Vernice and Roy broke up some time before 1935. The 1940 census reports them
in different locations for 1935, and Vernice was married again in October
1935, to Glen E Bishop, in El Reno, Canadian County, Oklahoma.

Vernice and Glen also divorced, before 1940. In the 1940 census, Verneice is
reported as Divorced and living with her divorced father. A record for what
appears to be this Roy Long is found in the 1940 census in Harford, Maryland,
where he is reported as Single (not Divorced), and working in a horse
facility. His residence in 1935 is reported as rural Osage County, Oklahoma.
Osage County is on the Kansas border. Roy and Verneice must have divorced
about 1934 or so.

A record seems to represent Verniece (Vernice) in Orange County and Kern
County, California. But this may be a different Vernice. No marriage record
has been found for this Vernice Haskell. Vernice Haskell died in Santa Ana,
Orange County, California. So this could be Vernice Jenkins Long, especially
in light of her great grandson Michael Tidwell's report that Verniece was
married eight times..

These public records, as well as Verniece's Social Security records, have her
name as Verniece A. Her great nephew says the A was for Agnes, but it was her
first name, not her middle name.

"My name is Michael Tidwell, I am the great grandson of J Everett Jenkins, my
grandmother was Beatrix V Jenkins Ester and I found a couple of errors
regarding his children. First thing is Vernice O. Jenkins' name is actually
Agnes Vernice Jenkins I know this because she told me she always hated the
name Agnes, her first name, so she went by Vernice. Secondly, she was married
eight times, sometimes to the same man twice and her son was not Michael Keck
Long, it was Michael Keck Caballero 9/30/49-9/19/86 (suicide) for whom I was
named. He was born in Fullerton, CA and interred At Melrose Cemetery in
Orange, CA. His father's name was Herman Caballero whose parents moved to the

Notes for Amanda Lucinda JENKINS

The name varied in different sections of Harold K Christian's Jenkins Family
History as Amanda Lucinda or Lucinda Amanda. In the 1910 census she is listed
as Amanda L, which seems to indicate that Amanda was the first name. In 1930
she is listed as Mandy M, which I cannot account for. Her marriage license
gives her name simply as Mandy Jenkins.

Nieces and nephews called her Aunt Mandy. A comment by her daughter Annie
Christian Tabor refers to her as Amanda Lucinda.
-- R Christian GED Notes, Cited in J Epperson Genealogy, miscellaneous
comments by Annie Christian Tabor.

In the 1860 census all children were listed by initials only; she was listed
as L. In the 1880 census she was listed simply as Lucinda. Her nickname was
"Mandy" which might indicate the primary (first?) name was Amanda. I have
noticed, however, that there is a common pattern in this Jenkins line to call
children by their SECOND name, rather than the first. Epperson Family
Genealogy records her name as Lucinda Amanda. One or two other genealogists
report this name sequence.

"It is just possible that Joseph's family lived in the Atlanta, Georgia, area
when William, Lide and Amanda were born. Or perhaps they had relatives living
in that area during the period they were receiving the paper. Later known as
'Bud,' William accompanied the family from Georgia to Cass County, Texas, ca
1860 [they were in the 1860 census in Cass County]"

I have not found her and father Joseph Sanford Jenkins' family in the 1870
census. They were apparently out of the state after the death of Joseph's
wife Lucinda Amanda in about 1868-69. Perhaps they were traveling and were
not recorded in the census of any state. It appears that the family were away
from Cass County for a period of about 2-3 years. Joseph Sanford married
Louisa Taylor Christian in February 1872.

In the 1880 census, with her father and step mother, she was reported under
the name Lucinda.

Amanda's marriage license for marriage to William James Christian was issued
on 1 November 1882, according to a transcription of the Cass County Marriage
books by James Jackson (in spreadsheet format from James).

I later found the Cass County records in Ancestry.com online, reporting the
issuance of the license:

Texas Marriage Index, 1847-2002
Cass County, Book 5, p 179
License issued 1 Nov 1882
"Cristians [sic], W. J." "Jenkins, Amanda"

Harold Christian reports this date and reports that the marriage took place in
Naples. (Naples is just a few meters west of the Cass-Morris County line.
Dalton, where the Jenkins and Christian families lived, is about 5 miles east
of Naples.)

Harold reports that on the same day in Naples, Amanda and married William
James Christian and her sister Mary Lydia (or Lydie) married Thomas Jefferson
Chapel. Jimmy Epperson reports the date of the marriage as 2 November 1882,
one day after the issuance of the license.

William and Mandy moved to Indian Territory about 1991, based on the birth
dates reported for their children. They are reported in Washita County of the
Territory in the 1900 census. But there are a lot of errors or discrepancies
in the census, compared with other age or birthday reports. Henry was the
first child born in Indian Territory, reported here as born in May 1892. I
find it interesting that this census reports that all the children were born
in Chickasaw Nation, the last in May 1898 or 1899.

But by 1900 they are west of there in neighboring Oklahoma Territory for the
census. Here she is enumerated under the name of Mandy. Here Mandy's birth
place is reproted as Mississippi, rather than Georgia in the first two
censuses. From here every census reports her birth place as Mississippi, with
various birth places for her parents.

If the last child is Susan Anne (Annie), the birth date reported here is odd.
It is messy and hard to decipher. But it could not be May 1898, which is what
it initially looks like, if Robert's birthday was only 7 months before in
March 1898. Humorously, all the children are listed as farmers, also; even
Susa, the baby. In 1910 they are still in Washita County. Both she parents
are reported as born in Georgia this time and in 1920.

This census reports again that Amanda was born in Mississippi, rather than
Georgia as the earlier censuses. It also reports Mississippi as the birth
state not only for her mother, but also her father, who was born in South
Carolina.

Her memorial on Find a Grave reports the birth and death dates from her
gravestone as only a year. But the year of death is 1858, while other records
and family information has her death date as 31 May 1859.

Amanda Lucinda "Mandy" Jenkins Christian

Death Jul 1, 1948 Washita County, Oklahoma

Amanda died in Oakdale, now a ghost town near Cowden and only 2 miles north of
Mountain View, Oklahoma. Her grave has only the year of birth and death; the
year of birth is 1858, while family records report her birth date as 31 May
1859.

She was born in Georgia, probably in the Atlanta area, but about a year later
her family was enumerated in the 1860 census in Cass County, Texas, where she
grew up.

She married William James Christian 2 November 1882 at age 23 in Naples,
Morris, Texas, a few miles from the family farm. Several members of the
Jenkins and Christian families moved to Indian Territory and lived in various
areas of what became Washita and Stephens County.

She died on 01 Jul 1948, at home in Oakdale.

Notes for Arthur Carthal JENKINS

All his siblings called him Bud. His nieces and nephews called him Uncle Bud.

The name is spelled as Carthal in the Family Group Sheet from Harold K
Christian. Two childhood censuses list him as Carthel. The cemetery listing
gives the spelling as Carthal. This is one indication that this was the
spelling used by the family. In May 2009, Bud's son Carthal Trent contacted
me and his spelling of his name confirmed the correct spelling of Carthal.

Bud's gravestone has only the initial C. In May 2007, Lou Ila Jenkins found
some old family notes she wrote down, probably in the 1950s, but they contain
no date or source info. This has the name of Bud and his son Trent spelled as
Carthal. I found the Bud's death information from Bell County, Texas, also
spells his name Carthal.

Bud's son Trent, in giving me birth places of some members of his family, told
me his father was born in Ft Cobb. But I see that three months after his
birth, Joe and Jennie Jenkins were reported in the 1910 census in Marlow, in
Stephens County, where his father was the City Marshall. They later lived in
Mt View, Kiowa County, Oklahoma, and then were in Ft Cobb, Caddo County,
following that, where they were reported in the 1930 census.

In 1910, Bud was just a few months old. The enumerator reports his age as 3
months. But it appears they had not yet named the child at that point. He is
just Baby Jenkins.

His age is given as 10 in the January census. This would seem to indicate he
was born in 1909, and the date of birth from family sources is 28 December
1909.

In the 1930 census, Bud was reported in his parents' household in Ft Cobb,
Caddo County, Oklahoma.

In the 1940 census, Eyline is listed as Dorothy I, which seems to indicate
that Dorothy was her first name, rather than the middle name, as might be
indicated by other listings as Eyline D. She always went by Eyline. In the
1910 and 1920 censuses she is listed as Eyline (or Ilene).

Bud's son Trent tells me that Bud worked for his older brother Asa in Asa's
appliance business before WWII. This is consistent with the report in this
1940 census that Bud and Eyline lived in Anadarko in 1935. There is no
indication just when they moved, but it would have been after the birth of
Carthal Trent in October 1937.

They were also reported in the 1940 city directory for Oklahoma City. The
name of the dairy Bud worked for is reported in this directory listing.

Both Bud and his younger brother Orville worked at Tinker field Air Force Base

living in the Oklahoma City area and Orville lived with them a while during
that wartime work in the City. Bud's son Michael Thomas was born in Oklahoma
City in 1943. In 1941 Bud is listed under his middle name Carthal.

In 1944, during World War II, Bud and Eyline were still living in Oklahoma

he remembered my father, Orville Lee Jenkins, living with them during the war
when Orville was also working at Tinker Field as a Radio Repair technician.

After the war, Bud moved back to Chickasha, Oklahoma, where his daughter
LaRhonda Eyline was born. Bud's son (my first cousin) Trent gave me the
birthplaces for himself and his siblings and their mother Eyline Lynch. In
Chickasha Bud had a Maytag dealership in next door to the City Hall and Police
Department. Bud shared the building with his brother, Orville Lee Jenkins,
who ran a radio sales and repair business, until about 1953.

I found listings for them in the 1947 Chickasha City Directory.

Arthur Carthal (Bud) was ill for some time before he died. He was still
living in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma, at the time of his death. Other
family sources, including my cousin and Bud's nephew Harold K Christian, have
no place of death, but report the date.

However, I found out in May 2007, from his nephew Asa Lee, that he died in
Temple, Texas, while in the Scott White Hospital. I later found the record in
the Texas Death Index. His heart was weak from the effects of rheumatic fever
he suffered as a child. He decided not to go through the operation to repair
or replace one of the valves in his heart. He died on 24 January 1955.

Bud was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha. Though Bud is buried in a
plot for two, the second place is unused. His wife Eyline married a second
time to Wayne Wornom. They moved to Oklahoma City some years later, and
Eyline apparently passed away and was buried there in another family plot. As
of July 2014 I have not found the burial information for Eyline Lynch Wornom.

Fairlawn Cemetery records report the date of burial as 19 October 1955. But
we see from the death certificate, that was the date of death. The body was
not removed from the hospital by the funeral home until 20 October. His
obituary reports the burial was on 20 October.

Her grave has her name as Beatrix. Other sources report it as Beatrice.
Notice that Beatrice's middle initial in the 1930 census is V. Her name on
her grave marker is Beatrix V Jenkins. I cannot account for the V. But her
name in the 1940 census is given with a clearly different middle initial:
Beatrice U. But no source has been found for the name Annie reported in the

In 1940 only two children remain in Everett's household. He has divorced his
second wife Beulah. But the child matching Annie V in age is reported as

Betty Lou Mrs Strickland, Democrat
William H Strickland, Republican
Residence 10441 Perdido Anaheim, Orange County, California, USA
General Election 4 November 1958

No further record is found for WIlliam Strickland. His wife continued in
busienss under her maiden name till she died and was buried under that name in
1988.

--------------------
My great Aunt Betty-Lou was a member of AA and would time and time again go
find him on "the nickle" (skid row) in LA as they lived in Bellflower, CA.
When Ben would leave on a drinking binge she had to find a way to make ends
meet so she ran a boarding house on the property which is now Bellflower
Chevrolet whom she sold it to. Then she moved on some property which the
house she lived in was on and also three rentals.

When I was in fourth grade, we lived in one [of the rental houses] as our
house went through escrow. This information is relevent because it describes
how she made a living, as a real estate agent.

Grandpa Ben eventually was found for the last time on skid row in September of
1964, the reason I'm aware of this date is because he was at my first birthday
party. They (I've been told) put me on his lap and as he was smiling
proceeded to feed me his porterhouse steak. There was a picture taken of this
but I'm not sure who has it at this point. After that he lived with Aunt
Betty-Lou until he was put in a rest home on Ball Road in Anaheim, CA where he
stayed until, as far as i know, he died.

-------------------------------
One genealogy has reported her death as occurring in Camas, Washington, with
the name Betty Lou Horn, wife of Jerrold Horn. But their marriage is reported
as occurring in 1976, while we note that public records cited above indicate
that in 1986, Betty Lou Jenkins Strickland was still living in Anaheim,
California, and in 1993 she was living in Prescott Valley, Arizona, still
under her first married name of Betty Lou Strickland. Additionally, we know
from family sources that Mary Lou's father Ben lived with her for the last
years of his life, and died in Anaheim in 1978.

Betty Lou Horn's surviving brother was named in her obituary as James Jenkins.
Ben and Lena had no son named James. Betty Lou Jenkins Horn in Washington is
not our Betty Lou Jenkins Strickland.

In addition, the birth dates of these two women differ. On Betty Lou Jenkins
Horn's grave her birth date, as reported on her memorial on Find a Grave, is 6
Oct 1926. Betty Lou Jenkins Strickland was born on 13 February 1926.

Notes for Brian Jay JENKINS

Joseph Benjamin Jenkins, Jr, changed his name to Brian Jay. Reported to me by
descendant Richard Kevin Jenkins. Also name is recorded as Brian Jay in the
Epperson Genealogy.
-- http://epperson.eppygen.org/FamilyTree/F684.htm

I also received communication from Brian's son Bruce about family members.
Bruce says Brian Jay is also known as Benjamin Jenkins. Brian Jay is reported
in the 1920 census as Benjamin J. I was later in touch with Brian directly.

Note that Ben Jr (later changed his name to Brian Jay) is reported as Single.
There is a conflict here with other family information. His son Bruce reports
that his half-sister Sherry Dale is the daughter of Laverna Riddle. The
conflict is that Sherry Dale was born in 1936, and is enumerated with her
grandparents in Whittier, California, in the 1940 census. This is consistent
with the 1940 report of Ben Jr's residence in 1935 in Whittier. In the 1940
census, 3-year-old Sherry was enumerated in the household of her mother's
parents.

1940 Federal Census, Los Angeles County, California, 9 April, Whittier,

Laverna must have died before the 1940 census, though it has been suggested
that they were divorced. in 1940 Brian (Ben) was reported as Single rather
than Widowed or Divorced. I have not found either a marriage or a divorce
record for Brian and Laverna. I have not found a 1940 census record for
Laverna Riddle Jenkins. Their marriage would have been about 1935 or very
early 1936, based on Sherry's birth date in December 1936.
