I found a discrepancy in Dorothy's birth date between the Texas Death Index and the date reported by Dorothy's brother James. The Death Index reports the child was born on 7 July 1929, while James (her brother) reported in April 2010 that her birthday was 6 July 1929. I got the information on Earl Jackson from James Jackson, a grandson of George Jerome Jackson, Earl's brother. I did not have this name in my data as a child of James T Jackson, but I found my cousin Marion Mixon had this child in his database. James reports Earl as a twin of Pearl A Jackson, whom I reported from census and family records. After getting this information, I searched for matching Texas Death records and found a record for "Inf of Jim Jackson" with a death date of 7 February 1919 in Parker County. This matches the parentage and the year of death 1919 reported by James Jackson, and Parker County is the right place. Several genealogies report Edward's paretns as Rev William H Jackson and Della Melton. There are burials matching their names and dates in the Elmwood Cemetery, where Edward's wife is also buried. Ironically, there is no memorial there for Edward. Edward passed away before the family moved on west to Palo Pinto County. His parents came from Mississippi, he was born in Arkansas, and he married in east Texas, where his children were born in Nacogdoches County, Texas. They were living in Trawick in 1918, when he registered for the WWI draft on 12 September. His grave says he died in 1918, so it was some time after 12 September in 1918. 1910 Federal Census, Nacogdoches County, Texas, 18 April, Justice Precinct 7, District 104, page 2B, Douglas Rd, Hse/Fam #40 Jackson, Edward L Head M W 26 Married 5 yrs AR MS MS Farmer Owns Jackson, Neshia A Wife F W 24 Married 5 yrs 3 children/3 living TX AL TX Jackson, Erma L Dau F W 4 Single TX AR TX Jackson, Alma Dau F W 2 Single TX AR TX Jackson, Hugh Son M W 9mos TX AR TX In 1918, Edward and his wife were living in the community of Trawick, Texas in Nacogdoches County. Now with a population of around a hundred, the number of residents peaked at 300 in 1929 when the economy - based on cotton - was thriving." -- Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trawick,_Texas -------------------------------- The community is said to be founded shortly after the turn of the century with the arrival of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. Namesake John R. Trawick was a resident who donated land so that the community could be platted. In 1902 the community was granted a post office. Two years later, the first school was built. Trawick had 100 residents by 1914 and tripled by 1929. But the economy was based on cotton production and when prices fell and the boll weevil arrived, Trawick felt the impact greatly. Trawick had 100 residents in the mid 1930s, where it has remained through the year 2000. -- Texas Escapes, http://texasescapes.com/EastTexasTowns/Trawick-Texas.htm -------------------------------- World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Edward Lee Jackson Residence Trawick, Nacogdoches County, Texas Birth Date: 5 Apr 1884 Occupation Farmer Wife Nitia Jackson, Trawick, Nacogdoches County, Texas Medium Height and Build, Blue Eyes, Brown Hair Registered 12 Sept 1918 Note that in his WWI draft registration, Edward spells his wife's name Nitia. The whole card appears to be in his own handwriting, matching his signature. Two or three genealogies I have seen spell her name Nishia or Neshia, perhaps following the census records. The common pronunciation of Nitia would be Nisha. Edward died some time after this registration, in the year 1918, according to his gravestone. The family sources report he died and she married James Toliver Jackson both about 1899. Thus it seems the census should have reported these girls as step-daughters of Jackson. Perhaps he had already adopted them by the time of the 1900 census. Eliza Jane died in 1908 and in 1909 James married Lizzie Griffith, thus Effie's stepmother, reported in the 1910 census above as the wfe of J T Jackson.

The details for Enoch Avery Jackson match closely the information sometimes found under the name of Ernie Abraham Jackson. Some genealogies have this person entered as Enoch Abraham Jackson. It appears this same person is referred to under both names, Ernie and Enoch. In letters to Linda Hanks, Enoch's niece Betty Jackson Hess refers to him as Uncle Ean. This appears to be a nickname, pronounced Ene (Een), short for Enoch. Her comments match what we know about Enoch Abraham. Lucille Brinkley Mixon (died 1993) also calls Enoch "Uncle Ean" in a letter (Unknown date) to Linda Martin Hanks, which Linda has given to Lucille's daughter Beverly Mixon Hill. Later Beverly obtained a cassette tape interview of Lloyd (date or interviewer unknown) in which Lloyd also says his grandfather was called Ean, but his real name was Enoch Avery. "Ean, E-A-N. ... Really his name was Enoch Avery. That was his real name, but he was always called Ean." -- Lloyd Jackson Cassette tape interview, Interviewer Paul Jackson, 14 December 1983, transcribed by Orville Boyd Jenkins 23 February 2012 The WWI Draft Registration with information on this person is hard to read, being faded in streaks. Ancestry.com transcribes the name as Ernie Abraham Jackson. But it could just as well be Enoch. Jackson researcher Kati Jackson Cain says from her analysis that the name looks as though it is written Enic. Incidentally, the middle name in the draft registration is spelled Abriham. The signature is wild and scrawling, and has marks unlike either name, except for the first A. This is very interesting, since his grandson Lloyd says his name was Enoch Avery. This would mean Ean was named after one of his mother's brothers, Avery Gracy, according to Ean's grandson Lloyd in a recorded interview near the end of his life. But the middle name of Abraham would mean he was named after his paternal great grandfather, Abraham Jackson. Could Ean himself have gotten confused and given his name to the military registrar as Enoch Abraham? Could his own grandson have got Ean's middle name wrong? The draft registration information on Enic/Enoc Abriham Jackson describes the person we have found in the censuses under the name of Enoch A Jackson, and his wife Mary Francis Gracy. This record is unique in having the middle name as Abraham instead of Avery. US WWI Draft Registration Enic (Enoch) Abriham Jackson Age 42, Born Oct 1, 1876 [place not given] Residence in Pike, Love County, Oklahoma Farmer, Nearest Relative (wife) Mary Francis Jackson, Pike, Love, Okla. Medium Height, Slender, Brown Eyes, Dark Hair Registered 12 September 1918 Marietta, Love County, Oklahoma Signed Enoc Abra (?) Jackson The signature appears to be Enoc [with no H], faded in places. The middle and last names are scrawled and somewhat faded, but fit the contours of Abraham Jackson. The second letter of the middle name looks tall, and could be a b. The signature looks something like: Enoc Abra Jackson. researchers have not been able to determine why this record would have his middle name as Abraham. It is especially puzzling, since it appears that Enoch intended to sign with the middle name Abraham. This date of birth differs from that on his gravestone, which reports October 1877. The 1900 census agrees with the Draft Registration, reporting October 1876. In 1900, he is reported as born in Texas, but in 1910, his birthplace has changed to Oklahoma. Other details indicate this is our same Enoch A Jackson, but I cannot account for this change of place. This happens with various individuals. It could be due to enumerator error or mis-reporting by the person (either intentional, or due to lack of attention, or poor memory or focus on such details). 1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 4 June, F1 Township 8SR1, District 151, p 2, Hse/Fam #17, In home of father-in-law Wylie Gracy: Jackson, Enoch A Son-in-law W M Oct 1876 23 Married less than 1 yr TX GA GA Farmer wife: Mary F Daughter W F June 1883 16 Married less than 1 yr TXTN TX In this census, Enoch and Mary have been married 0 years. Several genealogies, while using our report of his birth in Chickasaw Nation, and probably in Marietta, report that Enoch died in Oklahoma City, but provide no source information or comment. Enoch's grandson Lloyd Jackson tells of going with his father to search for a grave of "Papa's daddy." Lloyd's father was William F Jackson, Enoch's son. The references around that story seem to indicate they were actually searching for his father's grandfather's grave. That would be Abraham Jackson, William's father. "Papa's daddy died when he was 3 or 4, out in Oklahoma. He's buried somewhere back in there in Love County. I've been with my daddy and tried to find his grave. We never did. That little graveyard way back down along in them woods somewhere. He was an old confederate soldier." -- Lloyd Jackson Cassette tape interview, Interviewer unknown, 14 December 1983, transcribed by Orville Boyd Jenkins 23 February 2012 This reference to Papa at first confused me. I was not familiar with the term Papa for a grandfather, but later I began to hear it in other current situations. The reference to "Papa's daddy" dying when "papa" was 3 or 4 sounds like a reference to Enoch's father Abraham, who died soon after Enoch's birth in 1877. Note that Enoch says here that "Papa's daddy" was an "old confederate soldier." It seems likely Lloyd is thinking of the grave of William's grandfather Abraham, which has not been located. Lloyd's grandfather Enoch was buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, near Marietta, Love County, Oklahoma, where other members of the Jackson family are buried. Details from Enoch's grave are: Enoch Avery Jackson Birth Oct 1, 1877 Oklahoma, USA Death Sep 12, 1927 Love County, Oklahoma Spouse Mary Frances Gracey Jackson (1882 - 1938) Children: E A Jackson 1901-1901 William F Jackson 1902-1985 John Wesley Jackson 1905-1936 Jeff Gardner Jackson 1913-1995 Ethel Beatrice Jackson Sloan 1916-1999 Lee Woo Jackson 1919-1983 Buried Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, Love County, Oklahoma Created by Phil & Donna Whitaker May 05, 2006 -- Find A Grave Memorial #14181271, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=14181271 "Enoch Abraham, and wife are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Love County. This source was retrieved and a transcription provided by cousin Kati Jackson Cain on 26 May 2014. "E.A. Jackson of Oswalt, 50 years old died after a lingering illness of several months. Last Monday [12 Sept 1827, same day reported as date of death] he was buried in Lake View Cemetery. Deceased leaves a wife and five children." -- The Marietta Monitor, September 16, 1927 [Friday] These references report that E A died on 12 September 1927 (a Monday), and the last item from the Marietta Monitor reports he was buried on "last Monday", which would be 12 September 1927. But researcher Kati Cain reports that his death certificate reports the death date as 10 September 1927. The cemetery may have recorded the burial date as the death date, or the stonecutters may have referenced the wrong date when cutting the stone. Kati obtained a copy of the Death Certificate from the Oklahoma Board of Health. Very few fields are filled out on the death certificate. The undertaker filled out the certificate, dates of attendance by a physician are reported, but on the physician's signature line, there is written "Unknown." t is interesting that the undertaker is the same person as the Registrar of the certificate. Since the undertaker filled out the certificate, it is puzzling why the name of the cemetery is wrong. It reports he was buried in the Oswalt Cemetery, when in fact he is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in Marietta, several miles to the east. Jackson and Green relatives lived in both places and in other nearby locations in Love County and adjoining Cooke County, Texas, across the Red River to the southwest.
