A Find a Grave memorial reports the wife of this Gene Hawkins was Mary Alice Knox. So maybe there was a second Gene Hawkins. Note that the genealogy above also reports Gene as Hershel Gene. The genealogy below, and a correspodning California death record are in the name of Hershel Hawkins. Maybe Hershel and Gene are two different individials.
