record has not been found but we have two other consistent reports of her birth. She was born, grew up, and married between these two censuses. Ara Bell Hall was not born until Dec 1880, according to the 1900 census record of Ara as the wife of Thomas Edmonds. See above. Judith died between 1876 (last child) and 1879 (marriage to 2nd wife), and James married Rachel in 1879 or early 1880. Evidence thus indicates that Arrie was the daughter of Rachel Gurley Halll, not Judie Robertson Hall. Suzie Cruz was finally able to confirm this with one of her aunts in March 2014. Thanks to Suzy for this good work and clarification! "Ara Belle Hall Edmonds is a full sister to my grandmother Pansy Mae Hall Edmonds. I finally spoke to one of my aunts, Pansy's youngest living daughter, today and she confirmed that Ara and Pansy are full sisters." -- Suzy Crews, Facebook Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 29 March 2014 In the 1900 census Ara Bell is reported as the wife of Thomas Edmonds and her birth date is reported as Dec 1880. Their record of marriage reports she was 18 years old when they married in 1898, making it about 1880. This also confirms that Rachael was her mother. In the 1910 census, Lena's family is enumerated by the name Hensley. Other records presented by genealogies from Tennessee indicate Hensley was the original name. The family was reported under the name of Hensley in 1910. But the name changed to Hall in the 1920 census, and all the records hereon out for Lena are Lena Hall. 1910 Federal Census, Hickman County, Tennessee, 2 May, DeWitt, District 40, Page 16A, Hse/Fam #249 Hensley, Robt L Head M W 40 Married 13 yrs TN TN TN Saw Mill Laborer Owns [b abt 1870] Hensley, Sallie H Wife M W 37 Married 13 yrs 5 children/5 living TN TN TN [b abt 1873] Hensley, Flora E Dau M W 12 Single TN TN TN [b abt 1898] Hensley, Lou E Dau M W 10 Single TN TN TN [b abt 1900] Hensley, Dove L Dau M W 7 Single TN TN TN [b abt 1903] Hensley, Roosevelt M W 4 Single TN TN TN [b abt 1906] Hensley, Lena R Dau M W 1yr5mos Single AR IL IN [b abt Dec 1908] Hensley, Lou V Dau M W 67 Widow TN US US [b abt 1843] 1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 5 February, DeWitt, District 12, page 17A, North Main St, Hse #261, Fam #377 Hall, Robert M Head Rents F W 52 Married TN TN TN Laborer Hall, Rebecca Wife F W 17 Married AR AR AR Hall, Luella Dau F W 18 Single AR TN TN Cook, Private Family Hall, Dovie Dau F W 17 Single AR TN TN Cook, Private Family Hall, Rozie Son M W 14 Single AR TN TN Hall, Lena Dau F W 11 Single AR TN TN Hall, Vida P Dau F W 10mos Single AR TN AR Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957 Lena Hall Age 18, Birth Year abt 1906 Residence De Witt, Arkansas, Arkansas Spouse's Name Tim Poston Spouse's Age 21 Spouse's Residence De Witt, Arkansas, Arkansas Marriage 27 Jul 1924 Arkansas County Marriage License Date 26 Jul 1924 The name of the groom in the above record was transcribed as Tim, but no image was provided. The marriage record matches James Theodore Poston, even though family sources report that James married Mary Inez Bonner in 1922. A matching 1930 census record for that was transcribed as Jim Poston and wife Lena also matches James' birth state. But his age makes his birth date earlier. But closely comparing the first letter of the husband's name indicates it might have been Tim instead of Jim. No individual matching a Tim Poston has been found. His birth place indicates he is part of the same Illinois Poston family as James Theodore Poston. 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 11 April, DeWitt, District 1-16, page 12A-12B, Hse #290, Fam #288 Poston, Tim Head M W Rents $7 25 Married Age at first marriage 21 [mar abt 1926] IL IL IL Laborer [b abt 1905] - page 12B - Poston, Lena F W 21 Married Age at first marriage 15 [mar abt 1924] TN TN TN [b abt 1909] In the 1940 census, Lena is reported as Single again, at age 31, and living with a widow named Martha Henson. No record has been found for him in the 1910 census, when he should be about 20 years old. From his lack of appearance in the 1910 census and the 1910 report of number of his mother's children that have died, it appears that McDonald died before the 1910 census.
