One genealogy gives a date of death for James, 1840, but has no place, and provides no documentation or explanation.
Sources are spotty for James Harkins who married Sarah Bartles. Some genealogie shave confused him with another James Harkins withthe middle name Marshal. Some genealogies report him born in South Carolina, matching the 1850 census. In the 1850 census, James Harkins is living next door to his widowed mother Nancy and her two other sons Tilman R and Asbury B Harkins. 1850 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 13 November, page 32 (scan p 263), Hse/Fam #1587 James Harkins 31 SC [born abt 1819] Sarah M Harkins 22 NC [born abt 1828] Margaret Harkins 4 F GA [born abt 1846] Nancy Harkins 2 F GA [born abt 1848] John G F P Harkins 1 month M GA [b September 1850] A couple of Harkins family genealogies report the full name of James' wife as Sarah M Bartles. The record for the 1860 census for Cherokee County, North Carolina, appears to be the right family, but Tilman's age is reported as only 21 (possibly it is 31, but should be about 34) while in 1850 in Murray County, Georgia, he was 24. The age is also off for Jane, who was 14 in 1850. The birth places for Jane and the children, however, match Jane Elizabeth Terry, daughter Dovina and son John Marshall Harkins. The ages for the children match other reports on their birth dates. This 1860 census also reports Tilman's birth place very specifically as Haywood County, North Carolina, while the 1850 reported the state as South Carolina. 1860 Federal Census, Cherokee County, North Carolina, 15 August, PO Shooting Creek, page 164 (scan p 250), Shooting Creek District, Hse/Fam # 1095 Tilman Hawkins 21 (31?, cf 24 in 1850) M Mechanic $200 Personal Estate b Haywood Co NC Jane Hawkins 22 F b Murray Co GA Dovina Hawkins 4 F b Murray Co GA John Hawkins 1 M b Murray Co GA Since this birth report is more exact, I will use this as the birth place for Tilman.
