But I note that his birth date is reported here as in 1867, while in the 1870 census he was reported as 7 years old, meaning born about 1863. His mother's name matches, though the last name is spelled Hight, rather than Hyatt. But his father's name is Shadrick, while in the 1860 census, Anna Hyatt's husband was reported as Moses A Jackson. Some genealogies also report Shadrick as Anna's husband, probably following similar Maynard family information. Family names and places often get mangled in frontier families. Also, maybe Moses A had another name like Shadrick/Shadrack. But here also, the states of birth are wrong, since Celestine Maynard reports that they were both born in Texas. The 1860 census for Moses reports he was born in Illinois, and the 1860 and 1870 censuses both for Anna report she was born in Indiana. These are the kinds of details that we see commonly erroneous or confused when the informant is a child in law. George Jerome Jackson is normally reported in public records simply as George. From George's birth date we can determine that his mother is Elizabeth Jane Tate, who died in 1908. I have not been able to find any Texas Marriage record for his first marriage to Addie Katherine Miller. They married about 1923, based on the 1930 census report that they married when Addie was 14. Their first child, Jewel C, was born in 1925. In 1969, he married widow Mollie Morgan Green. The record of this marriage is online. I had some difficulty finding the records of George's birth and death. Before finding the public record, I knew he had died before 1981. In the obituary of his half-brother Jimmie Lee Jackson in 1981, George is not mentioned as a survivor. A cousin and research partner, Wanda Cox, located the 1910 census for James Toliver Jackson and his family. For some reason it had been hiding from me. In that census George is 7. So he was born in about 1902. This census does not tell us the state in which George was born, reporting his birth place only as US, and both his parents likewise. The 1920 census, when he was reported as 15 years old, reports he was born in Texas. Note that they are living in Parker County in both these censuses. But his obituary says he was born in Oklahoma. Family researchers had thought he was born in Weatherford. 1910 Federal Census, Parker County, Texas, 22 June, Weatherford Ward 1, District 66, page 8A, 912 N Rusk St, Hse #160, Fam #161 Jackson J T Head M W [no age] 2nd marriage Married 0 years no birth info Rents Home Jackson Lizzie (Griffith) Wife F W 23 1st marriage Married 0 years 0 children TX TX TX George Jackson Son M W 7 US US US This census age information matches a listing in the Social Security Death Index for a George Jackson in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas: 28 November 1902 Social Security Death Index George Jackson Born 28 Nov 1902, Died Mar 1973 Last Residence Weatherford, Parker, Texas 76086 SSN 462-22-6256 issued Texas (Before 1951). James sent us copies of several old handwritten family records he had collected. One of these was a list of birth dates. George Jackson is reported as born 28 November 1902, confirming that the two official records above are for our George Jerome Jackson. In the 1930 census, J M is reported as 3 months old, which would mean he was born in December 1929. Some directory listings for a J M Jackson, in Ringling, which is near other members of his famliy, reports his birth date as in June 1929. His birth date on his grave matches with an exact birth date of 25 June 1929. His obituary reports he was born in Vinson, which is in Harmon County, Oklahoma. Harmon County is on Oklahoma's western border with the Texas panhandle. "Vinson is an unincorporated community in Harmon County, Oklahoma, United States. The community was named for Henry B. From the 1860 census, James appears to be a brother of Abraham Jackson, husband of Talitha Green. In that census, James is in the same family group with Abe and Talitha. He is 2 years younger than Abe. This family group of 3 is further living int he same household with Moses A Jackson, age 31. Though this census reports that Moses is born in Illinois, while we are told Abe and James are born on Alabama, it seems likely Moses is also part of the same family. Form the age and same household, it would be likely that Moses is a brother also. The birth in a different state might indicate a stage int he family's migration to Alabama from Illinois, before some members moved on to Texas. 1860 Federal Census, Cooke County, Texas, 21 July, Gainesville, page 58 (scan 253), Hse #484, Fam #561 Moses A Jackson 31 M Farmer $320 real estate $130 personal b Illinois Anna Jackson 21 F b Indiana Charlotte Jackson 3 F b Texas James Jackson 3 M b Texas Rhoda Jackson mos F b Texas [abt Jan 1860] 1860 Federal Census, Cooke County, Texas, 21 July, Gainesville, page 59 (scan 254), Hse #484, Fam #62 A Jackson 23 M Farmer born Alabama Talitha Jackson 17 born Georgia James Jackson 25 M born Alabama There are many Jackson lines in Texas and Indian Territory from different origins, making it difficult to sort origins and connect family members. Some have erroneously connected Abe to another line of Jacksons in Montgomery Alabama, in the family of Abraham B.

A death record in the 1850 census for an Andrew Jackson seems to match the basic facts for our James A Jackson pretty closely, but the transcription reports that Andrew Jackson died in July 1850. This could be a transcription error (the image is not viewable on Ancestry.com, only their transcription report). Note that this census mortality schedules from the 1850 census record reports he was born in Kentucky rather than Indiana (across the river). This could still be the same person, since state of birth often varies in reports. The location is the right place but without seeing the actual census, I am not sure. Linda Hanks reports the birth of James Toliver Jackson as being in Oklahoma, but no location specified. Butch Mixon reports the birth place as Hill County, Texas. The latter matches the birth place of his cousin Toliver Jorile Green. It makes sense that the Jacksons would have been in Hill County with their relatives. Hill County is not far from Parker County, where James T and his family are well-documented. The death certificate reports his birth place as Hill County, Texas. There is some indication, though not firm evidence, that James Toliver's parents Abe and Talitha (Delitha) Green Jackson were in eastern Oklahoma in the early 1870s. It had seemed from the place of birth in Hill County that they returned to Texas, though details have been difficult to document. Further details are needed to resolve their whereabouts. The census in 1900 reports two children, Effie born Jan 1894 and Bessie born Jun 1896. Family sources indicate these girls are the daughters of Jackson's brother William D Jackson, the first husband of Elizabeth Jane Tate. The family sources report he died and she married James Toliver Jackson both about 1899. Thus it seems the census should have reported these girls as step-daughters of Jackson. Perhaps he had already adopted them by the time of the 1900 census. The two other people listed in the household as Boarders are also family members. Martha A Glanton is Eliza's sister Martha Ann Tate, who married Frank Glanton. Frank was her second husband, as she was widowed earlier by her first husband Nathan Bullard, Jr. She is again a widow in 1900. Carley Glanton, reported her as born in May 1899, is reported by one genealogy as Charlie. Martha Ann's son 7-year-old Henry Bullard is living a few houses away with her father and step-mother, James Henry and Martha L Tate. Lizzie Tate died in 1908. Jackson James Toliver Obituary ------------------------------------------------------ James T Jackson Dies Suddenly Friday Morning James Tolbert [should be Toliver], age 69 years, one months and 20 days, died suddenly Friday Morning [25 April 1941] about 11 o'clock at his home some five miles southwest of the city. Mr Jackson was born in Hill county, Texas, March 5, 1872. He had lived in other parts of the state before coming to Parker county six months ago. Surviving are his wife and seven children as follows: Mrs Bettie Hess, Donna, Texas; George Jackson, Donna; Mrs Marie Cohron and Mrs Pauline Cohron, both of Throckmorton; Jimmie Jackson and Mrs Pearl Askins at home; and J C Jackson, Donna. There are also surviving one brother, Sam Jackson of California; and one sister, Mrs Fannie Brankley [sic] of Garner, this county. Funeral arrangements are pending. [sic, but see next paragraph] The funeral services were held from the Cotten-Bratten Funeral Chapel Sunday afternoon [27 April 1941] at 1:30 o'clock, with Rev N L Roberts, pastor of the North Side Baptist Church, officiating. Burial took place in the Curtis Cemetery one mile south of town. -- The Weatherford Democrat, Weatherford, Parker, Texas, [no date or page info included in the copy provided, seems to be Monday, 28 April 1941] ------------------------------------------------------ Some helpful family information is provdied here. At the time of his death, three of his children were living in Donna, Texas, on the Mexican border. Perhaps this is where J T was living before lhe moved back to Weatherford. Living in Donna were Betty Jackson Hess, George Jackson, and J C Jackson. His daughters Marie Jackson Cohron and Pauline Jackson Cohron were iving at Throckmorton, Texas, at that time. The obituary refers to Jimmie Jackson and Pearl (Jackson) Askins as "at home," which I take to mean in Weatherford. This phrase may mean that they and their parents were living together. James' wife (oddly unnamed in the obituary) is also reported as a survivor. His home was five miles south of the city, according to the obituary. We also note that he had moved to Weatherford only 6 months before his death. Cindy Beam had obtained a copy of Jackson's obituary from family sources. But the clipping did not have the name of the paper of the date of the issue. It appears this obituary was published in the Monday newspaper in Weatherford. I realized Butch had earlier sent me the Ancestry transcription summary of JT's death information. Correlating the info we had, here is the way I worked out the information related to the death and burial of JT. The only dating given in the Obit was that Jackson had "died suddenly Friday morning about 11 o'clock." Listings of marriage licenses on that page (the part that shows in the scan) are dated through 26 April. This would be Saturday, which makes sense. Government offices operated on Saturdays back then. The date of death we have from family info is 25 April 1941. I consulted a 1941 calendar, and determined that in that series of dates 25 April 1941 was a Friday. Thus I would have expected the obit to be published the next publishing day, Sunday. However, I notice there is an announcement that the funeral was conducted on Sunday afternoon. This paper must have been the Monday edition. That Sunday would have been 27 April 1941, which gives us the burial date! I notice the place of burial is Curtis Cemetery, which matches a reference by Bettie Jackson, Jackson's daughter, that her mother and her mother's sister were buried in Curtis Cemetery in Weatherford. I notice an editing error in the obit. There is a line that says: "Funeral arrangements are pending." This is immediately followed by the news of the funeral service which had ALREADY BEEN CONDUCTED. I suspect there was a first obit in the Saturday or Sunday paper, stating that the arrangements were not finalized (Or possibly in the Saturday paper). This final obit is not an announcement of the funeral, but the news that it has already been held. This makes it likely that on Friday (night or afternoon, when the Saturday paper had to be ready for Saturday morning release) the arrangements had not been made. But arrangements were finalized on Saturday (and possibly in time for the Sunday morning paper, to let people know of the Sunday afternoon service). Since the obit reports the Sunday funeral as already conducted, it is likely that this article appeared in the Monday paper. As for the name of the paper, it seemed likely that was the Weatherford Democrat, the current paper. I have found no information indicating a previous name or another paper. Marion (Butch) Mixon, a cousin working with me on the Jackson-Green lineages and a nephew of James Toliver, also says the paper would be the Democrat. This is a good circumstantial documentation of the dates: Death Friday, 25 April 1941 Initial obit in the Weatherford Democrat: Saturday, 26 April or Sunday, 27 April 1941 (this accounts for the stray line saying funeral arrangements are pending; they should have deleted this line for the Monday edition reporting the funeral) Funeral and burial: Sunday, 27 April 1941 Final obit in the Weatherford Democrat: Monday, 28 April 1941 James' obituary and death certificate report his name as James Tolbert, although members of the family consistently understand his name to have been Toliver, named after his grandfather Toliver Green. We do not know how the coroner and the paper got the wrong name. Information on the marriage of James Toliver Jackson to Elizabeth Tate comes from family notes and letters from Bettie Jackson to Linda Hanks. Elizabeth Tate married James Toliver after the death of her first husband William D Jackson, who was James Tolliver's brother. Copies of family letters in possession of Linda (Martin) Hanks and Cindy (Mixon) Beam. Information received through Marion Butch Mixon, Cindy's brother. A genealogy in the One World Tree on Ancestry.com had information on the marriage and family of James and Elizabeth. This information seems valid from what else we know about them.
