I got the full name of Veda Hudson from Barbara Stevens, who has gathered much
information on the Barnett and Hudson families. She reports Veda's birth date
from her death certificate as 25 April 1919. This matches the report I had
previously found on the family. We see here that she was reported as 11 month
old in the 1920 census. In 1930 she is reported as 11 years old.

Notes for William L HUDSON

There is a marriage record for a W L Hudson in Pecos County, Texas, marrying a
Minnie L Beauford. Beauford is also the maiden name of William's second wife,
one Lara M. But the date of this marriage is 27 July 1894, and Bill did not
marry Lara until after the 1910 census, when William (Bill) is a widower.
Pecos County is also far out west, in Reeves County, comparatively close to El
Paso.

Texas Marriage Collection, 1814-1909 and 1966-2002
W. L. Hudson
Gender: Male
Marriage 27 Jul 1894 Pecos [Reeves County], Texas
Spouse: Minnie L. Beauford

The California death record of Bill's daughter Geneva Anna reports her
mother's maiden name Beauford, strengthening the likelihood that the above
marriage record is the correct one.

In 1910, William (Bill/Will) Hudson is recorded as a widower, living with his
parents. He has all his children in the household with him.

1910 Federal Census, Walker County, Texas, 5 May, Justice Precinct 2, District

Hudson, Frank Head M W 73 Single AL AL AL Farmer [No land ownership]

Hudson, Elisabeth Wife F W 67 Married 55 years 11 children/6 living VA VA VA
Hudson, Will Son M W 43 Widowed TX TN VA Farmer [No land ownership]
Hudson, Robert Grandson M W 14 TX TX TX
[Other reported children not included here]

James' brother Frank is also living in the household, although Ancestry.com
misses him, probably because the enumerator recorded the brother first, but on
the line above the House and Family number. There is a line drawn above the
brother's name to highlight the intention to include him in the following
family. James is listed as the head, but with no occupation. His brother
Will is shown as a Farmer. Their father James is also reported as Head.

The enumeration of Bill L Hudson and his family indicates that his wife Lara
is his second wife, judging by the age of the children in the house, the large
discrepancy of her age (38) and his (61) and the age of Bill's oldest son,
24-year-old Robert, living next door in the household of Robert's wife's
father Francis Marion Barnett.

1920 Federal Census, Stonewall County, Texas, 7 March, Commissioner's Precinct

Hudson, Olif A Son M W 3 TX TX TX
Hudson, Geniva A Dau F W 16 TX TX TX
Hudson, Sadie M Dau F W 9 TX TX TX

I presume from the general configuration of the family that Olif (Olaf?) is
the only child of Lara. She is old enough that even Bill E could be her
child, but that would mean she was 15 at most when he was born, while Bill L
was about 48. While not impossible, this seems unlikely. For 16-year-old
Geniva (Geneva?), it is not possible for Lara to be her mother, but Lara could
be Sadie's mother. Bill and Lara could have married soon after the 1920
census.

Further, if Geneva is Bill's child with his first wife, where was Geneva in
the 1910 census? She should be about 6 years old, but there is no child
around that age by any name. I did not retain a copy of the image of the 1910
census, and cannot get it to turn up in a current search.

Next door we find a household with three surnames, Barnett, Hudson and
Beauford. We know that Nora Hudson is the daughter of F M Barnett.

At first I thought that Alma C Beauford might be Robert C Hudson's sister.
But she was born in Missouri, so this does not seem likely, since Bill L
Hudson was born in Texas and still lives there. Alma's parents were born in
Illinois and Kentucky (1920) or in Missouri and Illinois (1930). Whatever the
relationship between the two young families, the Beauford couple moved with
Robert and Nora to Arizona before the 1930 census. Bill's daughter Anna also
moved west, going on to California.

Notes for Notsure HUGHES

There is incomplete information in the historical sources on the wives of Isom
(Isham) Terry. Isom is unmarried in the 1850 census and in his parents' home.
The mother of one of his daughter Mary is reported as a Hughes whose first
name is unknown. Mary was born in 1857.

Mary Terry Woodard
Birth Mar. 20, 1857 Kentucky
Death Apr. 1, 1881
Father Isom Terry
Mother Unknown Hughes
Burial Fort Douglas Cemetery, Fort Douglas, Johnson County, Arkansas
-- Find A Grave Memorial #112245708,
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Woodard&GSiman=1&GScid=2221327&GRid=112245708&

In the 1860 census, Isom's wife is Ceatta Terry. This appears to be the
Ceatta Slone whose family was living nearby in the 1850 census, among the
Terry households and next door to Isom's brother William.

Some genealogies report Mary as Mary E, born in 1857. This date matches her
age in this 1860 census. One of two memorials for Mary on Find a Grave
states that her mother was Unknown Hughes. The time of her birth, with only
the wife in the 1860 census at the time, we surmised for some time that Ceatta
was the wife surnamed Hughes. But it seems firm, from two famly lines now,
that Ceatta's name was Slone.

"I have started wondering if Isom was married to Seatha Slone. They live very
near each other in the 1850 Floyd County census, but of more interest to me is
an old letter written by a grandson of Isom, stating he was married four or
five times, once to a Sloan and once to a Hughes."
-- Barbara Nelson, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 2 June 2013

Family tradition reports through two descendants that this was Ceatta (or
Seatha) Slone. So it appears that Isom was married before the 1860 census to
a woman named Hughes, then before the census married Ceatta. In the 1880
census there is a Hughes family living a few doors away from Isom and his
family. So we know there was also a Hughes family nearby in Floyd County,
Kentucky

Since the mother of Mary is reported as named Hughes, what we know seems to
indicate that Isom married his first wife named Hughes before the birth of the
first two daughters. The 1860 census reprots that in 1860 Rachel was 7 years
old, thus born aoround 1853. Mary was 3 years old, born about 1857. The next
child Caroline is 1 year old, so born about 1859. It looks like Rachel and
Mary's mother (maiden name Hughes) died about1857 or 1858, after the death of
Mary. Then about 1858, Isom married Seatha/Ceatta Slone.

No death information has been found for this Hughes wife. We are assuming she
died before Isom married Ceatta Slone in about 1858.

One genealogy reports William's full name as William Isom Davis Terry.
Accounting for the second given name Davis, this genealogy also reports that
William's mother was Celia "Sealy" Davis. Other facts, including those
discussed above, indicate that WIlliam's father Isom Terry did not marry Sealy
Davis until 1874, who was his 4th wife. This was 19 years after even this
genealogy reports WIlliam was born! But this Moulder tree has Celia as the
only wife of Isom, when family sources report reference to 5 wives, and we
have the names of 4. Furtrher, the Moulder tree reports that Isom married
Celia Davis in 1850, while we have their marriage record from 1874 under her
later married name Hanley.
-- Moulder, http://person.ancestry.com/tree/49953487/person/28209421411/facts

Perhaps there was a second son named William at that late stage, whose middle
name was in fact Davis. No record we have seen has a middle name for this
William born in 1855, whose birth date puts him in place as the first child of
Isom and his first wife surnamed Hughes, whose given name has not been
discovered.
