Ohio Soldiers in WWI, 1917-1918 William Jackson Age: 21 5/12 Years Birth abt 1896 Montgomery, Alabama, USA Enlistment 2 Jun 1917 Cleveland, Ohio National Guard Co G 5 Infantry ONG (Co G 145 Infantry) to 11 May 1918 Headquarters Company 145 Infantry to 7 June 1918 155 Depot Brigade to Discharge Sergeant 24 Aug 1918 Honorable discharge 7 Feb 1919. His age given in the enlistment record working back from his date of enlistment would place his birth date in about January 1896. This matches his age in the 1920 census, at age 24, or born about 1896. In 1940 William is reported as 42, which would place birth in about 1888. The latter must be in error, in light of the two earlier reports. But the WWII enlistment reports his birth date almost two years later, at 27 Dec 1897 (see below), which would match in rounded years with the 1940 census just two year before. Paul McDaniel reports a family tradition that William ran away at age 16 to join the army. "William ran away from home at 16 and lied about his age to get into the Army. That kind of explains the difference in age with the census. In this case, it seems the census has the correct age as opposed to military records." -- Paul McDaniel, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 March 2013 If the WWII record really reports his correct birth date, then from his real birth date, he would have been 19 years and 5 months old when he enlisted for WWII, not 16 as the family tradition remembers. I am not sure why he would have needed to report himself older. Wasn't 18 the enlistment age for WWI? In July 1919, William married for the first time, to Anna McQuaid. This may indicate both his parents had died by this time. At the time of finding William's WWI draft information, I had not found death information for his parents. His brother was alive at the time, so why not just list his brother, instead of his brother's wife? And why did William not list his wife Mary as the contact person, or as the card says, "Person who will always know your address?" Alice's place of birth was uncertain, and she is reported born in Indian Territory in the census. But her daughter's death certificate reports that Alice was born in Wise County, Texas. Her daughter Gertie's death certificate reprots that Winnie was born in Wise County, Texas. Texas Death Certificate Gertie T Handy Residence 305 Nelson St, Quanah, Hardeman, Texas Death 27 Dec 1956 Memorial Hospital, Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas Birth 16 Jan 1893 Oklahoma Occupation Housewife, Widowed Father Newton Philpot, born Mississippi ** Mother Alice Jackson, born Wise County, Texas ** Cause of Death, Coronary Occlusion SS# 458-03-1820 Informant Newt Handy (son) Burial 29 December 1956 in Quanah Cemetery By Knowles Funeral Home Certificate Registered 29 December 1956 So this means that Alice's parents Talitha and Abe Jackson moved to Indian Territory after 1870 when Alice was born. This matches records later found for her father Abraham in military activity in Indian Territory during the Civil War, and court records for indian Territory in the Federal court in Ft Smith/ Van Buren, Arkansas before the establishment of the state of Oklahoma. (See profile and Notes for Abraham Jackson and Daniel David Green. It is thought that Winnie and Newton married in Texas about 1888 or 1889.. Their first child Lou Ellen is reported by all her censuses to have been born in Texas, in 1890. Winnie and Alice appear in the 1900 census in Chickasaw Nation, in what became Love County. Other members of both their families lived in Chickaaw Natoin. All the children after Lou Ellen were born in Chickasaw Nation/Oklahoma. It is thought that Winnie died in Love County in 1917. That is the same year Newton's obituary reports he mvoed to Ada, Oklahoma. Howeever, it also reports he moved there from Sulphur Springs, Texas, when the census indicates he was living in Indian Territory/Oklahoma. But they havd lived in Love County since their marriage or soon after But it is interesting that Winnie was buried in Ada, and not Love County, where many of her family were. There are many Philpots buried in the Rosedale Cemetery in Ada. Winnie A. Philpot Birth Feb 21, 1870 Death Oct 29, 1917 Daughter of A. Jackson (b. Ga.) & Tilitha Green (b. Ga.)
