Notes for William JACKSON

Ohio Soldiers in WWI, 1917-1918
William Jackson
Age: 21 5/12 Years
Birth abt 1896 Montgomery, Alabama, USA
Enlistment 2 Jun 1917 Cleveland, Ohio
National Guard
Co G 5 Infantry ONG (Co G 145 Infantry) to 11 May 1918
Headquarters Company 145 Infantry to 7 June 1918
155 Depot Brigade to Discharge Sergeant 24 Aug 1918
Honorable discharge 7 Feb 1919.

His age given in the enlistment record working back from his date of
enlistment would place his birth date in about January 1896. This matches his
age in the 1920 census, at age 24, or born about 1896. In 1940 William is
reported as 42, which would place birth in about 1888. The latter must be in
error, in light of the two earlier reports. But the WWII enlistment reports
his birth date almost two years later, at 27 Dec 1897 (see below), which would
match in rounded years with the 1940 census just two year before.

Paul McDaniel reports a family tradition that William ran away at age 16 to
join the army.

"William ran away from home at 16 and lied about his age to get into the Army.
That kind of explains the difference in age with the census. In this case, it
seems the census has the correct age as opposed to military records."
-- Paul McDaniel, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 March 2013

If the WWII record really reports his correct birth date, then from his real
birth date, he would have been 19 years and 5 months old when he enlisted for
WWII, not 16 as the family tradition remembers. I am not sure why he would
have needed to report himself older. Wasn't 18 the enlistment age for WWI?

In July 1919, William married for the first time, to Anna McQuaid.

Anna had two children before she passed away. One genealogy shows one child
of Anna named Lillian, born in 1920, but gives no documentation. Descendant

and Ruth, with no further details.

"William and Anna had two daughters; Lillian (Hopp) and Ruth (Fitzgerald)."

William married again, this time to Mary Frances Strange.

I found their Ohio marriage record.

It is odd here that for the Spoouse's mother's name they have entered Mary
Francis. But this is the Spouse's name. Mary Frances' mother was Lula Swann.
Similarly on the Spouse's father's name, they have recorded William, when Mary
Frances' father wa Senter Lemuel Strange.

Some of these children are enumerated in the 1940 census.

It is not apparent why William listed his brother's wife in Florida as the
contact person. This may indicate both his parents had died by this time. At
the time of finding William's WWI draft information, I had not found death
information for his parents. His brother was alive at the time, so why not
just list his brother, instead of his brother's wife? And why did William not
list his wife Mary as the contact person, or as the card says, "Person who
will always know your address?"

If William was 11 months old in April, 1910, he would have been born between
15 April and 15 May 1909.

On the back of a picture postcard, Andrew 24 April 1923, William Andrew signs
himself as Andrew Jackson. He states there that he had had his 14th birthday
on 24 April 1923. This would mean he was born on 24 April 1909:
"I will send you this card we had taken of us at Whits Park (California).
Andrew Jackson. I was 12 years old. I am now 14. Will send better picture
later. Birthday 24 April 1923."

This matches his age of 11 months in 1910, since the census date was in April
1910.

When I explored further, I discovered that William and Lillian had previously
been married, to each other. They divorced then remarried in 1945. In the
meantime, Lillian also remarried and divorced. In the 1930 census she is
reported as a head of household with the two Jackson children in the home.
Her last name is now Hoskin (not Hoskins), and she is reported as Divorced.
The youngest child, William A Jr, is 5.

William A Jackson Jr was born on 15 February 1935. This means they divorced
about 1935 or 1936, she married a Hoskins and then divorced him too before the
1940 census. They remarried in 1945, as reported in the above marriage
license. They also later divorced, and Lillian's final surname was Owen. We
have not found the first marriage record or either of the divorce records.
William married Thelma Leona Barclay, and was married to her at the time of
his death in 1969. We have not found this marriage record.

William and his next wife Mabel were married in January 1945, as indicated in
their marriage record above. They were reported in the Riverside City
Directory for 1945. Andrew is reported in the UN Navy. It appears to be his
father Samuel who is also listed as living in a local hotel, and working as a
machine operator, not further defined.

After his birth, the next record in which I have found William A Jackson Jr is
the 1940 census, which reported him as 5 years old. He is in the household of
his divorced mother named Mabel Hoskin. Going by William Jr's age here, his

married a Hoskin then also divorced him before this 1930 census.

mention a story her father (William F. Jackson, Ean's oldest son) told her.
She said they buried a family member in Greenville Cemetery, north of Marietta
off of the old highway. They had to push the wagon with the coffin in it
through the mud and it was awful he had said. I wasn't able to ask her any
more questions, like if he mentioned who all helped or his age. Who could this
family member have been?

William F. Jackson was born in 1902 so we can assume he wouldn't have been
helping with something like that until he was 6 or 7, I would think, so about
1908 to 1910. I don't know of any family members buried in this cemetery. I
have personally walked this cemetery and found nothing, but there are many
stones without writing and many unmarked graves.

Chokma'shki/Thank You,

uncertain. They both served in the Texas State Troops, which cooperated with
the Confederate Army to protect Chickasaw Nation and the Texas frontier during
the Civil War.

IN an ald undocumented genealogy, this perosn is named Willis H Jackson. In

Notes for Winnie Alice JACKSON

Alice's place of birth was uncertain, and she is reported born in Indian
Territory in the census. But her daughter's death certificate reports that
Alice was born in Wise County, Texas.

Her daughter Gertie's death certificate reprots that Winnie was born in Wise
County, Texas.

Texas Death Certificate
Gertie T Handy
Residence 305 Nelson St, Quanah, Hardeman, Texas
Death 27 Dec 1956 Memorial Hospital, Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas
Birth 16 Jan 1893 Oklahoma
Occupation Housewife, Widowed
Father Newton Philpot, born Mississippi
** Mother Alice Jackson, born Wise County, Texas **
Cause of Death, Coronary Occlusion
SS# 458-03-1820
Informant Newt Handy (son)
Burial 29 December 1956 in Quanah Cemetery
By Knowles Funeral Home
Certificate Registered 29 December 1956

So this means that Alice's parents Talitha and Abe Jackson moved to Indian
Territory after 1870 when Alice was born. This matches records later found
for her father Abraham in military activity in Indian Territory during the
Civil War, and court records for indian Territory in the Federal court in Ft
Smith/ Van Buren, Arkansas before the establishment of the state of Oklahoma.
(See profile and Notes for Abraham Jackson and Daniel David Green.

It is thought that Winnie and Newton married in Texas about 1888 or 1889..
Their first child Lou Ellen is reported by all her censuses to have been born
in Texas, in 1890. Winnie and Alice appear in the 1900 census in Chickasaw
Nation, in what became Love County. Oklahoma.

1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 8 June, Township 8S,
Range 2E, District 151. page 4B-5A, Hse #60, Fam #65
Philpot, Newton Head W M Jan 1868 32 Married 10 yrs MS TN MS Farm Laborer
** Philpot, Alice Wife W F Feb 1870 30 Married 10 yrs Ind Terr MS GA **
Jackson, Talitha Mother-in-law W F Dec 1842 57 Widow 9 children, 6 living
GA NC NC

Note that the 1900 census reports they living in Chickasaw Nation. That area
became Love County, Oklahoma in 1907, where they are reproted in the 1910
census.

1910 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 2 May, Washington Township,
District 173. page 7B-8A, Hse #139, Fam #140
Filpot, N Head M W 42 Married 20 yrs MS IL US Farmer, Rents
** Filpot, W A Wife F W 40 Married 20 yrs 8 children/5 living OK MS GA **

Because of the censuses, it appears they moved to Chickasaw Nation sometime in
the 1890s. Other members of both their families lived in Chickaaw Natoin.
All the children after Lou Ellen were born in Chickasaw Nation/Oklahoma.

It is thought that Winnie died in Love County in 1917. That is the same year
Newton's obituary reports he mvoed to Ada, Oklahoma. Howeever, it also
reports he moved there from Sulphur Springs, Texas, when the census indicates
he was living in Indian Territory/Oklahoma. But they havd lived in Love
County since their marriage or soon after

But it is interesting that Winnie was buried in Ada, and not Love County,
where many of her family were. There are many Philpots buried in the Rosedale
Cemetery in Ada.
