Notes for Charles Dempsey JENKINS

"Ephraim met Nancy, they had an affair and Charles was the result; I heard that
he was run out of Ms. along with Nancy and baby Charles. They made a stop in
Tx had another baby before eventually ending up in Arkansas. My aunt told me
that Ephraim used to go back and fourth from Arkansas to Mississippi to visit
his Ms. family, the last time he went back he told them he was not coming back
to Ms again, not sure what year that was."

"My great grandfather was Ephraim J Jenkins. My grandfather was Charles
Dempsey Jenkins. My father's name was John Jenkins. I found a James Jenkins
listed in the 1835 federal pension list. It stated he was 69 years old and
lived in the Sumpter district."

Charlie married first abt 1902 and had one child with his first wife, whose
name I have not found, and I have found no marriage record. They had one
child, a daughter named Goldine, who is reported in the 1910 census. There is
also a memorial for Goldean on Find a Grave, reporting her birth date as 11
July 1902. There is no photo of the gravestone. Charlie remarried widow
Rosella Belle (or Emma) Scruggs Benson in December 1905. She is variously
referred to as Belle or Ella.

Belle was born about 1879 or 1880, according to ages in censuses. But in the
1930 census, Belle reports that she was first married at age 14, which would
be about 1893. Her record of marriage to Charley Jenkins reports her last
name as Benson.

The 1910 census reports that this is the second marriage for both. Besides
Goldine, born in Charley's first marriage, there were three children born
before the marriage date in 1905. These are Belle's children from her first
marriage to Martin Benson who died before the 1900 census. Al lthe children
are listed here with Charley's last name.

The last child had the name Miller in the line, then that was crossed out, and
no other name put in. The next family is named Miler, so it appears the line
was left blank, (maybe the enumerator forgot to enter the last child's name),
then wrote the next family name in the next blank line, then marked it out
when he realized it was the wrong line. The last child here matches the child
in the 1920 census named Oregon, age 10 in 1920.

I found a set of memorials on Find a Grave for a Clarence and Lovellia Jenkins

details on birth places or parents to confirm definitely. Clarence's middle
name here is Burl. the only other indication of his name is the initial E,

Clarence's middlle name. The details here led to the discovery of Clarence's
death certificate which confirmed that Clarence Burl is the son of Cullen and

E.J. Jenkins W M 55 Farmer SC SC SC
Nancy Jenkins W F 36 Wife Housekeeping Ala Va SC
Dan Jenkins W M 5 Son Ark SC Ala

A marriage record is found apparently reporting on this Daniel P Jenkins and
his wife Stella Hannon. Married in 1896, this matches the report of marriage
in the 1900 census. But the name of the wife in the 1900 census is not Stella
but Susie. Perhaps her name was Stella Susie? We find some comfort in the
listings of the 1930 census, where Dan's wife is reported as Estella. The
birth state and age match. It is interesting further, because Dan's brother
Jacob married a woman named Stella in 1891.

In 1900, Daniel and his wife Susie are living next door to Dan's brother
Charles, head of the family for all the younger brothers and sisters, after
the death of both their parents about 1899. On the other side of Charles is
their brother Jacob and his wife Stella with their children.

There is apparently an error in Emma's birth date. Originally the enumerator
had born Feb 1898 and age 1. Another hand has marked out the 1 and written 2.
The original birth date written here could not be right if Roy's birth date is
correct. It is only 6 months between the birth dates for the two. I think
the correct birth date for Emma should be Feb 1899, which would make her 1
year old at the June census time, as the enumerator originally had.

Note that the number of children reported is 5 children born, 5 living. Five
children are listed here. But what about Roy, the firstborn in the 1900
census? We would expect Roy to be about 12 years old in 1910. This must mean
he died. In 1900 Susie has had two children, Roy and Emma. I would have
expected the 1910 census to report 6 children, and 5 living.

Jana has some exact dates, such as Dan's day of birth 12 February 1875. We
would think her dates come from family sources, but some of these differ from
records or other genealogy reports. That date of 12 February is confirmed in
his WWI draft registration, but that document reports that the year of birth
was 1874, not 1875. The date of February 1875 comes from the 1900 census,
which is notorious for wrong birth years. Since Dan himself was reporting the
information on the draft card, I will take that as the correct date.

Jana's genealogy is the only one reporting a date of death for him. I can
find no death record for Daniel. Jana provides no comment or documentation,
making her data questionable. So her information may help fill lin some gaps,
but where other information is available, we must give priority to the other
source.

In 1850 Debby and her husband William Burden are living in a cluster of
related families in the Jenkins extended family. This census record tells us
they moved to Mississippi only shortly before the 1850 census. Their last
child is reported as 1 year old and born in South Caorlina.

Drusilla and the next child, Elizabeth, are reported as born in Arkansas, but
then the next two are reported as born in South Carolina. This does not seem
likley. I note that all were born in a county named Union County. This seems
likely the result of sloppy work in the genealogy. The censuses report
Elizabeth born in South Carolina, which makes sense. Other genealogies report
Union County, South Carolina.

Notes for Ebby Elijah JENKINS

I first found information on Ebby Jenkins in July 2008. The first public
record I find of him is the 1900 census for Cass County, Texas. He is living
with his widowed mother and siblings.

1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 20 June, Justice Precinct 3, District
22, page 17A, Hse/Fam #285
Jenkins, Julia Head W F Sept 1856 43 Widow 7 children/6 living GA GA SC
Farmer Owns Farm
Jenkins, Elby Son W M Oct 1886 13 TX GA TX

Ebby's name here is spelled Elby, but a family genealogy I found in August
2008 gives his name as the more common Ebby. However, the genealogy records
that one of his sons is called Elba.

Ebby's date of birth is reported in the 1900 census as October 1886. But a
family genealogy, compiled by my cousin Dorothy Wommack Neely, reports an
exact birth date of 13 October 1885. This genealogy gives information about
Ebby and his family. No documentation or explanation is given for the dates.

-----------
Ebby Elijah Jenkins, Born 13 OCT 1885. Died 27 MAY 1955

Wife 1 Lula Ewildi Harraman 1886-1918
Children
Lucille Jenkins 1905-

younger]
-- Cass County Texas -- America's Melting Pot,
/pt/family.aspx?tid=5720081&pid=-1408889298&pg=0
------------

This source was the first to give me the names of the children, but this
genealogy has an error in the children Elba Bryson and Ira Curtis. In the
1920 census, Harriet has Tefteller children of the same ages of Ira and Bryson
as Jenkins children, and younger. Further, that genealogy itself gives the
date of death for Lula as 27 January 1918. Bryson was about 4 years old at
that time.

1910 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 28 April, Justice Precinct 2,
Enumeration District 31, page 7B, Hse/Fam #127

Jenkins, Emmer Dau F W 3 TX TX IL [b abt 1907]
Jenkins, Ethel Dau F W 1 TX TX IL [b abt 1909]

Note that the genealogy reports another child, named Lucille, born in 1905.
This child is not in the 1910 census. So we can say she died before the 1910
census, even though the genealogy reports no death date.

By 1920, Ebb's wife has died, and he has remarried. We find him and his new
wife Harriet Charlton Tefteller, in a blended home with her children from her
first marriage. I have not discovered Harriet's maiden name. In 1920, Ebb
and Harriet are living next door to Ebb's brother Cullen, reported as Curley
in the 1900 census.

1920 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 20 January, Justice Precinct 3,
Enumeration District 3, page 7B, Naples and Dalton Rd, Hse/Fam #124

Tefteller, Charlie StepSon M W 2yrs 1mo TX US TX [b abt Mar 1918]
Jenkins, Louella Dau F W 2 months TX TX TX [b Mar 1920]

Note that now Ebb's father is reported as born in Tennessee. Note that in
1910, it was Alabama. His brother Ira also reported Alabama in 1910, but
Tennessee in 1930. But in 1930, Ebb reports his father born in Georgia!

All the previous information we have had on his father, John C Jenkins, is
that he was born in Mississippi. This is likely the correct location for
John's birth. We have no information in the admittedly minimal family
tradition or censuses about his grandparents every living in Tennessee.
Joseph Sanford Jenkins and Lucinda Amanda Taylor apparently married in
Mississippi, where Lucinda was born. We find other Jenkins and Taylor
families there in the 1800s, although we have been unable to determine any
connection yet. Lucinda was born in Mississippi and J S was born in South
Carolina.

Another problem here indicates that the information the enumerator entered may
not be too reliable is that he has reported the mother of the girls as born in
Texas. But their mother, Lula Harraman was born in Illinois, according to the
1910 census. Her 1900 census record when she was still living at home with
her parents also reports her born in Illinois.

In the 1930 census, all the children are reported with the last name of
Jenkins. I assume this means that Ebby has legally adopted the Tefteller
children. This is also supported by their now being reported as sons and
daughter of Ebb.

Jenkins, Lucile Dau F W 12 TX TX TX [b abt 1918]
Jenkins, Julia Mother F W 58 Widow GA GA GA [b abt 1872]

Note that now Ebb's father is reported born in Georgia, as well as his mother.
Harriet's parents are also now reported as Texas and Alabama instead of US and
Texas. All the children of both fathers are now reported with the same birth
information for self and parents: Texas Texas Texas.

And we now find Ebb's mother living with them. She is reported as only 58
years old, which would mean she was born in 1872. But in the 1900 census her
birth date was reported as Sept 1856, when she was 43. So in 1930 she is
reported as only 15 years older than in 1900! Lucile (matching Louella in the
previous census) has gained 12 years in the last 10.

Notes for Elizabeth Jane JENKINS

1860 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 18 September, PO Attalaville,

From the age of Nancy and Elizabeth, it appears that Nancy is the second wife
and Elizabeth is a daughter of the first wife. If Bettie in 1870 is the
Elizabeth of 1860, however, she has gained 13 years instead of ten since the
last census. All the boys named in the 1860 census appeared in the 1850
census with their widowed father.

It appears that the first wife Sara Catherine (no maiden name) died at
childbirth with Richard (Dick) in 1849. She would have been 59 years old. It
is remarkable that she was still bearing children, with Joseph born about 1956
when she was about 56 years old.

Several family genealogies report that Eliza married Caleb Paseur (name also
spelled other ways). There is a marriage record of one Eliza Jane Jenkins
marrying a Caleb Paysour in Lincoln County, North Carolina, about three
counties north of Union County, South Carolina, where the Jenkins family
lived. This could be the correct person. No image was available of the
record, only the Ancestry transcription. Note that the date we have here is
the bond date, not the marriage date, though it might have been the same day.

North Carolina, Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868

Spouse Caleb Paysour
Bond Date 14 Apr 1845
Bond #000074887

Record #01 097
Bondsman David Hoffman
Witness [no first name] Hoyl

If the wife of Caleb Pasuer is the daughter of Samuel Jenkins, the date of
death for Eliza Jane would be 1923, and not the date of 1931 claimed by some,
despite the fact that one genealogy cites family claims that Eliza lived to be
105 years old. The wife of Caleb Paseur died in Marshall County, Alabama. He
grave (see below) says she died on 12 April 1923. Her death record has her
name as Lizzie Jane Paseur. Lizzie is, of course, another nickname for
Elizabeth, like Eliza.

Alabama, Deaths and Burials Index, 1881-1974
Lizzie Jane Paseur [Eliza Jane Paseur]
Birth abt 1826
Death 12 Apr 1923 Paint Rock, Jackson, Alabama
Death Age 97

The 1931 Alabama death record is in the name of Eliza Jenkins, who in died
Calhoun County, Mississippi in 1931. But with the last name as Jenkins, this
seems to be her married name No details are posted on any genealogy I have
found, nor could I find any further details of the Eliza Jenkins in Calhoun
County. Only the following transcription has been found.

Alabama Deaths, 1908-59
Eliza Jenkins
Death Apr 1931 Calhoun County
Volume 21, Page 10359

To me, a question still remains as to whether the wife of Caleb Paseur is the
daughter of Samuel Jenkins. I have not seen anything definitive in any of the
genealogies. They consistently attach censuses for Caleb and his wife Eliza
or Elizabeth to Eliza Jane, the daughter of Samuel Jenkins. But I have seen
no further documentation to confirm that. In the 1850 and 1860 censuses there
is a Jenins household headed by men who could be Eliza's brothers, Benjamin in
1850 and Jackson in 1860. Neither of these names matches a son of Samuel
Jenkins.

Emily does not appear in the 1860 census for this family, after they ahve
moved to Lafayette County, Missouri. It is likely she died before they moved.
The last child Goerge Ann and Annie's mother Isabella Scroggin are also
missing in the household enumeration in the 1860 census, and we thnk they both
died in Kentucky also.

The birth date given here cannot be correct. Originally the enumerator had
born Feb 1898 and age 1. Another hand has marked out the 1 and written 2.
The original birth date written here could not be right if her brother Roywas
born in Aug 1897 as reproted. That seems correct. That is only 6 months
between the birth dates for the two. I think the correct birth date for Emma
should be Feb 1899, which would make her 1 year old at the June census time,
as the enumerator originally had.

Several family genealogies report Emma Faye Jenkins Martin. Those with more
complete details report she was born and died in Titus County, Texas. Emma's

The Texas Death Index, however, reports her place the county of death was
Titus.

Some family genealogies reports Emma born in Titus County, but most say Cass
County. Some report some as born in Cass County but Emma alone born in Titus.
I find the family in Cass County in every census from 1900 to 1930, so it
would seem reasonable that all the children were born in Cass County. I think
some sources may have been misled by the report of her death in Titus County,
to think that this was her home county.
