Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002 William Strange Spouse: Mary Ann Hance Marriage 12 Feb 1844 Jefferson County, Tennessee The marriage date for Mary Ann and William is in early 1844. But note that when they reported the ages of the children in the 1950 census, the first child is too old to fit. James is reported as 8 years old (thus born about 1842) and the second son John age 6, meaning he would have been born about 1844. Respective ages diminish in the 1860 census. It looks like the enumerator just guessed, or the parents did, in the 1850 census. The 1850 ages are closer to objective reality. 1850 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 23 October, District 13, page 138, Hse #962, Fam #996 William Strange 26 M Farmer Tennessee Mary Ann Strange 25 F Tennessee Cannot read or write James C Strange 8 M Tennessee [b abt 1842; cf marriage record 1944] John Strange 6 M Tennessee William A Strange 4 M Tennessee Catharine Strange 1 F Tennessee 1860 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 8 June, PO Not Stated, page 337 (scan 497), Hse #2385, Fam #2429 Wm Strange 39 M Farmer $2000 Real Estate $1000 Personal Tennessee [abt 1821] M A Strange 34 F b Tennessee [abt 1826] Cannot read or write Jas Strange 16 M Laborer b Tennessee [abt 1844; cf 1850 age 8, b abt 1842; cf marriage record 1844] J Strange 14 F b Tennessee [abt 1846] Wm M Strange 12 M b Tennessee [abt 1848] S C Strange 10 F b Tennessee [abt 1850] M A Strange 9 F b Tennessee [abt 1851] R H Strange 8 M b Tennessee [abt 1852] Julia A Strange 6 F b Tennessee [abt 1854] E Strange 4 M b Tennessee [abt 1856] L J Strange 1 F b Tennessee [abt 1859] N Finchum 20 F b Tennessee [abt 1840] In 1870 there are 10 children in the home, and one worker whose last name is unclear. 1870 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 2 August, 3rd Civil District, PO Trion, page 27 (340), Hse #178, Family #176 Strange, William 49 M W Farmer TN Strange, Mary A 46 F W Keeps House TN Strange, Sarah C 21 F W Tennessee Strange, Margaret A E 19 F W Tennessee Strange, Rufus M 17 M W Farm Laborer Tennessee Strange, Julia A C 15 F W Tennessee Strange, Hugh N 13 M W Tennessee Strange, Lucinda J 11 F W Tennessee Strange, Rachel A 9 W Tennessee Strange, Rebecca T 7 F W Tennessee Strange, Tipton S 4 M W Tennessee Strange, William G 2 M W Tennessee Poe, James 20 M W Farm Laborer Tennessee In 1880 there is a granddaughter living with the family, Florence I Hill. There are different individuals in various genealogies confused or mixed for the last husband of Alice Miney Wilson. We know his name was Hancock, from Alice's later records, such as Social Security reporting her as Alice Hancock, and her burial order form, found on one of the genealogies. Thanks to Ann Ragsdale for providing a death certificate and Obituary for James Walter Hancock. Other than these I have not seen on any genealogy or search any definitive documentation for the last husband of Alice Miney Wilson, named Hancock. Several genealogies have him listed under the name of James Walter Hancock, but attached no documentation of had documentation for other individuals in various families named Hancock. James Hancock enlisted in the US Army in 1894 in Ft Worth, Texas, and served about 1.5 years. This record reports his birth place as Navarro County, Texas U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 Walter Hancock Enlistment Age 21yrs 2mos Birth abt 1873 Navarro County, Texas Enlisted 11 May 1894 in Ft Worth, Texas Brown Eyes, Dark Hair, Ruddy complexion 23rd Infantry, Company F Discharged 16 Dec 1895 An Oklahoma Death Certificate for James Walter Hancock in Holdenville places him in the correct location for the residence of Alice Miney and related Barnetts. A related short obituary mentions the only fact in public records, other than the Holdenville location, that I have found to definitively tie him to Alice Miney Wilson Middleton Barnett Hasty Hancock. The place of the funeral matches that on the burial order form for Alice at her later death, with funerals for both being announced in Harvest Time Tabernacle in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Survivors include his wife, three sons, Lee, Oklahoma City; Emett, Chandler; Auther, La Vaca, Ark.; and 12 grandchildren. Bearers will be Frank KISER, Lon BAKER, B. HARRIS, Elvie CRUM, T. J. LANKFORD and Leonard HILDERGRAST. Burial will be in Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Hudson Funeral Home. -- From Holdenville Daily News, Sunday, 30 August 1953, courtesy of Ann Ragsdale, Ancestry Trees, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6318518/person/-53599245 Hancock was also previously married two times. His first wife is given by a couple of genealogies as Eliza Jane Blackwell. She died in 1904 after bearing two children, Victor Lee and Emmett Thomas. Both are mentioned as survivors in the obituary of James Walter Hancock in 1953, named as Lee and Emet [sic], and Emmet is reported as the informant for his father's death certificate in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Genealogies report his second wife as Sarah Emaline White. She appears in censuses as Emma (1910) and Sarah (1940). The obituary cited above also seems to tie our James Walter Hancock to the Hancock family in Arkansas, through the residence of one of his sons, Arthur ("Auther"). The census of 1910 in Ellis County, Texas, reports that James was born in Arkansas. But other censuses report Texas as his state of birth. This Arkansas family is referenced by some genealogies, and rules out other extraneous families in other states that some other genealogies attach to this James Walter Hancock. Note that this obit does not report a place or date of birth. Some genealogies report details of birth, death and marriage that seem to come from family sources, but do not match the documentation records they attach. Alice herself is well-documented in genealogies with photos and other documents and personal information. The Walter Hancock in the 1880 census referenced by some genealogies is thus likely the wrong Hancock for the husband of Alice Miney Wilson Middleton Barnett Hasty Hancock. At lest one genealogy has attached an 1880 census record for a Hancock family with a son named Walter, who has a brother James. Several genealogies have the name of Alice's wife as James Walter. But in this census record Walter has a brother named James, so he is not James Walter. I have not been able to determine exactly when Alice married Walter Hancock This makes me question Walter's parents, who are missing or vary among the genealogies. His death certificate reports no name for either of his parents. It does, however, report his birth place as Texas. There are several Hancocks named James, James W, Walter or other variations in various Texas counties at about the right time or age. The census documentation attached to some genealogies for Walter as a child of George and Julia Hancock in Tom Green County, Texas, is likely the wrong family, since this Walter had a brother named James about 3 years older than him. 1880 Federal Census, Tom Green County, Texas, 3 June, Precinct 2, District 119, page 9, Hse #79, Fam #81 Hancock, George W M 51 Laborer Miss Penn Penn Hancock, Julia W F 41 Wife Keeps House Ark Penn Penn Hancock, Thomas W M 16 Son Tex Miss Ark Hancock, John W M 10 Son Tex Miss Ark Hancock, James W M 8 Son Tex Miss Ark Hancock, Walter W M 5 Son Tex Miss Ark Hancock, Mattie W F 3 Dau Tex Miss Ark A gravestone with no dates seems to be James' grave marker in Holdenville Cemetery, Hughes, OCUnty, Oklahoma, where he was living when he died.
