Notes for Nancy Ann HUBBARD

Records report that Nancy Ann Hubbard was a full blood Cherokee. This was
stated by her grandson Lafayette J Mullins, in his application to the Cherokee
Indian Rolls in 1908. Nancy Ann's marriage to John M Mullins (Sr) is recorded
in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in 1785.
-- Mike Taylor, http://www.mikeinkaty.com/ThomasMullinsDescendants.pdf

Based on this family information reported by Mike Taylor, Lafayette Mullins
and his brother George Ross Mullins (my ancestor) were 1/4 Cherokee.

BIRTH 1765 Virginia, USA
DEATH 1835 (aged 69-70) Cherokee County, Georgia, USA
BURIAL Non-Cemetery Burial, Specifically: No Burial Site found

Little is known of Nancy's family. It is believed she may be daughter of John
Hubbard found listed in the 1780 tax lists of Pittsylvania Co. VA there was a
John Hubbard living close to a John Mullins.

This John Hubbard refused to sign the oath of allegience to the new country.

Nancy married John Mullins January 1785 Pittsylvania County, Virginia, by:
Rev. Nathaniel Thurman.

Known Children are: John, Burton, Mary, and Jesse.

After John's death Nancy moved to Cherokee County, Georgia where she is listed
in court records.

Nancy was found in the 1834 Georgia State Census listed as a "Widow", with 4
persons in the household.
John Mullins was living nearby. Another son, Burton, was also living next to
John and Nancy.

DEED dated Cherokee County 06-Nov-1834, recorded 17-Oct 1835 from NANCY ANN
MULLINS of Cherokee County to JOHN MULLINS of Cherokee County.

In consideration of natural love, and affection toward her son, JOHN MULLINS,
conveys one undivided equal
one-half interest in that tract of land known a Land Lot 308, 14th District,
2nd Section, to take effect and operate at her death and not before.

Signed: NANCY ANN MULLINS ("X").
Witness: JOHN WHEELER and MOSES PURKINS.
Sworn by JOHN WHEELER before WILLIAM GRISHAM, Notary Public.

A court record exists showing Nancy purchasing the above track of land in
1834. This record states Nancy and Burton both reside in Meriwether Co.
Georgia.

The other half of the above 160 acres was given to Burton. On 01 DEC 1835,
John and Burton divided the 160 acres in half, each taking 80 acres.

On that same day, John's half was sold at a sherrif's auction to settle debts
owed by John to people in Hall County. This 160 acre track was located in
present day Cherokee County, according to the lot description.

Nancy died shortly after this land was sold.

Notes for Charles Robert HUDSON

In all the census records Robert is reported as Robert or Robert C. This
surely indicates he went by the name Robert. But this was actually his middle
name. His full name was Charlie Robert, reported on his death certificate by
his daughter Veda Nail. The Texas Death Index thus lists him not as Charles,
but Charlie. And it is likely this was his original name, not Charles, as we
find in many other cases from this period through the 20th century. Another
clue to the proper order of his names is found on the gravestone of his infant
son, Oscar. Oscar's epitaph on his grave in Johnson Cemetery, Stonewall
County, Texas, reads:
"Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Hudson"

The death certificate of Charlie Robert Hudson reports that his father was
Bill Hudson, which matches the reports in censuses. His mother is reported as
Laura Buford, who would be his step mother. We find his father was a widow
with Robert and the other children in 1910, then in 1920 is married to the
much younger "Lara."

Charlie was a Railroad worker, his responsibilities not further specified in
the death certificate. His birth date is given there as 15 July 1895. This
differs form the date reported on his WWI registration, 13 July 1895. Since
he himself would have reported the date on the Draft registration record, I am
using that as his date of birth.

In the 1910 census, 14-year-old Robert is in the household of his grandparents
along with his widowed father Will (William, also known as Bill L) and all his
siblings.

Robert's WWI Draft Registration record gives us some information about his
origins.

Robert Hudson, born 13 Jul 1895 Fort Stockton, Texas, residence Aspermont,
Stonewall County, Texas; Occupation Farming; Family: wife and one child [names
not given]; Registration 5 June 1917 in Precinct 4, Stonewall County, Texas

In 1920, Robert is recorded with his new wife Nora, Elnorah Ethyl Barnett, a
month after the birth of their first child in Stonewall County, Texas. They
are sharing a household with Nora's invalid father Francis and her older
sister Mollie Priscilla, who never married.

Beauford, Ervin J Head [Status of home/farm not stated] M W 24 Married TX
TX TX General Laborer
Beauford, Alma C Wife F W 18 Married MO IL KY ("Contucky") No Occupation

From the information on his step mother, we can figure that the name Beauford
is a spelling for Buford, indicating this Ervin is probably his step brother
or cousin. Beauford (pronounced Bow-ford) is likely the original name of
Laura's family, which as other French names, came to be changed in Buford (as
in beautiful).

Also in their household in 1920 is another couple Ervin (Irvin) and Alma C
Beauford. These two couples later move together to Douglas, Cochise County,
Arizona, and are living next door to each other while both men work in a lime
quarry. This move occurred after about 1925, when Charlie Robert's son R B
was born in Texas.

In 1930, Robert has moved his family to Cochise County, Arizona, near Douglas.
Robert and all the neighbors on this census page are working at a lime quarry.
Since their son Clint Lamont, age 8 in the 1930 census, was born in Texas,
they moved to Arizona in late 1922 or later.

The 1930 census reports two children as Gertie's sons by her first mariage. I
have not seen the record of that marriage to a Hudson. In the 1920 census,
Otto and Daniel were reproted as sons of Archie with the name Brown. In the
list of children below, Daisy is the daughter of Daisy V Kemp Brown. The
younger children are Gertie's children.

Because of this information, I can deduce that Orin is Gertie's son. This
would explain the close ages reports in the 1920 census compared with the
children of the 1910 census. (See Notes for Archie Brown.)

George, at age 10 in 1920, could be Lester, age 4 months in 1910. Since
Lester would be 10 years and a few months, he should still be in the home, so
I will consider that George and Lester are the same child of Daisy V.

Geneva's death certificate gives her mother's name as Beauford. This matches
a marriage records of W L Hudson and Minnie L Beauford in 1894. It appears,
however, that her father Bill's second wife was also maiden named Beauford,
and the name reported in the 1920 census is similar, Lara M, which could be
the same names in a different order. But the wife in the 1920 census is a
second wife, because Bill is reported as a widower in the 1910 census, living
with his parents along with all his children.

Notes for Mary Elizabeth HUDSON

Mary Hudson is reported in several genealogies as the mother or the stepmother
of John B Barnett, of Georgia and Mississippi, but dates do not fit for Mary
Elizabeth's husband to be the father of John B Barnett, who married Minerva
Owens, grand-niece of Cherokee Chief John Ross.

-- Toni Boren, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/28227842/person/12542351279

John Henry Barnett's birth date reported above off his grave is impossible for
the father of John B Barnett, given the details we know about John B Barnett's
life. John B's census ages make his birth about 1822-1824, but one makes it
about 1815. The report of John B's participation in the Seminolian Wars (in
about 1836-38) also makes it unlikely he was born much later than about 1820.
It makes me think the wrong grave has been referenced, for another John Henry
Barnett, instead of the John H Barnett who was the father of John B Barnett
who married Minerva Owens. John B's parents seem to be John H Barnett, born
in Virginia, and Elizabeth Robertson, born in Georgia, where John B was born.
