Notes for Jewell Ernest HORTON

In his daughter's obituary, his name is spelled Ernest and his wife Ernestine.
The obituary identifies him as Ernest Jr. His father's name was spelled
Earnest, but he went by Earnie.

"Melba Jane Horton, 60, of Eustace, TX, died Aug. 14. She was born Oct. 2,
1951, in Ethel to Ernest Horton Jr. and Ernestine Zell (Franks) Horton. Her
parents; grandparents, Ernie and Lucy Horton; and two brothers, Dale Ernest
Horton and Larry Russell Horton, preceded her in death."
-- Obituary of Melba Horton, DeWitt Era-Enterprise of DeWitt, Arkansas,
Smalltown News,
http://smalltownnews.com/article.php?catname=Obituary&pub=DeWitt%20Era-Enterprise&pid=55&aid=164258

Both Ernie and his father went by the nickname of their middle name Ernest.
His father was Samuel Ernest Horton. The reference to Ernie Jr would make us
think he was also Samuel Ernest Horton, but confusingly, the term Junior was
sometimes used locally, colloquially, if a father and son went by the same
name, not necessarily that were actually named the same. No record has been
found of the younger Ernie that gives his first name.

One Texas death record is found reporting a death in Dallas County, Texas,
that may be for our Ernie, with only the name Jewell Horton. One genealogy
reports him as Jewell Ernest Horton, but provides no anecdotal or record
documentation for the name. A Social Security Death Index record matches
this, in the name of Ernest Horton.

This is likely the same Ernie Horton, since the manager of his FAG record of
burial in Henderson County, Texas, has linked the memorial to the Find a Grave
memorials for our Ernie's parents in Ethel. And in later life, several of the
children were also in Texas. But though the Social Security death record has
the name Jewell Horton, that grave has only the name Ernest Horton. (See both
the respective death records and Fnd a Grave record below.)

For a long while, the Horton family was not found in the 1930 and 1940
censuses. When, in 2019, they were found, Ernie's name had been
mistranscribed as Jerod. In fact, the name written by the enumerator was
Jewel, matching the Texas death record for Jewell Horton. The death record
has the normal spelling of that name.

It is reported in the community that Ernestine had some mental illness,
perhaps causing the latr divorce. No records have been found on that illness
or the divorce. Nor has any divorce record been found. No further record is
found for Ernestine. The children wound up being raised by the grandparents,
according to Edith McSwain, who grew up in the Ethel community near the
Hortons.

The wife's name here PA probably stands for Peggy Ann. Peggy is a common
nickname for Margaret. The enumerator reported her that John's baby sister
Sallie was 1 month old but also that she was born in December, which would
make her about 8 months old.

In the 1880 census in Attala County, Mississippi, John was enumerated with his
parents, reported to be 15 years old. This age matches other birth and age
reports for John Berry Horton.

Cousin and neighbor Edith McSwain Jenkins knew this family, who lived across
the north field from her house when she was growing up in Ethel, Arkansas.
Edith says she remembers Johnny Horton had three children, Helen, about 2
years older than her brother George, who was born in 1943; Sydney, a year
ahead of Edith in school, so born about 1947, and another son, whoe name she
cannot remember, who was a year older than Sudney, or born about 1946.

Notes for John Brissell HORTON

Sheri Horton, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 19 October 2010, "Daughter Nancy
Anne Greene married Jonathan Horton son of Abraham and Martha Brissell Horton.
... Jonathan and Nancy's son John married Susan Grider and the family moved to
Washington Co Mo."

Sheri also stated that Isaac, who married Nancy Ann's suster Mary, was
Jonathan's brother and then lists all the other brothers of John Brissell
Horton. So the naming of John Brissell Horton as Jonathan was intentional in
this information. It has been cnfirmed that John and Nancy's son was John
Brissell Horton Jr.

But the marriage to Susan Grider matches the son of John Brissell and Nancy
Ann Horton. Sheri has done extensive research trying to put together the
Horton line.

John's birth year on his grave is reported as as 1789. His name there is John
Brissell Horton Jr. A memorial exists on Find a Grave (see below). Sheri
Horton now lists him simply as John Horton.

----------------
You will note on the will I made a reference to Christopher Girder/Crider. He
was married to Elizabeth Corbin, d/o Peter Corbin, Christopher and Elizabeth's
daughter Susan Grider, married John Horton, son of John Brissel Horton and
Nancy Ann Green.

John Horton married to Susan is the John who fought in war of 1812 and
received the land grant for Missouri. John and Sue had son Christopher
Columbus Horton, he married Achsah Montgomery in Washington Co Mo. They had
son Isaac Horton who married Rachel Minnie Montgomery. Achsah's niece. Isaac
and Minnie had Bert Horton who married Essie Mae Byington, They had Eugene B
Horton who was my Dad.
-- Sheri Horton, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 26 August 2015
----------------

In 1850, John and Susan were enumerated in the census in Concord Township of
Washington County, Missouri. All the children were reported born in Missouri.
Christopher was the older at age 25, so they were in Missouri at least by
1825.

Notice the difference in the location of the marriage between these trees.
The McIvor tree reports the marriage place as Guilford County, North Carolina,
while the Peterson Tree says it was in Surry County, North Carolina. I
suspect that they have found a couple with similar names and reported them,
just assuming it was our John Brissell Horton and Nancy Anne Green from South
Carolina. There are records of the Hortons in connection with the Quaker
community in Guilford County. Both Gulford and Surry are in the northern area
of North Carolina, Surry is on the border with Virginia, while Meshack and his
family were down in Pendleton County, western South Carolina, near Georgia.

There is a name John Horton on the Cherokee list of those who signed the
treaty agreeing to exchange their present eastern lands for land He is listed
as #550 in the final emigration list. John Brissell Horton was 65 years old
at the time of the roll's compilation in 1817. Sheri Horton, who has
researched this aspect quite extensively, states that John Brissell Horton was
the only Horton in the area and he was the John Horton on that Cherokee list,
having lands through his Cherokee wife Nancy Ann Green, daughter of Meshack W
Green.

"In an attempt to save land that had been lost after the Creek War of 1813,
the Cherokee signed two more treaties in 1817 and 1819. The 1817 treaty was
the first Cherokee treaty that included a provision for their removal from
North Carolina lands. The treaty proposed exchanging Cherokee lands in the
Southeast for territory west of the Mississippi River. The government promised
assistance in resettling those Cherokees who chose to remove, and
approximately 1,500-2,000 did. The Treaty of 1817 also contained a proposal
for an experiment in Cherokee citizenship. Cherokees who wished to remain on
ceded land in the East could apply for a 640-acre reserve and legal rights as
American citizens."
-- Encyclopedia of North Carolina, NCPedia,
https://www.ncpedia.org/cherokee/revolutionarywar

John was among those who agreed to accept lands in Arkansas for his eastern
lands under the Cherokee tribe. Arkansas was at that time a part of New
Madrid District of the Louisiana Territory, which included part of the current
state of Missouri. They were settled in the eastern area of Arkansas on or
near the Mississippi River south of where the Arkansas River comes in to it.
There is still a town there called Cherokee Village, and some Arkansas
Cherokees. Most of the Cherokees there moved to Cherokee Nation when Indian
Territory was established after the 1830 removal from Georgia, Alabama and
Tennessee.

An entry from the New Garden Friends Meeting recods idicates that John was
dismissed becuse he married an Indian.

The following is reported of Abraham, but one wonders what marriage in 1778
they were referring to. Abraham would have been 56 at that time, and no
record has been found of him remarryin at that time. But Abraham's son John
married Nancy Green on 25 July 1778, the exact date of this dismissal from the
New Garden meeting. Thus it seems this Quaker action applyies to John
Brissell Horton.

"In 1769 Abraham Sr and his family moved to Surry County, North Carolina.
They were Quakers, and a number of Quaker families moved together. They
eventually formed a Quaker monthly meeting (church) at Westfield in Surry
County near Mt Airy. ... Dismissed from New Gardens monlthly Meeting of
Quakers, 25 July 1778 because he was 'married out of unity.'"
-- The Horton Connection, the descendants of Abraham Horton, Sr, Compiled by
Arnold Horton Wilson and Bonnie Imogene (Rains) Wilson, 1995

John's wife Nancy Anne Green was Cherokee or part Cherokee woman. Nancy Anne
was the daughter of Meshack W Green and Lucretia Franklin. Both Meshack and
Lucretia are varyingly reported as full-blood or part Cherokee. John Brissell
Horton did have Cherokee lands by virtue of his wife Nancy Anne. This was the
basis of his identification with other Cherokee citizens who signed the 1817
treaty to move to Arkansas, which was part of the New Madrid District of the
Lousiana Purchase.

After the report of dismissal, three was stll some business involving John
Horton, mentioned in the October1778 minutes of the New Garden Meeting. The
topic is not clear. But it involved some letter of denial, and John's
statement that he had complied wth something.

U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935

(North Carolina Yearly Meeting Yearly Meeting)
Residence Guilford, North Carolina
Due to the damage and discoloration on the original document, it isn't
discernible what the topic is concerning John Horton.

Several sources report that John Brissell Horton was buried in the Horton (or
Horton-Mackley) Cemetery in St Francois County, Missouri. But he is not
listed in the cemetery register I have found. He may have died in St Francois
County, but the cemetery of his reported burial is not in St Francois County,
but in neighboring Ste Genevieve County.

Perhaps this area now in Ste Genevieve County was originally a in larger St
Francois County that was later divided into smaller divisions. But John's
name is missing in two different transcription lists I have found for the
Horton-Mackley Cemetery in Ste Genevieve County.

Despite the fact that some genealogies specifically report that John died in
St Francois, St Francois, Missouri, I have found no record of any town or city
in Missouri named St Francois, or its English equivalent St Francis, in St
Francois County or any other county. It may have been an unincorporated
place, but does not come up in epodunk.com, either, which includes
unincorporated locations.

Notes for Joseph HORTON

One Horton researcher reports that Joseph Horton was the son of Abraham Horton
(1722-1816) and Martha B Williams (1726-1808). But the dates don't match for
such a relationship.

"one more bro Joseph b ca 1800"
-- Sheri Horton, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 20 October 2010

Joseph who was born in 1800 could not be the son of Abraham & Martha. Martha
would have been 74 if he was born in 1800. And other sources report he
married in 1801! The Joseph in mind must be a son of John B Horton and Nancy
Ann Green, born about 1780. That Joseph moved to Carroll County, Virginia.

Another genealogy by Janice K Smith reports his birth around 1780, but even
this was late for Abraham and Martha. Martha would have been 54 in 1780.
Smith reports the parents of Joseph Horton as John and Anna. But the same
source also says Joseph's father died in the Revolutionary War.

John B Horton was too young for that and signed the 1817 Cherokee Treaty with
the U S government, before moving to the west. John is reported to have died
in Missouri in 1827. There may be some question, but no documentation of
other earlier date has been found.

No further information has been found on Joseph Horton, son of Abraham and
Martha.

Notes for Joseph HORTON

Family Data Collection - Individual Records
Joseph Horton
Spouse Mary Webb
Parents Anna
Birth 1780 Surry County, NC
Marriage Date 26 Aug 1800
Death 22 Dec 1876 Carroll County, VA

This Family Data Collection reports Surry County, North Carolina, as Joseph's
place of birth. This is reinforced by the census reports of 1850, 1860 and
1870. However, the Virginia Deaths and Burials Index reports his birth and
death both in Virginia. The place of birth here is reported as Grayson
County, Virginia. This is also the location of his and Mary's marriage. This
report of birth in Virginia conflicts with virtually all other family facts.
But he could have been born in Grayson County, since this is the neighboring
county north of Surry across the border into Virginia.

Before their marriage Joseph had been living in the area of Fruit Hill, the
location of which is not clear. There was another meeting there referred to
as a preparative meeting. In November 1799, the minutes also refer to
Westfield Meeting as a Preparative Meeting, but the Fruit Hill and Chesnut
Hill metings are associated with Westfield, also as Preparative meeitngs.
(Westfield was later called New Garden, then Guilford College.) In their
November 1799 meeting, the Westfield group approved the transfer of Joesph
Horton's membership to the Fruit Hill meeting.

[It is not clear where Fruit Hill is (also referrred to in some minutes as
Fruithill.]
Westfield Preparative Monthly Meeting, Surry County, North Carolina, North
Carolina Yearly Meeting, Records p 192

Fruit HIll was in Virginia, across the border from Surry County where
Westfield was located.

"At this point let us point out the Quarterly Meetings of which Westfield
Monthly Meeting has been a part. It was originally founded in 1786 as a member
of the Western Quarterly Meeting. It was transferred to the newly organized
New Garden Quarterly Meeting in 1787. Within the next few years, Westfield
itself branched out and formed new Monthly Meetings at Lost Creek in Tennessee
in 1793, at New Hope in Tennessee in 1795, Mount Pleasant and Fruit Hill in
Virginia in 1797, at North Providence in 1801, and so in 1803 the Westfield
Quarterly Meeting set off."
-- "Westfield Meeting," Quakers RootsWeb,
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~quakers/westfield.htm

It is this Fruit Hill meeting that requested Westfield Meeting to confirm
their dismissal of Joseph for marrying contrary to their procedures. Joseph
Horton was censured for this marriage and dismissed from membership in the
Westfield Friends Monthly Meeting minutes in 1801. In November he is reported
and dismissed, and in the December 1801 meeting, a reference is made to a
report of the decision.

Westfield Preparative Monthly Meeting, North Carolina Yearly Meeting, Surry
County, North Carolina, Records p 220

The date of the Virginia marriage record is August 1800, but the censure and
dismissal did not occur until November 1801. Some have referenced the 1801
date as the date (year) of marriage, but the Virginia marriage records
indicate it was over a year before the Westfield Meeting acted on it.

The article below refers to the marriage as occurring in 1801, probably in
reference to the Quaker records, not the Virginia marriage record.

-----------------------
Mary WEBB was born about 1785. She died about 1876. She was also known as
Mary Horton. She was buried in Webb-Thompson Cm, Snake Creek, Carroll County,
Virginia.
Mary is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave at the Webb-Thompson
Cemetery.

Mary WEBB and Joseph HORTON were married in 1801 in Grayson County, Virginia.
Joseph HORTON (son of John HORTON and Anna (HORTON)) was born about 1780 in
Grayson County, Virginia. He died on 22 Dec 1875 in Carroll County, Virginia.
[Alternate date from some sources:] 12 He died on 22 Dec 1876. He was buried
in Webb-Thompson Cm, Snake Creek, Carroll County, Virginia.

Joseph Whorton and Mary Web on marriage register. Parents listed as John and
Anna on the death register. The conflict in death dates must be the two
different registers. Death register lists birth place as Grayson, not North
Carolina.

Joseph Horton was "born a Quaker and went from Westfield, N.C. to Carroll
County, Va., and was the first of the name to go to this county. He fought in
the War of 1812 and his father was killed in the Revolutionary War. [Other
sources report his father moved to Missouri and died there in 1827.] All of
his family left to go West and were never heard from again. It was thought
that they were killed by the Indians. I have heard my grandmother say that he
had to build fires around his flock of sheep to keep the wolves away, the
country was so wild and unsettled at that time. He married the daughter of
Henry Webb, the ancestor of the Snake Creek Webb family. I have heard my
grandmother recite the poem in which he asked Henry Webb for the hand of his
daughter, Mary.... When he married outside of the Quaker religion, he was
dropped from the meeting." (Tillinghast, Some Things I Learned)

They were dismissed from the Westfield Meeting in November 1801.

It is believed he spent most of his life with his in-laws and that he and Mary
are buried in the Webb-Thompson Cemetery on Snake Creek although there are no
grave markers. (Alderman, The Settlements, p.82)

The first records from the Snake Creek Primitive Baptist Church dated Sat.
Oct. 1848 (the first Saturday of the month) stated that Joseph Horton and his
wife Mary W. Horton were two of the thirty founders of the Snake Creek
Primitive Baptist Church. It is possible that they previously belonged to the
Laurel Fork Primitive Baptist Church. (from Archie Goad).
Joseph's death record says he was born in Grayson County. Most writers believe
he was from North Carolina.
