Notes for Daniel HORTON

Daniel was the first child of Isaac and Horton and Mary Ann Green, daughter of
Meshack Green and Lucretia Franklin.

Children of Isaac Horton and Mary Green are:
i. Daniel Horton, born 1796 in Pendleton, South Carolina; died 1860 in
Marshall, Alabama; married (1) Mary "Polly" East; married (2) Malinda Aft.
1854.
-- Ancestors of Janet Lee Jinkins,
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/u/l/Janet-J-Culp/GENE1-0013.html

Daniel and his wife Mary East are enumerated in the 1850 census in Gwinnett
County, Georgia, not far from both their parents.

1850 Federal Census, Gwinnett County, Georgia, 25 September, page 389, Hse/Fam

Mary Horton 60 F b SC [b abt 1790]
F Marion Horton 18 M Farmer b GA [b abt 1832]
Elizabeth Horton 20 F b GA [b abt 1830]

Mary's parents are enumerated on the same page with them. This is actually
her step-mother, since in fact her birth year based on her age her is after
Mary's birth date! Patience is 38 years younger than Benjamin, according to
this census.

1850 Federal Census, Gwinnett County, Georgia, 25 September, page 389, Hse/Fam
#944
Benjamin East 88 M Farmer $No Real Estate b VA [b abt 1762]
Patience East 50 F b SC [b abt 1800]

A genealogy provides the names of Daniel and Mary's children:

Daniel Horton, born 1796 in Pendleton, South Carolina; died 1860 in Marshall,
Alabama. He was the son of 240. Isaac Horton and 241. Mary Ann Green. He
married 121. Mary "Polly" East.
Spouse: Mary "Polly" East, born 1790 in South Carolina; died 1854 in Gwinnett
Co., GA.

Children of Daniel Horton and Mary East are:
i. Thomas Horton, born 1815; died Bef. 1860.
ii. William Horton, born 1819; died Bef. 1850.
iii. James Horton, born 1820; died Unknown.
iv. Eliza Ann Horton, born 1821; died Unknown.
v.   Jeffrey Horton, born 1822 in Georgia; died 1888 in Blount, Alabama;
married (1) Mary White; married (2) Elizabeth White Aft. 1849; married (3)
Josephine Bullard December 27, 1887 in Nectar, Alabama.
vi. Abraham Horton, born 1823; died Unknown.
vii. George Washington Horton, born 1825; died Unknown.
viii. Augustine Horton, born 1827; died Unknown.
ix. John Horton, born 1829; died Unknown.
x. Elizabeth Horton, born 1830; died Unknown.
xi. F. Marion Horton, born 1832; died Unknown.
xii. Isaac N. Horton, born 1832; died 1927
-- Ancestors of Janet Lee Jinkins,
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/u/l/Janet-J-Culp/GENE1-0011.html#CHILD131331

I wonder why this last child here, Isaac N Horton, does not show up on the
1850 census, if he was a twin to F Marion, who is reported in that census.
This genealogy says he lived until 1927, so if he was born in 1832, why was he
not listed in the 1850 census?

The 1860 census reports three other children not showing up on this list.
Sarah A was born about 1846, David S about 1847 and Jessee L about 1855. The
genealogy cited just above says Mary died in 1854, and other genealogies
report that Daniel married his second wife Malinda "after 1854." This should
mean that any children born before 1854 were Mary's children, or were
Malinda's children whom Daniel adopted.

But Mary was born in 1790. When Jesse was born in 1855 or so, Mary would
have been 65 years old! She was not Jesse's mother! When Sarah was born in
about 1846, she would have been 56, making it very unlikely that she is the
mother of any of these three younger children. Mary was in the 1850 census,
and her last child reported there was born in 1832. So Mary was still living
and married to Daniel when the oldest children in the 1860 census were born.

All these three children in the 1860 census are the children of Malinda.
Perhaps when Daniel married Malinda, he adopted her three children, or perhaps
she was already married to a Horton and the children already had that last
name. Finally, it is possible that Jessee is the child of both Daniel and
Malinda, if they married about 1854. I do not have an exact birth date for
Jesse.

David S Horton 13 M born Georgia [b abt 1847]
Jessee L Horton 5 M born Georgia [b abt 1855]

This census tells us that Daniel and Malinda did not move to Alabama until
after Jesse's birth in about 1855. All these children were born in Georgia.

David Lennox Horton
Birth Jun 16, 1838 St Francois County, Missouri
Death Feb 3, 1923 St Francois County, Missouri

David is the son of John B Horton Jr, great grandson of Abraham Horton, who
moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in the 1700s. His grandfather John B
Horton Sr married Ann, Anna or Nancy Ann Green, who was of Cherokee descent.
For this he was dismissed from the New Garden Friends Monthly Meeting.

John Sr was among Cherokees who signed the 1817 Cherokee treaty with the
United States to exchange their lands for new lands in Arkansas, part of the
Louisiana Purchase and later Missouri Territory. According to his obituary in
February 1923, David was born near Iron Mountain in St Francois County,
Missouri, in the southeastern part of Missouri.

David married Margaret Susannah Lane 24 December 1857. (His obituary says the
date was 25 Dec 1858.) Some sources say it was in St Clair County, Missouri,
others say St Francois County.

His obituary reports that the date of death was 4 February 1923, but the
burial register of Doe Run Cemetery reports the date of death as 3 Feb 1923.

Susannah is buried in the Horton Cemetery in Belgrade, Washington County,
Missouri

-------------------
Did you know my brith certificate listed my name as Lucy? I had it corrected
when I was about 18 years old, which was not an easy thing to do.

I was born at home on a cold stormy night, the doctor did not make it there in
time, so I was delivered by Grandma Julie and Geraldine. I think the doctor
did not keep good records and when it was time to file my certificate, just
listed me as Lucy, probably because he didn't remember that my name was Sue or
he may never knew. Guess he just had to fill in the blanks. : ) My birth
certificate came with Lucy and was never corrected until there was a real
need. As you can tell, accurate records were not a high priority.

Nancy was named Eva Jeanette at birth. At that time there was a 1st grade
reader with characters of Tom and Nancy. Geraldine thought that since we had a
Tommy, we should have a Nancy. It caught on very quick and Nancy was the name
she has always used. I think she had her birth certificate corrected a few
years ago.
