An earlier version of a family genealogy on the Cass County family reported that Ebby Jenkins and Lula Harraman had a daughter Lucile born in 1905. Many related family genealogies have picked this up and repeated it, all without any documentation or reference. I also referenced this source for this child, getting my first information on this branch of the Jenkins family from the Cass County genealogy, whose residents were unknown to our branch of the Jenkins lineage But I can find no basis or record for such a child, who has now been removed from the Cass County genealogy, but not from those who copied this error from that one and ours. Ebby and his second wife Harriett Charlton had a daughter named Lucille in 1917. This daughter was reported as Louella in the 1920 census and as Lucile in the 1930 census. Louella was reported as the first child of Ebby Elijah Jenkins and his second wife Harriet Charlton Tefteller. In the 1920 census she is listed as Louella Jenkins, and in 1930 as Lucile Jenkins. That seems to indicate that these were her two given names. I have not seen the name Louella in other records or family sources. I have put these names in the order Louella Lucile just for euphony. This seems the most likely sequence of names given the geographical and cultural context. I have not seen any single source with both these names. The family genealogy by Dottie Wommack has her name only as Lucille Jenkins. Did the 1920 enumerator just mistakenly write Louella for Lucille? 1920 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 20 June, Justice Precinct 3, Enumeration District 3, page 7B, Naples and Dalton Rd, Hse/Fam #124 Jenkins, Ebb Head Rents M W 34 TX TN GA Farming [b abt 1886] Jenkins, Harriet Wife F W 27 TX US TX [b abt 1893] Jenkins, Emma Fay Dau F W 12 TX TX TX [b abt 1908] Jenkins, Louella Dau F W 2 months TX TX TX [b abt Oct 1919] With the census date of 1 January, assuming the enumerator was following that, Louella's age at 2 months would put her death in about October 1919. But in 1930, the child Lucile who seems to match her otherwise is reported as 12 years old in April 1930. This would place her birth in 1918. 1930 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 9 April, Justice Precinct 3, District 14, page 4A, Naples Bryans Mill Rd, Hse/Fam #77 Jenkins, E E Head Rents M W 44 First married at age 21 TX GA GA Farmer [b abt 1886] -- page 4B -- Jenkins, Harret [sic] Wife F W 38 First married at age 21 TX TX AL [b abt 1892] Jenkins, Lucile Dau F W 12 TX TX TX [b Mar 1918] This individual is known as Lucile in the family. Lucile's marriage record reports her age as 18 in 1935, which would mean about 13 in 1930, which is a rough match for the census report of age 12 in 1930. This brings into questions the age reported in the 1920 census, supposedly by her parents. That could be an enumerator error. A birth date in October 1818 would better fit which would mean she was 1 year and 2 months, not just 2 months in January 1920. But her grave reports her birth date as 30 November 1917. So on 1 January 1920, she would have been 2 years and 1 month. (The census taker was actually at their house in June 1920. The enumerators often ignored the technical census date in reporting age.) The enumerator might have erred by putting 2 months when the parents said two years. I have not seen any information on why she would have been in Eldorado, Arkansas, at age 18, when her family was in Cass County, Texas (east Texas). I remember Aunt Mabel from my earliest years. We would visit her often, as she lived in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the same town as my grandparents. I note that in the 1910 census Mabel's mother is reported as born in Georgia in Julia's own listing, but in Mabel's record she is reported as born in Texas! I have found that the Texas birth place is right, though there was some confusion in the children's reports from census to census and in later memories reported to their children. In 1912 Mabel went to British Columbia with her mother and siblings. A Canadian Immigration record reports their entry at White Rock, British Columbia, on their way to join Mary's father Joseph Asa in Vancouver. The family went to Vancouver by train. This record says all the children were born in Texas, like Jennie, though from family and public records, we know all the children were born in Marlow, Oklahoma. This is also the spelling in notes taken by Lou Ila Jenkins, thought to be information from Jennie Jenkins, Mabel's mother. In 2013 I also found family photos with Mabel's name on the back written in her mother's handwriting I found that her name on her gravestone is spelled Mable. It is hard to tell why this error would have occurred. I never saw it spelled in family sources other than Mabel. I later found that this is the spelling of her name in the 1930 census. I have commonly seen the name spelled Mabel, though I have found that some people spell the name Mable, as on the gravestone. I found that on the Fairlawn Cemetery Registry, the name is spelled as Mabel, despite the error on the gravestone. Mabel and Oscar divorced soon afte the 1930 census. His daughter with his new wuife Frances is reproted as 8 years old in 1940. So they probably got married in 1931. In the 1940 census, Mabel is the Divorced head of the household with her two children Charles Kerwyn and Veva June. Note that the enumerator wrote Charles' name as Charles C, though his middle name was Kerwyn, as reported in the 1930 census. Veva June was enumerated earlier in her father's household, about 7 days before this enumeration of her mother's household. 1940 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 12 April, Chickasha Ward 1 Block 50, District 78-40, page 11B, 3034 NW 18th St, Hse #270, Rents $28 Hill, Mabel C Head F W 38 Divorced Grade H-4 b Oklahoma same house in 1935 Bacon Slicer, Wholesale Meats Hill, Charles C Son M W 18 Single Grade H-3 b Oklahoma same house in 1935 Hill, Veva J Dau F W 13 Single Grade 9 b Oklahoma same house Mabel's obituary, discovered online only in August 2016, refers to her by a nickname I never heard all my life from any of her family. --------------------- Mabel J (Muzz) Hill HILL Mabel J (Muzz), 88, passed away July 18, 1990 in Chickasha, Ok.
