I knew Ronnie growing up, and later my wife Edith and I visited him and his
family (wife Sue) in Durant, southern Oklahoma. on the northern edge of Lake
Texoma, in the Red River Valley. Ronnie was a pharmacist, and owned several
pharmacies in the southern Oklahoma.

He died as a result of a heart condition. Ronnie was born a "blue baby," with
leaking heart valves. He had several operations at different ages to address
this problem. I remember the major operation he had in his teens. I remember
before that time he had a bluish cast to his skin. He had a weak heart, but
had a fairly normal life.

Notes for Sallie Hester JENKINS

Sallie was born in Wapanucka , Chickasaw Nation, in what is now Johnston
County, Oklahoma. Wapanucka had been the location of a Confederate hospital
and prison, after the Chickasaw Nation joined the Confederate States of
America in the American Civil War.

"The Chickasaw government joined the Confederate States of America after the
outbreak of the Civil War. The Union army ordered its troops to evacuate Fort
Washita, Fort Cobb and Fort Arbuckle. When Confederate troops occupied the
area, they used the stone building at Wapanucka as a hospital and a prison."

The Federal Census (1900 Chickasaw Nation, and 1910 Stephens County, Oklahoma)
report Sallie's name under the spelling Sallie. Sallie's son Harold Keith
Christian also spells the name Sallie.

I found that the cemetery register for Rosehiill Cemetery in Chickasha, Grady
County, Oklahoma, has her name as Sallie G. I don't know where they got the G
or what it might stand for. The cemetery registry does not have her birth
date. They also give only the month of her death, not the day. Sallie died
on 26 August 1982. The cemetery registry says she was buried on 28 August.

Karen, who originally posted Sallie's memorial on Find a Grave, updated it
with missing information I provided from my research. She also added the full
notes for Sallie form this genealogy, which I have not repeated in the
memorial below.

Notes for Samuel M JENKINS

----------------
I have traced my family's origins to Shropshire, England to my ancestor John
Jenkins, 1656-1717, married to Martha Garner, 1656-1752. They settled in
Westmoreland County, Virginia. ...

They had two sons, Ezekiel Jenkins, 1695-1750, & William Jenkins, 1704-1747.
William Jenkins had one son, William Jenkins - 1740-1787, had 4 sons, one of
which was James Randolph Jenkins, 1760-1824, who was born in Fairfax County,
Va., & had 19 children, one of which was Samuel M. Jenkins, 1789-1872, who was
the father of my great grandfather, Owen Selvy Jenkins, who died of wounds
from the civil war at the age of 35. Samuel M. Jenkins was the first of this
set of Jenkinses to be born in Union County, South Carolina.
-- Joseph H Miller, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 5 July 2016
----------------

"Samuel Jenkins came from Union, South Carolina to Attala County with several
other families surnames, Burrell, Burden, Ables just to name a few. His
father and mother are from Fairfax County, Virginia. I went to Union, South
Carolina, but could not find any information that I didn't already know."
-- Billie Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 June 2014

Some genealogies report that Sam's father is from Virginia, but report his
mother born in South Carolina.

Attala County, Mississippi.

About 1849, Sam's wife Sara died. She is not in the 1850 census. The
youngest child is Richard, reported to be only 1 year old.

Samuel's age is reported as the same in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He is
reported as 66 years old both times. Neither of these is right, according to
his Bible record, reported to me by another researcher. The entry there says
he was born in 1791, making him about 59 in 1850 and about 69 in 1860. Sam's
wife Sara Catherine is missing here, and presumed dead before 1850. I have
not found a death record.

"According to his Bible record Samuel was born Nov 5, 1789, Sarah Catherine
was born 26 Feb 1791. Samuel died after 1870, his son John James Jenkins
bought his property and each heir is listed on the court document Dated
January 1873."
-- "rebelkit," Ancestry.com, comment on this genealogy online, 22 Feb 2014

In comments on a photo of Sam (attached to this profile), another descendant
reports his middle initial as M.

"This photo on metal plate was from my Grandfather's things. On the back it
reads 'S. M Jenkin,' or Jenkins, but the s on the end is not visible. S M
Jenkins was my Grandfather's Great-Great Grandfather."

In 1850 other Jenkins and Burell family members are living nearby. Next door
to Samuel and his children is John (Berry) Burrell, married to Sam's daughter
Polly (Mary Ann) Jenkins. Others enumerated on the same page are Isabella
Burrell and her husband John Jenkins. He is reported by one genealogy as John
James Jenkins, another son of Samuel.

With the dates of birth of the other known children of Samuel M Jenkins and
his wife Sara, John could have been born around 1825, as reported. But this
does match any child reported by other sources. Also on the same page are a
brother of John and Isabella Burrell, William (Riley) Burrell, who is married
to Sam Jenkins' daughter Anna (Anne) Jenkins.

The youngest girl, Sally, age 4 in 1850, has either gotten married early (age
14 or earlier) or died before this census. Nancy appears to be the second
wife of Samuel, since she has not appeared with the family before, and Samuel
had no wife in 1850. Elizabeth is a daughter of the first wife. A genealogy
reports the name of the first wife as Sara Catherine, with maiden name
unknown.

This genealogy reports no death date, and from other sources, her death date
is unknown. That genealogy reports all children as the children of Sara, but
has no second wife. Sara Catherine is reported born in 1790.

This would mean that when Richard (Dick) was born in 1849, Sara was about 59
years old. This is not very likely, though perhaps possible. This genealogy
also, lacking the 1850 and 1870 censuses, reports Nancy as a child of Samuel,
rather than his wife. But there is no child named Nancy in the 1850 census.

In the 1870 census, there are two females in the household with Sam, one is
Nancy, correctly reported as 10 years older than in 1860. Betsie (nickname
for Elizabeth) might be the daughter Elizabeth reported in 1860, but her
reported age in 1870 is 13 years greater than in 1860. I have not found any
further documentation to clarify Nancy's relationship to Samuel.

Sam married about 1865. Their first child, Mary Ann, was born about 1866,
according to the 1870 census. Nancy's age of 3 matches her date of birth
reported on Find a Grave or 24 May 1867. The memorial calls her Nancy Ann,
though Ann seems to be the middle name of Mary, reported in 1870 as Mary A.

Notes for Thomas Asa JENKINS

Thomas Asa was known to the family as Asa. My father (and maybe other
siblings) called him "Acy." This was also an early nickname for my
grandfather Joseph Asa. One family source records Joseph Asa's birth under
the name Joseph Acy Jenkins.

"Asa, the second child of this marriage was born on 3 November 1903 while the
family was living on the farm near Bradley. Following Asa's birth, Joseph
moved his family into Bradley. He purchased a mercantile store from a Mr.
Cater. During this period he sold groceries and drygoods and also served as
Bradley Postmaster."

Asa married Nova Bernice Grubbs. The 1930 census reports they had just
married that year. Asa and Nova met and married in Fort Cobb, Caddo County,
Oklahoma. By at least 1936, Asa and Nova moved to Anadarko, where they lived
the rest of their life.

In May 2007, on a visit to Oklahoma, the following information was given to me
by my cousin Asa Lee Jenkins, son of Thomas Asa Jenkins:
===============
In 1936 Asa went into business with his father-in-law James Grubbs in
Anadarko, Oklahoma. They were originally in the appliance business, but after
Mr. Grubbs died in 1941, Asa bought out Grubbs' share from his family. In
1956 Asa expanded by buying a furniture store in town, which he later merged
with the appliance business into one store. Asa was in business till he
retired in 1962, when he closed the business.

Asa's son Asa Lee decided in 1962 to open his own, separate furniture
business. He was in business with this store until he retired and sold it in
1983. After his retirement, his lawyer son, Larry Wade Jenkins, prevailed
upon him to go into title work for him.

The Social Security Death Index reports a quite different date of death from
that reported by Harold Christian from family sources. Harold reports 24
January 1966, while the SSDI says (month only) May 1969. There is also a
discrepancy in birth dates: Christian: 3 November 1903, SSDI: 11 March 1903.

Thomas Asa was buried in Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko, also referred to as
the Anadarko Cemetery. I have not been there to view the grave. But there is
a photo on the Find a Grave Memorial cited below, as well as for his wife Nova
Grubbs Jenkins. I found that for some reason, Asa and Nova are missing form
the registry of that cemetery on OKGen Web. The grave has the same death date
as the SSDI, but the birth date is the same as reported by Harold Christian.
(http://www.okcemeteries.net/caddo/mlane/jmlane.htm) An earlier registry that
was on RootsWeb had Asa listed but not Nova.

Updates I submitted ot Asa's memorial on Find a Grave were added in February
2015.

"I am confused about Lillie’s [Lillie Florence Jenkins] parents and hope
someday to figure it out. Can’t figure out why she seemed to have been
raised by her older sister unless that sister was her mother. ... As far as I
have been able to determine, the Jenkins and Harris families were all from the
area of Rutherford County NC. That is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. I found one will where a Jenkins (might have been a Harris) left a
son his still and wine press so I guess they were mountainmen moonshiners!"

Burial 4 Dec Stony Mtn [Mtn View?] Cemetery, Blacksburg, South Carolina
Certificate #020979

I find no cemetery in Blacksburg named Stony Mountain, nor any reference to
such a previous name. Could this be Mountain View Cemetery? No Thomas
Jenkins was found in Find a Grave memorials for Mountain View Cemetery.

A burial is found under the name of Drayton Jenkins in Little Memorial
Cemetery in Blacksburg. (See Find a Grave memorial below.) Other family
members are buried there as well.

Also, what appears to be his wife's death certificate reports she was buried
in Little Memorial. But the death date for that Drayton Jenkins is reported
as 31 December 1929, which is his wife's date of death!

Drayton's wife is reported in censuses as Rossly, Rosely and Rosly,
representing Rosalie. Her burial memorial on FAG has Rossie. On her death
certificate and gravestone, is reported on her death certificate as dying on
30 December 1929.. But her grave says 3 December 1929, the date on Drayton's
death certificate.

The grave markers for Drayton and his wife are footstones in the same style.
It appears they were both cut at the same time. Since they died in the same
month, this makes sense. But the stonecutters switched the dates of death for
the two on their gravestones!

A descendant and researcher reports that Drayton's cause of death was heart
attack, and also confirms our conclusion that the death dates were switched.

-----------------
"My grandmother Lillie Florence Jenkins is not mentioned ever living with
Drayton and Rosalie that I can find. She is in early census records living
with her sister Mala and her husband. You are correct on the death dates
being switched on Drayton and Rosalie. Drayton had a heart attack and was
found dead in some woods near his home.

They are buried at Little Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Gaffney, SC.
And are directly next to my grandparents. Joseph Graham Northey and Lillie
Florence Jenkins Northey. ... Drayton and Rosalie lived in Blacksburg at the
time of their deaths. ...

I never met either of my great-grandparents or my grandmother Lillie. She
died when my mom was 8. If you ever find anything about Rosalie, please let
me know. She is just a total mystery. (She was a Harris before she married
Drayton Jenkins.)

Notes for Virginia Jo JENKINS

Virginia Jo was killed in a shotgun accident in a family home. A loaded
shotgun was discovered by children when a big family gathering was underway at
a family home in Lone Wolf, Kiowa County, Oklahoma. The gun went off and
killed Virginia Jo. The story was related to me by my father, Orville Lee
Jenkins, Virgina Jo's older brother. This event was a key reference in our
family's gun safety awareness.

Nancy Charlton found Virginia Jo's obituary and posted a memorial on Find a
Grave. Jody is the only Jenkins buried in the Ft Cobb cemtery. Additional
information I submitted was added to the memorial.

Gun Discharge Is Fatal to Playmate

Grim tragedy stalked into the midst of a happy family reunion at Lone Wolf
Sunday and claimed little Virginia Jo, 5-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
J.A. Jenkins of Fort Cobb. The little girl was instantly killed by the
accidental discharge of a shotgun in the hands of a small playmate.

The accident occurred while most of the family were seated at the dinner
table, the children playing in an adjoining room having obtained the gun which
was thought to have been concealed in a closet.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Fort Cobb Monday afternoon
[30 June 1930] and interment made in the cemetery there. The Jenkins family
has lived in Fort Cobb for the past nine years where Mr. Jenkins is employed
as night watchman.
