Notes for Rufus Edward HANLEY

According to Lou Ila Gregory Jenkins, R E always went only by his initials. It
is not certain, but his full name could be Rufus Edward Handley, Jr. He was
reported in the 1930 census as Rufus Jr, with no middle name.

Rufus' birth date reported in this 1900 census is 3 years earlier than the
birth date on his grave. While the census reported him born in June 1880, the
grave says it was 30 Jan 1883. The 1930 census reports that Rufus married
Gertrude at age 23. The known date of the marriage is 15 February 1905. This
would put his birth in 1881 or as late as January 1882. His birthday is
reported by family sources to be in January (1883), so January 1882 seems to
fit the census reports and ages consistently. The 1910 census age matches
birth in 1883. He also reports his birth date as 30 January 1883 on his draft
registration.

According to family sources in genealogies, Gertrude's name order was Lorella
Gertrude, although in the 1920 census Gertrude is her main name and entered
first with the L middle initial. The states of birth reported indicates that
Rufus and Gertrude moved south over the Red River into Texas for 2-3 years
around 1909-11, where Lorene was born.

The 1920 and 1930 censuses report that Lorene was born in Texas.
Interestingly, family sources report she was born in Lindsay, Oklahoma. This
is probably by analogy with the other children and their family's longtime
residence in Lindsay. Both the 1920 and 1930 census show them living in Grady
County locations west of Lindsay, not in Garvin County, for this period. (The
Garvin County line, however, is just a mile west of the Lindsay city limit.)

In 1930, no middle initials are included in the enumerations. The reported
state of birth changes for both Rufus and Gertrude.

wife, Margery are living (with some of their daughters) next door to John Jr
and Emily. Archibald Hanna, John Jr's brother, lives on the other side of
John Jr's property.

I'm trying to figure out which emigrant Hanna family is John Sr's. Of course,
my cousins insist we come from the Hannay family of Sorbie Castle, but until I
can get some corroboration I'm putting warning signs on all of their
suppositions which includes James Hanna and Ann Campbell as John Sr's parents.
Personally, I believe this is incorrect, having found James Hanna's will with
what I assume are all his children named ... and no John.

I have not found John and his family in the 1860 census. They were likely in

Notes for Mollie Walker HANNA

The family name is found spelled Hannah or Hanna. It seems family sources
prefer Hanna. In the 1900 census, the enumerator confused her maiden name
with her given name and listed her as Hannah W Gracy. A great niece wrote
when she saw Mollie in this tree:

"Mollie Hanna: I saw your tree on ancestry and believe this is my great grand
aunt, whose parents are John D & Emilie Hanna."
-- Yvonne, Ancestry.com Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 12 November 2013

In 1850, John and Emily have a daughter named Mary, born about 1848. This is
significant, since Mollie is normally a nickname for Mary. But they already
had one daughter named Mary, about 17 years older than Mollie. Maybe they
simply named Mollie by the nickname as her primary name. (I have not found
them in the 1860 census.)

Emily Hanna 22 F b Alabama [b abt 1828]
Mary Hanna 2 F b Lousiana [b abt 1848]

In the 1870 census, the enumerator wrote her name down wrong, making it appear
like Margia W or Margin W. It may be her proper name was Margie, and that is
meant here. This is documented nowhere else. The age of 6 matches other ages
in the census. The 1900 census reports the year as 1865, a year later than
appears correct, but that census is commonly a year off.

In the 1900 census Mollie is listed for some reason under her last name, which
is usually spelled Hanna. The enumerator apparently took that for her given
name. So here she is Hannah W instead of Mollie W. Mollie is a nickname for
Mary, but I have not found any instance of her as Mary.
In the 1900 census, Mollie Hanna Gracy's daughter is name Mary F (Frances).
This tends to indicate that her mother's given name was also Mary.

The census in 1900 and 1910 tells us that Wylie and Hannah (Mollie) married
about 1881. Their first daughter Mary Frances was born in June 1882,
according to Mary Frances' gravestone. In 1900 Mary Frances and her husband
Enoch A Jackson are living in this household with her parents.

Note that the census reports Mary's birth year as 1883, one year later, as we
commonly find in the 1900 census. Originally they were reported as in the
same household but with a different family number. Later corrections of the
numbering in the census eliminated the separate family number for Enoch and
Mary. But her death certificate reports her birth date as 17 December 1859.
Given the age of 6 in the 1870 census, the death certificate reported date
cannot be correct.

Some time after the death of her husband, Molly moved in with her daughter
Mary Gracy Jackson, whose husband Enoch died in 1927.

In the 1930 census, Molly is a widow, living with her widowed daughter Mary.
The son Jeff was originally listed as Head of the household, although that was
corrected later to make Mary head. But the relationship of the others in the
household was still given in reference to Jeff. So Molly Gracy is listed as
his grandmother.

The census ages vary, as we often find from census to census. The age for
Molly here can be correlated with previous age reports, making her born abt
1866 (from census age) and reported as age 69 here. To be 69 in 1930, she was
born about 1861. Error on both ends means that is pretty close. Her birthday
was reported in the 1900 census as December 1865, which would mean her age
should have been 64 at the time of the 1930 census.

A Texas Death Index entry seems to match our listings for Molly and Hannah W
with the name Mollie Walker Hannah Gracy, died 14 January 1940 in Wilbarger
County, Texas, just over the Texas border and a bit west from Love County
where we have all the other reports of her. Her death certificate reports her
date of birth as 17 December 1859, but this cannot be right. In the 1870
census she is reported as only 6 years old. Somewhere along the year someone
remembered incorrectly or wrote it down wrong.

Susie married Daniel P Jenkins in Arkansas County where they were both living.
I have not found whether the service was held in their town of St Charles or
in the county seat of DeWitt, about 15 miles to the west, where they would
have had to get the license.

In 1900, Daniel and his wife Susie are living next door to Dan's brother
Charles, who is reported as head of the family for all the younger brothers
and sisters, after the death of both their parents about 1899. On the other
side of Charles is their brother Jacob and his wife Stella.

There is apparently an error in Emma's birth date. Originally the enumerator
had born Feb 1898 and age 1. Another hand has marked out the 1 and written 2.
The original birth date written here could not be right if Roy's birth date is
correct, with only 6 months between their birth dates. I think the correct
birth date for Emma should be Feb 1899, which would make her 1 year old at the
June census time, as the enumerator originally wrote.

Roy does not appear in the 1910 census, when he should be about 11 or 12. We
conclude that he died befiore 1910. Four more children were born before 1920.

he died. In 1900 Susie has had two children, Roy and Emma. I would have
expected the 1910 census to report 6 children, and 5 living.

Note that Coley and Mattie's first three sons were born in Arkansas, then the
last two in Louisiana, and now they are back in Arkansas since the birth of
Arch just 4 months before. Hempstead County, Arkansas, borders Bossier
Parish, Louisiana, on the north. Hope is the Hempstead county seat.

Columbus' and James' mother is reported born in Indiana, indicating that
Mattie is Coley's second wife. John, Benjamin and Arch are Mattie's sons.
This corresponds to the difference in Coley and Mattie's ages. This is
further corroborated by the corrected error in Coley's record for the number
of years married.

The enumerator first entered 19 years married (married in abt 1881), matching
the first marriage, then corrected it to 13 years (married in abt 1887),
matching Mattie's record. Columbus' birth date is reported as Dec 1881, which
would match a first marriage for Coley in early 1881 or late 1880.

Since John was also reported born in Arkansas, but in Sept 1889, this fits
with a marriage in 1887. Birth states of the children also indicates they
they lived on the Arkansas side of the border. Note also that it is reported
that in that 10-year period Mattie has had 6 children, but only 3 are living.
This is consistent with the gap between the marriage and the birth of the
first reported child, John, in Sept 1889. The first child was born before
John, but died before this 1900 census.

Various genealogies report they moved to McCurtain County, Oklahoma. This is
confirmed by their daughter's Social Security records, which repoert Nellie
Alford born in Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma in 1910.

They were there before the census was taken in 1910. The census shows the

was born in early 1907 or in 1906. We can estimate they moved across the
Oklahoma border about 1905.
