Notes for Mary HALL

Mary's grandson Buck Linsten Lynch reports her name to me as Mary Molly Hall.
All the genealogies I have found have her name as Martha Hall. Buck says this
is an erroneous entry from an earlier report. Her name as Mary Hall has been
confirmed in Hall and Lynch sources. Some sources have Molly as a middle name
or in parentheses, indicating it is a nickname. I also have taken it to be a
nickname, since this is a common nickname for Mary. She is listed as Mollie
in the 1880 census.

An anonymous genealogy of the Lynches reports that Martha (Mary/Mollie?) Hall
was born in 1860 in Mt Pleasant, Titus County, Texas. They seem to indicate
that this date of birth is based on her age in the 1870 census. I found her
age in 1880 to be 22, which would mean born in 1858, which is the date I have
used.

In his RootsWeb -- genealogy of Carter-Cook-Rippetoe-Fields, Robert Stephen
Carter has birth in Texas; but year is 1860:
Martha Molly HALL, Birth: 1860 in Texas
Death: 1888 in Navarro, Texas
Burial: Blooming Grove, Navarro, Texas
Father: Robert T. HALL b: ABT 1839 in Georgia
Mother: Mary S. MCENTIRE b: 1836 in South Carolina
Marriage to Grief Linsten LYNCH b: 6 Aug 1852 in Georgia
Married: 1874 in Morris, Texas
-- RootsWeb,
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rsctac&id=I13697

Another family genealogy for the Amox (Mock) family (no longer online) also
reported that Mary and Grief were married in Morris County. We have not found
that record, nor any record in other counties where the families had lived.
John Wardlow reports:
"They didn't marry in Morris County. I have the marriage book from 1875-1941.
Perhaps Titus County or Navarro County. I was hoping someone found a marriage
record for Mollie Hall & Grief Lynch."
-- John Wardlow, RootsWeb genealogy online note to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 4
January 2010

In further correspondence on this question, John wrote:
"Titus County marriages weren't online but I have access to the marriage index
from 1895-1973. all records prior to 1895 in Titus county were destroyed in a
fire at the courthouse. Neighboring Morris, Camp, Cass, & Franklin county
records are available. If the marriage took place in Titus County prior to
1895 we wont be able to find a record. I am assuming that it did since both
Grief & Mollie were with their families in the 1870 Census of Titus County,
Texas"

No definite burial record has been found. Buck Lynch has heard from a Hall
family source that she was buried in Blooming Grove, Navarro County, Texas:
"I can't find Mary Hall Lynch or Samuel L. Lynch records in Navarro or
Henderson County court house. Nothing but an old letter from a Hall woman
saying Mary's grave is in Blooming Grove. ... I am not sure if Mary died in
1888, that's what Hall people said."
-- Buck Lynch, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 28 January 2008

A genealogy for the Amox (Mock) family has reported Mollie's death in Dresden,
with burial in Dresden Cemetery, while Buck reported she was buried in White
Church Cemetery in Blooming Grove. The Amock genealogy is no longer online
for reference (4 January 2010).

Minnie is not recorded in any censuses. Her name is included in a family list
of chidlren, with no dates. She is listed before her sister Pansy who was
born in 1882. So we may assume she was born between 1880 and 1882, but no
death date has been established. She died some time before the 1900 census.
I have found no rexcord of birth or death.

The date of birth reported here for Pansey, April 1884, is two years later
than that reported in genealogies, 6 April 1882. The Social Security Death
Index reports yet another date, April 1885. This is common for people born in
this era. The 190-0 census was notorious for wrong years of birth, commonly 1
years off, often much more.

A descendant of Thomas and his first wife Ara Bell Hall says that both Pansy
and Ara were born in Yancey County, North Carolina. She also states that Ara
(Arra) and Pansey were half-sisters. The timeline, however, does not
accommodate Arra's reported date of birth.

Tom and Ara Bell's marriage record clarifies her birth somewhat, reporting her
18 years old at the time of her marriage in 1898.

Pansey was the daughter of James Madison Hall and his second wife, Rachel
Gurley. James' first wife, Judea or Judy Robinson, is reported to have died
in 1876, while Arra, who is reported in 1900 as being born in Dec 1880, 4
years after Judy died. James married Rachel in 1880, perhaps early enough for
her to have been Arra's mother. But other genealogies report no child of
James Matthew Hall by either wife named Ara/Arra Bell.

In a series of communications with another descendant of Thomas Sheridan
Edmonds, we learned that other members of this lineage also have the idea that
Judith was the mother of Arra Bell, even though the dates in historical
evidence make it impossible.

"I just called one of the two living children of Pansy Susan Dunn, she and her
sister Donna lives in TX. She says that Arra and Pansy were half sisters. She
may be wrong also."
-- Rema Ogle. email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 29 March 2013

In 1904, after Ara Bell's death, Thomas married her sister Pansey Mae Hall.

In the 1880 census, we learn William's middle name.

I found some records in West Virginia that seemed to match Billy, but was
uncertain. I found the Hall genealogy does confirm these related facts with
the same William Preston Hall.

William Preston Hall
Birth 1868 in Yancey County, North Carolina
Death 13 Aug 1937 in Wood County, WV
Parents:
James Madison Hall 1831 - 1916
Judith Robertson 1838 - 1879

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/24115415/person/12508497173?ssrc=&ml_rpos=6&ftm=1

But in the 1900 census, William's birthplace is reported as West Virginia,
when we know from family sources he was born in Yancey County, North Carolina.
His age is similar, being reported in the census as March 1865 (other census
ages make it about 1868 or 1866.) The number of years married matches their
record of marriage in 1894.

1900 Federal Census, Wayne County, West Virginia, 7 June, Ceredo Village Ward
1, District 110, page 8B, Hse/Fam #148
Hall, William Head W M Mar 1865 35 Married 6 years [mar abt 1894] WV TN TN

Later censuses correctly report his birth in North Carolina. In 1910 and 1920
census, which I have not transcribed here, William and Martha are reported in
Wood County, West Virgina. I have not found a 1930 census for them. William
died in 1937.

Notes for Henry Jackson HALLMAN

In the 1860 census, Henry and Sarah were reported in the home of one Mary
Cadlo, age 74, who was reported as a Pauper. There was also a school teacher
in the household, apparenrtly renting a room or quarters. Such details and
relationships were not reported in these early censuses. The person reported
as holding real estate and personal wealth was Henry, reported as a Farmer.
It seems likely this is Henry's mother, under a second married name, but this
is not confirmed.
