Notes for Edward Pierce HILL

I have a memory, and my notes of a family conversation at some time (place or
date uncertain), that Aunt Ouida's married name was Hill. I had no
information on the name of her husband from our Terry family background. I
found reference to this family in the censuses of 1920 and 1930.

In 1900 Edward is 1 year old. We learn form the 1900 census that his family
are from Arkansas, but he was born in Indian Territory after the family moved
there.

1900 Federal Census, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, 28 June, Township 10,

Hill, Edward Son W M June 1898 1 Ind Terr Ark Ark

The 1900 census reports Edward's birth date as June 1898. The Social Security
Death Index agrees with this and provides the exact day. We also learn here
that Edward moved to Arizona at an age before he began working, since his
Social Security number was issued in Arizona. But he returned to his home
state at some time before his death.

One or more genealogeis gives the specific place of birth for Edward and his
brother Elmer as Spiro, LeFlore County, Oklahoma. This was in Choctaw Nation
at the time, as noted in the 1900 census.

Edward's mother died around 1906. His father remarried and the blended family
is enumerated here in Arkansas, including his new half-brother Vernon
(Vernin). In this sentence, Edward is enumerated under his middle name
(misspelled) with the E as a middle initial.

In 1920, Edward and wife Ouida are in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he is a
Sergeant in the US Army, during WWI. After the war they moved back to
Oklahoma, where they are living in Hope Township of Stephens County (Marlow
county seat) for the 1930 census.

The age reported does not match from 1920 to 1930 censuses. In 1920, Edward
is 21 years old, a year older than his wife Ouida. This seems to fit. In
1930, the recorded age is 35, while Ouida is 30. I am following the age in
the 1920 census, yielding a birth year of 1899.

Notes for Edward Pierce HILL

I have the names of this Hill family from my notes of a family conversation at
some time. The place or date was uncertain in family knowledge. Virginia Lee
and Edward P Hill were twins. In April 2007, I found information on the
father and birth dates in the 1930 census:

1930 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 21 April, Hope Township,
District 8, page 6B, Hse #114, Fam #119
Hill, Edward P Head M W 35 married at age 20 OK AR AR Farmer

Hill, Virginia L Dau F W 7 OK OK GA
Turkett, Henry M W 31 TX TX TX Farm Labour
Smart, Holly [transcribed by Ancestry as Hally] M W 20 TX TX TX Farm Labour

I note here that Ouida's mother is reported as born in Florida. This is the
only indication I have seen that Thomas Duncan Terry's wife was born in
Florida. Other sources from family and censuses indicate TD's wife (Ouida's
mother) Martha Wiley Wall was born in NC. Note also that Edward and Ouida's
reported ages and the age at marriage cannot match, unless Edward Sr was
married for a short time before marrying Ouida.

I have not found Emma and her childern in the 1910 census, the first census
after she was widowed, in 1909.

In 1920 Emma is a widow, with her childen as the second famliy in the
household of a family named Carloski. She is reported as a boarding house
keeper, which sounds like this is her house, though the Carloski widow is
listed first (Hse #68, Family #88) with her children, followed by boarders.
Lillie Carloski is also reported is a boarding house keeper, so they must be
partners. I see, however, that Lillie is reported as owner of her residence,
while Emma is reported as renting. Perhaps Emma is an employee.

at home with her. Note that states of birth of both her father and mother are
different here. Her age here matching a birt date in 1874-5.

Notes for Frances Leah HILL

A couple of family genealogies report information on Frances Leah Hill.

Frances Leah Hill
Birth 24 Mar 1863 in Cass County, Texas
Death 12 May 1921 in Roundtimber, Baylor, Texas
Parents Benjamin Franklin Hill 1826-1901
Margaret Emily Dobbs 1840-1892
Marriage 25 Sep 1883 to Andrew Wyette Brinkley
-- Williams/Brinkley/Mason/Vaughn Family Tree,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/49994/person/-2136232322?ftm=1

This source reports a different marriage date from another family source that
comes to us from Molllie Mae Alexander, who says Frances Leah married Andrew
Wyette Brinkley on 20 September 1883.

"Andrew Wyette Brinkley, born April 14 1862 in Dyer Co Tenn. Frances Leah
Hill born March 24 1863 in Cass Co Tex. They were married Sept 20th 1883 in
Cass Co Tex."
-- Mollie Mae Brinkley Alexander Family Notes

This report conflicts with the census report of 1900, were Fannie Leah reports
she was born in March 1867 in Tennessee. The birth in Tennessee is
interesting. A genealogy of the Hills reports that Benjamin Franklin married
both his wives in Cass County, Texas. His second wife, Emily Margaret Dobbs,
was Fannie Leah's mother.

In 1900, Fannie Leah and her husband Andrew Wyette Brinkley were living next
door to widowed Benjamin Franklin HIll and three younger children. All these
children are reported as born in Texas. I cannot determine where Mollie Mae
got the birth date of 24 March 1863 for Fannie Leah. But it matches the birth
date given in the Williams genealogy cited above.

1900 Federal Census, Johnson County, Texas, 4 June, Grandview, District 64,
page 4A, Hse/Family #63
Brinkley, A W Head W M Apr 1862 38 Married 16 years TX TX TX Farmer Rents
Brinkley, F L W F Apr 1867 33 Married 16 years 9 children 6 living TN NC NC

We know birth dates and places are often wrong in the census. The oddest
thing about the census is that Fannie Leah reported she was born in Tennessee.
The age of 33 that she reports, however, matches the birth date reported in
the census, which makes the birth date in 1867 seem viable. But we find that
in 1910, Fannie is reported as 47 years old, matching a birth year of 1863!

1910 Federal Census, Parker County, Texas, 18 April, Weatherford, District 67,
page 4A, 45 Weatherford Street, Hse/Fam #77
Brinkley, Andrew W Head M W 48 Married 26 years Tennessee Tennessee Tennessee

Brinkley, Frances L Wife F W 47 Married 26 years 10 children 6 living TX TN
TX
Brinkley, Laura Mattie Dau F W 17 TX TN TX
Brinkley, Reuben Cole Son M W 14 TX TN TX
Brinkley, Mollie May F W 9 TX TN TX

We see another change in this census. Fannie's birth place is now Texas, and
instead of North Carolina, her parents are reported born in Tennessee and
Texas, the locations we have found in other public and family sources. The
child reported previously as Martha L is now Laura Mattie. Mattie is the
nickname for Martha and the L stood for Laura. We are uncertain at this
point, though, of the order of the names. I would venture that the original
was Martha Laura. But if she had decided to go by Laura, "Laura Mattie"
sounds good.

We see from the first genealogy cited above that Frances Leah was living in
Round Timber, Baylor County, Texas, at the time of her death. It is thought
that she died at home. Here is a bit of information about Round Timber,
Texas.
____________________________

ROUND TIMBER, TEXAS. Round Timber, on Farm Road 2374 near the Throckmorton
county line in southeast Baylor County, became the first permanent settlement
in the county in 1874 when John W. Stevens built a cabin. Col. C. C. (Lum)
Mills tried to settle there in the late 1850s or early 1860s, but hostile
Indians forced him away; he returned in 1875. The site was named for two round
clumps of trees useful for building material. In the mid-1890s the community
was moved four miles northwest, where it prospered as a trading center for
some years. The population declined to twenty-five in 1940 and ten in 1980. In
1990 it was recorded as eight. The population was two in 2000.

Harvey's Death Certificate reports his mother as Parazay (Parazade) Bearden.
Die to some conflicts in data, it is possible she was his stepmother rather
than his mother. Many genealogies report that William's wife in 1900 named
Pansey is the same persons Parazade Bearden who was his wife in 1820, but
there are some discrepancies that make it appears they are two different
persons. And the 1920 census reports that Parazade is the third wife. In the
1910 census William's wife is reported as P Hill, so it is not definitive.
The birth places also are all only US, with no states specified.

Notes for Horace Amos HILL

A collection of data reports his mother as Parazade Bearden. The source of the
information in the collection is not clear. He was born in 1895. The name of
his father's wife in the 1900 census is Pansey, and her birth parents' birth
state information does not match definite records of Parazade Bearden Hill
later.

It is possible Pansey Hill was William B Hill's second wife and the mother of
all children born before 1900, and that Parazade was the third wife. The 1920
census reports that she was the third wife. The 1910 census is indeterminate,
because the wife is reported as simply P Hill.
