They divorced in 1975 ------------------------- According to my Aunt Kathy, my mother had converted to Catholicism in high school because she had a girlfriend who was Catholic. She was attending college, and her plan was to become a nun. She wore a necklace with a cross on it outside her sweater and ran into my father [George E Schauf], he being Catholic. They married, and he was going to college with the major of engineering, and had completed three years. They had three children at this time; me, my brother Bill, and my sister, Caroline. My dad decided to become a doctor, and went to medical school, where he not only got his medical degree, but got a masters in psychology as well. He practiced medicine as a general practitioner in a small town, Riverbank, in California. Heâs retired. My mother divorced him, but he had the marriage annulled. He married for the second time to someone who had been working at his office for a long time. They are still married and have two grown daughters. ... My Aunt Kathy [Kathlyn Jenkins Lanford] says that my mother was the smartest of all her brothers and sisters, and was the most intellectual. -- Theresa Mogadam, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 3 November 2018 ------------------------- California Divorce Index Joanne Jenkins Divorce Feb 1975 Stanislaus County, California Spouse's Name George E Schauf Joanne Jenkins, 88 (in 2018) Modesto, CA AKA: Joanne Schauf Joanne Jenkins is 88 years old and was born on 11/8/1929. This son of John Jenkins and Julia Ward is reported in the 1900 census as Curley and in the 1920 census as Cull. Curly is usually a nickname. There is a family tradition that John also had a brother named Curly, but Jenkins family researchers have been unable to find any documentation of anyone of this name. Another child named Curly may have died very young. Also there is a family tradition of a brother named Cullen, and Cull is a short form of that. Cullen (Cull) and Curley could be the same person. Here the same person seems to have both names. Could it be that it was this grandson of John Jenkins, a brother of Joseph Asa Jenkins, that Joe's children remembered vaguely and incorrectly as a brother of their father, rather than their own cousin they never knew? 1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 20 June, Justice Precinct 3, District 22, page 17A, Hse/Fam #285 Jenkins, Julia Head W F Sept 1856 43 Widow Bore 7 children/6 living GA GA SC Farmer Owns Farm Jenkins, Curly Son W M Apr 1884 16 TX GA TX In 1904, Cull married Ada Dycus. There are discrepancies in sources as to the middle name of John Jenkins. Harold K Christian finds family information seeming to indicate that the son born at that date had a middle initial C, and some corollary information that the full name might have been Cullen. In the 1860 census, however, he is reported as J W. "One should note that the oldest known son of the family was named John "Cull" (Cullen?) Jenkins .... The second child in the enumeration was identified by the initials "J C", age 10 (born about 1850, a male, with "Miss" listed as his place of birth. He is believed to be Joseph's oldest son, John C. (possibly "Cull" or Cullen)." -- Harold K Christian, Jenkins Journal, Jan 1982, p2, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf See the census transcription below. The child is actually listed as J W. The initials J C appear to be from family sources, representing John Cullen. JC had a son also named the same, called Cull. The nickname Cull seems to be used at times for both father and son. The Cass County descendants know the son as Cull. In May 2009 I found confirmation that the correct name was indeed John Cullen Jenkins. Dorothy Wommack McNeely, a descendant of Cull, had organized much information on Cull's family and descendants. -- Cass County Texas - Americas Melting Pot, http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=8508600&pid=-939422263 The 1860 census reports him as J W. This may be an error on the part of the census taker. It is possible that the initial W for John was confused there and in some sources other with the next-born son William, whose middle initial also varies in sources. 1860 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 17 October, Beat #3, Post Office Unionville & Cusseta, Page 73, Hse #483, Fam #495 Jinkins Jno 32 M W Farmer 300 SC Cannot read and write Jinkins L 36 F W MS Jinkins J W 10 M W MS Attended school during the last year In the 1860 census, the son listed as J W should have been J C, being named John Cullen, documented in family records and memory and other records. In the 1910 census, JC's birth state is different from previous censuses, as reported by his son (or understood by the enumerator). This census reports that J Stewart's father (JC) was born in Georgia, instead of Mississippi. She mentions a John Jenkins who she thought was Thomas' brother. She refers to her granddad, and finally does identify him as Stephen Wadell Jenkins, Thomas' father is not mentioned. She mentions no location, so it is not clear how these individuals might be related to John Cullen Jenkins' family. None of the names she mentions are known in the family of Joseph Sanford Jenkins. ----------------- The little boy in the front of the picture: That looks like my Granddad. I believe that John Jenkins was Thomas C Jenkins' brother and Thomas's son (whom I believe is the little boy) was Stephen Wadell Jenkins. I think he died in 1889 in Arkansas County. I don't know hardly anything about his Arkansas family. Didn't know till I started researching our family that he was married to my 3rd time great grandma Sarah Greely, they had 4 kids. Although the fourth is my great great grandpa John Samuel Tobe Jenkins, there is no census record on him but I know this was their last child." -- Donna Winstead, comment on Nancy Ann Jackson on Ancestry, 27 February 2015 ---------------- I had some correspondence with a man named Wylodean Burrell Edwards a few years back. He related to me that his grandmother lived to be 99 years and 10 months, died in 1985 with a exceptional memory of family history. Nancy was the subject of my question to him as she was not on the 1850 census but was present on the 1860 & 1870 census. I asked him if she was a daughter, daughter-in-law, niece or perhaps a 2nd wife. He related that "Tobe" was the illegitimate son of Nancy Jenkins, (believed to be) Samuel's daughter. His grandmother told him that the family believed Tobe's father to be a Burden (possibly William). William Burden was married to Samuel's daughter Deborah. Most family trees have Tobe listed as a son of Ephraim Jenkins, but I have not found him on any census record with Ephraim. At any rate, he did not believe my line connected to Samuel as James Richard Jenkins' name did not appear in the Bible record or in court records. -- Barbara Jackson, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 7 April 2017 ---------------- "This is my great great grandpa. Everyone claims that he is not the son of Ephraim because he is not listed on the census. But back then they would sometimes just copy info from the previous census which would have been done before he was born. If you could see a pic of Ephraim and my grandpa you would know that Ephraim was my granpa's great grandpa, they greatly resembled each other. The age here also fails to match Julia's birth date in 1857. But every census age for Julia matches this. Even the 1900 census reports her birth date as September 1856 (while the date on her grave is 17 September 1857). But even so, the 1900 census still reports Julia's age as 48! The number of children matches Julia's report in the 1900 census, when she was living with her son Ira. Birth birth state information differs here, being Alabama for Jane and her parents. All previous censuses have reported Julia born in Georgia. But Alabama matches this census report of the birth state of Stewart's mother. There is another Texas birth record of a child who must have died before the 1910 census. But no death or burial record has been found for this child. No geneder is reported for this infant. Nona Lee matches Nona Lee, daughter of JS in Wommack-Jenkins genealogy by Dottie Wommack McNeely, a Jenkins descendant. Nona's age of 2 months in April 1910 matches the birth date on this grave. These deaths in 1918 were probably because of the flu epidemic. Jack matches a son Jack in Dottie Wommack's Cass County genealogy, but she has no date of birth for Jack. But Jack here was born in 1906, and does NOT appear in the 1910 census of the family. Floyd's reported age of 2 years in 1910 census above would make him born in 1908, not 1906. But 2 years error is not unusual in censuses, due to different census dates and where birth dates fall. Dottie has no Floyd in this family, though he is in the 1910 census. The death and burial of Stewart and his daughter Nona in 1918 and his son Jack in 1922 tells us that Stewart and Irene moved from Cass County, Texas, to McCurtain county, Oklahoma (just north of the Red River) before 1920 and Irene continued there after 1920. No record of Irene and Jack in the 1920 census has been found. J. 1850 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 5 September, Hse/Fam #136 Samuel Jenkins 66 M Farmer $300 Real Estate b SC Joseph Jenkins 7 M b SC Billie Jones, a Jenkins-Burrell researcher with whom we have worked on some of this Jenkins lineage, reports this person born in 1843 as a son of Samuel Jenkins and Sarah Catherineas Samuel Joseph Jenkins. However, these parents had an earlier son born in 1818 named Samuel Joseph Jenkins. The younger Joseph Jenkisn was reported in the 1850 census in the household of his father samuel Jenkins as Joseph Jenkins age 7. This Joseph seems to be a second son, born 25 years later and known only as Joseph. It was fairly common for the same family to have two children with the same or similar names born great distances apart. Samuel Joseph Jenkins, Birth 1843, Death 14 August 1862 Meridian, Lauderdale, Mississippi, Civil War: Joined the 44th Mississippi and died in Meridian of illness; never served in a battle -- Billie Jones, Comment on her profile of Samuel Joseph Jones, Jenkins-Burrell Tree, Ancestry, https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/78124322/person/34406806256/facts Some sources report a Samuel Joseph Jenkins reported in some sources for this family, reported born in about 1842, married to a Sarah, who was reported together in the 1970 census, so that could not be either of these two sons of Samuel and Sara Catherine, who were both reported to have died in the Civil War. Both Samuel Joseph (born 1818) and Joseph (born 1943) were enlisted in the 44th Mississippi Regiment. Samuel Joseph was reported to have died 17 August 1862 and Joseph 14 August 1862. These dates of death could be different transcriptions of information, or mistranscriptions, but birth dates are not compatible.
Family information from the previous generation indicates that in his youth Joseph Asa was called Jode (I think it was pronounced Jodie). An early family notation also spells his middle name as Acy. My dad, Orville Lee Jenkins, also called his brother Asa by this name all his life. Joseph Asa was born in Cass County, Texas. In the 1880 census, Joe is reported as Joe Asa, age 16. This would mean he was born about 1864. No family researcher has been able to find his family in the 1870 census in any state. Joe's mother, Lucinda Taylor Jenkins, died around 1869. It is likely the family was out of state and traveling at the time of the census. 1880 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 16 June, District 12, Precinct 3, Page 17, House and Family #144 Jenkins, Joseph W M 52 Farmer SC SC SC Jenkins, Louisa W F 42 Wife Keeps House Miss Miss Ireland Jenkins, Mary L W F 21 Daughter Farming Ga SC Miss Jenkins, Lucinda W F 19 Daughter Farming Ga SC Miss Jenkins, Margaret C W F 17 Daughter Farming Tx SC Miss Jenkins, Joe Asa W M 16 Son Farming Tx SC Miss [b abt 1864] Joe's age is reported here as 16, which would make him born about 1864. Since his birth date is near the end of June, and the census date was actually 1 June, it should mean he was born in 1863, if they were really being accurate. But the birth date on his gravestone is 25 June 1866. The reported age in 1910 was 43, which would match the stated birth date. In 1879, there was a tax record in Cass county for a J A Jenkins, on the same page and three lines under an Elijah Jenkins. Neither Elijah or J A Jenkins is reported as owning any land. Neither did they report any personal property, which probably indicated they were living on their parents property in their parents home. The only tax paid was the state and county poll tax. Texas, County Tax Rolls Jenkins, Elijah, no personal property, state poll tax $2.00, county poll tax $1.00, Total Tax $3.00 Jenkins, J A, no personal property, state poll tax $2.00, county poll tax $1.00, Total Tax $3.00 1879 Tax Assessment, Cass County, p 45 No ages are reported on these tax rolls. But according to the received birth date of 28 June 1866 in family records, Joseph Asa would have been about 13 in 1879. By the age reported in the 1880 census, he would have been 16, but this would still have been under legal age. It is unclear if he could have voted and thus needed to pay the poll tax. It appears, however, that the age of majority in Texas was 21, and the law provided for the removing of the disability of minority at age 17. This law was passed in 1871, so was in effect in 1879. But it not likely the birth date of Joseph Asa Jenkins has been misremembered and misrecorded in family memory and records to the discrepancy between 1866 and 1862, which it would be if he was a legal adult and could already vote in 1879. Further, there is nothing in Jenkins family memory about Joe gaining adult status early through legal means. Since this J A Jenkins is not likely the son of Joseph Sanford Jenkins of Cass County, it seems likely that this J A as well as the Elijah on the same page are some kinfolks of Joseph Sanford. John Cullen Jenkins named a son Ebby Elijah. On 27 March 1887 Joseph Asa married Hester Smith, whose family lived near the Jenkins farm. The date on the Marriage Certificate issued in Cass County, Texas, is 25 March 1887, issued to J A Jenkins and Annie Smith. Texas, Select County Marriage Index, 1837-1977 J A Jenkins Gender Male Spouse Annie Smith Marriage 27 Mar 1887 Cass, Texas ------------------ Joseph Asa was first married to Hester Ann Smith, daughter of Benjamin Frank Smith and his wife Mary Isabella (Henson) Chapel, widow of Archy Chapel of Cass County, Texas. During the 1952 interview referenced above, Joseph said he first noticed Hester Ann at church. He said he was so taken by her beauty that he didn't hear a word that the preacher said. Four years later Joseph saw Hester for the second time. She had accompanied her half-brother Thomas Jefferson Chapel and his wife Mary Lide (or Lydia), Joseph's older sister, on a visit to the Jenkins home. Joseph said he again "got to looking at Hester Ann and it wasn't long until they were married." At that time Hester was 16 and Joseph was "a couple of months short of being 21. A later news story about her and the Christian family refers to her son going back in 1900 to sell the (Christian) family farm after her death. It may be she decided not to move to Indian Territory, and died in the meantime. But family tradition has not comment on her death or burial. Writing about the family of Joseph Asa Jenkins, Harold tells us Joseph Asa moved his family from their Texas home in 1890 or 1891. Family tradition and later evidence indicate that Joseph Asa's father Joseph Sanford Jenkins moved with his son to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. At this time Joseph Sanford was about 65, and Joseph Asa was about 25. Joseph Asa settled near Marlow, in what is now Stephens County, Oklahoma. In his narrative about Joseph Asa Jenkins, Harold tells us about the move: "Joseph said he loaded all of his possessions into two covered wagons for the move. It took him sixteen days to make the trip from Dalton, Texas, to Healdton, Indian Territory. Two of Joseph's brother-in-laws are believed to have been living in Healdton at that time. One is believed to have been Joseph Benjamin Christian and his wife Catherine Smith, sister of Hester Ann. The other is believed to have been Nelson Winter and his wife Margaret Catherine Jenkins, Joseph's sister" (page 13, The Jenkins Family History, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf). Margaret Catherine Jenkins was the daughter of Joseph Sanford Jenkins and Lucinda Amanda Taylor. Joseph Benjamin Christian was the stepson of Joseph Sanford, the son of Joseph Sanford's second wife (or third according to one line of family tradition), Luisa (Taylor?) Christian. Christians married Jenkinses in three generations of life together in Texas and Oklahoma. Descendants of Joseph Sanford Jenkins in Cass County have contributed two old photographs that are thought to have been taken of the Jenkins family crossing the Red River on that trek into Indian Territory. These photos show a covered wagon and several family members on a flatbed ferry, about to launch. Joseph Asa's father Joseph Sanford died in 1893 and was buried in Marlow. There is no record of the date or place of death of Joseph Sanford's wife Louisa Christian Jenkins. It is not known if she died before the move to Indian Territory, or died en route. She is not buried in Marlow, and the family has no information on her death or burial. ======================= Healdton was in the western side of what became Carter County, Oklahoma, not far from Ardmore. Though Joe's father Joseph Sanford was buried in Marlow, we find that in December of that year, Joseph and Hettie's daughter Sallie was born in December 1893 in Wapanucka, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. Wapanucka is in what became Johnston County, also in what was then Chickasaw Nation. Wapanucka is some distance west from Ardmore, and some distance from Healdton. Wapanucka had been the location of a Confederate hospital and prison, after the Chickasaw Nation joined the Confederate States of America. "The Chickasaw government joined the Confederate States of America after the outbreak of the Civil War. The Union army ordered its troops to evacuate Fort Washita, Fort Cobb and Fort Arbuckle. When Confederate troops occupied the area, they used the stone building at Wapanucka as a hospital and a prison." -- "Johnston County, Oklahoma," Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnston_County,_Oklahoma But Marlow, the county seat of Stephens County, where Joe's family are living in 1900, is even farther north and west. Perhaps Joseph Sanford actually died out some distance from Marlow, at home or on the trail, in or near Wapanucka, and the body was taken for report of death to be buried in Marlow. They moved after a short while to Marlow, where Joe leased a farm for a while. He moved into Marlow town shortly after Sallie was born in December 1893. "Family tradition indicates Joseph helped build the railroad through Marlow. It is believed that he was engaged in cutting trees and splitting them for railroad ties during the period 1893-1894, living with his family in the vicinity of Wapanucka [Chickasaw Nation], Indian Territory." -- Harold K Christian, Jenkins Family History, p 14, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf Joseph Asa with wife Hester (Hattie) and family are recorded in the 1900 Chickasaw Nation (Stephens County, Oklahoma) census. In December 1903 or January 1904 (after the birth of Thomas Asa on the farm 3 November 1903), the family moved into Bradley town, to run a store and serve as postmaster. They lived there till after the birth of Nannie May in October 1905, probably moving away after the winter in 1906. "Asa, the second child of this marriage was born on 3 November 1903 while the family was living on the farm near Bradley. Following Asa's birth, Joseph moved his family into Bradley. He purchased a mercantile store from a Mr. Cater. During this period he sold groceries and drygoods and also served as Bradley Postmaster." -- Jenkins Family History by Harold K Christian, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf, p 16 "Nannie May was born on 29 October 1905, probably following Joseph's move from the farm into town at Bradley. Apparently Joseph returned with his family to Marlow from Bradley about 1906. Joseph and Virginia lost their baby daughter Nannie May who died on 23 September 1906. There are a couple of other reports of Georgia as her birthplace, but most censuses report Texas as her state of birth. In fact, her parents are reported in the 1880 census in McLennan County, Texas. Julia was born a few months later that same year. The Baby Jinkins here is Bud (Arthur Carthal), whose date of birth is 28 December 1909. This date is reported by Harold Christian from family source, and was also given to me directly by Bud's nephew Asa Lee Jenkins. Bud's gravestone in Fairlawn (Chickasha, Oklahoma) Cemetery has only the year 1909. At any rate, we would expect to see Bud here with an age of about 4 months. But in May 2009, Bud's son (my cousin) Carthal Trent told me he had always heard that his father was born in Mt View. This would mean that Bud was not born until 1910, which would account for his not being recorded in the May 1910 census in Marlow. But did family members remember the year of Bud's birth incorrectly? According to information compiled by Harold Christian for the Jenkins family, Joe Jenkins moved his family to Mountain View shortly after the 1910 census. He first farmed on a farm of his brother-in-law Bill Christian, then moved to an Indian lease farm. Harold Christian tells the story: "By about 1910 he had decided to move his family from Marlow to Mountain View, Oklahoma, where he was to settle for a few years supporting his family by farming. ... "Some time after the marriage of daughter Sallie and Cleve Christian in November 1911] Joseph is believed to have moved his family from Bill Christian's farm at Oakdale [north of Mountain View just across the county line into Caddo County] to an Indian lease he subsequently obtained southeast of Mountain View." -- Jenkins Family History by Harold K Christian, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf, p 17 There is a story of their moving to Vancouver, British Columbia, for a period before World War I. Joseph Asa mentions this in his television interview on WKY-TV in Oklahoma City in 1955. Some comments from the story, by Joseph or from some of his children's memories, are unclear whether the whole family or just some of the family moved to Canada. They returned to Mt View after this interim of working in Vancouver. In March 2009, I found out more specific details about the trip to Vancouver in a newspaper story that my step mother gave me among items that had belonged to my father. This clarified that Joe had moved to "Vancouver, B. C., where Mr. Jenkins worked on the Canadian-Alaskan Highway project. When war [WWI] broke out in 1914, they returned to Mountain View." [See full story below.] When Joseph went to Vancouver has not been discovered. But a Canadian immigration record records Jennie's entry with all the children in December 1912. The Jenkins Family History by Harold Keith Christian, p 19, reports that "[After the birth of Netheline in December 1918] Joseph is believed to have moved his family from Mountain View first to a farm south of Fort Cobb and sometime thereafter into Fort Cobb." However, they were still enumerated as a family in Mt View in the 1920 census. And Jennie was active in the local Democratic Party there, being appointed as a precinct committee member in Mt View in October 1920. 1920 Federal Census, Kiowa County, Oklahoma, 3 January, Mt View, District 14, Page 1A, Hse/Fam #1 Jenkins, Joseph A Head M W 54 TX NC MS Farmer Jenkins, Juliva V Wife FW 39 TX GA NC Jenkins, Ronda F Dau F W 12 OK TX TX Jenkins, Author C Son M W 10 OK TX TX Jenkins, Orville L Son M W 7 OK TX TX Jenkins, Gladys L Dau F W 5 OK TX TX Jenkins, Matty N Dau F W 1 OK TX TX There is thus some discrepancy over the times as given by Harold, from family memories he collected. In the 1920 census, he is still farming in Mt View Township. He moved to Fort Cobb some time later, or perhaps he took the orphanage position in Ft Cobb while retaining the farm near Mt. View, and the family was still living there during the 1920 census. Harold Christian continues: "[After moving to Fort Cobb], it is believed he managed an orphan's home for about the first year. Apparently not satisfied with that he again entered the profession of law enforcement, first serving as a deputy to the Town Marshall and subsequently as Town Marshall." A report from his daughter Mabel would place the beginning of the Marshall job in October 1921, though they could have been living in the town already before that time. Harold Christian quotes Joe's daughter Mabel as saying: "When Kerwin was about 3-4 days old, Poppa was made City Marshall." Kerwyn (Charles) was born in October 1921. If Mabel's memory is right, then Joseph Asa became Marshall of Fort Cobb in October 1921. Joe was a peace officer for a total of 20 years, serving as chief of police in Marlow, deputy sheriff in Mountain View and city marshal of Fort Cobb. Here is the information for this family from the 1930 census record from Fort Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma. Note that the birthplace of Julia as well as Joe is given as Texas. This corroborates earlier reports that she alone of all the Terry children was born in Texas, though those after her were born in Georgia until the final child born in Oklahoma. In the Notes for Julia Virginia Terry I detail the 1880 census record reporting Julia's parents in McLennan County, Texas, where Julia was born in Lorena in December 1880. The Terrys appear to have moved to Texas with other Terrys, but then Thomas Duncan decided for some reason to move back to the Terrys' home area in Murray County, Georgia. 1930 Federal Census, Caddo County, Oklahoma, 1 April, Fort Cobb, District 26, p 9A, Hse #181, Fam #215 Joe A Jenkins Head M W 63 TX MS MS Julia Jenkins Wife F W 49 TX GA NC Carthel Jenkins son M W 20 OK TX TX Orville Jenkins son M W 17 OK TX TX Lahoma Jenkins dau F W 12 OK TX TX Netheline Jenkins dau F W 11 OK TX TX Virginia Jo Jenkins dau F W 4 yrs 8 mos OK TX TX Rondafaye Jenkins dau F W 22 OK TX TX Note that Rhonda's name is written all as one name rather than two, as the family seem to have it. Joseph became somewhat renowned as a lawman during his days at Fort Cobb. Stories about some of Joesph's spectacular experiences as a lawman were reported in the Fort Cobb paper in 1931 and 1932. A line in the obituary of his young daughter Virginia Jo, who died in a gun accident in 1930, describes him as a night watchman. "The Jenkins family has lived in Fort Cobb for the past nine years where Mr. Jenkins is employed as night watchman." -- The Carnegie Herald, July 2, 1930, cited in Find A Grave Memorial #8771471, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=68771471 The 1940 census reports that Joe and Jennie lived in or near Ft Cobb in 1935, then moved to Chickasha somewhere before 1940. The story of their 50th wedding anniversary reports the 20th Street address. Here is the news story of Joe and Jennie's 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1951, which provides rich detail about their life and the places they lived. The open-house celebration for them was held in the home of their son Bud (Arthur Carthal), just a few blocks away from the home on 20th Street. ================================== J. A. Jenkinses Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary Six of Seven Children Plan Open House Fifty years ago last Thursday, a 20-year-old girl slipped unnoticed through a window of a neighbor's house in Marlow and drove away in a buggy with her financé to be married. Today, fifty years and three days later, the couple will celebrate their golden, wedding anniversary. They are Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jenkins, 1016 South 20th. The 1901 wedding ceremony was performed by the preacher as the couple sat in the buggy in front of his house. Plans for the dreamed-of church wedding were forgotten after the brides parents voiced objections to the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, ages 84 and 70, will be honored at an open house from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. today in the home of son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Jenkins, 1522 South 17th. Six of the honorees' seven children will be hosts. A gold-and-white color scheme will be used in decorations for the reception. Punch and cake will be served from a table centered with a layout of California golden fruit. Over the mantel will be a large gold-and-white framed picture of the couple taken shortly after their wedding. The Oklahoma pioneers were both born in Texas. Mr. Jenkins moved in 1890 to the site of what is now Marlow where he farmed and later served as City marshal. Mrs. Jenkins, then Julia Virginia Terry, moved with her family from Georgia to Marlow in January of 1901. Two and one-half months after their meeting, they were married. Mr. Jenkins moved his family to Mountain View in 1910. But soon they were off to Vancouver, B. C., where Mr. Jenkins worked on the Canadian-Alaskan Highway project. When war broke out in 1914, they returned to Mountain View. The family lived in Fort Cobb from 1921 until 1935. There also Mr. Jenkins farmed and served for a time as city marshal. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins have lived in Chickasha since 1935, when Mr. Jenkins retired. Mr. Jenkins is still quite active, but failing eyesight has slowed down his reading habits. However, a reading record machine has solved this problem pretty well. His main interest is his church work, and he takes a lively interest in world affairs. Both he and his wife are members of the 12th Street Missionary Baptist church. Mrs. Jenkins is particularly interested in her flower garden and, of course, her grandchildren. Three who live in Chickasha, the children of the A. C. Jenkinses, "spend lots of time with us," she says, proudly. They are Carthel [Carthal] Trent, 13, Mike Thomas, 8, and Larhonda, 5. Mrs. Jenkins says she and her husband have had a full and most interesting life together, although nothing spectacular has ever happened to them. She perhaps considers today as spectacular as any other day in their lives. For numerous daughters, sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends have descended upon Chickasha to honor them. The six children who are their hosts for the day are Mrs. Mabel Hill and Miss Netheline Jenkins of Oklahoma City, Asa Jenkins of Anadarko, Mrs. Russell Boyd of Amarillo, Texas, Orville Jenkins of Quanah, Texas, and A. C. Jenkins of Chickasha. One other daughter, Mrs. Charles R. Henry [Hendron] of San Gabriel, Calif., was unable to come for the reunion. Also here are daughter-in-law [Mrs.] Asa Lee Jenkins Jr [should be Asa Jenkins & should not be Jr] and son, grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Lee Jenkins Jr [should not be Jr] and son Ronnie, Oklahoma City; son-in-law Russell Boyd and grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles K. Hill and son, Charles Mark, Amarillo. Mrs. Cleve Christian, Chickasha, is the only one of Mr. Jenkins four children by a previous marriage who will be here for the anniversary observance. The other three are James E. Jenkins and B. J. Jenkins of Buena Park, Calif., and Mrs. Neil Yates of Aledo, Texas. Four sisters and one brother of Mrs. Jenkins who are also here are: Mrs. W. C. Madison, Mrs. Elmer Wagnon, Mrs. Best [Bert] Lewis and Arthur Terry of Marlow, and Mrs. E. P. Hill of Duncan. Mrs. Annie Tabors, Mountain View, a niece of Mr. Jenkins, also will be present. The listed relatives are only those who sent word they would join Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins in the celebration. But Mrs. Jenkins points out the possibilities for a larger group are great. For there are 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition, Mr. Jenkins has 28 other grandchildren and 39 other great-grandchildren. And then, of course, there is a 50 year accumulation of friends. -- The Chickasha (Oklahoma) Daily Express, Sunday, 1 April 1951 ================================== U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 Chickasha, Oklahoma, City Directory 1952 Jenkins Appliance Co (Arthur C Jenkins) hse hold appliance 224 Chickasha av Jenkins Arthur C (Dorothy; Jenkins Appliance) h 1522 S 17th Jenkins Jos A (Virgina V) h 1016 S 20th Jenkins Orville (Jenkins Radio Co) Jenkins Radio Co (Orville L Jenkins) J A Hulse Mgr, Philco Refrigerators, Television, Radio, Appliances-Sales & Service 312 Choctaw av, Tel 3260 (For further information, see page 34, Buyer's Guide) U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 Chickasha, Oklahoma, City Directory 1956, p 111 Jenkins Jos A (Julia V) h 1016 S 20th In this 1956 directory is also a listing for Joe and Jennie's daughter-in-law Eyline and her son Trent. I have noticed a variation in the various family references to Joseph Benjamin Jenkins. Throughout his life, he went by Benjamin. He is listed as Benjamin in many public sources, and much of our family correspondence about him. I have seen public references to him as both Joseph Benjamin and Benjamin Joseph. His family commonly called him Ben, and we nephews and nieces called him Uncle Ben. In the Christiansen and Winans genealogies, he is listed only as Benjamin Jenkins. The common way I have seen or heard his full name is Joseph Benjamin Jenkins. I found that on the JenkinsLife.com website, members of his family have referred to him there as Benjamin Joseph Jenkins. That site is managed by a grandson, and one of the contributors is a daughter of Ben. In previous email correspondence, a great grandson refers to Ben as I have known his name, Joseph Benjamin. Information from Julia Virginia Jenkins, Ben's step-mother, gives his name as Joseph Benjamin. This is in family information given to Lou Ila Jenkins in the 1950s. Ben's grandson Bruce Jenkins says his father Brian told him that Ben changed the order of his names after an event in the army, when he and some army buddies in San Francisco were attacked by a Chinese gang. Ben was so badly injured doctors had to put a plate in his head. At some time after that event he changed his name by switching the order of his two given names. Since early sources, such as the 1910 census cited below, show his name as Joseph B(enjamin), it appears that this was the original form of his name. This would follow the pattern of names in his father Joseph Asa and grandfather Joseph Sanford. Also note his cousin Joseph Benjamin Christian. He is in the 1900 Chickasaw Nation census as Joseph B Jenkins. In his 1917 WWI registration Ben reported that he was born in Texarkana, not too far from Linden, where the family was living at the time. In the Jenkins Family History, Harold Christian reported from his research that the Ben's birth place was Linden, Texas, where the family farm was located. I tend to think Ben's report is correct. 1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 19 June, District 164, Marlow, Page #310, Family #133 Jenkins, Joe Head W M JUN 1866 33 Married 13 yrs TX SC GA Farmer Jenkins, Hattie Wife W F JUL 1870 29 Married 13 yrs 6 children/4 living TX TN TX Jenkins, Joseph B Son W M OCT 1889 10 TX TX TX Joseph Benjamin Jenkins married Bessie Amanda Ann Winans in October 1907. Bessie was 19. Harold K. Christian reports this as a short marriage. I estimate that the marriage lasted between one and two years. The marriage register gives his age as 18. His brother Everett also married in 1907. Ben is known to have moved to Mountain View to work with his brother Everett in a dry cleaning business, but it is not certain when this move occurred. This marriage took place less than 1 month before Indian Territory was merged with Oklahoma Territory and part of Texas to become the State of Oklahoma. The Texas county had been ceded to the US for incorporation into Oklahoma Territory in 1896. The new state also included what had been called the Cherokee Stip, now the Panhandle of Oklahoma. This had originally been Texas territory and had been ceded earlier. One of the counties in the Panhandle of Oklahoma was named Texas County in honor of its earlier status in Texas. No record has been found for Ben in the 1910 census. Ben's registration for military service for WWI, his card has the name Benjamin J and he signs his name as Benjamin. In most records in his early life he was Joseph Benjamin, but always wenbt by Ben. This seems to indicate he changed the order of his names while still a teenager, before he entered the service. His address is given as Healdton (Carter County), Oklahoma. In later life Ben is flexible with the order of his names. He is found both ways in records without clear demarcation of time or situation. Variations in dates often differ in that era. Names do too. A person might have a totally different name from one census to the next. Most census enumerators recorded only one name, not the full name of the person. In earlier years they wrote whatever the family told them the child's name was, and many nicknames appear as the only name in censuses. People were not oriented to the formalities of dates in the objective sense that we are. Ben probably had not focused so much on the actual date, and the slight difference in dates could reflect a lapse of memory on the exact details. The variations in name could also represent a cavalier attitude toward a name. Your name could be whatever you wanted it to be. Many cultures are still that way today, and a person will change a name at a particular stage or event in his life. In the 1920 census in Oakdale, Washita County, Oklahoma, he is listed as Benjamin J Jenkins. He and his second wife Lena Stinson have a son reported here as 1 year and 2 months old.. The exact birth date of their first child was 29 October 1918. So we can estimate they married in 1917. 1920 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 23 January, Oakdale, District 192, page 8A, Hse #128, Fam #127 Jenkins, Benjamin J Head Rents M W 30 TX TX TX Farmer Jenkins, Lena F Wife F W 18 OK MO KY Jenkins, Benjamin J Son M W 1 yr 2 mos OK TX OK Oakdale was an early name for Mountain View. In 1930 and in the 1934 directory, he was Joseph B. From this time sequence, we take it his original name was Joesph Benjamin, as remembered by Orville Lee Jenkins and the Oklahoma set of the family. At any rate, he went by Ben. We also find that in the 1946 Bellfower City Directory Ben was listed as Joseph B Jenkins, indicating the "change" of name order was not so permanent and significant and later thought by some. The parents of Joseph Sanford Jenkins have not been determined. The name Sanford as a first or middle given name is found in other Jenkins family lines in Virginia and North Carolina, as well as South Carolina, where Joseph Sanford was born, according to family information and census reports. One such line is the lineage of William Jenkins, born about 1675, probably in Virginia, where he was married and raised his family. HIs descendants have an individual named Sanford in every generation up to the present era. It seems quite likely this is related to the same broader Jenkins clan that Joseph Sanford belongs to. -- William Sanford Jenkins, Jenkins Research, http://www.jenkinsresearch.org/william0001.htm The family's name was spelled Jinkins in the 1860 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas. There were many Jinkins families in Texas at that time, and some families still spell the name this way. This spelling is also found in UK families. Harold Christian was the first person to fully probe the Jenkins family sources to compile a story of Joseph Sanford's family. In the private paper Jenkins Family History, Harold says about Joseph's arrival in Texas (p 7): "Harvey Christian recalled having been told by Joseph Asa, Joseph's youngest son, that Joseph Sanford moved his family into Texas on a flatboat -- landing at Jefferson's Landing, Jefferson, Marion County, Texas. Joseph freighted supplies for a time from Jefferson's Landing to Atlanta in Northeast Cass County, possibly before moving to the Dalton area." -- Harold K Christian, "Jenkins Family History," p 7, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf They may not have been in the Jefferson Landing area very long, since in the 1860 census their child L Jenkins is reported born in Georgia. And they are resident in Cass County just north of Marion County, by October 1860 for the census there. Note also that in the 1860 census, the name is recorded as Jno, an abbreviation for John. The details of the family fit the known family of Joseph Sanford Jenkins. Errors in names are common in the censuses. I have not found Joseph in the 1850 or 1870 censuses. The 1860 census reports JS's age as 32; the 1880 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, reports Joseph Sanford's age as 52. This would consistently put his birth year at 1828. Other sources, however, indicate a birth year of 1826. Ancestry.com estimates 1825. By 1884 Cusseta reported two gins, a gristmill, a school, and a population of 100. By 1896 its population had fallen to fifty. In 1914 the population of the community was 100, but by 1933 it had fallen to sixty, with two rated businesses. In 1990 Cusseta reported thirty residents and no rated businesses. Analyzing the birth states of the children here, assuming this is correct, we can determine that they moved from Mississippi between 1850 and 1853, and were apparently resident in Georgia through to about 1859. They moved to Texas in time to be enumerated in the Cass County census in October 1860. This census, as well as 1880, confirms the family information that Joseph Sanford Jenkins is from the South Carolina Jenkins clan. I have been unable to identify the exact family of Joseph Sanford in South Carolina. The names Joseph, John and Sanford, occur in various combinations among the Jenkins families of North and South Carolina. Jenkins families in North Carolina also report that their family traditions tell them they have kinfolks in South Carolina, but they have not found the exact connections either. The name Jenkins is very common in the Carolinas, as well as in Virginia and Kentucky. Families from many of these lines moved west and found themselves in the same counties of Texas and Indian Territory. Some came into Oklahoma from Missouri. We know that the Jenkinses were in South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. It is likely there were several unrelated streams of migrations from Wales and England at that time. I have found several families of Jenkins or Jinkins from South Carolina in north Texas counties from 1860 to 1880 of an age to be Joseph's brothers, cousins and uncles. No connection has yet been established. Also in this 1860 household are Nancy Day, sister of Lucinda Taylor, and her daughter L E: Day Nancy A 35 F W MS Day L E 9 F W MS Attended school during the last year There is some uncertainty about the period in Mississippi, with various family stories or references to kinfolks in Mississippi. Joseph Sanford's birth date from our family records (October 14, 1826) would mean was only 19 when he married Lucinda, making the marriage in about 1845. He was said to have married and fathered 2 daughters in MS before marrying Lucinda. At age 19, that does not leave much time for a first wife before Lucinda. Perhaps any earlier children were illegitimate. The Cass County branch of the family have a tradition that Joseph Sanford was married to two women simultaneously, maintaining two families at once, one in Mississippi and one with Lucinda in Texas. Yet Harold says, "Lucinda is believed to have married Joseph Sanford while still in Mississippi and shortly before 1850, the place and year in which John C. Jenkins was born. He is believed to be their first child." -- Harold K Christian, "Jenkins Family History," p 4, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf Harold appears to be trying here to account for the first wife story. If he was married before he married Lucinda, and the Oct 1826 birth date indicates he was married at age 19, it seems more likely that would have been the time of marriage to his first wife. If he did marry Lucinda at age 19, in 1845, then Nell would be Lucinda's daughter, not the daughter of a previous wife. If Joseph and Lucinda married in 1849, Joseph would have been about 23 at that time, and this could accommodate a previous wife before he married Lucinda (not two wives at once), who could be the mother of Nell and the other Mississippi daughter referred to in the family tradition. Texas, County Tax Rolls J S Jenkins, poll tax $1 1869 Poll Tax Roll Davis County We know Joseph bought land in 1869 in Cass County, and he was back there later, but no record has been found of his presence in 1870. The land transaction is recorded in 1869 (no date) in Texas Deeds, Bk S, p.#283, in which W B Jones et al transferred land to J S Jenkins. The 1873 and 1874 tax rolls report he owned a farm previously owned by original grantee T Wood. In later years, his sons J C and J A also are reported on land from Thomas Wood. Lucinda Amanda Taylor Jenkins died between 1868 and 1870. Jimmy Epperson's genealogy reports the date as 1867. But her son Joseph Asas tells ofhis memory of being at the funeral and being comforted by a neighbor at the burial. He was not born until June 1966. So he would not have remembred anything form 1867. Reports from siblings about their memory of this event in relation to other events indicate a date of 1868 or 1869. This family has not been found in any census in 1870. It is possible they were traveling at the time of the 1870 census. But they were in Cass County in 1868 and 1869. "Following Lucinda's death Joseph Sanford apparently left Cass County for a short time. His family was not enumerated in the 1870 Cass County, Texas, census. There is no indication that he terminated his residence there, however, he was listed on July 22, 1866, Cass County voter registration list. He purchased land in 1869. He was remarried to Mrs. Louisa Christian of Cass County February 28, 1972." -- Harold Christian, "Jenkins Family History," p 9, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf That leaves a small window of time in which they could have been actually out of the County. They did somehow miss the 1870 census. It may be that they traveled out of the area to Mississippi where they had kinfolks during this time. I have searched in Mississippi and even Georgia, where they lived at one time, but have found no trace nor any connection to other Jenkinses in any of the areas, nor Taylors that might match. Joseph and his family were back in Cass County at least by March 1872, when Joseph married his second wife (or third, according to unconfirmed stories of a wife in Mississippi before Lucinda), Louisa Christian on 7 March. While Harold Christian cited above reported that Joseph and Louisa married in February 1872, their marriage record reports the date of 7 March 1872. The information reported by family sources with the date in February 1872 is found in another database of Texas marriages. Only the transcribed record is available. No image of the original handwritten record has been found with the Ferbruary date. Texas, Select County Marriage Index, 1837-1965 Louisa Christian J S Jenkines Marriage 28 Feb 1872 Cass County, Texas, United States From the format of varioius state marriage databases, I conclude that the following record reporting the February date is reporting the date of the marriage license. This would match the marriage date reported in the actual recorded marriage record. The marriage record found in Texas records had the date of 7 March 1872. Texas Marriages, 1851-1900 J S Jenkins Mrs Louisa Christian Marriage 7 Mar 1872 Cass County, Texas In 1873, J S and his son J C were reported in the tax rolls. This record and the corresponding one for 1874 indicate that J S owns a farm originally owned by Thomas Wood. A John Jenkins is also reported on the same page, but his identity is unclear. This may be a brother of J S. No siblings or parents have been identified for J S. This John Jenkins appears again only in the 1875 tax record, listed next to J C, owning no land or personal property. This is one Elijah Jenkins. This may be a relative of Joseph Sanford Jenkins. J S's son John Cullen named one of his sons Ebby Elijah. On the same page of the tax rolls was a J A Jenkins, but this would be too early for J S's son Joseph Asa to be reported on tax rolls in his own name. J A was born in 1866, so would have been only about 13 in June 1879. There is a Daniel Jenkins of an age to be a brother or cousin of JS Jenkins. He married in 1855, so was probably married about 1835 to 1838. No clear origins have been determined for Daniel or other Jenkinses in the area. Harold Christian probed possibilities and investigated likely connections form the sources available to him. --------------------- A T. C. McJinkins and wife, ages 35 and 33 respectively, along with one male child, with a Duncan Post Office, is listed in the 1890 Census Roll of the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), (page 22, Pickens County). (This record is in the possession of the Oklahoma Historical Society, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.) Also listed as having a Duncan Post Office address was a (?). S(?). Jinkins, age 45 and alone. The above T. C. McJinkins could have been a nephew of Joseph Sanford. Sallie Christian said she remembered a Tom Jenkins, a doctor, who visited her father's home in Marlow, then Indian Territory (Oklahoma), ca 1897. Joseph Asa told her this Jenkins was his cousin. While there Dr. Jenkins removed a bone felon from the finger of her mother, Hester Ann (Smith) Jenkins. As a result of the operation, Hester Ann subsequently was unable to close that finger. This Dr. Jenkins could be related to one of the Cass County, Texas, doctors identified in the late 1800s land record entries of that county (Dr. H. L. D. Jenkins, and F. H. Jenkins, M.D.). -- The Jenkins Family History, by Harold Keith Christian, p 2, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf ---------------------- I found another record that relates to one of the names in Harold's information. OKGenWeb compiled cemetery records reports one burial record in the Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma, Cemetery that appears to be the ATC McJunkins in Harold's story. The name on the grave is transcribed as TG instead of TC, which may be the same person. McJunkin, T. G. -- Jun 15, 1856 - Oct 7, 1899; Duncan Municipal Cemetery, Block 05, may be T. C. rather than T. G. [This matches the A T C McJinkins Harold refers to in his history] -- Karla Sharp, OKGenWeb, http://stephenscogen.org/~okstephe/DuncanCemB05.html Family Tradition recalls that Joseph Sanford participated in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. In the 1970s Harold Keith Christian reported in the "Jenkins Family History." "Apparently Joseph's family remained in the Dalton area during the Civil War, because both Kate and Joseph Asa were born there. Family tradition indicates that Joseph served as a spy for the Confederate Forces during the Civil War. No information has been discovered to date indicating when, where and with what units he might have served." -- The Jenkins Family History, by Harold Keith Christian, p 8, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf In the 1880 Census of Cass County, Texas, the name is Joseph Jenkins. 1880 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 16 June, District 12, Precinct 3, Page 17, House and Family #144 Jenkins, Joseph W M 52 Farmer SC SC SC Jenkins, Louisa W F 42 Wife Keeps House Miss Miss Ireland Jenkins, Mary L W F 21 Daughter Farming Ga SC Miss Jenkins, Lucinda W F 19 Daughter Farming Ga SC Miss Jenkins, Margaret C W F 17 Daughter Farming Tx SC Miss Jenkins, Joe Asa W M 16 Son Farming Tx SC Miss Note that Lucinda is reported to be only 19 years old, but born in Georgia. But in the 1860 census, when the family was enumerated in Texas, "L Jinkins" was reported to be already 1 year old, born in Georgia. Thus in 1880, we would expect Lucinda to be age 21, not 19. Mary Lydie is similarly reported 2 years younger than we would expect, since she was already 3 in the 1860 census. A son Henry is known to family tradition and his burial site is on Mitchell Farm, near Dalton, Cass County, Texas. His birth date is known from family sources to be 1876, but he does not appear with this family in the 1880 census. Thus we know he died some time before June 1880. No death date appears on his crude gravestone on the Mitchell farm in Cass County. See notes at the end from Harold Christian. Family researcher Harold Christian reports the story from the perspective of Joseph Asa, indicating that JA moved to Indian Territory together with two of his brothers-in-law, one of whom was Joseph Sanford's stepson, Joseph Benjamin Christian. At this time Joseph Sanford was about 65, and Joseph Asa was about 25. Joseph Asa settled near Marlow, in what is now Stephens County, Oklahoma. Joseph Sanford died there on 26 May 1893 and is buried in the Marlow Cemetery. No word is mentioned about Louisa in the memories of this move, and the statement we have from Joseph Asa himself in 1952 make mention of his stepmother in reference to that move. They were still in Cass County in the actual year of 1890, with J S, J A and J C all appearing on the same page of the tax rolls in Cass County. Christian family memory seems to indicate that Louisa died about 1900, when J B Christian is reported to have returned to Cass County to sell the farm. "The Christians [sic] children ... Their mother, Louisa, married a second time, J. S. Jenkins, March 7, 1872, and had one son, Henry. After her death in 1900, Joseph Benjamin Christian sold the family farm to Lonzo Hicks. Family tradition states that there is a lineage connection to the Hensley family but this has not been proven." -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 22 August 1971, p 9 G But Louisa appears in a couple of tax rolls with J S and other Jenkins family members in the 1870s, but none in the late 1870s or later. She may have died before the move to Indian Territory. It may still be the case that the Christian farm was not sold until around 1900, but for other reasons. ---------------------- Joseph Sanford Jenkins Birth Oct 14, 1826 South Carolina Death May 26, 1893 Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma Joseph Sanford Jenkins' family origins are unknown. Censuses tell us he was born in South Carolina, where Jenkinses are extremely numerous. Other Jenkins families are found in the same period in counties around Cass County, but no connection has been found. They were in Texas before the Civil War, but no military record for Joseph has been found. Some vague memories in the family suggest he served the Union, perhaps as a spy or undercover worker. His first wife was Lucinda Amanda Taylor, born in Mississippi. They married in Mississippi in about 1845. No connection has been found for Lucinda to other Taylors in Mississippi or East Texas. Their first two children were born in Mississippi: Nell in about 1846, according to her reported age of 14 in 1860 John Cullen 4 Dec 1850 There was some suggestion in vague family memory that Nell was the daughter of another mother, and that there were other children in Mississippi. It was suggested that Joseph had been married before marrying Lucinda. But he would have been on 20 years old or less when he is thought to have married Lucinda in about 1845. Also their marriage was before it appears Nell was born. Another version suggests that he carried on a common-law marriage or concubinage marriage simultaneously with his marriage to Lucinda. In 1851 or 1852 they moved to Georgia for a few years, where three of the children were born, we think in the Atlanta area: William Sanford in 1853 Mary Lyde or Mary Lou 20 Jan 1857 Amanda Lucinda 31 May 1859 They moved to Cass County, Texas, before the 1860 census. Two children were born there: Margaret or Magurette Catherine 6 Jan 1862 Joseph Asa 28 June 1866. Lucinda died in about January 1869. Joseph and his family were not in the 1870 census, probably because Lucinda had died shortly before the census and they may have traveled back to Mississippi or Georgia for a visit. On 7 March 1872 Joseph married Louisa Christian, widowed in about 1870 when her husband Joseph Benjamin Christian died. In 1876 they had one son named Henry who died as an infant. He was buried on one of the farms, now the Mitchell farm. The Christians lived on an adjoining farm, and after they married Joseph Jenkins and Louisa Christian Jenkins maintained their two homesteads. It is uncertain when Louisa died, but it was probably before 1890, when Joseph joined his son Joseph Asa Jenkins in moving into Indian Territory. Other children stayed in Cass County or moved out to other parts of Texas. One of Louisa's sons, Joseph Benjamin Christian Jr, who had married Joseph Asa's wife's sister, had moved to Chickasaw Nation along with Joseph Asa's sister, Margaret Catherine and her husband Nelson Winter. These three couples moved together or Joseph Asa followed shortly after the first two had moved. They traveled north across the Red River into Choctaw Nation, then westward into Chickasaw Nation. Joseph Sanford died in or near Marlow in 1893 and is buried in the Marlow Cemetery. Joseph Asa and his family lived there for some time, and then in Ft Cobb and Mt View before moving to Chickasha after 1935. "Our mom, Eyline, was born in Mt. View, OK, or so I always heard. And Bud was born in Fort Cobb, OK. ... My granddad Lynch then moved to Carnegie, where mom grew up and Dad met her. All these little towns are/were near one another, and not far from Anadarko, where I was born (in 1937, by the way!) when Mike was born in Oklahoma City, where we lived for a time during WW2. LaRhonda was born in Chickasha, where, as you know, Dad had his long-term business and where we all went through school." -- Trent Jenkins, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 25 May 2009 In the record of her marriage to Oscar Marlow, LaRhonda is listed as LaRhonda E Wornom. The E would stand for her given middle name Eyline, her mother's name. This is interesting, since I understand her name was changed when she was adopted by Wayne Wornom to LaRhonda Jenkins Wornom.
