However, if he was born in September, then he could not have been 1 year old in June 1900. The enumerator must have determined the year of birth by math, but did not account for the month of birth, which he correctly recorded. This is a very common error in the 1900 census. The year 1898 would be the correct one, also attested by the age reported in the census of January (February) 1920 above. I found Jasper and his second wife, reported as Rachael T, in Baxter County, where his parents and the others were living in 1880. The T matches Tennessee. Later censuses report Racheal Tennessee as born in Arkansas with her parents both born in Tennessee. The census dates would support the idea that Jasper's first wife is the mother of his children, and he married Rachael (Tennessee) after he was in Arkansas. William's burial in Oklahoma also has a headstone memorial for Mary Jane Hayes, but it is inscribed "Barried in Arkansas." The 1880 census for William with his second wife reports that he and Rachael have been married 20 years, or married about 1879. This would give us a time before which Mary Jane died in Arkansas, and indicates she probably died in Baxter County. All the children reported in 1880 were born in Georgia, further supporting this idea. The mother of the children is reported to have been born in Georgia also, but that is a closer match for Mary's birth in South Carolina than Arkansas. Some genealogies have Mary's name as Mary Jane Pitts, but details and document sources provided refer to a different Pitts family, so these sources are not reliable other than as possible clues. This is now a ghost town, being bypassed by the railroad. ----------------------- GHOST TOWN: McGEE INDIAN TERRITORY By Brawner Shi Published in the Chronicles of Oklahoma By Charles W Mooney Out of the mist and shadows of the almost forgotten past, most of the characters have been resurrected that once made up the little town of "McGee, I.T." The town was located north of Stratford, Oklahoma. Although the total population was less than one hundred within a mile radius of McGee in 1900, it was a proud town and made a gallant attempt to survive in the land of the Chicksaw Nation. It might have been alive today with its roots deep in the rich black soil of present Garvin Co. if some railroad agents had not demanded the payment of $3,000. from the storekeepers of McGee for the railroad line to come through town.> Today McGee is a ghost town, surviving only in memory without a single reminder to give evidence of its existence, except the mute witness of theold McGee Cemetery at the southeast edge of the place where the town once thrived. William Wallace "Wally" McGee was the towns founder and namesake, not "Walter McGee" which has been eroneously quoted. He first came here as a lad of 18 back in 1885 when he trapped for a living in Indian Territory. In 1891 he opened the first business in the then embryo town, his blacksmith shop adjoining his log cabin home. He had learned his trade before coming to the wind swept prairies of Oklahoma. Wally McGee was a tall, thin, clean shaven white man, and was married and had two children. Soon after he opened his blacksmith shop in 1891, W.J. Long built the first store in town, about 150 yards south of the McGee house and blacksmith shop. The new store had a big sign on the front: "W.J.Long-Dry Goods Groceries, Provisions". Long sold the "Springfield" make of wagons, and had one pound cans of Black Beauty brand axle grease for sale. Early in 1892 Wally McGee expanded his business interests by opening a sawmill, and soon afterward, he built the first cotton gin in McGee. He operated both from a nearby pond formed from rains during the year. After several seasons, Mr. W.W. McGee moved to Avoca in Pottawatomie Co., two miles north of present Asher where his brother Tom McGee operated a cotton gin. The third business in the town of McGee was a post office, which had opened on Apr. 15, 1891. It was located in the rear of W.J. Long's store, with Joe Moad (not William G. Mood) as postmaster. Joe's left hand was amputated at the wrist. He would "bunch" the letters in the crook of his left elbow, then thumb through, sort, and alphebetized them with his good right hand. Joe Moad was killed in 1897, by unknown outlaws who shot at him through the back door of the store while attempting to burglarize the place. -- "History of McGee," Weebly, http://mcgeeindianterritory.weebly.com/history-of-mcgee.html ----------------------- ----------------------- William Wiley Hayes Birth Aug 10, 1819 Habersham County, Georgia Death Dec 15, 1909 Stratford, Garvin County, Oklahoma William Wiley HAYES Baxter County Arkansas History: William Wiley Hayes was born in Habersham County Ga. Elijah Hays (sometimes spelled Hayes) married Mary Weaver. Some have her full name as Mary Jane Weaver. Family Data Collection - Marriages Mary Weaver Elijah Hays Marriage 1819 GA Some genealogies report Elijah's full name as Elijah Joseph David Hayes. I have found no record documenting that name. But these his oldest son is reported in the 1850 census as D J, which would seem to stand for David Joseph. 1850 Federal Census, Habersham County, Georgia, 9 December, District 12, page 118, Hse/Fam #90 Elijah Hayse 65 M Farmer $0 Real Estate Stated b NC Mary Hayse 49 F b NC D J Hayse 24 M Farmer b GA J C Hayse 18 M b GA L Hayse 16 M b GA Next door is Mary Weaver Hayes' brother John and his family. 1850 Federal Census, Habersham County, Georgia, 9 December, District 12, page 118, Hse/Fam #90 John Weaver 48 M Farmer $1500 Real Estate b SC Mary Weaver 48 F b NC L W Weaver 16 M b GA N W Weaver 14 M b GA A W Weaver 11 M b GA S W Weaver 9 M b GA Rebecca Davisson (?) 74 M b GA [Mary's mother?] Also living nearby is another member of the Weaver family, who appears to be another brother of Mary Weaver Hayes. 1850 Federal Census, Habersham County, Georgia, 4 December, District 12, page unreadable, Hse/Fam #28 F A Weaver 25 M Occup Unstated $800 (?) In 1850 recently married Susan is enumerated in Wayne County with her husband Henry J Brewer. Here her name is reported as Susannah, which matches the name Susan reported for in other censuses. Genealogies with details and photos confirm that William's father was Henry J Brewer. These genealogies, however, report her name as Susan H Hays, not Susannah. 1850 Federal Census, Wayne County, Tennessee, 2 November, Civil District 10, page 675 (scan 339), Hse #991, Fam #1003 Henry Brewer 25 M Farmer $100 Real Estate b Tenn [b abt 1825] Susannah Brewer 20 F b Tenn [b abt 1830] In the 1860 census, Susan Brewer is a widow, and in is the household of Caroline Hays, who appears to be her mother.
