Peace Justice Hollis Head ruled attempted suicide. He said he made the ruling after reading a note found on Newton A Handy, 41, whose last address was a Sweetwater, Texas, hotel. He was reported in critical condition. The driver of the truck, William Baker, 34, of Monahans, Texas, was in serious condition. Highway Patrolman Herman Seale of Sweetwater said the sedan driven by Handy would have hit the truck headon, but Baker had swerved trying to avoid the crash and the car hit the truck in the side. Head said the note found in Handy's pocket read: "I, Newton A Handy, in my right mind and will, have just decided to end it all. I am no good and I have hurt everybody that I have had anything to do with." -- Newton Aaron Handy, son of Gertie T Philpot (daughter of Winnie Alice Jackson). One genealogy provides some helpful information on some of the Winter family that appears to be from family sources (limited documentation provided), but has some anomalies. For instance this tree reports that Lucinda Haney, wife of Wiley B Winter and mother of Nelson, was born in New Jersey, while the only documentation provided in the tree is the 1880 census. This census, like all documentation, reports her born in Tennessee, as well as both her parents. The date here also differs from age information in censuses. She was born about 1829 or 1830. Note that her birthday as reported here has been read by some genealogy compilers as July 1824, but her age is 70! The age is consistent with other censuses, meaning her birthday would be 1829. The year here has been misinterpreted because the top of the 9 is faded and on first glance can appear unclosed. The age matches every other census, where her age puts her birth year at 1829-30, except for 1880, which would be 1832. 1910 Federal Census, Hughes County, Oklahoma, 7-10 May, Stuart Township, District 113, page 8B-9A, Hse/Fam #159 Winters, James N Head M W 44 Married 21yrs TX AL TN Farmer Owns -- page 9A 10 May -- Winters, Pracilla Wife F W 41 Married 21yrs 1 children/0 living TN TN KY Winters, Lucinda Mother F W 80 Widow TN TN TN No Occupation

However, both the 1920 and 1930 censuses report that Lorene alone of the children was born in Texas. Since these reports are consistent, I think this indicates the family moved for a short time into Texas, where Lorene was born, then moved back to Grady County, near Lindsay (Garvin County), Oklahoma. The family sources seem to be surmising that Lorene was born in (or near) Lindsay by analogy with the other children and their longtime residence in the Lindsay area. The records seem to indicate the birth date was Texas. In the 1910 census, the child matching Lorene is reported born in Oklahoma. The name is different also, Lozan. Lorene's middle initial in 1920 is reported as L, which does match the 1910 name, Lozan. This is a very odd name, but all the names on this page are clearly and consistently written, including this one. There is no mistaking the spelling. The age matches Lorene in other censuses and family information, but the state of birth reported is different. 1910 Federal Census, McClain County, Oklahoma, 6 May, Turnbull Township, District 183, page 4B, Hse/Fam #72 Hanley, Henry Head M W 54 1st Marriage Married 30 years MS Ireland Ireland Farmer Rents [b abt 1875] Hanley, Lorena Wife F W 55 2nd Marriage Married 30 years 6 children/6 living TX TX TX [b abt 1876] Hanley, Rex Son M W 4 OK TX TX [b abt 1906] -- Fam #73 -- Hanley, Rufus Head M W 27 Married 4 years OK TX TX [b abt 1883] Hanley, Gertrude Wife F W 24 Married 4 years 2 children/2 living OK TX TX [b abt 1886] Hanley, Lozan Dau F W 6mo OK AR AR [b Oct 1909] 1920 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, [no date], Bradley, District 161, page 5B, Hse/Family #97 Hanley, Rufus E Head Owns M W 51 TX US US Blacksmith (b abt 1869) Hanley, Gertrude L Wife F W 42 TX US US (b abt 1878) Hanley, Lorine L F W 10 TX MS AR 1930 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 3 April, Pursley Township, District 26, page 2A, Hse #/Fam #26 Hanley, Rufus E Head Owns M W 47 First married at age 23 MS MS TN Farmer Hanley, Gertrude Wife F W 44 First married at age 20 AR LA OK Hanley, Lorene Dau F W 20 Single TX MS AR House Help
