They have one daughter, 1 years old, which indicates they married about 1858. 1860 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 14 August, page 72, Hse/Fam #512 Elijah Hamrick 26 M Farmer NC [b abt 1834] Rebecca E Hamrick 23 F NC [b abt 1837] Sarah A Hamrick 1 F NC [b abt 1859] I note that the Hamrick Data Pages do not even record this child. A gravestone in the McSwain Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina, appears to be that of this Elijah Hamrick: "Hamrick, Elijah 29y, 1m, 8d January 18, 1863 CSA" -- W. D. Floyd Transcription, http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/cleveland/cemeteries/mcswain.txt From this information, the birth year of this Elijah Hamrick would be 1834. Working from the 18th of January back, for the months and days given here in the age information, it looks like Elijah was born about the 10th or 11th of December 1833. This matches his approximate birth year we get from the age of 26 in the 1860 census, and age 17 in 1850. This grave information also tells us that Elijah was killed in the American Civil War, serving for the Confederate States of America.

Sources indicate that the parents of Elijah Matterson Hamrick were Samuel I Hamrick and Mary Hamrick. Birth dates vary. Paul Sarrett, who has clear and credible research on Hamricks, McSwains and related families, has the date of 1786 for Elijah's M's birth, but does not give a source. Through another Hamrick researcher I found that a birth record for what appears to be this Elijah Hamrick reports his birth to parents of these same names in 1774. But I do not have another Hamrick in this tree born in or near 1786. There are so many Hamricks of the same name in every generation it is easy to confuse them. Records of the era also unhelpfully have incomplete names to distinguish individuals, like this record with no middle initials. Several genealogies report a daughter of David Hamrick and Sarah McSwain named Elizabeth or Elizabeth Jane, and others report a daughter named Eliza Jane. Some report both these as separate children, usually with Elizabeth born in 1811 and Eliza Jane born in 1816. The 1816 census report Eliza Green, wife of Benjamin Green, as 34 years old, and thus born about 1816. It seems odd one couple would have two daughters with forms of the same name Elizabeth/Eliza. But the birth dates are somewhat of a problem. Several genealogies report only one child as Eliza Jane or Elizabeth Jane, and at least one reports her as Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Hamrick. Genealogies using these names report her and Benjamin in the 1880 census in California as a Black family. Obviously two families have been confused in some of these genealogies. At least one genealogy set reports the husband of Elizabeth Hamrick as John Matheny, born in 1809. According to one of these, Elizabeth and John had 15 children. This genealogy has absolutely no documentation, as is the case with most of these. Several with Benjamin as the husband report the two different Ben and Eliza couples in the 1850 census (white family in Cleveland County, NC) and the 1880 census (Black family in California), with no other sources, and no discussion or explanation at all! So virtually all these genealogies are virtually worthless as more than vague clues. I had reported Elisabeth and Benjamin from a family source, Greene and Bridges, Green-Hamrick-McSwain-Moore Genealogy, "DESCENDANTS of JOSEPH GREEN" (http://home.att.net/~hdbridges/greene.htm). I found the 1850 census for this couple, but no other public records. It may be that the family configuration I have here, especially the children, is also tainted by some early uncareful sources. The 1850 gives us an approximate year of birth for Eliza and marriage for Eliza and Benjamin. 1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 27 August, page 296 (scan 148), Hse/Fam #470 Benjamin Green 41 M Farmer $1000 Real Estate born North Carolina [b abt 1809] Eliza Green 34 F born North Carolina [b abt 1816] Elijah Green 18 M Farmer [No Real Estate value] born North Carolina [b abt 1832] Nancy Green 16 F born North Carolina [b abt 1834] David O Green 14 M Farmer born North Carolina [b abt 1836] Sarah A Green 12 F born North Carolina [b abt 1838] Judith C Green 6 F born North Carolina [b abt 1844] Rebecca Green 4 F born North Carolina [b abt 1846] Milly Green 3 F born North Carolina [b abt 1847] Willie Green 9mos M born North Carolina [b abt Nov 1849] From her age here, we can estimate that Eliza was born about 1816. From the age of the eldest child, Elijah, we can estimate marriage in about 1831. This would mean she was about 15 or 16 when they married. In the 1860 census, Ben's wife is reported as Jane, which would be Elizabeth Jane Hamrick. But her age her is reported as 35, which is way late. It should be about 45-49. 1860 Federal Census, Rutherford County, North Carolina, 14 June, P O Unionville, page 29-30, Hse/Fam #1530 B Green 51 M Farmer $950 Real Estate $125 Personal born North Carolina [b abt 1809] Jane Green 35 (?)
