Notes for Gladys Lahoma JENKINS

She went by Lahoma. Calling children by their middle name is a common practice
in the Jenkins line in previous generations.

On a list of births from her mother, Lahoma's birth date is listed as 25 Nov
1914, and her death record says the same; but her grave says 14 Nov 1914.
Social security and the California Death Index also have the birth date as 25
Nov 1914.

Lahoma graduated from Fort Cobb High School, Fort Cobb, Caddo County,
Oklahoma, in 1932. Her Graduation Program is dated 24 April 1932.

An Oklahoma marriage record may be for our Gladys Lahoma, since this is such
an unusual combination of names. This is an earlier marriage not known in any
family information I have seen.

No further records are found for Lahoma until 1991. That is the year she
died. Interestingly, a compilation of general directory entries for 1991 that
indicates that she was in a Glide, Oregon, at the address of her son Russ.
Her death record, however, reports that she died in Santa Barbara, California.

For some reason Lahoma's grave has the wrong birth date. A list of children's
births from Lahoma's mother (given to my mother, Lou Jenkins) has her birth
date as Nov 25, 1914, while the grave has Nov 14, 1914. Her California Death
record and Social Security also have the correct date Nov 25, 1914. I
submitted a correction to the Find a Grave memorial for Lahoma, and the Death

Return to Gladys Lahoma JENKINS

Notes for Goldine JENKINS

In various records, Goldine's name is also spelled Goldeen and Goldean, as well
as some odd ways that don't seem to represent the pronunciation, like Goldeon
in her marriage record, which may be a mistranscription for Goldean.

I have been surprised to find that virtually all genealogies report her
parents to be Charley Jenkins and Belle Scruggs Benson. Some report Goldine's
name as Goldine Benson, the daughter of Charles Jenkins. If Belle Scruggs was
her mother, this means she was born out of wedlock and she went by her
mother's last name.

According to her memorial on Find a Grave, which has no photo of the
gravestone for verification, Goldine was born 11 June 1902. In the 1900
census, Belle Scruggs Benson is already a widow, living with her widowed
mother Martha J Scruggs, and has only three children. She did not marry
Charles Jenkins until 1905, when Goldine was already 3 years old. But the FAG
memorial reports Goldean's maiden name as Benson, and reports her mother as
Belle Rosella Scruggs and Charldes D Jenkins.

The 1910 census reports Goldean as 7 years old, matching her 1902 birth date.
It appears that Goldean's mother was a first wife of Charles Jenkins, whose
name we have not discovered. In the 1910 census both Charles and Belle are
reproted as in their 2nd marriage. That census reports that Charles and Belle
have been married 4 years, matching their marriage record in 1905.

The youngest of Belle's children reported in 1900 is Josie, 3 months old at
census time in 1900. It appears that Martin Benson died about 1899. Josie
was the last child of Martin Benson and Rosella Scruggs Benson.

In the 1910 census, even the Benson children of Belle are reported with the
surname of Jinkins.

children/6 living AR Unk Unk [b abt 1879]
Jinkins, Goldine Dau F W 7 Single AR AR AR [born 3 years before her father
married Belle]

It seems we must posit an earlier wife to account for this report of 2
marriages. If Goldean was born in 1902, then the first wife may have died in
childbirth or some time before the December 1905 marriage to Belle. Going by
the birth of Goldine (Goldean), Charley must have married her mother about
1901 or 1902. Charley was not married in 1900.

One kink in this theory that Goldine was a child of an earlier marriage of
Charley Jenkins is that her marriage record reports her last name as Benson.
I cannot account for this entry of her name as Goldeon [sic] Benson. Even If
she was born out of wedlock, and was going by her mother's name (Benson), you
would think she would start going by Jenkins after her parents married.that
might mean she went by her mother's name at the time of her birth.

I see that in 1930 the child in the list after Barney is reported as T L Jr.
His father's name is given in various sources as Thomas Lee. But in the 1940

not Thomas Lee Jr.

I found Goldine's death record in Arkansas. I have not found a burial record,
but there is a memorial on Find a Grave (no photo of the grave).

(confirmed by the location in the 1930 census above), and is confirmed in the
Find a Grave memorial I found later. There is a listing for this cemetery in
Arkansas Gravestones, which seems to be a complete listing for this cemetery.
But there is only one name of Patterson there, one apparently unrelated Walker
Albert Patterson, born in 1858 and died in 1932.

Return to Goldine JENKINS

Notes for Harriett A JENKINS

Sources report that Harriet Jenkins' father was William Mannon (or Manon)
Jenkins of Kentucky. One or more genealogies report her mother as Anna or
Anne/Annie O Scroggin. Other genealogies report the wife of William Mannon
Jenkins as Mary Cornet. Census records and genealogies alike show no child
named Harriet of William Mannon Jenkins and Mary Cornet. Harriet's father was
a different William Jenkins than the one who was the husband of Mary Cornet.

We find William and Anna in the 1850 census in Anderson County, Kentucky. Her
widowed mother is living in her and William's household.

Some time after the birth of their son William, Harriet's paretns moved to
Missouri. Note that in teh 1860 census below, Harriet's grandmother is no
longer in their household. She probably passed away before the move, which
left the family free to move. The last child repoerted in 1859, George Ann,
is also missing, The latter must have died, either before they moved or
after they got to Missouri.

Notes for Henry JENKINS

It is uncertain exactly how old the child Henry was when he died. He is known
by name from an entry in a family Bible, and his grave has been located in
what is now Mitchell farm, near Dalton, in Cass County, Texas, where the
Jenkins and Christian families lived.

The gravestone dates are not fully readable, due to damage to the headstone.
Family tradition suggests Henry was born in 1876, matching the readable year
of 1876 on the stone. The day of birth was the 4th, but the month is missing.
Henry he never appears in a census. Thus he would have been only about 4
years old at most when he died. He died some time before the June 1880
census.

"A small grave with an old handmade sandstone marker bearing the inscription
“(?). H. Jenkins / Born - 4, 1876 / Died --” is located in a small grove
of trees and crepe myrtle about 350 yards northwest of the farm home occupied
by Mrs. J. C. Mitchell (between Bryans Mill and Dalton). One of the Jenkins
families was reported to have lived on this farm in the late 1800s."

Died at about 3-4 years old. Not details are known about Henry otherwise.
Harold Christian, early Jenkins-Christian family researcher, visited sites
around Dalton and Bryan's Mill in Cass County, Texas, where the Jenkins family
lived. He found a burial plot on a former Jenkins residence farm, owned by J C
Mitchell at that time.

There is a second memorial on Find a Grave, which includes his full obituary,
but lacks his birth date. After I communicated with the manager of the
following memorial to give her the birth date and refer her to the other
memorial, I found her memorial had disappeared. But the obit had not appeared
on the above memorial. I am glad I captured it before it disappeared. In
November 2014 I submitted the obituary, with the erroneous burial information
removed, to the above remaining memorial and it was added by the manager HBC.

The mortuary marker for his grave is seen in a photo on the above memorial.

Howard Lewis Jenkins
Birth unknown
Death Feb. 13, 2008 Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina

BLACKSBURG - Howard Lewis Jenkins, 59, was called home to be with the Lord on
Feb. 13, 2008, after a two year battle with cancer.

A native of King's Creek, he was the son of Howard and Ada Lewis McSwain
Jenkins of Blacksburg.

He was first and foremost a wonderful, Godly husband and father, owner of H.
Lewis Construction Company and a member of Smyrna Baptist Church for over 30
years, where he held many offices. He was also an Army veteran of the Vietnam
Conflict, part time farmer and lover of the land.

Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife, Diane Doster Jenkins; a daughter and
son-in-law, Jennifer and Seth Dedmond of Clover; a son, Ashley Jenkins of
Blacksburg and his fiancée, Angel Brantley of York; a granddaughter, Olivia
Dedmond of Clover; a godson and godgranddaughter, John Glen Martin and
Elizabeth Martin of Hickory Grove whom he loved as his own; one brother, James
Jenkins of Blacksburg; two sisters, Shirley Short of Blacksburg and Lois King
of Clover.

The family will host a receiving of friends from 7 until 8:30 Friday evening
at Gordon Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at
Mountain View Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Smyrna Baptist Church Youth and Children, 1613 McGill
Highway, Smyrna, SC 29743 or to the charity of your choice.

Burial Mountain View Baptist Church, Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South
Carolina [The Blacksburg location appears to be an error. The memorial with
a photo of his grave (see above) reports him buried in the Mountain View
Baptist Church Cemetery, in York, York County, South Carolina, a few miles to
the east of Blacksburg. The York cemetery is also where his parents are
buried. See above memorial, which has a photo of the burial marker and
mortuary name.]

I have been able to find very little on Inez L Jenkins. I assume that Jenkins
was her maiden name, but it could have been a first married name.

I found one reference that is a close match, but with a photo taken in
Indiana. This is possible at a later stage after she was in Arizona. This
was a notation referring to a private genealogy, so I have not seen tthe full
information, but this does have inez' father's name.

Notes for Ione A JENKINS

In the 1930 census, Ione appears with her father and stepmother. Note that the
two younger sons are listed before the older child, whose name appears to be
Ione. This is because the children of the current marriage are usually listed
first. The entry, however, lists her as a Son and Male, but the name looks
like Ione, a girl's name. This child is out of the household by 1940.

Ira's wife Della's grave says she died in 1918. I have not found Ira in the
1920 census. In 1930, Ira is with his second wife, named Laurie or Laudie.
Names are scrawled badly and difficult to interpret. Family genealogies
report her as Laurie. For some reason a 17-year-old reported as a Son is
listed last. This is one of the uncertain names. It looks like Ione, which
is normally a girl's name.

1930 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 10 April, Justice Precinct 3,

Jenkins, Lane Son M W 4 TX TX TX [b abt 1926]
Jenkins, Ione A (?) Son M W 17 TX TX TX [b abt 1913]

Ione would be the daughter of Ira's first wife, since we know she did not die
until 1918. This is probably why she is listed last even though older.

Note that the birth place of Ira's father is now reported as Mississippi,
which matches earlier records of census and family information for John C
Jenkins. But in 1910 it was Alabama, and in 1900 Tnnessee. Also his brothers
Ebb in 1910 reported his father as born in Alabama, and in 1920 Tennessee and
in 1930 Georgia. Their brother Cullen or Curly, reported it in 1920 as
Tennessee.

In 1940, Ira is a widow, his wife dying in 1939. The sons named Lane and
Davis in 1903 are still in the household, and DAvis has married.

I took the name of the married son here as Davis. But it looks something like
Doris, even though he is male. I find the name in some genealogies as Doris
also. Census transcriptions are varied. At least one genealogy, however,
cites for this person a Texas Death Record for a Doris Jenkins who is Male.
