----------------------
Roby, Texas -- A note saying "I...have just decided to end it all" was found
on a critically injured man whose auto smashed into a truck near here Tuesday
[19 Mar 1957].

Peace Justice Hollis Head ruled attempted suicide. He said he made the ruling
after reading a note found on Newton A Handy, 41, whose last address was a
Sweetwater, Texas, hotel. He was reported in critical condition.

The driver of the truck, William Baker, 34, of Monahans, Texas, was in serious
condition.

Highway Patrolman Herman Seale of Sweetwater said the sedan driven by Handy
would have hit the truck headon, but Baker had swerved trying to avoid the
crash and the car hit the truck in the side.

Head said the note found in Handy's pocket read:
"I, Newton A Handy, in my right mind and will, have just decided to end it
all. I am no good and I have hurt everybody that I have had anything to do
with."

Notes for Lucinda HANEY

One genealogy provides some helpful information on some of the Winter family
that appears to be from family sources (limited documentation provided), but
has some anomalies. For instance this tree reports that Lucinda Haney, wife
of Wiley B Winter and mother of Nelson, was born in New Jersey, while the only
documentation provided in the tree is the 1880 census. This census, like all
documentation, reports her born in Tennessee, as well as both her parents.
The date here also differs from age information in censuses. She was born
about 1829 or 1830.

Lucinda Haney
Birth 1825 in New Jersey [!!!]
Death 24 Dec 1917 in Non, Hughes, Oklahoma
Spouse Wiley B Winter b 1822
-- Horn/Crawford, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9058309/person/651142341

Lucinda's husband Wiley B Winter died sometime between the 1870 and 1880
censuses. In 1880 she is a widow on the farm with one son, Nelson, who is
farming in Montague County, Texas, on the Red River.

Winter, N H W M 23 Son Single Farmer TX AL TN [born abt 1857]

In 1900 and 1910 Lucinda is living with her son James in Hughes County,
Oklahoma. In both these censuses the family name is reported as Winters,
rather than Winter as in all previous documentation in censuses or Texas land
documents for her husband Wiley.

Three nephews are also living with James, two named Winters: James age 23 and
Thomas age 21. The third is Bose (?) Taylor age 25. The latter's first name
is very faded and unreadable.

Note that her birthday as reported here has been read by some genealogy
compilers as July 1824, but her age is 70! The age is consistent with other
censuses, meaning her birthday would be 1829. The year here has been
misinterpreted because the top of the 9 is faded and on first glance can
appear unclosed. The age matches every other census, where her age puts her
birth year at 1829-30, except for 1880, which would be 1832.

Jewel's name is spelled phonetically in this 1920 census entry. I have not
discovered what the middle initial stands for. When she was born, the family
was living in or near Bradley, in eastern Grady County. I have not seen her
birth certificate or other documentation of where she was officially reported
born. Lindsay, Grady County, would have been closer, but Chickasha, farther
west, and the county seat of Grady, would have has better medical services.
Maybe she was born at home.

According to family sources in genealogies, Gertrude's name order was Lorella

first with the L middle initial. In 1930, no middle initials are included in

Notes for Lorene Lozan HANLEY

Lorene L. Hanley
Birth Oct. 9, 1909 Oklahoma
Death Aug. 14, 1964 Oklahoma

This memorial reports that Lorene was born in Oklahoma, as do some of the
family genealogies. However, both the 1920 and 1930 censuses report that
Lorene alone of the children was born in Texas. Since these reports are
consistent, I think this indicates the family moved for a short time into
Texas, where Lorene was born, then moved back to Grady County, near Lindsay
(Garvin County), Oklahoma. The family sources seem to be surmising that
Lorene was born in (or near) Lindsay by analogy with the other children and
their longtime residence in the Lindsay area. The records seem to indicate
the birth date was Texas.

In the 1910 census, the child matching Lorene is reported born in Oklahoma.
The name is different also, Lozan. Lorene's middle initial in 1920 is
reported as L, which does match the 1910 name, Lozan. This is a very odd
name, but all the names on this page are clearly and consistently written,
including this one. There is no mistaking the spelling. The age matches
Lorene in other censuses and family information, but the state of birth
reported is different.

Mary Ruth always went by both names. I recall as a child hearing my parents
and family calling her Maruth. That was all we knew her by. My mother's
cousins were "Dave and Maruth." I was quite old before I realized her real
name was the double Mary Ruth!

Mrs Mary Tuyman [sic], 75, Is Honored with Birthday Party

Friends and neighbors of Mrs. Mary Tugman of the Saddle Mountain community
gathered at the Victory schoolhouse to help her observe the 75th anniversary
of her birthday. Mrs Tugman is none of the old settlers of that area.

Following the serving of the dinner, the group joined in singing favorite
songs, led by Thomas Worley as accompanist.
