"Apparently he met Genevieve when she was attending college in San Diego.
William and Genevieve were married at Santa Ana, CA on July 6, 1926. They
returned to San Diego to live. ... It was on the National City property that
William and Genevieve decided to plant an avacado orchard. I think the land
was about 40 acres. ... Unfortunately William died in a plane crash on
September 30, 1930. ... Shortly after the funeral of William, Genevieve
received word that her mother had been killed in an auto accident in Nowata,
Okla on September 13, 1930. After the funeral, Genevieve returned to San
Diego and took care of her avacado grove, becoming a respected member of the
Avacado Association."

Notes for James M HARKINS

Sources are spotty for James Harkins who married Sarah Bartles. Some
genealogie shave confused him with another James Harkins withthe middle name
Marshal. Some genealogies report him born in South Carolina, matching the
1850 census.

In the 1850 census, James Harkins is living next door to his widowed mother
Nancy and her two other sons Tilman R and Asbury B Harkins.

A couple of Harkins family genealogies report the full name of James' wife as
Sarah M Bartles. Few sources are documented for the information in many of
the genealogies, but the clarity and detail of the information presented in
one or two reflects family sourcing and credibility.

One by Brendy Martinez provides some details about family members and death
locations. Ignore the death date since this cannot be the death report of the
same James Marshall Harkins, born in 1819.

Some genealogies (like the one noted above) report the death of James Marshall
Harkins in Shelby County, Alabama, in 1947. But note this could not be the
same person! He would have been 128 years old!

I suspect this is a grandson, but have not tried to follow the children of
John (born 1818-19) and Sarah. The Alabama Death Records report that a James
M Harkins died on 22 May 1947 in Jefferson County (Birmingham). Several
genealogies report he died on 20 May 1947 in De Kalb County, Alabama. It
appears that the latter was his address of residence at the time of death, but
he died in Birmingham, probably in hospital. I have not been able to figure
out why this date is two days earlier than the death certificate reports.

Note that the reported age does not match the reported birth date. First 28
years would make is back to June 1899, then subtract the 9 months, that puts
us back to either September 1888, 16 days would make it the 2nd of the month.
Other sources report his birth date as 1 September 1877. So the age would
still be off by one year. Figuring birth as reported on 1 September 1899, his
age at death would be 27 years, 9 months, 16 days.

John Dilling Harkins
Birth Apr. 26, 1922 Oklahoma, USA
Death Mar. 22, 1967 Tulsa County, Oklahoma, USA

John was the son of John Dilling Harkins, Jr. and Mary Frances Schooley. He
married Eleanor Frances Venable and had three children, Beth, Lee, and John
IV. They divorced in 1956 and he remarried to Jacqueline Fay McNamee (not her
maiden name) who had two children from a previous marriage, Harry and Becky.
They divorced in 1963. He married a third time to V. Oneta Summers.

He served in the US Navy from 31 Aug 1940 to 14 Jul 1943 when he received a
medical discharge. He met Eleanor around that time.

They made their home in and around Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked as a Radio
Dispatcher for the Tulsa Police Department until his death. He was well known
for his abilities in this position and received an award for this.

John loved to hunt and fish, he always had a bird dog and once said he would
like to retire and become a Lake Patrol officer so that he could "do this all
day long."

This family is not found in the 1860 census in Georgia. The record for the
1860 census for Cherokee County, North Carolina, appears to be the right
family, but Tilman's age is reported as only 21 (possibly it is 31, but should
be about 34) while in 1850 in Murray County, Georgia, he was 24. The age is
also off for Jane, who was 14 in 1850.

The birth places for Jane and the children, however, match Jane Elizabeth
Terry, daughter Dovina and son John Marshall Harkins. The ages for the
children match other reports on their birth dates. This 1860 census also
reports Tilman's birth place very specifically as Haywood County, North
Carolina, while the 1850 reported the state as South Carolina.
